He's extremely smart, he knows so much about everything that he lost his mind. Now he has given up all links to world and sees everything as brand new, everything fun and beautiful. Nothing is important to him and hence equally beautiful. He also loves the imperfection in life, the chaos, the drama it brings. He's tired of the idea of perfection, it is boring.

For I-no's story you're kind of correct, she basically has godlike powers and can even travel through time. That's why her song has such a pessimist outlook on life talking about her experience with not knowing what's true and what's real besides the fact that everything is meaningless.
(youtube ate my happy chaos essay so imma make it short feel free to correct me)
Happy Chaos is essentially the first person to discover magic (thats where the it took me 10 years to find the answer) comes from but now he just lives to have a fun time and a life full of "drama"
Ramlethal's theme is very interesting because it shows a slow progression of her becoming more human and realizing what there is to life. She's a valentine which is essentially a robot artificial human thats extremally powerful. The theme starts in another language to show how at first she didn't understand anything about humans or life, then she slowly gets more and more experience and meets people who help her and accept her.
Zato's theme is about how he's died and been reborn without any of his memories. He had a dark past and was the leader of an assassins guild for some time until he died and his shadow demon Eddie took over his body, but THEN eddie was killed as well and now theyre both reborn but Zato lost his memories (also hes blind because thats the price he paid for being able to control Eddie)
Baiken's story is all about REVENGE BABY WOOOO LOVE REVENGE but remember kids, revenge bad and gets you nothing (You got it right she is japanese and in the guilty gear universe japan was completely destroyed so thats why she wants revenge) she wanders the world in search of "That Man". The man responsible for basically ALL the problems in the guilty gear world.

@@Kara-de5cz Math rock isn't something you would like without understanding it. For thoes who don't know it's essentially manipulation of time signatures in the song "mathematically perfect" so that it doesn't sound like it's mistakes or not being in sync, but actually has melody and stuff. As i said, making "mistakes" and instruments playing in their own tempo but sounding good and making a song out if it, which for thoes who don't know is just mistakes and synch problems rather than a song, too chaotic. Newbies usually focus on 1 instrument they like in the song, and when in contrast to that they hear drums that aren't in line with their fav. instrument or something like that - it freaks them out, like scratching a plate with a fork. For anyone wondering for examples of math rock - "American football - never meant", which is something i think a lot of people would recognise hearing before.

I didn't see anyone comment about the japanese part on Baiken's theme, so I got some info from Reddit to clarify and complement everyone's else comments:
The japanese part is a actual a Chant from Buddhism, being a transliteration from Sanskrit to Chinese characters to Japanese, except the "narakuni utauwa rokkonshoujo" part which is purely Japanese.
"Praise be to the flawless, all-pervasive illumination of the great mudra [or seal of the Buddha ].
Turn over to me the jewel, lotus, and radiant light. Chant from the naraka, rokkonshoujo."
"rokkonshoujo", literally translating rokkon shoujo: "purification of the six senses", is a Buddhist phrase signifying that you will come closer to nirvana once you let go of obsession that comes from the six parts of your being, which is eyes, ears, nose, tongue, body, and mind.
This chant is the Mantra of Light, also called the Mantra of the Unfailing Rope Snare.

Also there is a more modern interpretation for Rokkonshoujo. Shoujo meaning young woman, could be interpreted as rock on young lady.

55:24 That's actually spot on. I won't delve too much into lore, but Zato essentially died, was cotrolled by this shadow - Eddie, and then reborn, only to be incomplete - he lost his emotions and ability to feel them. He gave his word to Millia to be always by her side, which he clearly coldn't do being dead, and so when he's reborn he's no longer loving towards Milia and can't express himself, but the memory of the promise still lingers, so even without his emotions and love towards Millia, not *conscious* , he still remains by her side, wanting to honor his self that was able to feel and love.

alone infection's later part always gives me chills because i saw this one video where it's like, comparing faust in gameplay vs. lore, and the lore bit had that exact part play with an animation of faust in a hospital room. one showcases him taking notes on a chair to the patient, the next moments the patient is gone entirely, but occasionally appears as a flickering shade, and faust progressively gets more and more depressing. from turning towards it, to going crazy over it, to weeping in its place lying on the bed as he is now in strive.

    Some context about the characters:
I-No (pronounced like Brian Eno): Woman with time-warping powers who tried using her abilities to save her lover and make the world a better place. However, every time she tried, things got worse, causing her to become increasingly jaded and nihilistic, eventually causing her to pledge her loyalty to one of the main antagonists of the setting.
Happy Chaos: The game's version of a messiah, kind of, who glimpsed the secrets hidden behind the truth of reality, and lost his mind as a result. He fights with guns (which are hyper illegal in-setting) because fighting normally would make things too easy and uninteresting.
Ramlethal Valentine: A member of the Valentine "family" that was created to help bring about the end of the world. However, she was persuaded to turn against her creator and embrace humanity, and has since been trying to carve out her own sense of identity and morality.
Zato-1: A man with a quasi-demonic entity bound to him as his shadow, which he manipulates to kill people. A member of the Assassin's Guild, he died for a bit, as did his shadow, but both were brought back as emotionless monsters solely dedicated to the well-being of Milia Rage.
Baiken: A samurai who forswore her own femininity to take up the blade after most of her village was slain when she was a child, dedicating her life to revenge. Except over the years she has come to question that pursuit of vengeance, and now seeks purpose in an oath she swore to protect someone else.

Baiken's theme is one of my favourites! It tells her whole story of living a life of revenge after her village was destroyed. She's a 'time exile' since she's stuck in the past, never fully moving forwards and casting everything aside for her hellbent pursuit of revenge. By the end of the song, she's found a different purpose in life. Rather than being a blade that cuts down, she instead 'cuts free'. And I absolutely love that line in the song - "no, don't stand still!".
The title works so well too. Before, Baiken was just all about revenge, but by being a 'mirror of the world', that means giving unto others as she has received. She's had people help her out before and she intends to 'mirror' that kindness and compassion onto others.

Zato's theme is legit my favorite. The emotion, the instruments, the storytelling, all of it. As the memes say, there is no "good part", the ending is the prize, the whole song is great.
An interesting point, most people won't even hear the end cause of how long the song is, some theorize it's as if Zato needs time to collect and compose himself to work through his trauma for that end. The beginning being muffled could be him being emotionally suppressed, but a core of his being knows he had feelings for Millia. The end is him being pulled out of the shadowy abyss, to remember what it's like to have emotions, and wanting to be by Millia's side, to help pave her way.

With Zato, the shadow blob with the smily face is a shadow parasite named Eddie. He was kind of a jerk before but that was mostly because he was having an existential crisis , unable to tell where his thought and feelings ended and where Zato's began. It led to Zato basically having to constantly fight to keep him in control. Also it's funny you say Zato looks like a male prostitiue from hell as he has in fact been there. In the past Eddie killed him to take over his body, shortly before Eddie died since he couldn't find a new host, so they both ended up in hell before being revived. The suffering Zato endured there basically wiped his memories and left him an emotionless husk. Because of this, Eddie has now realized his own free will without interferance from Zato, plus he's learn what awaits him if he tries to kill zato again, so he's now works with Zato of his own will.
And my favorite thing is for the line "i'm a shadow always with you" the high pitched voice is the singer for Millia's theme. And the only emotions Zato retained when he came back from hell was his long lost love for Millia.
Sorry for the wall of text i just really like Zato's character.

I love how good you are at analysing both the musical structures and the lyrics lol. You got alot of things correct. Although you were slightly wrong about Baiken. GG Strive is supposed to tie off many loose ends, and her lyrics reflect that.
"My vengeance will be a sacrifice, then kill the pain" symbolises her giving up her rage and plans of revenge, and "I will be a mirror of the world" dictates how the world is finally entering an era of peace, and as such, she will settle down too. Her arc in this game is her realising she does have people who are always there for her and that she does not need to waste time and sacrifice herself for the sake of revenge.

You were spot on with Zato's theme. It seems to be about Zato breaking out for a bit and able to feel again when he thinks about Millia. The metal parts with the raspier singing is Zato letting Eddie lash out for him since he doesn't feel anything anymore.

Happy Chaos is such an interesting character, and his theme reflects it perfectly. He "stirs the pot" that is society so nothing catches and burns. The part of the theme that says "when the violent storm is over, the blue sky is more beautiful then ever" is such a perfect resume of the character.
I will say, I always get a little emotional listening to Drift every time.

I love Necessary Discrepancy to death ever since I heard the full song. It's a masterpiece as a composition, but it also embodies the themes of Guilty Gear Strive: acceptance and self-actualization. Accepting the world, good and bad, all of it, and learning to love the world, and forging your own path.

I loved your reactions and just let me drop a little bit of info on my personal favorite which is Baiken's theme. The section of the song which is sang in Japanese is actually The Mantra of Light. It's an important mantra used sometimes in funeral rites for someone who has accumulated bad karma on their life and people want to grant them to a second chance of being rebirth favorly in the afterlife. Almost as a matter of cleansing their sins. I love this detail because it speaks so much of Baiken's character. Here I leave the reference to all this.

Second batch, let's gooo!! If you don't mind, I'll sum up the character themes' context once more for you!
    - "Requiem". We're starting with I-No. I-No is a genuine manifestation of mankind's hope, sealed within a mortal body. As an irregular existence, she can move through time freely, and she originally made use of that in order to help humanity towards a great future, without realizing her true purpose. However, nothing she tried to do had much of an effect, even making things worse at times. This inability frustrated I-No at first, but eventually threw her into a state of depressive nihilism. She has come to resent the world that refuses to heal, and vents her frustrations by being an insufferable, foul-mouthed, sadistic bitch to basically anyone. By the events of Guilty Gear Strive, she has simply grown tired of having such incredible power, yet feeling powerless against despair, and teams up with Happy Chaos to become "complete" again. Her theme reflects her sense of helplessness in the face of a world rapidly destroying itself, while being burdened with the hope of humanity in her heart. It pains her to envision beautiful moments that seem all but impossible for reality, so she is forced to watch everything crumble, but she hasn't given up entirely yet, as reflected with the more hopeful conclusion of her song.
    - "Drift" represents Happy Chaos, the man with the most fitting name in the world. Happy Chaos was the first to discover "The Backyard", a dimension of pure concentrated magic that defines the laws of the world, leading to magic entering the world. Within the Backyard, he also found I-No, a being comprised of mankind's hope condensed into a single being. But as her power would lead to indescribable destruction, he takes half of it as a safeguard, gaining the attention of the "Universal Will" (think of it as the god of the Backyard), which forcefully fuses him with the power he stole. This destroyed his psyche, causing him to lose his sense of morality, replacing it with an almost childlike curiosity towards cause and effect. Then, during the "Crusades" (a 100 year war between mankind and the titular "Gears"), he leaves the Backyard and basically causes the vast majority of tragedies that would lead to the current events, just to see the ensuing drama. In Strive, this plan of his continues, and he teams up with I-No to cause as much chaos and destruction as possible and observe the resulting fallout. He loves to play tricks, get into peoples' heads, and observe the extend of human resolve. He doesn't destroy because he hates everything, but because everything is so fascinating and beautiful to him that he wants to see it all - including destruction.
    - "Necessary Decrepancy" is the theme of Ramlethal Valentine. She is a creation of the "Universal Will", designed to wage war against humanity and help resurrect the leader of the Gears, "Justice". Originally emotionless, she becomes irritated by her defeat at the hands of Sol Badguy, but is captured by him and Ky. In the hands of her "enemies", however, she is confronted with many conflicting impressions, awakening desires wthin her and lighting a spark of emotions. She switches sides to save her sister, Elphelt Valentine, who is in turn captured by the Universal Will to take Ramlethal's place, and ultimately resolves to protect the people she has come to care about. The song mostly focuses on her learning to understand her own emotions and conviction, striving to become a more complete being and fully breaking free of her origin as a tool of destruction. However, she struggles to comprehend the irrational nature of man, and sometimes wonders how far she can go before it might go wrong.
    - "Let Me Carve Your Way" is the theme of Zato-1 (which can be read as "Zatoichi"). He is a member of the Assassin's Guild, at one point even its temporary leader, and Millia's mentor, ex, and suffering, all at once. He is fused with one of the Four Forbidden Beasts, a demonic creature called Eddie, which resides in his shadow. In previous events, Millia succeeds in killing Zato, but Eddie continues to carry Zato's dead body to stay alive himself. Eventually, Zato becomes the first mortal creature to be successfully resurrected by the genius doctor Faust, albeit with his soul long departed. Because of this, he now is utterly emotionless and rational. Despite that, he concludes from his memories and experiences that his greatest purpose is to support Millia, becoming her protector as she takes over the Assassin's Guild. Because he has no soul, his statements are all based on rationale and logic, unless it comes to Millia. His theme reflects on how he dedicated his entire life to his love for Millia, and how that's all he has left in a world he simply doesn't care about. He muses about his past emotional obsessiveness with her, and how it came from genuine affection, but was still twisted into something creepy and harmful. But with his emotions no longer leading him into destructive tendencies, he can now follow his purpose to its absolute, "carving the way" for Millia as her "shadow".
    - "Mirror of the World" tells the story of Baiken, a one-armed samurai who led a life of hatred and revenge. During the Crusades, her family is violently murdered, while a 7-year-old Baiken loses an eye and an arm. With everything dear to her taken away, she demands revenge against "That Man", the enigmatic creator of the "Gears", living machines with powers rivaling natural disasters. To her, killing That Man is her entire purpose, and she is willing to spill the blood of all who stand in her way. She lives without remorse, justice, and mercy, occasionally drowning herself in alcohol to numb the pain. But over the course of the Guilty Gear story, her murderous resolve is redirected against Happy Chaos, who framed That Man for the disasters, but she comes to realize that living for revenge alone leads to only suffering and loneliness. And while she's willing to bear with that pain, she wonders if there is a point where she could finally find peace. Maybe she could even find another person to care for, a prupose beyond her self-destruction... Mirror of the World "reflects" on her thoughts, and how her revenge is still the most important thing in her life, but she also wonders what she's missing out on. Her greatest regret becomes the distance she put between herself and the people around her, but she isn't willing to abandon her path of revenge for that - not until the deed is done.
As an aside, the japanese parts of the song are a buddhist chant known as the "Mantra of Light", which can be interpreted as a plea to cleanse one of bad karma, and be granted relief from the burden of accumulated sin. The most common translation of it goes: *"Praise be to the flawless, all-pervasive illumination of the great mudra [or seal of the Buddha ]. Turn over to me the jewel, lotus and radiant light".* It bears mention that Baiken is anything but religious, so this is moreso an indication of just how much blood Baiken has on her hands.
This time, I've thrown around some of the more complex and confusing topics about Guilty Gear's lore, so I apologize if this was a bit difficult to understand. But I think the general character ideas still remain understandable enough to follow the context of the lyrics.

    • @patientnr.0409
      @patientnr.0409 ปีที่แล้ว

I-Nos "beautiful moments" are dates she went on with Will(Axl) but since they never happened in this timeline she looses her memories of them to the point she can't even recognize her lover and thus she looses her grip on reality.
The song itself is her, well, Requiem. It's her final thoughts as she dies at the end of the story mode, her motivations, her actions, her regrets, her desires and in the end her epiphany and final wishes.
What created I-No and corruped Happy Chaos is actually unknown, the most common theory, both in lore and irl, is that the Backyard itself is sentient, the Universal Will on the other hand is an AI written by Happy Chaos to guide humanity and left to it's own devices until Revelator when he assumed direct control for a while in the finale.
Fun Fact Zato-1 is also the pronounciation of "that one" in engrish because Daisuke is a very goofy man.
His theme has two parts: one about Eddie being Eddie and one about Zato-1s feelings toward Millia, though through the chaotic nature of their relationship their parts converge all the time with Zato-1 seeking clarity and Eddie dragging him back into the abyss.
Tldr GG lore is a beautiful dumpster fire

I-No's story together with axel is a bit sad, and yes, she ascended in a specific way (don't want to spoil too much ^^)... but she definitely has good music.
happy chaos is literally like his lyrics... just a crazy mad man doing random stuff while also being the main antagonist of guilty gear strive's main story
Ramlethal is just cute af... A burger made her from a villain (previous game) into a supporting and supportive character. Story-wise, she was just a mindless executioner-ish girl who now slowly starts to experience the world in her own ways. Oh, and she has a cute puppy too xD
Zato and Millia were lovers until millia killed him... their story is kinda tragic, like i-no and Axel's are imo, but he also gave other characters their trauma (like Faust).
    Thanks for the video ^^

For Zato, yes, there are two consciousness in him. It's actually that shadow demon named Eddie.
In his story, Zato was Milia's boyfriend, who died one day and was resurrected when they put Eddie inside him. But as a result, he lost all of his memories. He only knows that Milia was someone important to him in his past.

    • @unnamed_protagonist
      @unnamed_protagonist ปีที่แล้ว +18

Almost. Zato had Eddie long before he died, in fact it was Eddie that killed him. Eddie was going through an existential crisis, since he was born as basically a shadow of Zato's soul, they shared a lot of memories and personality traits. He was unable to tell if he had actual free will or if it was all Zato. This led him to fight zato for control, slowly weakening him until Eddie managed to suceed and take over Zato's corpse. Then Eddie died as the corpes couldn't sustain him long enough to find another host.
Later both of them got revived, but Zato's time in hell had stripped him of his memories and left him an emotionless husk.

The story of Zato is very interesting, he died in the events of a previous game and was brought back to life a few years later. The concept of the afterlife is not very explored in the world of Guilty Gear but it seems to be a void of nothingness where there's no space and no time, Zato was brought back to the world of the living but as a different person, losing all memories and emotions he's alive but not living, that until he discovers he has some type of feeling when near Millia, he doesn't know if it's love or hate or whatever, he just knows he feels something so he vows to protect her as a way of protecting his only link to his lost humanity

Of all of these I really like Baiken's theme. The Japanese lyrics in the song are actually part of a Buddhist mantra that deals with the purification of the soul by letting go of worldly temptation. As you guessed, Baiken used to be a savage, a rônin hellbent on avenging her village, but who also was fully aware that that path would only lead her into hell and accepted those consequences.
However, she has now mellowed out quite a bit and the song is basically about her acknowledging her violent past but also overcoming it through her bonds with other people, mainly her comrade Anji and the little girl Delilah, for whom she acts as a sort of mother figure for, thus "purifying her soul".

Just an FYI , Madaru is just a mistake on the video editor's part. The actual lyrics would be 'Nan man da bu' , with Nan being the high-pitched scream you mentioned. It is a prayer about taking refuge in the light of Buddha, or something of that nature , whilst the japanese part afterward is the Mantra of Light.
EDIT : Forgot to mention , pretty much half the chorus also has wrong lyrics. As well as the 2nd verse. Not sure what was going on in the editor's head for this one.

Still bugs me that video for Mirror of the World has incorrect lyrics.
The main suspect being the scream vocals before supposedly "this is her way" are missed out saying "No forgiveness" followed actually by "Necessary" which is a lot more interesting.
Also worth mentioning, the Japanese vocals is the Buddhist mantra of light, a verse about redemption. Baiken spent her whole life bent on revenge, but ultimately finally gives up on it seeing the destructive elements of herself manifest in another with the same goals.

Ram's theme is one of my favorites. My interpretation is that it tells the story of her going from the cold, binary world of the Backyard, looking down on the "Foolish Loving World" full of discrepancy to eventually coming to love it. The female vocals and synthesizer representing the Universal Will and her Valentine heretage, while the male vocals and guitar represent her emerging humanity - with the analog rock elements eventually completely overtaking the digital synthesizer ones.

ITS FINALLY TIME! I’ve had this reply in my notes for months for whenever you did this reaction so, without further ado. I thought I’d provide context from comments I found as I myself don’t really play guilty gear but the song is in my opinion a perfect character theme, as the theme perfectly encapsulates him. So I’ll list a few comments, they do have spoilers about guilty gear lore so if you think you’d ever get into that stuff then ignore these, they’re a bit lengthy too.
AHylianWarrior - “This song IS exactly what Happy Chaos is. He’s a guy who takes life as it comes and does everything with as little effort as he can to make it exciting. He’s basically one of those characters who is basically “he’s the bad guy but not a bad guy” as the song puts it he lives for that calm after the storm. He brought magic to the world of guilty gear which did illuminate the world at a very dark time where they thought the end was coming, but that magic also opened up the possibility for these “gears” to be created which are essentially near indestructible monsters which nearly brought an end to humanity. However as a result, humanity prospered greater then ever before t where they could surpass even a god. He is a man who can bend reality to his will and yet is very patient, playful and sometimes just wants to go for a chill car ride.”
Shadowpulseforge - “the whole Schtick with this character is that he learned the “truth” about everything, so he just does things for the drama. For example, he uses a gun in the game because his magic would make things to easy. An interesting take on the “enlightened” archetype, instead of being nihilistic or whatnot, he just ended up finding things amusing. His whole story can be summed up in the starting quote of his song. “ it took me 10 years to find the answer to something… I forgot… about it in 2 seconds… That’s about it!” (Shout out to another song quote “I don’t have anything that’s really important to me. That’s why, everything is beautiful.”)”
AnimeFan82 - “Yes, the character’s name is “Happy Chaos”, and the song fits him perfectly. In lore, Happy Chaos is basically someone with a kind of outsider perspective of humanity. He actually loves humanity for it’s chaotic nature, and is just driven by the chaos and drama. In a sense, he’s both sociopathic in that he’s removed from society/humanity, while also being totally appreciative of society/humanity because it’s “beautiful”. His song, if you get the character, is perfectly describing him. It’s chaotic, while being reverent. “I don’t care about anything, so I love everything” vibes. He will “Drift” around humanity, as an apathetic, yet empathetic, observer of humanity.”

I love how most of Zato's song (which is the part you hear during matches, you never hear the ending during matches) is angsty and apathetic, reflecting how he doesn't have emotions anymore most of the time, but the end of the song (which tries to come in at the start but is drowned out by dark apathy, almost like his thoughts were interrupted) is a straight-up emotionally-charged *love song* declaring his devotion to the one person who can still draw emotion out of him... like he needed time to digest his thoughts and clear away the darkness first. Also, the names are an important part of the chorus in the other theme songs, but "Let Me Carve Your Way" is a phrase that only appears in the ending, and the chorus of the main part would probably give it a title like "Vanish Into Dark"... almost like the main part is a _false_ theme and the ending part is the _real_ theme. Amazing.

I think people laid most of the songs out, but if I could add my two cents:
In _Mirror of the World,_ the "Sever.....tear, fear" line could be interpreted as her playstyle. I'm a Baiken main, she's what you would call a "counter character", and her playstyle deals with parries and counter stances. "Sever" is her waiting for you to move against her, "tear, fear" is her punishing you for falling for her trap. 😊
