Context for Olga's ruthlessness: The 20 men who came to demand that she marry Prince Tal, had also just murdered Olga's husband: King Igor. Prince Tal was the man that murdered Igor, meaning the men were demanding that she marry her husband's killer. So her acts after were to avenge him.
It was also believed that Tal would have murdered Olga’s infant son Sviatoslav. So to use a bear metaphor (because Russian) mama bear killed Tal to protect baby bear and avenge papa bear.
Interesting fact, the flaming birds idea was recycled by the US during WWII, but with bats. A bunch of bats would have tiny napalm bombs attached to them, induced to hibernate, be stuffed in a parachuting bomb casing, and released over a Japanese city. The reason it didn’t see combat despite working as intended was to make room for the Manhattan Project.

There's a reason humanity became the apex predators of the entire planetary food chain, and it ain't because we're good at hugging or particularly strong or fast. We have two advantages. Endurance and our brains. We bred based on who could hunt, fight, and kill the best for several _hundred thousand years,_ got better at killing than anything else that ever lived, and only started settling down for civilization in the past, oh, eight thousand or so. The outcome was inevitable.
Ah yes, the age old strategies of camping and turtling brought to an end by the invention of the boomstick and his older brother the explosive ball launcher
That's where the word "undermining" comes from. Defenders wised up to the tactic pretty quickly, and started counter mining, or pouring boiling oil down into the tunnels, or venting thick smoke into them to suffocate the sappers doing it.
6:05 From what I have learned it mostly involved starving the enemy out. Taking a castle by assault requires a huge amount of soldiers and other resources. Starving them out takes less.
Fun fact, the US actually developed “bat bombs” very similar in function to Olga’s fire birds for use against Japan in WWII. They were tested and found to be effective but were never actually deployed. They would attach an incendiary device with a timer to bats, shove them in a cluster bomb case then drop them over enemy territory just before dawn. The bats would find a place to rest for the day then the incendiaries would light. Bats have a knack for getting into difficult to reach places so these fires would go unnoticed until it was basically uncontrollable.
Nope, testing found the bats would freeze to death in transit because the bomb bay of a B-29 isn't heated. Also would only work once before people started looking for bats after a bombing raid.
11:05 The US almost deployed a similar technique using bats in WW2 for Japan. They were going to drop "bombs" filled with bats that had incendiary charges attached to them which would go off after a certain amount of time. It was designed to give them enough time to nest in a home and then the charge would go off. It accidentally had devastating effects in *the US* in the small scale testing they did and it's been estimated it would've been far more catastrophic than even the nuclear bombs that were dropped. It's terrifying to think about
10:35 Harald Hadrada was inspired by this when he lead the Byzantine Varangian guard on the conquest of Sicily. He noticed that, in one particularly well defended city, a lot of the commoner’s homes were made of straw and had a lot of birds nests in them, so he caught the birds as they flew out of the city for food and pretty much did the same thing Olga did

The crazy part was Sam didn’t even go that far into olga, she did much more brutal stuff, also the town she burned had killed her husband who was a tax collector and strung him around a tree by his organs
They also used cats to set fires inside the territories of castles to force the locals out. This might be out of your area, but how much of modern weaponry is a derivation from medieval weapons? For example how Greek Fire and Napalm are related.
Well, everything is derived from the past. A spear is a pointy stick, perhaps even a stick with a pointy rock, then they made a stick that could launch a pointy stick with a pointy rock, then they thought, hey, we can use this powder to make a hollow stick throw rocks really fast
Little Addition to the Olga / Drevlian Story: Before this episode the Drevlian Chief had Olga's Husband murdered by ripping him appart between 2 springy young trees, and it was very likely that her son would not have survived long under a new Stepfather.
