Buffing and Waxing Boat Gelcoat to Remove Oxidation [Pro Tips]

  • Getting oxidation of of boat gelcoat and returning it to like new gloss is a three step process. First, we need to buff the boat with a wool pad and compound to remove oxidation. Second, once the oxidation is gone we need to polish the boat with a synthetic pad and a polish to get the boat as glossy as possible. Finally, it is time to wax. Waxing is important to protect the boat. However, it is the least important of these three steps! Focus on doing a great job of compounding and polishing and you will get great results! If you have any questions after watching the video just leave them below in the comments and Ill get back to you. Brian
    Products I recommend using:
    Presta Super Cut Compound
    Presta Chroma 1500 polish
    Presta White Wool Pad
    Presta Green Synthetic Wool Pad
    Farleca or Colonite Wax
    Makita 9237 Buffer

Thanks for your clear & concise presentation. After watching I purchased some Presta Supercut compound, Presta Ultra cutting creme (couldn’t find the chroma you used) & Collinite 476 super coat wax. I’m using it on a fiber glass Freightliner truck cab that is/was chalky. I couldn’t be happier with the results. I previously tried to use my car polishing equipment and wasn’t getting the finish I wanted. I looked on TH-cam and found you. (I would never have used anything this aggressive - but glad I took your advice). Thanks again.

Hi Brian - I followed your instructions pretty much to the letter and got great results. Had some oxidation starting on the hull of my 23-ft navy blue Sea Hunt. Your three step process worked wonders. Threatening to shave in the morning in the shimmer of the finished glossy hull. End step I used Collinite wax which produced excellent results. Only thing that I did different was drizzle a wee bit of Baby Oil on the pad for the polishing step [advice from a friend]. Thanks again. Joe

Thank you for the video my boat was badly oxided being a black and Red Hull from the 80s. The only thing I did different was wet sand. I couldn’t get a nice shine while compounding so wet sanded before following your steps. Now it’s beautiful and the presta pads are reasonably priced but quality.

Sportfishing Boats this question is for my bathtub, I have a well and high iron levels so the tub was stained, I got the stains out, I guess I over scoured it, it doesn’t shine anymore, I was wondering if I could do the first two steps to get the shine back and forget the wax because of bathing? Any thoughts?

    • @SportfishingBoats
      @SportfishingBoats  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Farleca and Mequiars👍. Unfortunately, 3M heavy cut isn’t that aggressive. If you have some heavy oxidation that’s not going to be fun. Plus that product is a pain in the arse to wipe off the surface when your done. 3M compound is a good product on paint for sure. On gelcoat not so much😕

Based on my reading I learned I did not use the bast wax they make for boats. Given where I am in the process what are your recommendations in terms of products ( pads and waxes etc) and process

I was running low on time and wasn’t able to remove all of the oxidation. Question is, will it hurt my gel coat to use the presta compound a second time, followed by presta polish and wax? Just want to make sure I won’t damage my gel coat. Appreciate the help.

Great Video! I liked and subscribed. Two quick questions about the process:
    1) I assume I should clean the boat before cutting....is there a good effective way to do this in a Winter storage building without access to water from a hose?
    2) In the past when I have attempted all this, there seems to be a chalky residue on the gelcoat after cutting.....should this be cleaned off before polishing? Again, any recommendations on how to do this, again without access to water?

I've only bone the first step on buffing them, so I've pretty new to buffing. And I've only used 3M foam pads. And I love them for polishing the dimond plate, which makes it so much easier.

Hi, watching this from Australia. After watching your video's I bought Presta wool pads...white, yellow & blue. My boat is heavily oxidized. When do I use the yellow wool pad?

Hello from Ocean Isle Beach, NC! I have a 2018 Robalo Cayman with a gray hull that is starting to get a few spots of oxidation, particularly on the transom. Most of the hull is still shining but I want to stay on top of it. I was wondering if the Presta Super Cut is too aggressive for my application at this point. Is there something less aggressive that I should try first? Or is it better to just do it the way you suggest even though my hull isn't that bad?

Two questions. 1. Do you wash and dry the boat after compounding? Same after polishing. 2. Any temperature restrictions for the compounding and polishing?
    Thanks Greg. McDonough Ga

Do you know anyone in Myrtle Beach you would recommend. Great video I might get everything you suggested and go for it.

Hi Brian I have a 2014 Ranger that’s Raspberry with platinum and on the corners back by the transom the gel coat seems to have spider cracks in it. I had a detailed look at it and he said he’d be afraid of using a cutting compound on it thinking it might actually start turning it silver ? I’d like to get something done to it before it gets worse. Thanks for the videos 👍

Question: having issue trying to find the right pad. Step 1 pad: found black and white whole compounding pad. Step 2 pad: green blended wool light cutting and heavy polishing. Step 3 pad: can find the right one foe the actual buffing of the wax. Help please

Hi Brian, watching from New Orleans, and your videos are very helpful. I've got a 97 Grady white 272 Sailfish that topsides has no gloss to it, the hull sides has some gloss when viewed at an angle. I'm sure that compounding, polish, & a good protectant is well overdue. My question for you is, at what point would you recommend a wet sand be required. I'm pretty sure that the sides could go either way, but not so sure about from the rub rail up. Any help is appreciated
    Thanks Vincent

Vincent, sorry for slow response. The only way to know for sure if you need to wet sand is to compound a test spot and see what happens. Sometimes you’ll be surprised what will come out.

Watching from Glenside, Pennsylvania. I want to follow your instructional video step by step. Process and video use 3 different pads however, I only see 2 are listed in the product list. Looks like the green for polish and white for wax. Is that correct and what about compounding pad?
I am would be happy to click on Amazon affiliate links to buy these products so you could get commissions from your advertising but I do not see any links.

What should be done before cutting compound where vinyl trim lines have been removed and left a shadow of gelcoat that isn't oxidized? Thanks!

Hey Brian!! Thank you for your videos, I really do appreciate you taking the time t make them. I’m Centennial, CO and my question for you is how to polish the spots that the boat sits on the trailer? Thanks again! Matt

Your Welcome Matthew! Simple answer-don’t worry about them. You, I, and the fish will be the only ones that know. Jacking up boats and working underneath them is just too dangerous to be worth it in my opinion. Brian

I have a 1972 Terry bass boat I got from my grandpa 20 years ago. How do you get into the smaller spots on a boat to when you are restoring it? I got everything but the buffer you have unfortunately I bought a cheaper one. But I have some smaller areas around the water well at the transom and along the top that is only 6 inches wide with a few troughs.

Hello from the Puget Sound in Washington. We recently had a fire outside our home that damaged our sailboat. One of the things my husband is trying to do now is restore the aluminum mast to the regular "color." It suffered high heat and smoke damage. Looking for a no-fail product to clean up the aluminum. Thanks for any help you can offer. (Also, thank you for the buffing and gel coat info on this video and the other one. We hope to be able to use that info too!)

I purchased a Rupes polisher, Diamond Cut cmpd, and STS 3000 Polymer sealant. Wouldn't I need to use some sort of "polisher" in between?
