Hughsnet utilizes geosynchronous satellites. They are in orbit 22,000 miles away overhead. Even if the bulk data rate for download is faster, the latency rate is higher. That matters for some programs.

Anyone who had HughesNet knows, for a fact, that it stinks. I would not be able to watch this video without buffering. HughesNet only has 2 satellites. That means 50% of their customers are sharing the same bandwidth. Also, their two satellites are in geosynchronis orbit which increases their latency. Starlink is in LEO and it makes a difference. By the way... there isn't a great big difference in price.

I sold, installed and serviced HugheNet, ViaSat and Sky Caster's for 15 years and can tell you that SpaceX is far superior to any of these. Latency is the most important parameter when it comes to broadband. Another thing to remember is that the three systems that I sold are not able to be self-installed because they require delicate transmitter adjustments that if done incorrectly can interfere with other's services.

Unless Hughesnet forsakes all geosynchronous satellites in favor of LEO satellites, they will never fix latency. The latency is a direct result of physics/distance travelled. A LEO satellite may have to go between 300-500 miles per hop. A geosync satellite is forced to be at an altitude of 22,236 miles. Since the speed of light is 186,000 miles per second, a single hop up and back to the satellite will be 22,236x2= 44,472 miles. If you do the quick math, that amounts to 44,472/186,000 = .239 seconds or 239 milliseconds. In order to complete a VOIP phone call, the max latency you can have before you get echo is between 180-200 milliseconds. Clearly, you cannot do VOIP over HughesNet. This also applies to other latency dependent apps, such as gaming, live streaming, TEAMs, etc.

Right you are. I work from home as a data tech dev, and communication has never been better now I am StarLinked. Hughes is complete garbage! I even had to pay them to get rid of the hardware, even though I am still stuck with their cumbersome dish. The tech behind Flatface is laudable and easier to dispose of, although I doubt that will be the case. Marketplace disruption at its best. Way to go boring Starlink and Spacex!

I have StarLink in a rural area on the east coast of North Carolina. I am currently getting between 35 and 60 ping, 150-300 mbs down and 15 to 20 up. Way better than I ever expected and totally happy with it. FYI, I am using my own orbi mesh wifi router.

Your 3 points are spot on , I was a Hughesnet user for ugh....20 yrs out here in the hinterlands , but as soon as SpaceX got the dish to me I was out. Now about the forth point you may not know about , in those twenty years I learned the ugly truth about tech support. It consists of " Community Forums " that consist of Hughesnet employees posing as moderators. (or cheerleaders if you will) When it came time to pull the plug , I called them out on that non-sense to everyone in that forum with problems being blamed on "user error" that was a fun time , they broke legs as they scrambled to remove me from the site. SpaceX has delivered everything they promised and more.I can game, stream and download with trying to keep track how much data I have.

I had Hughesnet back in the early 2000s when I first moved to this rural area. The service was terrible. The data caps made the service virtually unusable. They had the entire market to themselves and they did nothing. So now, they find themselves having to respond to SpaceX. I would never trust them.

    • @tactileslut
      @tactileslut 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

I had them (resold through Dish) until a few years ago. The latency kept one of my work sites from loading at all. The data cap kicked in halfway through the first week and while TH-cam would play at 144p through a clear sky nothing else with video worked. Add their duration and penalty terms and the company gets unattractive even with a Lost in Space upgrade.

We had viastat and 2 other cellular hot spots for about 3 years as my wife works from home with no other options. We where on the waiting list for starlink for almost 2 years. Viastat was terrible. We got starlink about 4 months ago and what a game changer. So far all my wife's zoom or Google meetings have gone flawless. So for us it wouldn't matter what kind of smoke the hughs net or Viastat are blowing we are not interested. Thanks for the hard work

You said it all JC. I went thru the whole viasat/dish thing once I moved way out of the city. Data caps and latency were brutal. Without fail we would run out of data by the 24th of every month and suffer slow/ no speeds until the 1st. I didn't even bother online gaming... Anyways most fun day in my Internet life was installing SL and calling viasat and dish TV and telling them to stop service!.
Now I'm almost 2years into SL. Just upgraded tvs to 4k.(slow to upgrade tech I know). Did 2 nights binging TV shows and usage went up to 50 gigs each day! Ida never survived a 200Gb cap.

We live in a rural area and we were on HughesNet for about 15 years because we had no other options. We went to Starlink as soon as it was available. The difference is huge. We no longer have to deal with latency issues or throttling issues. And the billing is so much cleaner with Starlink. With HughesNet we got a several line bill of bits and pieces that made up the total. With Starlink it's one easy to understand flat amount. Nice. We are so happy with Starlink. I had to learn it was OK to to watch a TH-cam and not worry about winding up in queue hell.

I had hughsnet for a 2 year contract i would not let prisoners use this internet. Every time it rained hard the unit fried and it would take 2-3 weeks to get a repair person out to replace the electronics package in it. I finally had to add at an extra cost the serviced plan because they where replacing it 5-6 times a year. A light rain no service a bird crosses its path no service. I was getting 6-10 seconds of lag time. It would take one week to reach the data cap and then I was switched to the horrid slow speeds for the remaining month. Hughesnet is a nightmare and they had me under a 2 year contract. Please Please Please Pleas do not fall for Hughesnets "faster speed, cheaper cost" I have had starlink for a year now and im loving it.

My Starlink now gets unbelievable speeds in storms. The other day it was raining about an inch an hour for two hours. I only lost service for about five minutes three times. DIRECTV would’ve been out of service for about four hours during those two hours. No way that a satellite in geosynchronous orbit can punch through a storm like that.

JCristina, you are so correct. I couldn't wait to leave VIASAT; terrible service, high latency, unlimited data ($250/month) until you hit the cap. I now have two Starlinks (2 yrs), mobile(RV) and stationary. Pay less for unlimited data, low latency and none of the bad service.

I think a lot of HughesNet users already left because of Starlink. I was a HughesNet user for two years and I couldn't care less what new technology they have. This is their last attempt to get some customers back. I feel they have screwed over user's long enough. Nothing compares to Starlink for rural Internet.

HuesNet prior to me getting Starlink, they were offering 5 Mbps down 10 top for 50 Gig then throttled. I considered 20 Mbps a throttle speed. Plus with record of horrible Customer service, I waited for Starlink. Very pleased and not going anywhere.

I had Hughesnet and Viasat because that is all that was available. When Starlink was available I switched and have never looked back. My last Viasat bill was $108 for a service that rebooted itself 5 or 6 times a day in rural East Texas. My last bill with Starlink, $120.00. For a $12.00 difference it is a no brainer. Very little latency, easy setup and no bandwith restrictions.

My ViaSat bill was $170 and 150gb cap. StarLink is $120 and 1 terabyte cap. I have never come close to the StarLink cap, but regularly hit the ViaSat cap. And when i switched to StarLink, ViaSat had me send back their modem that I had paid $10 a month for for 9 years or pay them another $300. I sent it back. They then tried to tell me they never received it. I gave them the tracking number. That surprised them. I think too many people didn't keep track and they were able to get another $300 from everyone.

After 20 years with Hughes I couldn’t have been more happy to cancel it after I received my Starlink hardware. I’ve gone from about 5 to 10 MPS to 40 to 80. It’s free for me bc my CELL FINALLY WORKS at home so I m stopped paying AT&T for a landline! ($120 monthly). I owned my Hughes equipment and was not in a contract, yet the Hughesnet rep (always in Philippines) tried to get me to pay $400 for violation of contract! I called out BS on that real quick! I was on the secondary wait list with SL for a couple weeks then was notified I was moved to regular customer / full speed. I highly recommend you go with Starlink!

Buyer beware with HughesNet! In my experience, throughput was abysmal, not even close to 'high-speed broadband' as they advertised. And yet, they throttled my speed when I overran the ridiculously low data cap. WTH! Performance was already almost unusable, so slowing my connection down made it totally useless. Even with shiny new H/W, their corporate culture is suspect. Although not perfect, SpaceX Starlink is the first service to come through for us in rural AZ. It'll take a lot more than fluff advertising to get me to switch.

I was on Hughesnet as it was my only option here in rural Hootervile. After a 14 month wait my Starlink arrived, but I ran Hughesnet for a few months afterwards. The old Hughesnet versus Starlink is a no-brainer but the new Hughesnet bird's 600ms latency is likewise a big NO. Also, in mind, one big satellite = potential single-point failure. I'm sticking with Starlink.

Case in point - solar flare or whatever 4? months ago and SL had to deorbit 60 sats. And the point was -- did anyone notice? OH right - they weren't online yet, just came out of the launch capsule, etc. Basically a non-event.
My little slice - we have co-ax. They are installing fiber (private Village - company isn't on the specturm) 60%+ of the local residents have SL. (We've had SL since Feb '22. I can have the "honor" of going from SL's speeds to 10 (Yes 10) mps for $80 per month - I'll have it wired in and then cancel

Wow! Learning so much from your vidios! I have NEVER commented before! I used to be a HughesNet customer, but am now with Viasat with no contract. Lousy service, always running out of Data (silver plan) and throttled incessantly. I've been watching/learning about starlink and you are soooooo brilliant! I'm not well versed on all this but you put it in laymen's terms that I can comprehend. (at least most of it! Hughes net is a terrible company. When I moved to a rural location in NC , they told me I had no other choice but to use them. I told them I did have a choice, and that was to wait for starlink. I would never switch to Hughes net. Starlink did actually cap us for a few months and then took off the cap last year. Love the videos, dude. Thanks for what you do.

In Short I’ve had both of these service packages over the past few decades. I’ve paid there ridiculous price for their meager service only to be offered a cheaper rate after switching to the far superior Starlink. I’m extremely happy with Starlink. We won’t be going back.

Spot on my friend. My Viasat contract of two years just expired. Boy did they scramble with better offers when I cancelled. My Starlink will be active within the next couple weeks. These traditional satellite companies simply can’t compete on a technological level. Even if Viasat would have offered to cut my monthly bill in half and remove the data cap entirely, I would still have switched over to Starlink for several reasons.

With my time with Hugh’s net I can tell you when they say they throttle they mean they wipe out, I wasn’t getting 1mpbs download speed and we had the best plan they could offer. Sadly I then went to Viasat and signed a year contract thinking bigger numbers meant better speeds, my speed on average then was 0.25 mbps, and now I gotta pay 100$ to break the contract early, and plus the hardware fee for starlink is super high, so really it’s at the point where we gotta wait out for about another few months before we make any big money decisions, this year has been a roller coaster for us

Living in a remote area with limited options, my dad used to pay a whopping $300 a month for HughesNet with a measly 20GB data cap and bundled (unnecessary) satellite TV. The internet was unusable after throttling, and forget streaming! Thankfully, Starlink has been a game-changer. We can finally ditch the unreliable local phone company and HughesNet's cloud-cover woes. Starlink keeps us connected even during storms - a huge win!

As long as Hughesnet keeps that data cap, it's a no-brainer choice. I had almost 2 weeks that I could watch TH-cam and NetFlix. Then 2 or more weeks where I could only check email or my Facebook. It's less money than Starlink, but you only get to use it 1/2 as much.

Had Hughes Net for years. They have long said that once you reach the data cap they will not throttle you. They said they would just deprioritize you. To them, "Deprioritize" means immediate throttling down to dial-up speeds. They want you pissed off about the throttling so that you buy extra data. Full hard throttling does not end until you buy extra data. It must be part of thier business model. 100Mbs? Unless they have changed thier ways, what they really mean is "Speeds Up to 100Mbs". Translation...You will never see 100Mbps and will be lucky to see half of that. If you complain, they will tell you the problem is on your end, not theirs. Latency? Its never going to be as good as what is possible with a LEO satellite mesh. Hughes Net might lure some people away from Starlink but my prediction is that they will all run back to Starlink.

Just dropped VIASAT after adding Starlink. VIASAT was $77 a month and Starlink is $120. The issue with VIASAT was the data cap. After hitting the data cap, I was slowed down so much that you couldn't watch a movie without an extreme amount of buffering. Enough frequent buffering that it wasn't enjoyable watching TV. I've had Starlink for two months and (knock on wood) I haven't had one episode of buffering. Yes, I'm paying $43 more a month, but it's well worth not having a data cap and not seeing any buffering.

I think the people at HughesNet have wildly underestimated Starlink's internet service. I live in a very rural foothill area of Southern California, and my Starlink speeds "average" 200+Mbps (download) and 18Mbps (upload) with a latency between 19-35ms. I have recorded Starlink speeds as high as 315Mbps (down) and 30Mbps (up), during peak and nonpeak hours. I have also noticed Starlink speeds increasing slightly nearly every month.🤠 Tell us another story, HughesNet... 🤪

Thank you for this video. It was my first time watching one of your presentations. You had me waiting and waiting for you to get to latency. I am surprised that you left that for number three as it is very important much of the time. I am an electrical engineer and worked for about ten years in the satellite communication field. The company I worked with used only geostationary satellites so there was plenty of latency. This was particularly problematic for any application that was interactive in nature. Yes, we could stream data at a very high bandwidth, but this was only truly useful when it wasn’t interactive. Ever notice a TV interview conducted over a satellite link with a high latency network. It is exasperating to watch as the delays seem so unnatural. The data caps and slow upload speeds of the Hughes service are also problematic, but it will not be visible to all users. Low volume users may not notice that part, but they will notice the latency if they attempt to do anything that is interactive.

Great video!! I live less than 1/2 a mile from the city limits here in NM and considered as being in a "rural" area. Because of that, none of the big name internet providers are available (cable, fiber, etc.) and the only one is CenturyLink DSL at a maximum of 20mpbs download speed, which I'm lucky if I ever get 10mbps download speed. I tried Viasat satellite internet late last year and it was HORRIBLE. My connection with CenturyLink was faster than Viasat plus Viasat kept disconnecting. Good thing I never got rid of CenturyLink during this time. I bit the bullet and got out of my contract with Viasat and paid the penalty!! I am now debating about getting HughesNet but need some help in deciding if SpaceX Starlink is better although I would have to pay quite a bit for the equipment. Latency was something I was not aware of and had no idea what it was until I viewed your video. THANK YOU FOR THAT! So, my question is, Is SpaceX Starling definitely for me?? Thank you!

Yeah HughsNet and Viasat suck. I have used all of them from Hughes' DirecPC in the late 90's which was satellite download with DialUp upload to Starlink. Starlink is so much better, the only problem I have with Starlink is rain fade and I don't think I can do any thing about that except move to the desert. All the geosynchronous satellite companies can do is sue SpaceX and try and take their bandwidth. That's probably why the FCC took the money away from SpaceX, they knew it would speed up the bankruptcy of Hughes, et al. I think the only thing keeping them afloat is the military and government. It must really piss Hughes off having to pay SpaceX to launch their satellites knowing they can't compete with Starlink's network.

The only advantage I can think of is that Jupiter-3 is geostationary, so where you don't have a clear view of the sky, you may be able to get lucky and find a spot that has visibility to that one satellite. With any LEO constellation, this is not an option. In reality, this is very much a corner case. And over time, Starlink will require less and less visible sky to operate.

Because we are not in a contract, we are paying $120 for the 25gbps and allowed 40gb monthly. I called them to ask about the elite plan and told them I have to speak with my husband before anything.
