In 1976, I was managing a Radio Shack store and the cost of the newly released TRS 80 computer had to be ordered. It was retailing at $3000 as I recall. And it took ten minutes to boot up and had all of 64K of memory. Comparatively, my neighbor bought a brand new Pontiac GTO in 1964 for $2495...just indicates how relative it all is.
That's $12,000 in today's money. We earned less in 1978 too, and we'd just gone through crazy high inflation in the mid-70s, so that $4,000 was a stretch compared to five years before. And the cars were less safe and used ton of gas.
James Garner used to do those cocky beef commercials that insulted vegetables until he had quintuple bypass surgery. Then the beef industry dropped him like a (heh heh) hot potato.
The people treated each other better as well . Don’t believe the bullshit you learn from radicalized teachers . People had more dignity back then . Polite, well dressed … now everyone looks like they are wearing their goddamn pajamas . Sweat Pants ?
I lived in the Cleveland area up until 1983 when I moved to Texas. Back in the 1950's and 60's, the station in this video was known as WJW TV. I'm not sure when they added the K. At the time, we could only get 3 TV stations, channels 3, 5, and 8. Sometimes channel 2 Pittsburg, if conditions were right. In theory, we could get UHF Youngstown channel 33, but the tube in our TV tuner kept burning out. A new tube cost $6 and my dad wouldn't spend the money. That would be like $45 today
and a quick technical note: looks like TV8 at this point got rid of their Norelco PC 60/70 studio cameras and they were replaced with Hitachi SK 70s I think...
This is fascinating to me! I was born July 16th 1996! As for the man that left his mom at 90 in the car: hopefully he got her back safely! Stupid , moronic move on his part! Mom would be 136 today!,
Damn lawson's i can remember when me and my brother would walk there for snacks and pop we thought we was getting older couse we were allowed to walk there
Kathy Adams was also at WJBK in Detroit when that station was CBS affiliate... As for Fred Mc Cloud?...He also worked in Detroit as the sport anchor for WDIV the NBC affiliate.
The newscasters on this broadcast were normal weight and had a healthy skin complexion. Many people on newscasts today look overweight, bloated, and husky.
double hitters....boy those were the days used to be a vendor at the old stadium love those Twilight doubleheaders.....omg....Willie Horton.....that was my dude
Yeah, nothing like dealing with the boat people, Watergate, runaway inflation, gas rationing, Patty Hearst and Iran Hostage Crisis just around the corner for that Olde Tyme Good Feeling of "simpler" days. The 1970's were some damned wicked times to live through.
As for this whole news show, they got rid of that "MacArthur Park" theme big time. And also it replaced "City Camera News" with "Newscenter 8" with a different theme, and no "MacArthur Park". I would use this for my home video logo.
@RichHartley19671 I forgot that was on here too! I uploaded another copy of that commercial separately with fuzzy UHF reception- picture here is much better.
Would anyone know which cameras were being used in the studio by WJKW at this point, as seen on the "NewsCenter8" open? (It does appear at this juncture that they'd replaced their Norelco PC-70's.)
@eyeh8nbc At that time, stations weren't mandated to carry all network programming. Even WEWS Channel 5 preempted the Saturday or Sunday ABC newscast - up until the mid-90s - to air the locally-produced "Academic Challenge."
@dgendvil I don't know- there's hardly anything on the tapes I've gotten that even says they were a CBS affiliate- almost thought they were an independent station! (Of course they became a Fox station later.)
That is Casey Kasem v/o the Century 21 ad, plus it sounds like Randy Newman singing the Pabst Beer ad, also that's former WJW/WJKW TV-8 Personality Mike Keen hosting the local TV show called, "Public Square" and the announcer for the show was the late Joe Grant, it's also nice to see the late Ted Knight in the Southgate USA ad, plus I believe the TV-8 announcer on duty that night was former fill in announcer Dean Griffin.
He did! I looked in the PD archives because that was such a terrible situation and wanted to see what happened. She was found asleep in the car several hours later. The car was parked about a mile and a half away. It said police were investigating what happened but that she was ok. No follow up article.
Great 😃👍 Memories from 45 Years ago.
And just a few days later nearby I got my first glimpse of this crazy a** world
I think these snapshots in time must be valuable to anyone trying to understand how people viewed the world in their time.
Brand new car for $4,000.00 WTH have we done to ourselves???
Yeah, but the VCR used to record this probably cost close to $1000 at the time!

When newscasters just reported...well...(drum roll)...the news! 😂
James Garner in the Polaroid ads... memories.
RIP, Jim.
Jason Jones Amen.
James Garner used to do those cocky beef commercials that insulted vegetables until he had quintuple bypass surgery. Then the beef industry dropped him like a (heh heh) hot potato.
I was a kid living in Cleveland Heights back then. Good times.
Interesting facts, especially back in the 70's. You need to invite friends to the website including a few friends of mine who used to live here.
wow the 70's looked cool! the people dressed neat and were much calm and healthier, and the hair styles were great as well.
People seemed mellow and less neurotic. TV news shows didn't look like a flashy frantic video game back then. Just the news.
The people treated each other better as well . Don’t believe the bullshit you learn from radicalized teachers . People had more dignity back then . Polite, well dressed … now everyone looks like they are wearing their goddamn pajamas . Sweat Pants ?
The best days of my life -
What we live in now is like a plastic version of life .

Thank you! 1978 was the last year I lived in my hometown of Cleveland.
Those indians highlights are GOLD!
It's amazing how they used to show the accident victims so close up like that
George boy I guess!!
Yes. I agree, I just love it old news footage.
The backend of this video is what stands out to me. I'm impressed by how bright/articulate the audience is in terms of asking questions.
I had a MAJOR crush on Kathy Adams back then. WJKW had the hotties back then.
Speaking for myself they got the hotties now
@@Eric-e8q1w I'm in Pennsylvania now and they are beauties!
holy crap, LAWSONS
and a quick technical note: looks like TV8 at this point got rid of their Norelco PC 60/70 studio cameras and they were replaced with Hitachi SK 70s I think...
June 7, 1978 was exactly 4 years before I was born. Very cool.
I miss the REAL NEWS .
ziggy for kenney kings - nothing more 1970s cleveland than that!
This is fascinating to me! I was born July 16th 1996! As for the man that left his mom at 90 in the car: hopefully he got her back safely! Stupid , moronic move on his part! Mom would be 136 today!,
Look at how simple life was back then .....sigh
Exactly four weeks before my folks and I moved out of New York(Brooklyn) and moved to Louisiana.
I want to know what happened to Amelia Kleckner!
R.I.P. Fred McLeod ='(
Damn lawson's i can remember when me and my brother would walk there for snacks and pop we thought we was getting older couse we were allowed to walk there
Wow, I've never seen so many technical discrepancies in one program. Nice Hitachi Sk 70's in one piece configuration.
The USS Cod!😃 Remember Captain Franks on the 9th street pier?
The Public Square episode was a nice surprise. Thanks
thanks for posting this. great to show my kids what life was like when i was 8. ha ha!!
5:00 does that road sign say New York City ? on I-480
I need SnoBol to clean the shit stains off the toilet.
Love this! Thank you!! Even enjoy the commercials...lol!
the commercials are the best part!!
Kathy Adams was also at WJBK in Detroit when that station was CBS affiliate... As for Fred Mc Cloud?...He also worked in Detroit as the sport anchor for WDIV the NBC affiliate.
Mike Ries She's a beauty I wonder what's she doing nowadays
I always remember Free McLeod and Mattie Majors worked together and looked like they couldn't stand each other
The newscasters on this broadcast were normal weight and had a healthy skin complexion. Many people on newscasts today look overweight, bloated, and husky.
I love the theme for Public Square! It makes me want to dance around the room...
Goodness gracious, the host of Public Square is Mike Keen. Keen ended up being the anchor at WHO-TV and then WOI-TV, both in Des Moines, IA.
Screwing in your car at the Memphis Drive-In... Anybody?
double hitters....boy those were the days used to be a vendor at the old stadium love those Twilight doubleheaders.....omg....Willie Horton.....that was my dude
no more DH s......current basball sucks...and it is horrible these tiny 30 sec clips are all we have left of MLB in the 70s
@SandoTrini It's all relative. Back then we we're saying the same thing about the previous era.
Gotta love the hair
Yeah, nothing like dealing with the boat people, Watergate, runaway inflation, gas rationing, Patty Hearst and Iran Hostage Crisis just around the corner for that Olde Tyme Good Feeling of "simpler" days. The 1970's were some damned wicked times to live through.
Day before my 5th Bday!
Look where the weasel is now .
Wow.._. Look at how young Fred McLeod is!!! Wonder where Austin Carr was?
As for this whole news show, they got rid of that "MacArthur Park" theme big time. And also it replaced "City Camera News" with "Newscenter 8" with a different theme, and no "MacArthur Park". I would use this for my home video logo.
How come they didn't have the CBS Weekend News after NewsCenter 8 at the time?
May 27, 1978 was a Saturday. Local programming was probably on the schedule for the weekend.
@RichHartley19671 I forgot that was on here too! I uploaded another copy of that commercial separately with fuzzy UHF reception- picture here is much better.
remember Lawson mother use to by us butter pecan ice cream from there all the time back then. 70's much better
RIP Fred McLeod
awesome!!!!
I wonder how old that black lady news caster is now she look good, she probably old now lol
I fucked her
@@scotthildebrand991 🤣🤣🤣
Looks like very little has changed since 1978.

Cmon Kathy Adams!

Southgate USA..._I live walking distance from there now. Back then it might as well have been on the moon.

Dennis Kucinich? Interesting.
The PUBLIC SQUARE show theme was used by WKBW here in Buffalo in 1980 for their AM BUFFALO show.
June 7,1978 was my 2nd birthday!
That's James Garner of "The Rockford Files" in the Polaroid ad.
The NewsCenter8 theme reminds me of NewsCenter6 in New Orleans(WDSU).
It was the same theme I remember it it proved to me that Cleveland was a great city to like N Orleans
I wish the Shell Answer Man would tell me what the heck my life's purpose is!
OMG that poor guy (kleckner), did he ever find his mother? How horrible!!
He did! I looked in the PD archives because that was such a terrible situation and wanted to see what happened. She was found asleep in the car several hours later. The car was parked about a mile and a half away. It said police were investigating what happened but that she was ok. No follow up article.
Think about it - she was born in 1888.
@@Tracymmo Thank you for researching! I was worried about the mother as well.
