The BEST and WORST things about owning a MASERATI QUATTROPORTE | 3 Time Owners Experience

  • The Maserati Quattroporte is a stunningly tempting car on the used market, primarily because unlike its two natural rivals - the Porsche Panamera and Aston Martin Rapide - it is actually remarkably affordable, with the majority of used examples for sale in the UK coming in at well under the £20k mark - with some examples even offered at half of that amount...
    At the same time there are huge amounts of both inaccurate rhetoric and natural cautiousness surrounding ownership one of these highly specialised and very rare exotics. So with this blend of desirability and fear on full display with these stunning four door Ferrari's, I think it best to weigh in as a 3 time Quattroporte owner myself to share some of the best and worst aspects of actually owning and living with them.

    I bought mine new, a 2009 QP Executive GT. Now going into its 12year n 45k miles…it’s perfectly maintained n other than normal maintenance n oil changes it’s quite trouble free. I just changed out the squeaky suspensions n looking to change out the engine mounts soon.
    I lov my Maser-Fokker. Ferrari V8 n Ferrari tuned exhaust note. I updated the stereo with German, French, Japanese components in an Italian car so now i think i got the Axis Powers all covered.
    It drives like a smaller car being front mid-engined. Seats 5 in case some dumbass friends get drunk.
    Trade in value is abt $5…i guess i’m keeping it forever.

      Despite my drawbacks, I’ve ended up buying another one myself, but a facelift 2009 model as well with the ZF box update. A thousand times better than the 2005 one I had.

    • @stifflerantique259

      A little update n heads-up for fellow owners. The sealant O-ring in radiator fluid reservoir finally gave out n all coolant fluid all leaked. My QP is at the dealer getting a new coolant reservoir; $1,800.
      Please be mindful to replace coolant reservoir about 11years &/or 40k miles. At least duct tape all coolant reservoir connecting spots.
      I also replaced all 4 power window mechanisms.
      When my QP was waiting for tow truck, i had an hour to think about what i may want in replacement to my 2009 Maserati QP 4.7...it was a crucial 50minutes because i realize that nothing compares to a Ferrari built, front-mid-engined, natural non-turbo V8, Pininfarina designed. There is nothing else out there can replace this car. Heck, in that 50min i actually found a 2014 Maserati GranTurismo i wanna buy; it's a Ferrari Roma & i already know how to maintain it!

  • @sun_of_a_gun

    All what you have said most likely is true. My trouble with the ZF transmission is that you lose the transaxle and the dry sump. To a petrolhead that means a lot. Is there any other vehicle in the world that is a 4-door limo with a transaxle and a dry sump? I cannot name it. All the competitors are just nice, big cars with big engines... and there is truly nothing special about them, if you know what I mean. Going for a ZF box seems to me like taking a shortcut. But that is great because the cars with the DuoSelect box are even more 'affordable'. Cheers!

    • @HSGAutomotive
      @HSGAutomotive  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'd recommend checking out the Panamera. I've driven a couple of them now and eyeing one as my next motor. It's not as ''pretty'' but does everything I want a car to do.

    • @sun_of_a_gun
      @sun_of_a_gun 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@HSGAutomotive Yeah, not too bad of a recommendation. But does the Panamera have that something? I am sure it is a brilliant car.. but it seems not exotic at all. And after all, it comes from a manufacturer which is, at least to me, famous for different vehicles (like 911) and Panamera (+Cayenne) seem to be the revenue boosters.

      The best 4 door for a true petrol head is the duo select Quattroporte. They should be treated as modern classics that are NOT DAILY DRIVER CARS. It is a brilliant well engineered sports sedan to be driven manual sport setting and the clutch will last 60,000 miles+.
      I own 2005 with 60,100 miles and original clutch and had only serviced 3 times with no issues. This is only for true drivers that enjoy driving manual sports sedan. My previous car was 2001 E39 M5. All the hate chatter daily driver Quattroporte is total none sense

  • @MrTottanham
    @MrTottanham ปีที่แล้ว +4

    i am tired hearing how bad is the duo select because of the clutch and transmission, than how come mine has 102k miles on it what is like 160k km and never had any issue with the clutch or transmission? so far just oil change, transmission gear oil, spark plug, break pads and tires. You treat this car right and is bulletproof.

    My biggest worry is the cam shaft variators? I'm told by a Masi technician is to turn the car over before it starts. That gets the oil in the top end. This made sense from a logical point of view. A starter doesn't turn as many RPM as a engine does. Get it

    • @timothybowen3170
      @timothybowen3170 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      keeping the rpms higher will save ur variators as well 👍 in other words, don't grandma these cars, f136 isn't made for consistently low rpms. Theyre made to be driven like a 🏎 not a 🚗 lol

    • @timothybowen3170
      @timothybowen3170 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That may defeat the purpose of a 4-door, but this is the way the engines are made 🤷‍♂️

      Exactly, that was my first one (a DuoSelect/F1 model) the two ZF's I've had since (including one currently) are infinitely better. More reliable than my Jag or Bentley over time in fact

      @romainc268 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the clarification. I am really thinking about having the zf version. You mentioned that it’s way more reliable mainly with the zf transmission. What are the other things that are still not so reliable ? The skyhook is one of them I guess. Anything else from your experience ?

    The maintenance costs deter me.. what is the best model/year to own?

    • @HSGAutomotive
      @HSGAutomotive  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've ended up getting a second one, which I currently own. Compared to the first one it's worlds apart, so from my experience I would say avoid Cambiocorsa gearbox models at all costs (often called DuoSelect or F1) and get a ZF gearbox model which is what I have now, a 2009 facelift. That and I would avoid anything around 100k miles or more. My current one had 58k on the clock, so if you plan on getting one, get the lowest miles you can afford, with good evidence of work done/receipts/servicing. Any evidence of the car being taken good care of.
