  • If you love tea a little more than you love coffee and the stress of brewing it is a little too much in the morning, you may dig this programmable tea maker. Watch Gail give us a run through of its features, functionality and brew up a pot.

    I love mine. I’ve had it seven years and it still works great. Pricey, but well worth it.

    I watch this video repeatedly, not only is sweet, it's demonstrated beautifully!

    @atsharrock It actually takes less time than is recommended for a standard kettle brewing method for each of these teas. For example, the tea we used (a black tea) said to steep for 4 minutes, but the settings for black tea on this were just 3 minutes for 'strong'. I suspect it's because of the flat line brew temp -- you can brew it for less time because the temperature is not slowly decreasing (as it would once poured out from the kettle & into your mug). - Kat

  • @SeattleCoffeeGear
    @SeattleCoffeeGear  13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @VickyTrace737 Yes, hand wash only. It goes all the way to the bottom (the basket) so the water level and how much it covers depends on how much water you put in to begin with. - Kat

  • @SeattleCoffeeGear
    @SeattleCoffeeGear  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yes - it needs to be in place for the contraption to register that it can start brewing / timing, etc. - Kat

  • @SeattleCoffeeGear
    @SeattleCoffeeGear  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think, like with anything, it's personal taste. We see it in the coffee world all the time and the tea world is definitely getting into it as well these days -- recommendations on ideal brew temps and times for the best cup. But, similarly, plenty of folks also like to just approximate and they love how they make their tea, and we're cool with that :) - Kat

  • @SeattleCoffeeGear
    @SeattleCoffeeGear  14 ปีที่แล้ว

    @antonc81 Yeah; and the type of tea will be a big component of that, as well. I wouldn't have taken this one much longer, personally, because it would have started to get more bitter. But you can set the temp & brew time for whatever you like, not just their recommended settings. - Kat

  • @SeattleCoffeeGear
    @SeattleCoffeeGear  13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @proustie I am not sure; we didn't do a side by side. If anything, it provides you with a level of accuracy that you don't have with traditional steeping methods without putting a lot of effort into it, so that could be a benefit. It is likely you can achieve similar brews with both methods, just different levels of participation on your part :) - Kat

  • @eugenen22
    @eugenen22 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    i've had this unit for almost two years and its great for more delicate teas. you guys should consider some blind tea tests to demonstrate the difference in brewing at the proper temperature vs. just off a boil

  • @SeattleCoffeeGear
    @SeattleCoffeeGear  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Interesting ... we just did a temperature comparison ... I'll put this on the list, too, to see if we can notice a flavor difference. thanks for the suggestion! - kat

  • @SeattleCoffeeGear
    @SeattleCoffeeGear  13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @boron47 I suppose, yes; I usually drink a couple of mugs so it works for me, but you do need to fill it to a minimum for steeping. - Kat

  • @SeattleCoffeeGear
    @SeattleCoffeeGear  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    That's a great suggestion! I'll add it to the list. Thanks for sharing your feedback. - Kat

  • @SeattleCoffeeGear
    @SeattleCoffeeGear  14 ปีที่แล้ว

    @Malangsufi Yeah, it's $249 on sale right now; I love it but I am not too sure that it is worth that price. Think it should be under $200, but since they have flown off the shelves and Breville has has problems keeping them in stock, guess I'm the only one who thinks that ;) - Kat

  • @SeattleCoffeeGear
    @SeattleCoffeeGear  14 ปีที่แล้ว

    @MrGone2k Totally! I was thinking press, pour over or Aeropress would benefit from the temp control. - Kat

  • @SeattleCoffeeGear
    @SeattleCoffeeGear  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yes, you can make smaller amounts based on how much tea and water you put in there ...but I think you're going to be minimum a couple of cups. - Kat

    @shrumpkin Honestly, I'm not sure. I know that BPA is about keeping clear plastics clear and I don't know if we'll suddenly discover that there are nasty elements in these opaque plastics. Only time will tell, I guess; unfortunately, manufacturing has gone largely the way of plastics so it's difficult to find anything that doesn't have it as a component. - Kat

  • @SeattleCoffeeGear
    @SeattleCoffeeGear  14 ปีที่แล้ว

    @jdharding2 I tried it with coffee and it didn't work well -- I had to use a coarser than french press grind because of the size of the filter holes and it needed to steep a lot longer than I original set it for. Could mess around with a bit, I guess, and put a paper filter in there or something...but on its own, it was not coffee friendly :) - Kat

  • @tgshark1

    Well darn. Someone should tell Breville to make the same kettle for coffee brewing then. Haha.
    Although....a fine mesh filter basket of the right size could probably fit on that tea basket of theirs. Oh the joys of McGyvering. :))

  • @antonc81
    @antonc81 14 ปีที่แล้ว

    i like my tea a lot darker than that.. but I guess there'd be nothing to stop you putting in a custom setting with a longer brew time.

  • @proustie
    @proustie 13 ปีที่แล้ว

    Looks fun but the important question--for me at least--is whether the tea tastes better than it otherwise would.

  • @SeattleCoffeeGear
    @SeattleCoffeeGear  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think so, yes, that you can use it without brewing tea. - Kat

  • @SeattleCoffeeGear
    @SeattleCoffeeGear  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    I tried this out, actually, and it didn't work well. You have to grind the coffee fairly coarsely because the filter basket's holes are much bigger than you'd use for coffee. Then, no matter how much time I let it steep, etc., it just came out like a coffee-tea -- very watery and no flavor. I agree it would be an awesome approach to brewing! But alas, it did not work well :( - Kat

    perhaps a robo tamper for gail? LMAO

    I don't like to speak in generalities, but being an American, I don't have the impression that people drink milk with their tea all that often here. I 'think' Americans drink more strong coffee than coffee with cream or sugar as their primary hot caffeinated beverage, and when switching to tea I think they like it stronger and more bitter as well. And thus, no milk. This isn't to say there isn't any variation for coffee drinkers, but I, at least, don't get fancy with my coffee.

  • @SeattleCoffeeGear
    @SeattleCoffeeGear  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    I guess to each their own -- I don't drink milk at all so can't really cosign your opinion ;) - Kat

    Do you need to have the basket installed for it to work? because if not, I would probably just use whatever grind size I want and pour them straight into the pot for brewing. After that, I'll just filter out the grounds either by pouring into an aeropress or any coffee filter basket (or even a french press).

    We would to see you compare a light green ..say a Japanese green using the tea maker vs the old fashion way hot water & pot .
    I Have one of these tea makers and we always notice a "chemical taste" to our tea ,, particularly the more delicate varieties ie green , white and most good oolongs.
    We also tried chlorinated water from the tap as well as filtered water ,,, filtered water appeared to make some difference , but we could still easily taste the " chemical"

    • @SeattleCoffeeGear
      @SeattleCoffeeGear  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Bob! The One-Touch is pretty intuitive as far as cleaning goes! The jug lid, tea basket, tea basket lid, and tea scoop are dishwasher safe, but can also be cleaned with soapy water and a soft sponge. The jug should be wiped and rinsed after every use, though Breville doesn't recommend using soap as the tea deposits will enhance the flavor of brewed tea.

    Have you or anyone reading this experienced that the plastic holds odors? I'm concerned that brewing say a black or robust tea will effect the taste of other lighter teas. And lastly has anyone used fresh herbs in this tea maker?

    • @SeattleCoffeeGear
      @SeattleCoffeeGear  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      We have not heard any complaints about the plastic. Have you seen those complaints online? I also have not heard of anybody using the teamaker for fresh herbs. - Steven

    • @Amanivajra
      @Amanivajra 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Seattle Coffee Gear I've not seen too much regarding odor online. However, I did got to BB&B the other day and by happenstance saw they were selling cleaning tablets next to the unit. I would love to make some fresh herbal teas (as opposed to teabags) from herbs from my garden. I've had this unit for over a year and have been using it as a really expensive water kettle due to odor concerns.

      Seattle Coffee Gear Kat,
      I've got a favor to ask, pretty please? It just might help restore my sanity. I got the One-Touch over the weekend, but when I make 500ML (about ~ 16 ozs)... it seems like it is weak. At least weaker than when I was using the Crusinart Perfect Temp Kettle and a french press or Perfect Tea style maker. Everything seems equal, except... just maybe... the surface area of the tea exposed to water in each method.
      Can you help me figure things out, by doing a blind taste with the two methods? I just know Gail, AKA the "super taster", can help settle this.

    • @SeattleCoffeeGear
      @SeattleCoffeeGear  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      elpmonkey Have you checked out our comparison of the two methods? We actually did something quite similar and the tastes were very different. I suspect it's both surface area and also temperature differences … you will likely have to tweak your Breville a bit to soup it up. - Kat
