I finally pulled the trigger and got the 6505+ 112 combo I use with an external cabinet with v30s. Why on earth did I wait so long to get one? It’s the brutal metal tone I’ve been searching for. My mods and sims all had a 5150/6505 and I have to tell you they never sound anything like a real one in the room next to you. They’re an okay approximation but they just aren’t the same. I wish I had gotten 5150/6505+ 20 years ago. I couldn’t be happier with it. I highly recommend them to anybody looking for that brutal metal tone. And you don’t even really need a boost although it’s still nice to have one to tighten things up a bit.
So far it looks like I'm the only weirdo in the comments that greatly prefers the green channel! My favourite settings (all numbers on the dial, not o'clock): GREEN CHANNEL!!! High input, Pre gain 4, bright and crunch on, Low, 3.5, mid 10, high 7.5, Rhythm post gain 4, res 7.5 pres 6.5. Yes, the settings require earplugs, but the post gain being above 3 is the key. Would love to see how you go with those compared to your favourite settings. Slight tweaks depending on your pickups etc.
Whenever someone asks for settings on a 5150/6506 amp, I always tell them to put all the dials at noon and go from there. Very cool that you've compared that setting to your preferred settings. Your preferred settings are similar to what I have my 6505+ set up with. (With ts9 boost) - Pre = 3.9, Low = 5.2, High = 6.9, Resonance = 7.6, Presence = 7.9 I might try increasing my lows a bit based on what you've done here and see if that helps any. Thanks for another great sounding video!!!
Such a great kind of video. I play the 5150 with a 4×12 cabinet in the studio room. Settings of gain and eq are similar to yours but much less resonance and presence at say noon position. That difference could be caused by the very high volume even at a low post gain on lead channel. Anyway your tone sounds absolutely huge! I am really looking forward to see the ENGL Fireball 25 as well, which I use at home. Both with my Ibanez RG's.
Dude, you should definitely do a series of these with all of your amps. I was struggling to get a good tone out of a plugin, wondering why, then copied your settings here and it instantly sounded like a million bucks. Really impressed by your knowledge and year for tone. Hoping for a Marshall settings. Cheers!
Great demo I'm still saving for one. Definitely the best amp for Heavy Metal and Hardcore IMHO. I've noticed most all my favorite guitarist use this bad boy.
I got one a couple months ago. Wish I had gotten one a couple decades ago. So much wasted time with mods and sims trying to get the 5150/6505 tone and none of them sounded like a real one. I recommend to anybody who plays metal. Also made sure to put an EQ in the loop. It’s makes the amp sing. I couldn’t imagine playing without the eq. It makes that big a difference.
Great demo!! The settings at noon sounds kinda like you've squeezed the best possible tone out of an average amp. The tweaked settings blew it out of the water! I usually scoop the mids a little more, but I'll give this a shot...and I'll try not to be too scared of the presence and resonance from now on. Haha
Cool video! I liked the tone slightly better when the Resonance was a touch lower, maybe around 6-7. The most important control on these amps when dialling tones in is the master volume, its like a global tone control. It can really change the behaviour of the midrange based on where its set. IMO it sounds best around where you had it, and the rest is quite straight forward from there. If the MV is around 4, the sound gets quite thick and bloated which can be very hard to dial out with the EQ controls.
Tone is all about context to the mix. An amp soloed may sound like crap but then put it into a mix it was equalized for and it sounds awesome. I like your settings better, they sound thicker/fuller. However to my ear the noon settings actually sit out of the way of the drums and make the drums sound clearer and more present
I just picked up a 6505+ 112 cheap... didn't like the speaker so I put in a Cel 12H-75 and loving it now. My settings are very close to yours with just a little less Presence then I modify the gain depending on the guitar. Very nice to see someone tweaking the setting in a similar way!
I got one recently. I got a 212 v30 cabinet and man it sounds awesome. Wish I had gotten one ages ago. Wasted so much time on mods and sims trying to get the 5150/6505+ tone when I should have just gotten the real things a couple decades ago. I also put an MXR 10 band EQ with the griffin effects silent night mod and boy does that thing make my amp sing. I was totally shocked. I highly recommend throwing one in the loop if you haven’t already. I was happy with my amp but I’m in love with it now with the EQ.
Thanks for the video John! I have a 6505+ head which i adore and i've now learned to dial it in a bit better, especially with the power amp section. Great work here!
Mine is on the 666 setting, same with Resonance and Presence, and don't usually use a boost either. I'll give yours a try though, I don't usually like having the Presence up as high.
This is one of maybe 3 amps I've ever heard that actually sounds good with settings at noon. Maybe that's just me, but I think it's already solid like that which is just a testament to how excellent this amp really is.
Please do a dial-in on the Line 6 Spider Valve HD!)). Not the Mark II. I own it and am waiting for my guitar so I have not turned it on yet and no one seems to have a decent video of how to dial this amp in. Thanks!
Hey John, have you ever though about bringing out your own rhythm guitar course? I am recently checking the internet for courses that teach me phrasing and rhythm patterns like you play them and I find.... NOTHING. No really, having listening to you presenting amps had me feeling like I need to learn what you do- but I do not have tabs to do so. If you ever consider tabbing down what you play, please let me know- I would pay for that! I really would!
If you haven’t done one already (I haven’t searched before typing 😅) seeing you do this with a Mesa mark V would be interesting since those can be tricky with all the many adjustments on those…
Maybe I should change the speakers in my 2x12 it gets kinda close to yours but it feels off, but when I turn on my mxr10 its totally a different world. Guh I just love this amp.
Sounds great! I have my EQ at 667, the resonance lower, the presence about the same. I like that sound a lot, but I have to admit, it's kind of a one trick pony. That one sound is great, but not much else to offer.
I have a love hate with presence. Some amps benefit from less, like a SLO. Lots of girth without the razors. Some amps need it to sit in the mix. I go back and forth on presences depending on the sound in the DAW vs through a live cab.
Jon have you tried the new Ownhammer RockBox IRs? I just grabbed the free 1 today and holy smokes!!! I’ve never heard or felt an IR that felt and sounded that real and inspiring! In this video, he's using the lead channel. But there is people who prefer the sound of the boosted rhythm channel. I'm not sure that a lot of people are boosting the lead channel.
I cannot post gain much past 1 indoors with my 6505+ and 4 x 12. but the magic for sure is the presence dialed up around 8 lets the solo's be heard on lead channel, no pedals required for me. although in the hunt for dgital delay. Love me some 80"s metal. @@SonicDriveStudio
