Enjoy your videos. You are so correct about the time involved for recovery of data on disc and tapes. I have been using these types of media since the late 60s and helping family and friends to recover those precious moments from years ago. Some who went down the rabbit hole of sending off their old films or tapes to be copied over to the latest media and get terrible results along with sometimes losing their originals. Later on with them finding out sooner or later that the newest media is no longer usable due to the shelf life it has. So many advertise lifetime expectations of the media not realizing some as you mentioned only has 5 years and some of the newer media has only 10 to 20 years at best. Always there be new improvements on media recording methods and a limited life of usage before decorating and no longer usable. I'm glad to see you show your views on what is involved with recovering old movies from years ago. Many feel it's just making a copy and only take a few minutes or maybe an hour at the most. Lol There is the cleaning process for both film as well as tapes and disc. Then, there's the copy process with trying to have a copy as good as the original. Afterward, there is the process of using desktop editing software to enhance and make the copy as good if not better than the original. It is all very time-consuming. Then, what many do not realize there is possible contamination from the media being copied where the equipment gets damage besides the wear and tear doing its use. There are so many factors involved, and the one main key factor is the person who is doing the recovery of their movies, knowing what to do and how to do it correctly. Thank you for all the effort and time in saving people precious moments. Over the years, I have learned much about data recovery with a variety of media used for computer devices as well as for film and video equipment and even today after so many years still continue to learn. Lol. I even still have in use at times some of my Dad old film editing equipment from the 1940s as well as most of the editing equipment I aquired years ago, along with data devices so that I can still access dsta on thise old computer drives from years ago. Lol. Keep up the excellent work as there are not many who have the knowledge and care to recover and restore the data from years ago. And you are so correct about how costly it can be at some of the data recovery sites that have specialized clean rooms and can pull data from hard drives.
Thank you for taking the time to explain to all the viewers on exactly what’s involved, you nailed it tremendously. It’s a blog post in itself! Cheers! Phil
Hey, i just finalized a disc but now when i put the disc in my computer it will say ''folder name is not valid'' with no videos inside the file. I can still see the videos inside my Handycam when i got the disc in the cam but when i wanna upload it on my computer there is nothing.
Welcome to my world lol! These mini DVD’s are the Bermuda Triangle of media formats. No rhyme or reason, just a complete rushed out, non uniformity s*it show. Try CD roller if you want to go down the rabbit hole of data recovery, if you’d like me to do them, I am available.
Is there a player that can play a finalized disc? Our family has some old mini discs. Can we just put them in any disc player? Grandfather wants to see his son who passed. My wife's brother. Can you help please?
If discs are finalized, you can put them in any dvd player, there’s a small indent in all trays for the smaller discs. If they’re not finalized, that’s a rabbit hole, I offer disc recovery services.
as said in the video there was bucket load DVD standards, when DVD was new, and that just recordable ones, and the re-recordable ones there 4 or 5 standards, and that just a drive in your PC
I have some unfinalized mini disc I'm looking to finalized myself. I've misplaced the original camcorder over the years but I know it was a Sony Handicam. It looks just like the 1st one you tried out in this video. Do you know if I get another Handycam if it will finalized the disc? Do you happen to know the model of the one you attempted? It looks exactly like that one! I do have several that were finalized from the same camera.
I have little discs a lot of them , about 10 pieces and a original camera what still works but nobody seem to know how to fix those discs as they have been taken out of camera without formatting so they are not working anymore . I am located in Latvia , is it possible to send camera and discs to you to fix ?
I've had mixed results with recovering unfinalized video from different cameras in the past using various softwares, haven't done it in years and hadn't heard of CD roller before. Now looking at my sister's old Sony handycam, she died from cancer and my nieces asked if I could fix it, which I could, at least partially - got it to turn on again, but the viewer screen is beyond my abilities to fix (there's only perhaps a third of it on the side closest to the rest of the camera that displays as usual, rest of the screen is just a rainbow-like mess of colors, verified to be an issue with the screen by sticking in one of my own old mini-DVD's that I know to be in good state). The recordings on the mini-DVD RW are unfinalized, camera should still be able to do the finalizing but with the busted screen there's no way to navigate the menu for that. Trying to find a used one to use for finalizing turned out an impossible task, and the only shop in my area that still offers repairs on old handycams pointed out that they basically can't do anything beyond what I can do, and getting the parts to repair this particular model handycam would require the invention of timetravel so they're on that same dead-end road as I am. That handycam won't become a family heirloom, but it looks like I'll be shelling out the 49 bucks for CD Roller in a few days so at least my nieces will have whatever my sister recorded back then.
i have some mini sony dvds from my childhood (2000s) and are readable using a regular dvd player but I want to have them saved in a different format in fear of losing those memories. can i use a dvd to usb for my laptop to read the files and copy them over to my laptop?
Hi! They need to be converted from dvd to mp4. Need software, time and patience! I can do them if you don’t know what you’re doing or don’t have the time.
thanks so much for this!! I have the original camera for these mini dvds, but the "finalize" option in the menu on the camera is faded out and I'm unable to "select " that option in the menu. I am in camera mode and followed the user manual. Any idea what is going on?
Just a quick question, my Mini DVD seeming shows Movie Recording DIsabled on my Sony Handycam, i can't finalize it and the reason for all of this was the camera was dropped one day and the disc came loose, the camera still reads disc but my original disc can't be finalized and might have scratches, do you think its restorable and could you potentially save it, it has some vacation videos that i don't have copies of (the Mini DVD was recorded on a Sony Handycam DCR-DVD108)

I have a disc that is not finalized, and I can't finalize it, seemingly because of a scratch somewhere. So annoying!
Welcome to my world! One small scratch and gonzo, terrible format engineering.

@gotmemories i believe they have been finalized. Thank you. Your the best

Facts! Thanks for the comment!

Trial and error buying Sony camcorders, some might work some might not. Good luck!

Possibly. Email info@gotmemories.com

Don’t know you ended up on my recommended but I like it
Great!

Could be a number of things. Search the camera model on eBay and buy a few more, they’re all dying and becoming hard to find so asap get on it.
Can you write 8cm dvd in modern dvd burners
If the footage fits yes
@@gotmemories and it will fully compile it to where it can be watched on the DVD drive without having to buy or fine one of those cameras?
What do i do if my DVD is finalized, plays on my camcorder, but cannot be read on my external hardrive? Im trying to use VLC to covert VOB into MP4.
Try another drive or computer or reading software. Hard to diagnose via TH-cam comments. Keep plugging away.
Im trying to find blank disc to do more recording. Is the Sony disc the only one i can use to record? Thanks in advance
You can use any disc
what is the best way to digitize them to PC or iMac?
Check the channel, lots of ways. Depends if they’re finalized / have issues. It’s a nightmare format.

Unsure if it can be saved. I’d try cdroller, $75 program.
Thanks god i found your video
Glad I could help
