Yes, tortoiseshell was originally made from the shell of a tortoise. Different areas of the shell give different patterns. It was then polished and made into decorative items. It is now made from plastic.
Since it was requested - how tortoise shell is made! Before 1970 and the turtles were critically endangered, the layers were separated out. If desired, after drying they could be layered again to get some strength, but not much as that would destroy the look. Now, it's of course as much shell as Andrea's nails. EDIT: In case you're wondering, it was the Hawksbill used most often.
Thanks for this show as I am in lock down as I have just had a big operation, so I am not aloud visitors for just in casw they are carrying anything into my home as my defences are low, so I have been checking for your vids every day as I love your work, you have taught me how to do my own nails even if they are not great I get compliments about them, so thank you as you have given me a hobby and I have saved myself a lot of money in the process. So you are simply the BEST thanks Jill xoxo
Tortoiseshell has been used for a long time for accessories, handbag handles, jewellery etc. When it's shaped and polished it becomes the tortoiseshell you are meaning and what ppl r used to seeing. It is also possible to see light through the treated shell, so it would have been nice to see this done on a clear nail like the NCE ones but with naio products.
Wow, that's such a cool effect. That small amount of metalwork is just stunning too, a very nice accent. I much prefer to use an e-file around my cuticle area. Even as a DIYer I do less damage to my cuticles when using an e-file vs using a hand file. My skin is like paper-thin, you really only have to look sharply at it to cut the cuticle area.
Hi love I live your work you are so talented I never seen a nail tech like you. I would love a video on what e file you use and lamp as well as brushes in different videos of course. I'm trying to get better at doing my own nails . I have been doing my nails 3 years now and I want to be better at it. Thank you and God bless you hun.
I love all the 💅💅💅videos you post on this channel. Watching you has really helped me to continue growing my 💅nail art💅 skills. Thank you so very much for everything you have shared please don't stop posting.💅💅💅videos you make it look so easy.🤗😊 Mel
These are super fire! My daughter said they look like cheetah roaches. A mix between a cheetah and a roach and it turned out to have a very beautiful baby… Baby cheetah roach. Gorgeous talented forever number #one fans!
Kirsty, "tortoise shell" glasses, barretts, combs, phone cases and whatever else you can buy in "tortoise shell" is just made of different colors of plastic chips melted together in a mould. They are made to look similar to actual tortoise shells that once protected the animal inside. But, turtles and tortoises are endangered now and their shells can't be sold, much like ivory. I have a barrette that was my grandmother's that is decoratively carved tortoise shell on one side and mirror pattern in ivory on the other. She was born and raised in San Francisco and she bought the barrette there with money from her first job in 1924. At one time the barrette had a delicate gold leaf floral design that ran across the entire length, but it's nearly all worn off now.
calichef1962 it sounds like you are describing the combs that came up in my google search for antique tortoise shell combs! I would love to attach a pic of what I found, but can’t work out how.
Hi luv can you pleease do a video on taking care of your brushes? How to release hardened gel or acrylic from them, storing them ,important shapes and sizes to have, best brushes, best cheap brushes, most expensive brushes, etc💜💜💜💜💅
Tortoiseshell is now made from plastic, that's why you can get CHEAP "tortoiseshell" glasses but originally it was made from actual (now endangered) hawksbill tortoise shells.
I would love to see a video of how you clean your brushes, files, etc. with all the coronavirus panic here in the USA I'd like tolearn how to properly clean those items.
If you were to paint them on instead of using gel polish and if you dont have blooming polish would it be same sort methos with black on brown on tan ?
@@amandapugtato8085 They don't. I looked it up when she s used it, but they have 3 items in drill bits and none of them is ceramic. I as well wanted good bit to work around cuticles.
If I had one wish it would be for me to have the chance to get my nails done by Kristen she is absolutely awesome. Peace and love to you and your family 🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋
How do you manage to never get acrylic on the brush when sculpting a nail ? ?? i do the same kirsty the bead isn't very wet or over dry but when i pat it , it gets stuck to the brush and i have to pat pat on the paper towel. x
Hahaha Kirsty cracks me up when she can't pronounce words. It always reminds me of how my mom forbade my dad from ever saying "Mitsubishi" because he couldn't pronounce it correctly and turned it into a not-so-nice word at the end 🤣🤣
Kristy I got a question for you. Several different times if polished my nails w/ Sally Hanson diamond polish and several hours later it smudges badly so I get frustrated and take it off. As far as I know it's not gel polish. It was purchased at Walmart for $5
Imogene Tavernia if I may offer to help. It may be old or possibly not drying between coats including top and base. Confirm that it is for sure air dry. Good luck 👍🏻
Tortoiseshell or tortoise shell is a material produced from the shells of the larger species of tortoise and turtle, mainly the hawksbill sea turtle, which is a Critically Endangered species according to the IUCN Red List largely because of its exploitation for this trade.
Hello ... I love your videos, and I follow you ... I would like to ask you to put a translation in Portuguese ... I am Brazilian and I will be very happy to understand everything you say. Thank you🥰🥰🥰
I used to have some Tortoise shell hair combs. They became brittle and broke after a few years. I was too young to take care of them. Now they are made of plastic.
Tortoiseshell products are made from the sea turtle hawksbill in Japan it’s call bekko. As is is illegal to buy and sell anything made from Tortoiseshell as the hawksbill is critically endangered it’s still found in few places. Most tortoiseshell items sold are made form plastics. Please do not buy real tortoiseshell items there are way to tell the difference although it can be difficult to tell.
ALL the colors should have been more jelly like. Clear with pigment ... several dif colors and steps, layering. . Way to much yellow/orange. And the dark colors should be looser looking.

I have an aquatic turtle and I save the pieces of her shell from when she sheds. A friend of mine is using them to make a guitar
It’s actually the shell of a marine turtle, not land tortoise.
I’ve seen a few tutorials on how to do this particular pattern and you’ve made it look far more simple. Yay 😀 for a newbie, that’s a blessing haha

Totally agree with you on tortoise shell patterns. Tortoises patterns are very close together and have a very sqaurish shape. 🐢
OMG! The Blooming Gel is awesome! The tortoiseshell is gorgeous, Kirsty! 💖

Old Fashionedista I agree. Suzie’s tortoise shell was perfection
I love how you make everything look so easy when it really isn't...thankyou for sharing Kirsty and Adam 💜💅💜
agree looks easy, not easy at all!!!
Mimosa is a nice drink for brunch... orange juice and champagne.. delish :o)
I love that french nail! So pretty!
Yes but was it a reverse French in acrylic then tortoise shell pattern or she painted on The French part then the tortoise design?anyone?
I love the technique in which u applied the acrylic
I am loving 🥰 this design. You do make it look easy. Beautiful nails thank you for sharing with us.
I 'm obsessed with this design! Fantastic job!!!!
I deeply love your work, watching you form Mauritius
Very pretty, Kirsty. Stay healthy! 🐢🧡

Love your make-up!
Gonna like it even before I see it 😄

Kirsty, could I have a question?
What type of E-file have u got?
I'm about to change mine, just enquiry around.😍
Great new set😘
I love it !!! Also I love the nail forms !
Wünder schön 😍👍
Tortoiseshell is now made from plastic, that's why you can get CHEAP "tortoiseshell" glasses but originally it was made from actual (now endangered) hawksbill tortoise shells.
I love this design! Do you think I could still do it on short/natural nails?
Think more spots would be very tortoise like but what do I know lamo but good job gonna purchase your blooming gel
Super nice design 😍
I would love to see a video of how you clean your brushes, files, etc. with all the coronavirus panic here in the USA I'd like tolearn how to properly clean those items.
She did one a couple of days ago - super useful! 🙂
th-cam.com/video/3WYpZ1GwHBU/w-d-xo.html
I believe she has a video from last year on how she cleans her brushes
Actually LOVE these x
found you on Facebook and im obsessed
💕 this style of 💅. Stay well all 😻 Sue Ellen from WV 😻
If you were to paint them on instead of using gel polish and if you dont have blooming polish would it be same sort methos with black on brown on tan ?
I love listening to Kirsty try to pronounce things 😂
I have been waiting patiently and hoping you would do this design!!
Very Pretty 🥰🥰🥰
Kirsty you need to invent a pinching tool for the end/length of the nail!! 😃
I love watching your videos you always make me laugh
I love that white bit for your e-file. Where do you get it? Also, you look fabu darling!
MelodySusie has a couple nice sets of these bits. I think the Naio Nails website has them, too. They'd be the ceramic bits
@@amandapugtato8085 They don't. I looked it up when she s used it, but they have 3 items in drill bits and none of them is ceramic. I as well wanted good bit to work around cuticles.
Love them, the are exquisite.
If I have grown out my natural nail and I have a gel overlay, is it safe to pinch? Or should I cut my natural length down and apply tips and pinch?
If I had one wish it would be for me to have the chance to get my nails done by Kristen she is absolutely awesome. Peace and love to you and your family 🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋
Joanna Helmer I totally agree!!
So, which nails are considered best for placing gems/bling and them staying put?
Lovely 😍 x

Now I just need all the colors 😂
Lol I think this is the first time I have seen you use gloves kirsty I understand why but so funny to see so used to looking at your nails
The thing that killed me is that she wore gloves to be cautious, but then she kissed the gloves at the end 😅
Tortoise shell "things that make you go humm?"😕😜
Not a big fan of this pattern but the shape of the nails is gorgeous.
Hahaha Kirsty cracks me up when she can't pronounce words. It always reminds me of how my mom forbade my dad from ever saying "Mitsubishi" because he couldn't pronounce it correctly and turned it into a not-so-nice word at the end 🤣🤣

Awesome 😍
Where can I purchase your Neio Nails Acrylic powder and do You ship to Canada ?
Gorgeous good morning
Adams OCD kicked in.....nail polish gap on third shelf was filled 😆
Not gonna lie, totally thought they were gonna do a tortie CAT design lol but that would have had a white base. Still think this is beautiful!
tortoise shells are more of a geometric dome, the colors are good it's just the nail shape that makes it look more leopard than tortoise.
Hehe first comment yay ❤️❤️
I've just had to trim my long nataral nails due to a break I now know the feeling of everyone having longer nails than myself
Why didn't you just go to a shop and get an overlay for the broken one?

2:45 - 2:49 - WHAT DID SHE SAY?!?!?! i can usually understand most things.. but this was another level
urlyktl she was saying something about Naio wanting her to use other colors but she just loves natural beige. Some was a still a bit muffled lol 😂
My name is Bond - Ultra Bond... LOL :)
Hawksbill turtles Is where it originated from
I want to know why the pattern is in Amber, brown and black all the time. Tortoise shells are greens, greys and blues.
💜
I used to have some Tortoise shell hair combs. They became brittle and broke after a few years. I was too young to take care of them. Now they are made of plastic.
