What It Costs To Heat A Chateau...

  • In todays video, we show you what we have been up to in the last week. Firstly, Carole shows the design she has created on the panelling of the en suite door, followed by a design idea of using plaster to create an embossed look with a stencil.
After this, we see the boiler being installed, and Adrian gives a quick rundown of what it takes to heat up a chateau our size... in a few words, it takes a lot...
And finally, we see the work Carole has done in the guest bedroom in preparation for family staying at Christmas! All in all, a busy week.

For the best affect with gold gilding, paint the area to be gilded with red paint and gild over the top. When silver gilding use sky blue paint and sizing (tacky glue) to prepare the area, then guild. The paint underneath the gild makes the gold and silver stand out. :)

I love how adventurous and creative you are getting…especially like the plastered scroll…would use this in special area by connecting the scrolls with the plaster effect. I grew up in Victorian home, on the bottom of the wall it had raised embossed flowers and it came from Europe as a wallpaper.
So if you want a special effect somewhere in the chateau it would be beautiful. You have really done an amazing job..👏🏻👏🏻💐

I loved the way the gold paint turned out instead of the gold leaf on the door. Very rich looking. And i am going to show my age, lol, i have seen the plaster with a stencil technique eons ago, loved it then and now. Great job. Maybe since matching the plaster finish with same color in paint is turning into a chore, just pick a totally new color for all the other walls. Be a little less stressful. Keep up all your good work and take care of yourselves.

I'm obsessed with the plaster stencil, what an enchanting embellishment. Looking forward to seeing the final effect, when ever that comes about. You make it all look so easy but I'm sure its very hard work. The bathroom door gilding really brings everything up doesn't it, the taping off is a lot of work but it seems an easier method than applying the gold leaf. The next few weeks will be exciting as you get ready for your arrivals. Be sure and take care of yourselves so you can enjoy the festivities.

I really liked our reclaimed cast iron radiators when we renovated a school house in Normandy in 2002. We bought 4 for 30 euros each. From a working system. 2x 12 column x 14 sections x 2ft high and 2x 4 column by 12 sections x 900 high wide. The heat as you say is fantastic. Our 3 bed stone house was around 95sqm and we had 13 radiators totalling 20kw output. Originally fitted a cheap Lamborghini oil boiler, but in 2008 took it out as getting through 600 litres in 6-8 weeks. Grandparents liked the heat. Replaced with a Villager boiler stove. 25 cubic metres of wood ran the radiators for 7 months of winter. Cost around 700 euro then in 2008 all seasoned, cut, delivered and ready to burn. The 3 cast iron radiators in the living room once the stove was installed in the room we could turn off as the stove heated the old school room of 35sqm and 4.2 metre high ceiling. The stove heated the 10 radiators.

Carole, I love the gilded paneling! And the plaster stencil is genius! We have a product here in the USA called "Rub N Buff". I'm not sure if you can get it in France or the UK (Amazon has it). It is more expensive than metallic spray paint, but less expensive than gold leafing. It works great! It comes in a tube and you can use your finger or a small paintbrush to apply it. Just a little dab goes a long way. It comes in many metallic colors. I recommend it if you can get it. Love from North Carolina USA

It is good you now have a working boiler. If your radiators are too hot to touch, your thermostat is probably too high. We have cast iron radiators (100+yrs old) in our home in Saskatchewan Canada. Radiant heat is amazing because it heats up the objects in the room not just blowing warm air into the room. We keep our thermostat at 21.5 C for daytime and 16 C for night time. In the summer we turn off the heating part and just retain the hot water.
I am amazed at how fast the work is progressing, we have been working on our home, a fraction of the size of yours, for the past 7 yrs.
Not having a listed building was a wise decision, too many hoops to jump through with them.

Hi guys great job. Oh yes, warmer outside than in! Third winter here now for us and we’re in the south! Why not consider running individual pellet stoves and log burners. One ducting pellet stove can heat up to three rooms. This also means you can control zones too. So you could just run two stoves when it’s just you two, then run 3 or four stoves when the family are over? It’s the solution we have gone for now. 👍

Will look into this but I feel 1 boiler would be more efficient long term and take up less room. We can still isolate the zones not required by just closing off the rads. Next task for me will be to put thermostats on the rads and then hook the system up to my phone for better control.

I think the gold leaf on the plaster flowers etc., look lovely but not so much on the insets on the doors. I think it would look more elegant plain because the insets don’t require highlighting. Same with baseboards - it looks more seamless if they are the same colour as the walls.

Painters tape or green frog tape known here in Canada works way better than masking tape. Because it is a low tack tape it doesn't pull off paint underneath. Your doing an amazing job and keep up the good work - just thought this would save you some touch up work.

Plastering stencil👌🏻👏🏼 Could you spray paint it gold, after it is dry & b4 removing the stencil? Or would it muck up your stencil to much? Not be able to use multiple times? OR could your spray paint plaster with a water base color, then scrub stencil for reuse again? Would spraying PAM ( A fine spray oil for cooking)on the plastic stencil then plaster, dry & paint work? Making it easier to clean between uses. Would have to prevent PAM from touching the wall?

In the US we use blue painter's tape instead of masking tape. The painters tape is a little less tacky but tacky enough that it seals the edge but not so tacky that it takes off wall, door or trim paint.

There's two adults and one 3 year old, for now they can share a double and a 4 foot, until I find the right bed, but this will hold up the decor, as I am planning details either side of the bed, but the width will determine where on the wall I place the panelling. Just another delay that we are used to.
