  • The most beautiful cities in Germany, Lübeck, Hanseatic City of Lübeck.
Lübeck has a charming center full of fine architecture with lots of church towers along which the river Trave flows.
Lübeck is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which is no surprise when you see how beautiful its historic city center is. Lübeck has the label of a city of freedom, law and prosperity. It was here that the famous Hanseatic League was created, which can be considered the forerunner of the European Union. The Hanseatic League was founded in the middle of the 13th century and soon became the largest trading power in the world, because at the time of its greatest glory it united 200 cities and took care of trade throughout Europe. And it was German Lübeck that was the center of the Hanseatic League and at the same time its richest city. And this was also reflected in the attractiveness of the old town, which was created on a small island with an area of approximately one kilometer by one and a half kilometers in the middle of the canals connected to the Trave River.
The medieval center of the city is even listed on the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage List. The main landmark of the city are the 5 main churches, whose towers are visible from afar. Probably the most interesting and certainly the most valuable is the island on the river Tráva, which, although it does not have a large area, offers an interesting concentration of monuments. On it you will find, for example, the town hall, a monastery, a district from the 13th century called Koberg, and then the church of St. Jakub, hospital of St. Ducha and the neighborhood of patrician houses from the 15th and 16th centuries. Mainly the monstrous Gothic temples exposed of brick and adorned with tall towers are breathtaking. E.g. Temple of St. Marie from the 13th century is the third largest in Germany, and its 125-meter high brick towers are among the landmarks of the city. About a fifth of the historic part was destroyed in an air raid in April 1942, but Lübeck is nevertheless gradually being thoroughly restored.
Another interesting thing is that the production of marzipan has a long tradition here. In Germany, Lübeck is a kind of center of marzipan. In the city, you will find several shops that offer real marzipan produced right here. The history of the production of this delicacy dates back to 1806. Since then, marzipan has been produced here without interruption. The recipes for the production of marzipan and nougat are of course secret, but the company cares not only about the taste, but also about the smell. According to the manufacturer, everything is made from only the highest quality raw materials.
For more than 300 years, the Hanseatic city of Lübeck, together with other cities, controlled trade from the Baltic to the North Sea. So Lübeck had a really important role because it was in the middle of it all.
Lübeck was also called the "city of seven towers", apparently because of the number of churches. Now it is mainly known for its marzipan. And the bonus is that the city of Lübeck can be visited as a day trip from big, bustling Hamburg. The largest historic center in Germany is spread over 100 hectares of historic streets under the supervision of the seven towers of Lübeck. Strolling around and exploring the historic center is definitely one of the best things to do in Lübeck. The classic street scene of Lübeck is rows of Renaissance gabled houses broken by passageways.
