The turbo noise is the best, I can't imagine the raw acceleration feeling. What I'm really curious about is what would Turbowski say with it on a lift?!
A friend of mine has an Atom 2. I can confirm they are a ton of fun to drive and the giggling while making all those steering correction is 100% accurate. It's a lot of fun to be that active while driving a car.
Speed Academy AND Savagegeese AND the Ariel Atom... I knew this would be a good video before watching it...and I was right ! Nice one guys. This car is a proper beast !
Absolutely love that thing!! The sounds, the speed, the sensation of everything around you and the physical struggle! What an experience to drive one!!
Nice review Dave! I had a little experience with an older supercharged Atom and it was the same thing. Kind of scary and a bit of a handful to put together a clean lap but they are properly fast.
Depends on the version. The older the Atom the more dangerous/lively they are. The 1 esp and the 2 were tricky esp without the wings. the 3 is v good esp with wings and the 4 looks the best by a long long way...
Great video! It's awesome you got to drive one in semi-anger. That particular car looks over sprung and/or over dampened for the grip of the R888R. With some setup changes it would be properly fast. I noticed the rear wing was at a serious angle (possibly outside of its effective range), probably in an attempt to calm down the nervous back end. Its hard to imagine that Ariel offered a 500 horsepower version of this car at one point. Thanks for literally taking your life in your hands for the TH-cam audience!
Yeah it can be really easy to blame tires for slow lap times, but I absolutely refuse to believe that it's the tires fault they couldn't post a better time than the Supra. I'd imagine a trip to a race shop for a proper suspension setup / alignment / corner balance would work wonders. Remember the Top Gear Atom 500 got to the top of that leaderboard on stock tires :)
I see a "Budget Atom" cage cart build coming on the channel. Similar to roadkill's C4, cletus's Leroy or the shart cart from hoonigan. Would be a fun project to watch youguys create over the winter.
Thanks for showing us the lap times. I had a feeling that despite the Atom's notorious reputation, you had infact a decent compression of what was going on. In layman's terms, after a few sessions I'm quite sure Mr chewing gum and hands on hips couldn't hold a candle to you. And he owns the car. Sure, in the wrong hands any car can be a "deathtrap" but you didn't nearly approach that level of insecurity. Having driven one myself, albeit with slightly less than 280whp it's an absolute pleasure to drive at 8/10ths if that's your sort of thing. Me I flogged it. Spun out twice and went back for more. Cheers, Michael in Milton.
Reminds me of my old 85 CRX with Pirelli Semi Slicks. When one of the rear tires would bite, it'd swing the car around into a U-turn unless you had a good grasp of the steering wheel. More traction may not be the solution for the Atom, but a more progressive spring setup would help.
Shouldn’t this car smoke any production car? How is the Supra faster? You mention the tires are a weak point, but these tires are far better than any street tire. Little confused.
Well, back in the day I talked crap in the comments about this car's lap time and now I actually own a supercharged Atom 3 and I'm struggling with similar issues to get a lap time that you would expect from the weight and power of the car. If you guys ever want to come visit Atlanta Motorsports Park, I'll be happy to have you out as my guests and let you review my Atom on track :)
Great vid. Mr Geese and I don't see eye-to-eye all the time, but i still respect him. These cars are impressive as hell. Something has to be holding this thing back, tires/suspension, testicle size? But what is scary is that damn BMW Supra's performance... What an underrated car. Toyota really tuned that thing well, and the 2021 is looking to be even better? Sheesh.
Atom is outta my price range, but Mark sums up why i want the atom more than any other track car; it's a car you have to work at to tame and gives a pure driving experience that is becoming rarer to find.
What a beast. I could probably drive it at maybe 1/4 throttle max. I've never driven anything that light or powerful, so I'd have no frame of reference.
Holy shit my blood pressure is raised and my pulse is going after watching those laps... This is from the comfort of my couch and I was feeling the stress. That turbo noise and the open air experience/wind would be ridiculous. I'm saving for an ND2 and want to put a turbo on it next year but maybe I need to save longer and pickup one of these used.
Man that turbo sound is soo good. But I can tell you where being super conservative about it. Even when you did get more aggressive it started quickly showing that it was stepping over the line of being controlled. Despite the lazy sound of the turbo/engine. I think radical has the right idea of putting a bike engine in their cars instead of a car engine, really hits the mark. By giving it a faster revving power plant with less of the torque coming on as fast as the car engines do. The delivery of torque becomes extremely important when the cars are so light. The other problem we might be seeing here is that you might not be going fast enough for the aero that is present on the car. So your in that area of feeling like your on ball bearings. Due to the track surface and lack of down force.
Yeah well the UK Atom (3.5R) had almost the same BHP (as the 3s) but lower torque (243 -v- 300) Actually makes it slightly easier for traction. I'm told the new 4 will have meaningful downforce but we only have renders of it atm so....
This is the Ariel Atom i have seen with a windscreen, normally they do not have. They used to make a V8 version ( think it was two motorbike engines joined?? ) it was almost 500hp!
You need to keep a wall speed record of every single car you do so the the times can be compared. Ideally with the car, the drivetrain, the lap time and the weight

"WHAT!" "WHAT?!?" Common! hahaha, had me laughing
