This came out in 1979 during height of Disco Movement. By 1980 there was a huge Disco hatred & backlash. This song managed to squeeze through & roll into very early 1980.
@@janath9118 After Saturday Night Fever movie/soundtrack success in '77, tons of Disco songs were coming out and dominating radio markets. Rockers, Punkers, etc hated the over-saturation. A Disco sucks movement & overall hatred developed. It peaked in summer '79. By early 1980, Disco went way under the radar. It became a bad word. Radio stations started to play much less, producers weren't making much anymore, discos were closing or changing over to New Wave or some other type business. Also late 1979 is when Studio 54 got busted for drugs & tax evasion. They shut it down in late '79. That club helped fuel the whole industry. So Disco went down with it, lol. A few "Disco" type songs made it through into 1980. Generic dance music slowly came into style by the mid-80s, using similar synths & drum machines as Disco used.
@@mowerdan8133 Sorry about the delay to respond. I read and noted everything that you mentioned about the big backlash of disco music which occurred at late 70's. 1980 was one of hottest years on record in Texas & other states. We had 100 days of 100+ degree heat with high of 113. I was living in a ghetto apt in Oak Cliff where the entire complex had no a/c. The complex was directly behind a Burger King. That created even more heat. Somehow we survived. I was 10. K104 blasted the song, other songs from Gap Band / Burn Rubber & Kool & the Gang. @amberwaite2009 funkytown is a 2 minute and 50 second video of a Mexican cartel torture. The video starts off with a man who is still alive after having his face peeled off and hands cut off in a bloody mess on a white tiled floor. Brings back memories. I recall sitting there on a Sunday listening to the charts with a finger on the record button of the stereo to tape my favourite songs when they came on... I would also go out with a walkman style personal tape player (I couldn't afford a genuine walkman lol) and always carrying a pencil to 'rewind' the tapes to save on batteries 😊
Happy days indeed!

This came out in 1979 during height of Disco Movement. By 1980 there was a huge Disco hatred & backlash. This song managed to squeeze through & roll into very early 1980.
mowerdan8133 Can you please tell how this Disco hatred and backlash happened?
I know that music always keep changing the styles but I was not aware of all these facts you mentioned herein, because I am a man living in South Asia and all the detailed news about music do not arrive here in those days. I like Pop, rock, jazz, reggae, instrumentals etc. but I wish that disco music lasted longer than this. That was the time when I was very young and energetic. Thank you very much for your very good explanation! I appreciate it.
@@janath9118 You're welcome. Any other insights, let me know. I lived & partied through those years in New Jersey, so I was right in the middle of all those trends.
@@mowerdan8133 I noted your message and it's very nice to hear from you. You have a very good knowledge of 70's, 80's music. Definitely, I will let you know of other insights when I come across. Thank you for replying me!
It's amazing what music can help you get through some shitty situations.
Thank you for this blast from the past. 🙏

@amberwaite2009 funkytown is a 2 minute and 50 second video of a Mexican cartel torture. The video starts off with a man who is still alive after having his face peeled off and hands cut off in a bloody mess on a white tiled floor. While the cartel is savagely torturing him you can hear music playing in the background like sweet child o mine, beat it, and funkytown. I recommend do not watch it if you are sensitive to gore as it is a really horrible video to watch.

I've seen this clip for years and never understood why the program did not air the entire song since it was so huge
shyman99 Usually they don't record album versions of songs on these music programmes because they are long. They always select the shorter single versions so that they can add in more songs to any one programme and also to make programmes look equal and unifrom. I think this is the reason.
@@janath9118 - I wasn't referring to the album version. I'm referring to how they didn't air the entire single version of the song.
