    Love that you covered and you're going to Malta! I went to highschool there (weird, I know) and I remember sitting in Math class and the teacher just gasping in the middle of it and telling us that the Azure window collapsed! It was feared to be collapsing for a while, and unlucky for the window, spring 2016 was a particularly rainy and stormy time, and one day the storm was just too much. I loved just looking at the map and seeing all the familiar places I've been to before :D Hope you like Malta!!

    • @GeographyNerd
      @GeographyNerd 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Don Fatale AV and STV aren't necessarily the same though they both have the preferential ranking system. The big difference is that STV is normally used with multi-seat constituencies whereas AV is normally used in single-seat constituencies. It was believed at the time that switching to AV in the UK wouldn't actually be beneficial as it has the same disadvantages as the current system, as a lot of the votes are still wasted and there's only one party representing one constituency. STV is much more proportional and each constituency has a wider variety of parties and MPs representing it.

    • @GeographyNerd
      @GeographyNerd 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Don Fatale Well since UKIP was an extra-parliamentary party at the time and had a lot of opposition, it may have helped to have AV and they would have picked up some more seats, but I think that a lot of UKIP voters would have put Conservatives as a second choice, and since only one seat can be filled with AV, the Conservatives would have picked up a lot of 2nd place as well as its 1st place votes which would have still made them relatively successful. Also, there's the risk that many Lib Dem and Labour voters might have created a so called "cordon sanitaire" to try and avoid UKIP from winning the seat by putting the Conservatives as a second choice, which would in a lot of cases been enough for them to win the seat. The issue with single-member constituencies is that since there can only be one winner, there's a lot of strategical voting which can be amplified with AV.
      On one hand, AV could be beneficial but it is still flawed because of the amount of wasted votes, strategical voting, and the lack of variety of parties representing the constituency. On the other hand, it would give (a bit) more power to small parties, allow more people to have an actual say in the final result and people would feel like they had a bigger say in the democratic process. It's not as simple to count up the votes, however and it's more complicated for voters to understand. Also, some political scientists say that the resuts could be more skewed towards the large parties because they would pick up lots of 2nd place votes from small party voters, although that's debatable.
      I would personally say that a Proportional List system or STV would be better for the UK, because AV would still not solve some of the negative effects of First Past The Post. The UK has always been very focused on the importance of the local MP, and Constituency Representation. STV and Proportional List would require larger or fewer constituencies and there would be multiple MPs from different parties, which would be a drastic change from the current system. As long as the current two parties have a say in the electoral system used, then it won't be changing soon because of the fact that they would be big losers if the result was actually proportional. I suspect the reason the 2011 election was between FPTP and AV instead of FPTP and a Proportional System was because the change was small and the large parties wouldn't loose out as much.

    The Norwegian main highway (E6) is single lane for most of its length and is usually only two lane in urban areas...
    And we don't really have more then two lanes in each direction in any of our roads that I'm aware of...
    So looks legit to me at least...
    16:52
    Thank you for addressing the electoral system.
    And yes, single transferable vote is quite a lot better then the current first past the post system in the UK and US.
    I still think there's better approaches though.
    18:08
    And *that* seems bad. It reduces the amount of nuances of the political debate in the country and means that a significant amount of voters don't really have their views all that well represented politically (Even if SVT does ensure that there's a real vote for said minority views).
    Having just two significant poltical parties in a country is in my opinion harmfull for a nation.
    It's better with a 3 way split with the 2-4 biggest parties having 60% of the representation (roughly 30% on each side) and having many smaller parties on each side of the bigger ones and between them that still have genuine political power.

You will earn the respect of the locals. One thing that you didn't touch on is the high level of immigrants (legal, illegal, non EU, EU and boat people) which has drastically altered the demographic and cultural scene over the last few years. From Malta ✠ I have always been proud of my homeland, even though we might not have the technological advancements we deserve, like that of America's, or the mountains and valleys of West Virginia, we have something that not every country has, we have got very rich history(My favourite is St.John Knights era), we got temples of which are older than the pyramids of ancient Egypt themselves, and our language is very unique as it comes from many different origins(Arabic, Italian, English, Spanish, Turkish, etc.). I even got an ancestor whom of which served as a crusader and protected Malta from the Muslim attacks that were happening at the time. This my seem as boasting, and it is :D . Given that Malta has so many archaeological sites and other landmarks, thsi is a fairly minor loss. It is definitely not its biggest landmark. Or even Gozo's biggest landmark.

    And in Malta (unlike Canada, laughs this American annoyed by its sanctimonious virtue signaling) you can see paintings by Caravaggio.

      @@ProfessorEGadd - My point is that tiny Malta has works by Caravaggio whereas egotistical Canada does not. Canada "thinks" it's better than the U.S. The museums, universities, theme parks, etc. point to the opposite.

      @@SilvanaDil So you think Canada is egotistical, sanctimonious and thinks it's better than the USA. So you've decided to put them in their place by pointing out they lack any paintings by a particular early modern artist, unlike a totally different country which does. Bravo I guess? Do you think this is normal behaviour or do you recognise this as a superiority complex?

    Lol, finally I know where Malta is. I've been too lazy to look it up for too long. I was just always trying to imagine it in my head where it could be and considering I know the geographics of europea more or less, I was just thinking, somehow it doesnt fit anywhere in between the countries on the continent. Yeah, it's an island, I now know that. I guess I've been also mixing it up with Andorra.

    Interesting point about the two-party system but not fully explored. One of the other stand-out features of Maltese politics is the voter turnout which is always above 90%, making it the highest in the world (excluding places where voting is compulsory or where a dictator makes up whatever numbers they like).
    Almost nobody changes their vote from one party to the other, but lots of people vote to choose which party member gets elected. This means that a lot of the interesting politics is _within_ parties rather than between them. This keeps the parties as a whole highly responsive to what people want and avoids the two party stagnation seen is places with FPTP.
