"Wasshoi! Wasshoi! Wasshoi! Wasshoi!“ Great reaction. You just know the live performances of this will be completely wild and the crowd will go nuts! 🤘🤪🤘(That has already happened).
This is Momometal's first official music video since she was revealed as the official new member in April and she even got her own solo part with the spoken kabuki theatre section.
The song title translates as 'Metali' (or 'Metari') which is a fusion of the words metal and matsuri (festival). The song is about a Metal Village holding a metal festival, so they have included all the matsuri shouts everybody would be calling out as encouragement to the people carrying heavy floats etc like "Sore, Sore", "Dokoisho" and "Wasshoi!".
They are inviting us all to dance - I may have this a bit wrong, but there is something in the lyrics (I think in Momometal's kabuki section) about we are all idiots or fools - the idiots who watch and the idiots who dance ... so as we're all here and we're all idiots why just watch, we may as well all dance.
I had to chuckle after what you had been saying about the giant Tom Morello behind them when you said "He has always been big" ... he is even bigger in this video!

    _Wasshoi wasshoi!_
    _Wasshoi wasshoi!_
They hit 1M in less than 6 days, get ready to wasshoi at live concerts coz this song is becoming one of fans favorite super fast.
We got another banger for Japanese festival or any festival around, they performed this recently at Summer Sonic and hopefully they will do the same at Blue Ridge Rock, Aftershock or Louder Than Life and get the crowd going nuts with this.
It's their first song released with this new BM reborn and formation.
We heard it before the release because they premiere this at Apocrypha - Another One show, and someone leaked this on a fancam, it was fun and really unexpected but everyone was having a blast and even started with a Kami Band solo after a while without it.
The song title is Metali!! (metal + matsuri, which is a Japanese festival) and you can hear it in the spoken section when one of them (MomoMetal) is doing the Kabuki moves style.
Just so you know "wasshoi" is another shout used in Japanese festival when men are carrying the shrine, similar to sore and soya you can hear in Megitsune and Karate. You got it right, the traditional Japanese instrument is called shamizen, they also used it at Megitsune.
I can totally see why they pick Tom Morello on this, the groove, the catchiness, the super energetic jump and those typical 90's vibes at funk or alternative metal live concerts. Knowing something about KobaMetal it could be he send an email to Tom Morello to be part of this song, but here's some official statement:
_"I am a big fan of BABYMETAL, a band that is both power rocking and constantly surprising with dizzying musical twists and turns. I’ve been trying to work with them for some time and when they sent me the demo of METALI!! I knew I could rock that shit like crazy!"_

    Babymetal Metali (feat) Tom Morello:-
Babymetal have joined forces with Tom Morello of Rage Against The Machine for a new single ‘Metali’.
The new song is the latest in the Japanese kawaii metal band’s series of star-studded collaborations, and sees them partner with the Rage guitarist for another up-tempo, electrifying track.
The group first teased the release last week and, according to the press release, ‘Metali’ is “officially the first song by the newly reborn” group - now consisting of SU-METAL, MOAMETAL, and MOMOMETAL. It also confirms that the single was created with the vision of their crowd forming a circle pit at a metal festival this summer.
Babymetal - METALI (feat. Tom Morello)” was released as a digital Single in 2023. The Japanese Title “メタり” has a distinctive style of kana usage. It is written as the nominal form of the made up verb “to do metal”.
This song is characterized by the classic metal style of the Japanese band, combined with some j-rap touches that distinguish it from previous releases. And of course, the subject gets more frantic through the classic guitar style of Tom Morello, which fits quite well in the musical
    Lyrics Translation:-
It’s the metal-village festival metal song
    festival, festival, come together
make a ring, make a ring
    let the party horns dance1
brothers and sisters of metal-village too
    festival, festival, come together
make a ring, make a ring
    sing together
    like that, like that, heigh-ho2
you’re a fool if you dance, and a fool if you just look on, so let’s dance3
you have to dance and become a fool
like that, like that, like that, heigh-ho
you have to dance and sing
you have to sing and dance
everyone has to dance, dance dance,
    we don’t go home.
    dance, dance
dance, like that, like that, heigh-ho
    shake it, shake it
    like that, like that!
    sing, sing!
sing! like that, like that, heigh-ho!
    shout, shout!
    like that, like that
    heave-ho! heave-ho!4
    heave-ho! heave-ho!
    heave-ho! heave-ho!
    heave-ho! heave-ho!
the people asleep wake up and heigh-ho!
    heave-ho! heave-ho!
    heave-ho! heave-ho!
    heave-ho! heave-ho!
    heave-ho! heave-ho!
    everyone and anyone5 heigh-ho!
~~ you’re a fool if you dance, and a fool if you just look on, so let’s dance
but if you dance to also be a fool
    when you dance
do the metal, do the metal! ~~6
    heigh-ho
    heave-ho!
    ….
(shortened for translation, more heigh-ho and heave-ho follow until the end)
Paper horns blown into to celebrate:-
"These are shoutings used at traditional festivals. “sore” and “dokkoisho”. This is the same sore used in Megitsune.
lyrics sung during the Awa Odori festival. This is a farely long sentence translated but shorter in Japanese.
more shoutings used at traditional festivals. “wasshoi”.
the Japanese phrase used here literally translates to “the cats and bamboo lids also” which has the meaning of “everyone and anyone”
This part is spoken in a traditional way of japanese theater, called kabuki".

Thank you for always uploading BM's reaction videos. This music video was made by the same people who made the megitsune music video.
Yes, it is. 三味線(Shamisen) was used. The Shamisen is a three-line instrument. The Shamisen has been used in Japan since the 15th or 16th century. It appears to have originally come from China.
It was the same with megitsune, when a song has a lot of Japanese culture in it, it is difficult to explain. Read only if you are interested, as the content may be a little removed from the song itself.(I'm sure you have an idea of what you're getting at, but I'll write it down in a nutshell.)
It is quite impossible to translate the lyrics into English, so only the background and words are explained.
METALI is a word that adds METAL and 祭り(Matsuri=festival). And this song is a representation of a Japanese 夏祭り(Natsu Matsuri=summer festival). For us Japanese, these sound and lyrics make our Matsuri blood boil. Matsuri is the heart of the Japanese people. It is said that there are a total of 300,000 festivals in Japan, both large and small. Matsuri means a ritual for worshiping Gods or Buddha, or an event held in gratitude towards nature. 神輿(Mikoshi=portable shrine) is a carriage for Gods. In the festival, Japanese people get around the Mikoshi and carry it on their shoulders in order to worship Gods. While carrying the Mikoshi, the carriers will yell "Wasshoi, Wasshoi" or "Soiya, Soiya" or "Sore, Sore".(However, the calls vary considerably from region to region.)
神輿(Mikoshi=portable shrine) and お囃子(Ohayashi=festival music) of Matsuri have a history of more than 1,000 years and are etched in the DNA of the Japanese people.
The funny-looking masks with their mouths agape are ひょっとこ(hyottoko). It has existed for roughly 500-600 years.
The fan-shaped object held in the hand is called 扇子(Sensu). It is a tool to cool yourself by sending wind to you and can be folded into a stick shape.
Text on the Sensu is in 赤子金属, 赤子(akago) is baby, 金属(kinzoku) is metal.
ぴーひゃら(Pehyara) in the lyrics is the sound of a 篠笛(Shino bue=transverse flute) used at Matsuri.
どっこいしょ(Dokkoisho) is the voice used when lifting heavy objects. The choreography when saying "Dokkoisho" is the pose of carrying a heavy object on the shoulder.
The choreography when saying わっしょい(Wasshoi) is a pose for carrying a Mikoshi(portable shrine).
It is called 合いの手(Ainote) or 掛け声(kakegoe), a call to be inserted between songs. 合いの手(Ainote) or 掛け声(kakegoe) can be Wasshoi, Dokkoisho, Sore, Soresore, Ha, Ho, Yo, Yoisho, etc. There is nothing set in stone, and during the live performance, it is OK as long as you shout words similar to those uttered by MOA&MOMO in the atmosphere.
The lyrics "Odorin chai" and "Utain chai" are in the dialect of SU-METAL's birthplace, Hiroshima. In standard language, the words are "Odori nasai" and "Utai nasai", meaning "you should dance" and "you should sing".
SU's singing style this time incorporates traditional Japanese 民謡(minyou) and 演歌(enka).
MOMOMETAL speaks in the middle, that is 歌舞伎(kabuki) speaking. MOMOMETAL's odd pose is the Kabuki climactic pose.
The lines said by MOMOMETAL come from the 阿波おどり(Awa Odori), a traditional Japanese dance. Originally by.
    踊る阿呆に(Odoru Ahoo ni)、見る阿呆(Miru Ahoo)、同じ阿呆なら(Onaji Ahonara)踊らにゃ損損(Odoranya son son)!
(The dancers are fools, the watchers are fools. Both are fools alike so, why not dance?)
    ※踊る(odoru=dance),阿呆(ahoo=fool),見る(miru=view)
If you are interested in Mikoshi, musical performances, etc., please search youtube for these characters and watch the videos. When the Japanese see this, our blood starts to boil.

Thank you so much for this interpretation of the lyrics. It also shines light on some things we've heard in other Babymetal lyrics, such as the Sore Sore chants in Megitsune. Incredibly interesting. And, your translation skills are fantastic, BTW 🙂 🦊🦊🦊
I would only correct one wee thing. The concept of 'boiling blood' here generally means to become very angry about something, whereas I believe you may mean to say that the Japanese people become very excited in a positive way lol.
Oh, and I've been conviced for quite a while now that Japanese culture generally, and the outlook on life, is the greatest. I really appreciate the way you keep your roots very firmly planted and honour and respect traditions; and such wonderful traditions they are!
      All the best to you!

I try to write Japanese that will make sense when translated into English, and I use the translation software DeepL for English translations😅
You are right. What you have taught me is instructive. If the Japanese is translated directly into English, it becomes a literal translation and the meaning is lost. Thank you very much.
In Japan, these are used in the sense of "get excited".
      血が騒ぐ=Blood makes a fuss.
      血が踊る=Blood dances
      血が沸く=Blood boils over
There are several angry expressions, but the most used are.
      頭に血が上る=Blood goes up to head
Around 1550-1600, Japan secluded itself to prevent invasion by Spain and Portugal. From there, isolation lasted until the Meiji Restoration of 1868, when a unique Japanese culture was created. This is also known as the Galapagosisation of Japanese culture. If there had been no isolation, Japanese culture would not be what it is today.
If you like history, this area around 1550-1600 is interesting. It is interesting to see how they escaped colonisation from Spain and Portugal during the reigns of 織田信長(Oda Nobunaga), 豊臣秀吉(Toyotomi Hideyoshi) and 徳川家康(Tokugawa Ieyasu), who achieved unification of the country.
      (Sorry, this is completely unrelated.)

@@meimemeime Thanks for replying 🙂. I'll just say that I'm very glad Japan managed to maintain it's beautiful culture (and culture of beauty) to the present day. Not to mention the way that modern Japanese artists are keeping the traditional mixed with now and futuristic works. (I'm also a massive fan of Wagakki Band, BTW).
I'll look out for your future posts as I've learned so much from these. I'm an amateur student of history as well, so incorporating a history lesson has made me very happy haha.

Nice reaction. The Music video starts with a very Megitsune feel to it. With traditional aspects to it. Then they go hard and kick some of that stuff to the side. But they don't tear it all down. A very metal lets break some holes in the walls. lol. Tom a giant in metal comes in as the giant he is. Momoko got to shine in that spoken part. During the live performance Momo gets a bit of solo dance while doing it. While Su and Moa step back and let their new member standout. While there is a lot of craziness going on musically during the song. One of the things it does is bring back their kawaiiness that many missed from the Other One album. For me I knew they would never leave that behind. Moa can't, she's kawaii to the core. And her kawaii beats all. From their live performances they added more that everyone wants to witness. Another fantastic Kamiband intro. Whoooooooooooooooohhh. Wasshoi wasshoi wasshoi. Now let's dance the fool too.

Yea this track is f*** sick!! Babymetal always suprises me & this one came out of nowhere!! This should have been on the new album though which unfortunately isn't. Su-Metal really stepped up with this vocal performance as well.
Interesting to see Kubuki theatre incorporated into this as well. Which i think Momoko used to perform during her previous stage theater performances. It's a really unique take on this 17th century Japanese performance style & giving it a metal shrine here.
As far as Tom Morello he explained that he wanted to team up with the group because of their reputation to deliver intense, blistering performances.“I am a big fan of Babymetal, a band that is both power rocking and constantly surprising."
"With dizzying musical twists and turns,” he said. “I’ve been trying to work with them for some time and when they sent me the demo of ‘Metal’ I knew I could rock that shit like crazy. Props on mentioning The Samisen as well. 🎭

I think the vocals are one of the main things that divides the fandoms of the various female or female fronted Japanese bands. I love Su's vocals although honestly she can sing in so many different styles and voices it is hard to pin down what her vocal sound really is. While I respect Lovebites and Asami's skill I just don't like her vocals. The attempt to sing in English all the time just sounds like mush to me because she really can't pronounce English very well. Same with Saiki of Band Maid. Su is always precise and clear no matter what she is singing. I don't think either of those bands are bad though and respect their talent. The vocals just aren't my taste.
