    Probably one of my favorite videos… ever. ❤️👍 Please never worry about rambling. It is a joy to hear your thoughts and this video was full of helpful insights. The last few months I’ve been really drawn to a certain kind of mixed media illustration style. There are a handful of artist (including you, Katie) that I am gleaning so much inspiration from. I love the process of getting shapes and base colors down first with paint and/or markers, and then going in with pencils to add texture, details, and shadows. I’ve been experimenting and creating art… much more slowly than I’d like (because I am a massage therapist with my own business and when I’m not doing that I help my husband with his custom cabinet business), but I am determined to learn this way of creating because it brings me so much joy. Before, I would typically use a pen to create limes and then color them with watercolor, but working in almost the opposite manner feels much more freeing and enjoyable. My inner critic keeps telling me that I must obtain and use gouache to be successful at it, but I am currently not in a position to buy ANY new art supplies. However, I have MORE than enough supplies with full sets of colored pencils, watercolor pencils, Neocolor 1 & 2, tons of markers., and plenty of watercolors. So, I am not lacking in supplies whatsoever, and I need to shut my critic down by just playing, experimenting, and creating. So, even though I may not be using the exact same supplies, I can still mimic the style that I’m currently drawn to. And, even though my supplies are similar, my work will not look exactly the same yours, or the same as any of the other artists who work in a similar manner. On top of that, we all see things, perceive things, and interpret things differently which is very cool! I can tell that my skills are slowly growing and my style is gradually evolving. I think it’s so interesting that your style, Katie, is from years of being inspired by other artist and then experimenting with the process that works best for you… and then my style is evolving from you (and other artists) and then experimenting with the process that currently works best for me. We are all connected! 🤯🤗❤️

      Oh thank you so much Wendi 🧡 I'm so glad you enjoyed this video and that you found it helpful. I absolutely love hearing how much joy you're getting from creating! One of the reasons I love social media so much is because I find so many inspiring artists and can take from their work too. I also totally get what you mean about the new art supplies. I still see an artist using a new medium I haven't used before and wanting to get it because I think I'll be able to make my work better and more like them! Whereas really it's not the supplies that are the issue, I can create with what I have (and goodness knows I have enough 😂) We can still learn and experiment with what we have. We are all so unique and I love that we all see things differently - it definitely means no one style will ever be the same! Thank you so much for your lovely comment Wendi and for sharing your thoughts. So interesting and I hope you continue creating, experimenting and having fun! ❤️

    I absolutely LOVED this video Katie!! I'm a new artist (I've only been creating art since this past January) and I already am struggling to find a style. I must say though, that I feel some connection with your style. I love the mixing of mediums and kind of going into a project with ''whatever happens happens'' kind of thought. That's not to say that you don't have an idea already of what you would like to create, but you don't let the ''should'' aspect take over. You allow your instincts to lead - so you might grab a pencil, a marker, paint or whatever to represent whatever it is you're trying to create. I have been drawing everyday - even. the days where like you said, I only have 10 minutes. When I'm out somewhere waiting, I pop out my sketchbook and sketch something right then and there. I just feel like I've fallen in love because drawing and sketching and wanting to improve has taken over. I was enrolled in my very first art class but it got cancelled because there weren't enough students enrolled. So i decided to look on Skillshare. I'm hoping to find a course there and then in then in January try to enroll in an in class course. I really need to learn some basic skills I think...I dunno..lol.🙂THank you so much for all your videos. I'm watching them as I paint 🙂

      So glad you are enjoying the videos and finding them helpful! I think at the beginning we really can be so focused on finding a style, but creating and experimenting is doing just that! It really does help to find what works for us and for it to continually evolve over time. You're right - I'm definitely very instinctual with my work and I don't like rules, so I just do what works for me 😅 The fact that you're drawing every day is amazing!! That commitment and the fact you're enjoying it will make such a difference and you'll be a confident artist in no time 💖 I hope that the in person art class will happen soon but what you're doing already sounds perfect!

    Super beautiful painting! And your stile is very inspiring and gorgeous! I still searching my stile. In my soul I so much love multimedia and wanna draw with gouache, but in the otherside I am an watercolor artist who draw everything from life + urban sketching. I bought Caran D'ache gouache as these paints are not opaque, but so scared to touch them. Your videos are so cosy so I am happy to be on this side of TH-cam

      Aah thank you! I think finding a style is always going to be ongoing - I think it should evolve and change as we grow as artists 🥰 I like so many different materials so I think my style differs a bit depending on what I use, but I think the colours I use contribute to my style! Oh I hope you're able to use the gouache soon, they are so fun! Maybe try swatching first and it will feel less scary 💛

    I really enjoyed this - so many great insights. I’m currently binging your channel as I just discovered it and I really appreciate how open you are about the lessons learned. I’ve mostly dabbled in watercolor, but between you and a couple other artists, I’m now slightly obsessed with mixed media! 😂

      @@KatieMoody I believe it! I started a whole list of items I’d like to add to my supplies! Trying to be intentional about it though, and not too impulsive. 😂

    Lovely video Katie (I am just catching up so a bit late with the comment) I don't think i have ever worried about finding a style or sticking to one style, I don't know if that makes me lucky or dumb haha. But I agree, that it just takes time and a lot of drawing, I have copied peoples work before though in my sketchbooks, especially when I want to learn a new subject like drawing people for example. i find it really helpful to study things like that and I guess a little of of all the artists I love have gone into my style over the years. Oh! like with art materials, I started using paint pens bcause of a domestika course (neocolors too) and now I guess they are part of my (current) style?

      I'm just catching up with comments April! That's so interesting! I think it's a good thing because it means you can do your own thing and not worry about the end result. I think copying and practise is so important and studies can teach us so much (really must do it more!). I use so much more mixed media now than I ever did and I can't imagine my style without them. I love that new art materials have come in to yours too - I wonder what our styles will be like in another year from now!

    I really enjoyed this video.
    You reinforced what I have been doing in my art journey.
    I have been using the same sketch book as you...... and have filled 2 since the beginning of the year 2023!
    Deciding to do the 100 day challenge was the best thing I could have ever done....drawing and painting every day. I'm now almost done with 200 drawings....and will continue.
    Thank you again for your insights!

    This was a really great video. I've struggled with feeling stifled by 'style' or my lack thereof in my eyes. It's put me off creating for some time. I've always felt I need to CHOOSE one and this made me realise that actually it's something that can simply be FOUND through continuing to make art. Thank you! I love your little landscapes, beautiful work.

      Oh that's so wonderful to hear you enjoyed it, thank you Rebecca! It's always something we strive for and yet such a limiting belief until we 'get' there! And then ironically it's like we didn't need to get the style in the first place, but as you say, we just find it and the freedom that comes with it along the way. Thank you so much for sharing 🧡

    Lovely work, as always 😁. I love hearing people's thoughts on style. I feel like I'm finding mine quite quickly perhaps because I don't actually worry about it. But I do think a big part of it has been finding the materials and processes that work for me and suit my personality, not just what the finished look is. I like coloured pencils because they force my brain to slow down a bit and have a rest from all the thinking it does (not many things can do that 🙄) and I like watercolour pencils instead of pans/liquids because I can't really deal with the mess and unpredictability from normal paint 😅.
    I also have very set stages in my process - I ink the outlines then wait a day for it to fully dry before I add the watercolour pencil base, then I have a break before starting on the coloured pencil layers - it's all very methodical which absolutely reflects my personality and mindset. I love doing things in series or projects too which I guess could be part of my style too. I'm not a robot, I just like to do things in a certain repetitive way 😂.

      Thanks so much Emma 😊 Your style is so distinct and suits your work so well! I love that you are meticulous and methodical with it, it all feels so considered and beautifully done. I really love hearing that it forces you to rest and that it's mindful! I find that painting and drawing is one of the things I can really zone out with too and I love that I don't have room for any other thoughts apart from the art in hand 😂 Your style is wonderful and I look forward to seeing what you create next! ❤️

    I have so many mediums and subjects that I paint and draw, I used to think my art was so eclectic that I didn't have a style, but as I've produced more and more work, I have begun to see a style emerge...still couldn't explain it though...someone said it was whimsical but I can't really see that myself.

    • @KatieMoody
      @KatieMoody  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oooh yes this is exactly it Gillian! And I definitely think that my daily art challenge and creating so much has made me see the style emerge. It's so hard to put a style into words isn't it! I did a question box for my followers on Instagram once that asked people to describe my style and I got such interesting responses! You could try it and see if any resonate 😊

  • @fuzzydragons
    @fuzzydragons 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I dont have a style, I draw way too many things to have one set style. some artists have one style, some have many styles but those styles did come from practice, lots of practice. and a person's style is always changing as they create, even if they go back to the style that makes them money lol 😀

    • @KatieMoody
      @KatieMoody  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's so true! And I don't think it's a bad thing at all to have many styles, in fact I think that makes us better artists! I feel like we learn more when we try new ways of doing things - like you say, it's always changing as we create anyway! The money part of one style is just a bonus 😂

    • @fuzzydragons
      @fuzzydragons 2 ปีที่แล้ว
