Sophie, it must be said again and again to you: You are a wise, sophisticated and high achieving woman. You taught yourself to knit beautifully. You are definitely a woman to be admired.
I agree. I really wanted to buy frivole for my mother since I can finally afford it. But after watching this and reading about the constant maintenance it requires, it does not feel worth it anymore.
I have no pity for the luxury houses. Greedy AF. I can easily afford luxury, but even so, I wouldn't buy real with the 50% price hikes in the last couple years. *suluxs*
Sophie you’re smart. This is exactly how I feel about high end jewellery. A Cartier love bracelet retails for approx £5k, but from a jeweller you can buy the same weight and carat of gold, just NOT designed for 2K! Whenever we go to dubai or saudi we buy lots of 18ct and 21ct gold there
My sister began her career as a jeweler for Tiffany and behind the scenes it is not elegant... they often hire jewelers fresh out of college so not necessarily the best and they are so 'mass marketed' it's like an assembly line in a dirty factory, the big name ones all do this! She now has her own jewelry business and on the side makes items for another small fine jeweler's shop that hires only experienced jewelers, and they are treated much better. Yes, the designers for the big box names may be 'famous' but they just come up with the concepts, the actual jewelry is created and assembled by lower level jewelers than most small and mid jewelry shops. So not only do the small shops have better prices and same to better quality, they also have better jewelers and better conditions for their jewelers (and they can obviously recreate the 'famous' designs if that's what you really want).
@@ninaxu541 of course! Those are much simpler then their high jewelry line or their Superbowl rings for example, which my sister worked on. You are paying for a Tiffany box and a freshly graduated series of jewelers to assemble your ring among hundreds of others per day. Way better use of money to select a small independent jeweler, perhaps a master craftsman, to design and create your ring, usually at a much better price 🥂
What’s more painful for me is watching people buying costume Jewellry from fashion houses such as Chanel..Dior.. etc.. that I can’t deal with.. I’d prefer to not do that and pay an amount to buy VCA.
My difficulty with these incredibly popular pieces is they just don't feel unique. I see Jewellery as something deeply personal and special. All my jewellery contains stones I've chosen. I know their provenance, most of the settings have been designed by me or my husband. That said, if you love them, and they are special to you awesome!!
definitely agree with you omg...these are SOOOOO not unique. Bags and shoes I understand as they are required to be produced at a mass production level. But jewelry can be individually made and can have so much character!
I agree. I fell in love with the whole premise behind the love bracelet many years ago but now every single person on Instagram seems to wear it and that takes everything away from a piece that's supposed to feel special and tell a story.
I find that a lot of these popular luxury items have been so oversaturated that they are common now. And I know at least for myself that I don't want to be considered common or basic.
@@cynthiag1557 As i sit here with literally every jewelry brand that has been mentioned. I love my things but i have to agree with a lot of what you have just said!
Thank you to Emre Can Ayaydin for requesting this video! Edit: In terms of diamonds, I only have my engagement ring and a pair earrings - I sound in this video like I’m dripping in them, I’m not! hahaha!xx
As a former jeweller in Italy I know all too well the feeling of "oh, but it's not Pomellato".. There are some AMAZING artists out there...who could make the same Jewellery piece with better quality stones...but people (at least over here) only want the brand.
Can anyone share some some high quality brands that aren’t mainstream - looking for Valentine’s Day present ideas for my husband and I refuse to buy from the above mentioned brands
@@Nancy-tr1qp Depends on your taste and your husband's taste. I like Miansai for sleek minimal things, Lazaro Soho has interesting things, John Hardy, Konstantino... Or if there's an Indian community near you, see about having a goldsmith make something specific for him.
This is a refreshing video. Personally I would much rather have a jewelry piece that is at least somewhat unique to me rather than the “status” bracelet desired and worn by so many. I also treasure jewellery pieces handed down through the family regardless of actual value.
I appreciate how much thought you put into your purchases. It feels like you really recognize that luxury is a luxury and I really respect how you go about things. Thank you for your input on all this!
I’m curious how she still feels about her Maria Tash diamond earrings. You are paying more for the brand name vs. weight and carats for what you get for the price.,
Sophie, you are SO refreshing! I feel like TH-cam is FULL of Hermes, VCA, and JUC rings (which to each their own) but I love that you have your own perspective and preferences 💜
I don't like to buy "designer" jewelry pieces because they feel so impersonal. I'm not a collector, so I only buy jewelry for sentimental reasons. It's not that the design is something that everyone has, it's that the design is so tied into a brand, not a personal aesthetic.
When you talked about seeing luxury everywhere online making it not feel exclusive and special anymore to want to own, it also has the opposite effect of making people feel like everyone has it so it should be attainable for everyone. When a Chanel bag or Hermès is not attainable for the majority of people, ever, even with saving. I try to look around at the people in my life and note how truly, no one really has a Chanel/luxury bag and most don’t care and are happy to simply carry practical bags that fit their style and life.
Right on, Soph. I used to have a friend who worked at Cartier. The funny thing is Cartier and these brands have a proper high jewellery section with genuine unique pieces that go for as much as seven figures. So the Love bracelet or the Alhambra to them are just play money. Meanwhile the mass affluent crowd (us) oogle over them like they're genuinely valuable. They aren't that valuable. The brands know that, we should know that too.
Have you actually owned any VCA or Cartier pieces? The resale value for the Alhambra and Love pieces are almost the same as market price. Most of the "mass affluent crowd" probably wouldn't buy their highest priced items...it's the mid range pieces that sell the most and fetch proper good prices in the pre loved market. I know because I've been buying and selling these items for the past few years.
I have watched a video by i don't remember who but they said that this love bracelet scratches so easily and wears of.Something like that. Plus every tacky and no so tacky handbag youtuber\ instagram influencers owns it.I own local silver jewelry from small shops that was less than 100 euros. The pieces i own are unique and haven't worn off even though i am not careful with them because they are so cheap.
Actually in business terms, those jewelry houses probably make the make the most money on pieces like the Love bracelet or Alhambra collection because they move much higher volumes of these items than the pieces from their high jewelry collections, despite the lower price point. So those wouldn't be "play money" to them, more likely their bread and butter. It's the same business model couture houses use were their couture lines and shows bring them attention and prestige, but their ready to wear lines, small leather goods, perfumes etc are actually their most profitable categories.
social media has ruined the chanel flap bags for me. I'm used to seeing it everywhere, on every woman, lots of fakes....its every single bloggers trend bag and I'm so so so very sick of it. The one thing I knew when I started my collection is that I do not gravitate towards chanel at all....Although I do see the beauty in it, but I don't think I'll ever own one.
I do get attracted to these brands because of social media, however I still prefer jewellery from independent local jewellers because as you said the quality and price is significantly better
I think a point that's missed is that just like classic handbags, luxury jewelry pieces also retain and grow in resale. So they too can be bought as investment pieces and naturally have better longevity and need less care than handbags. Plus at the end of the day they are still precious metals, so even if all else fails, they will always have value. I would pick luxury jewellery over a luxury handbag any day.
Bvlgari is a great luxury jewelry brand that is underrated, but their pieces are stunning. I've also seen all of the luxury pieces for great buys from resellers.
Bvlgari is not underrated it's just not advertised on social media from lots of influencers. Rich people know about Bvlgari and buy Bvlgari but many people don't even know what is it. Old money is whispering
Vogue Paris is why I wanted a Cartier Love bracelet - it's always featured in their editorials and looks amazing IMO. Also, there's a Vogue Paris cover with Princess Caroline of Monaco (March 1979) wearing the Love bracelet - I go back to this cover often for inspiration - it's one of my all time favorites!
I have a trinity ring from Cartier and I love it since it’s classic, understated and has not been very popular with influencers. I would not consider the Love or Juste un clou collections for the same reasons as you. xoxo
Same- I love my Trinity ring and don’t see it everywhere. I like the earrings too but don’t have them yet. I would never get the Love bracelet- just too obvious and a bit pedestrian.
Just looked up the Cartier Trinity ring as I was not familiar. Oh, yessss. It's indeed beautiful. More beautiful than the Love or Juste un Clou. This is a much better choice. I am saving for a Cartier Tank Watch. Glad I don't see those everywhere.
I own both the love bracelet and the just un clou and also the just un clou ring. I also own a vintage Tank watch. I absolutely adore all these pieces and wear them everyday. The trick to buying and appreciating these things is to connect them to a sentimental moment like a birthday, push present or job promotion. I would buy all of them again! Also they become more precious the longer you wear them as they have been through more memories with you.
So fascinating to hear your perspective on all of this! About 6 months ago I got my dream job with a major luxury jewelry house (in part thanks to you and all of your career videos!). It’s so fascinating to get a look behind the curtain to see how these brands work! I love these types of videos, please keep them coming!
I use to feel less than because I wasn't able to purchase a Chanel, Dior, LV handbag every month. When I saved up enough money to purchase my one and only Chanel handbag the Coco handle in blackout/small. I was so happy and over the moon. Now I realize its not about what I have or can buy it is about happiness. Those handbags, jewelry, designer shoes are material. It's is what's on the inside that matters
It is a good mindset to look value for money items but your £1500 DIOR hoodie is at the opposite of your demonstration. PS: you always pay for the brand.
It’s interesting what brands people enjoy, isn’t it? I don’t see a lot of Chanel as worth it. But I do love Cartier. Yes, a few of the styles, like the Love, are instantly recognizable. But a lot aren’t. I even love the patina (the scratches) that develop over time as a piece becomes part of your everyday. A handbag I carry for a few hours, my Cartier I never take off. ❤️
I bought the large juste un clou in rose gold with the diamonds in Zurich and I absolutely love it, no regrets. I was aware I was paying a premium for the prestige and brand not for the weight of gold and carats. The love bracelet is nice to have but not as beloved as my juste un clou. I got the love bracelet in white gold and diamonds Just elevates the look. I’ve purchased fine jewelry cheaper from reputable jewelers with higher carat weight than Cartier, but I’m okay with that. I did quite a bit of research before hand. If you’re concerned with scratches, buy it in white gold, it doesn’t show up as much. Not sure if I’ll ever buy VCA Alhambra. I’d rather get the Blvgari serpenti next.
Your set sounds beautiful! I didn't know that the white gold version didn't scratch. I think perhaps the gold is what seems most popular and reviewed on social media, so that's what I've seen. Hugs to you and have a great week Sandra! xx
Instead of buying an engagement ring at Tiffany’s, I made my now-husband buy an even larger diamond of the same C/C/C quality at a jeweller’s and had him set the ring and design the band in a way I liked (lots of instructions for my poor then-boyfriend😁). He did an amazing job and the ring was still quite a bit cheaper than the Tiffany’s one. The main difference is the box it came in and that there’s no logo engraved inside. Two things I really don’t care about. On top of that, I now feel the ring was much more personal because my husband didn’t just go to a store and bought it, but had gone to the jeweller’s several times to get it exactly right.
Yep, I'm not into the " overexposed everyone has" pieces. I like vintage jewelry or items that are off the radar. I have a camellia flower pendant necklace from Chanel that I purchased in the early 2000's. I adore it and it's still in perfect condition. Other than my wedding rings, the ring I wear everyday and get the most compliments on is a turquoise and diamond ring my dad bought my mum in Greece in the 80's. She gave it to me. They both have passed so it's very special.
Great video! Actually, social media has shown me many pieces that I thought I wanted but realized that I didn’t. So it’s been helpful to weed out impulse buys and jumping on trends that I would’ve regretted. This is for handbags and jewelry. I’m with you on not overpaying for a name when I can get excellent quality jewelry somewhere else. Plus there’s so many dupes of Cartier that look great without the name. If I wanted the look I’d buy that version (not fake replica but a quality piece that is similar and reflects the real value of the item). I love watching luxury TH-cam videos because they’re helpful 🤩
Whole heartedly agree with you Sophie!I think there are some cute fine jewelry pieces from fashion houses and some other major jewelry houses, but I feel like the pieces from VCA and Cartier are almost like a uniform. I totally respect if people love them for their own style, but you can always find something that resonates with you and is likely at a lower price point for just as good if not higher quality. One could argue the same for any other items we might love, such as shoes or bags etc. But jewelry is extra special in my opinion as it can be handed down for generations easily and can be worn everyday. It should have a bit of our own spirit or energy with it that we feel represents us. I always enjoy your videos because even though you love luxury items, you often go for unique items and it shows you truly buy what you like. Whereas many times, it feels like the "starter pack" is LV NF, Chanel CF, Hermes B or K, then Cartier + VCA selections. I think we should only buy things that serve us well, that we truly love, and that make us happy.
I think with luxury, I know it seems that everyone has the same stuff, but in real life most people haven't even heard of these brands. I would only buy what I love despite the social media exposure, which for me is Cartier, I just love the non fussy/frilly designs. In real life I have seen the Love bracelet once on the tube.
Couldn’t agreed more. In my town I’ve only seen another person wore the love bracelet. He actually had two love bracelets with diamonds. And I know he’s super well off because of my job position at the time. Besides that, haven’t seen one person wear one in my town. Same for my classic flap. Haven’t seen one person worn one in my town but me Lolol. I guess unless you’re from the popular cities.. (in the states: la, sf, ny, etc.). I love my luxury items ❤️
I’M ALREADY GOING TO CALL IT: This is the best video of the 2022! *** 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉 *** I can thank the pandemic for showing me a new way. I think as a decade(s) long luxury lover and buyer even though I may have the means, I’ve just really tired of the overexposure, and yes there is a social media echo chamber, but it’s harder and harder to look beyond it. I’m not anti big luxury brands, but I have sought out different non-popular quality brands more and more. I still love all the pieces I have but I don’t aspire for more. And I think the realization of not having anywhere to use these items made a lot of us reconsider the collections we already have. Love your videos Sophie, thanks for bringing up the topic!! ✌🏼
I am a jewelry addict - I own a ton of David Yurman pieces but have bought all but two of them secondhand. No regrets! I never really even considered buying Cartier or VCA, but I just did buy myself a Cartier tank francaise with a pink mother of pearl face for my recent birthday - and my husband surprised me with the same pink diamond Tag Heuer you've got, the only difference is mine is the chronograph rather than the number face. I love it, actually I love it more than the Cartier watch due to the blinginess!
Who caresss if "everyone has it"! If you like it for you then buy it! I have the same sweater you're wearing...it doesn't make me like it any more or less. If you want a one of a kind piece then get it custom made 🙄.
Agreed specially with Cartier those two bracelets and rings are seeing everywhere! On the other hand i feel VCA is so timeless everything holds their value and then some! I have been buying VCA for about 17 years and i tell you a few of my pieces have gone up in price sooo much ! it's totally worth it in my opinion .... plus VCA is so pretty. Totally can do without Cartier
I love this video. Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts with us! I, myself, have wanted a Cartier Love bracelet for years but it’s just something that I haven’t saved for yet. But I did purchase the Love ring for myself and I absolutely love it. I was disappointed about the way that it scratched SO easily, though. I even have some pretty deep scratches in mine and I took it back to the boutique to inquire about polishing. My SA then sat me down and shared a story with me about the collection. He said it is designed to wear and scratch that way. I know it sounds crazy but it truly is made to symbolize love. You find it and it’s shiny and new and beautiful. As your journey with love continues, you may be exposed to things that may cause nicks and bumps and scratches but the love endures. Even though it carries these marks now, it’s still YOUR love story. It’s a journey. Filled with memories and reminders of how much you’ve gone through. And I just thought that was beautiful and it made me appreciate my ring and the collection so much more. I’m a sucker for a good love story 😂 but that will always stick with me. 💚
Hi Sophie, I used to think the same way. But with so many types of lab created diamonds these days, and also synthetics and moissanite, etc… it’s even difficult for a jeweler to tell if it’s the real natural mined diamond. And here I’m talking about small stones for jewelry. So brands like Cartier, VCA, Bvlgari… they’ve put in enough effort to ensure what they sell are really what it is, the real earth mined gems. But yes, such a premium to pay for branding. I think there’s still value and peace of mind with the big brands. I do agree for larger bigger gems, diamonds, rubies, emeralds, sapphires…. It’s definitely a better deal with a local jeweler if they are certified by a reputable lab such as GIA. Personally I won’t go for anything without a lab report. But a lot of rare and precious stones only make their way to these big brands these days, for example the Paraiba tourmaline and Bvlgari. Great video, love it! ♥️♥️♥️
@@SophieShohetOfficial Thanks! I always enjoy the topics discussed in your videos 🥰 Lab created diamonds (nothing wrong with them) have the exact chemical, physical and optic attributes as real earth-mined ones. The difference is the price, and the disclosure of them is a very very fine line in this industry. It can only be tested using specialized equipment from a lab. So yea… really a peace of mind consideration for me ♥️♥️♥️
@@SundayRose99 That really is something to think about, I knew about lab diamonds but I just thought they’d need to be advertised as such. However, the points you raise about places not declaring them is a concern and something to be aware of! 🤯😲 Thank you again for sharing this xxx
I would prefer the lab ones bc of potentially bad labor enviroments and child labor involved in the mined ones. Not called blood diamonds for no reason. And, as far as I know, the chemical structure is just the same, you could even say the synthetic ones are better quality and more pure. I think the value of natural diamonds is artificially kept higher in our minds.
Very good point, the difficulty to discern the real from what is made in a lab. But, if Cartier and the others have the means to test the gems, I am not certain that they do it on the trendy pieces. Because they don’t take the time to finish with care the jewel in the first place (the love bracelet is known to need some repair in the first two years for example), they probably don’t take the time to inspect the tiny diamond for the more trendy pieces.
Love this video first time seeing this topic on TH-cam. I'm a high end jewellery designer, I've worked in the fine jewellery industry for years specifically in manufacturing and guess what... The majority of high end brands and high street retailers use the same manufacturers, the quality is usually the same 🤫
For the same money you could get something from a British designer, work with them to get something completely original to you. Goldsmiths Fair in London every year is a great place to meet them and try on things you would never see in shops.
Sophie, I totally agree with your perspective when It comes to seeing the same designer items plastered all over social media. In my own opinion it becomes oversaturated and becomes unappealing. I'm always on the Hunt to find New Designers with just as high quality (or even better quality) as these typical luxury brands that we see everywhere.
I typically only buy vintage sterling silver jewellery with real gemstones, it has to spark something inside me. Even my watches are vintage sterling silver, i get them serviced once purchased and they are worth every penny, they are generally unique as not everyone can buy one (availability, supply and demand).
I love that you have done this. I remember Jackie Aina doing an insta laughing at the purchase of those famous jewellery piece. At the time I actually wanted a cartier wedding band (yeah I know). After her insta. I thought what was I thinking. And it's known that cartier pieces are not even made well. Fast forward 2 years later I was lucky enough to have been left an extensive amount of vintage jewellery pieces by my mother in law. The quality of those compared to when I have seen cartier or vc in selfridges. I can't even describe it. I see it as day light robbery to be honest by these brands. Same way I prefer vintage chanel.
I'm having a hard time listening to your reasoning for not buying Cartier , while we know that on the other hand you spend (and talked about this in your videos) hundreds of Pounds on some Chanel costume jewelry that is made of crap with fake pearls that keep falling out. I'm sorry, but that 18k Love bracelet is a better deal. I don't have one but I do own an 18k Cartier Tank watch that was my mothers and even after 40+ yrs it's barely scratched and still runs fine.
I have my love bracelet for almost 10 years now. It was around £1600 at the time and I wear it daily until today. It’s scratched up for sure, but imo that’s the whole point. It’s how jewellery pieces get their character and become more personal. U pay for the brand and a lifetime of post-sales service. The fact that it was a gift, makes it extra special and sentimental. That said, my diamond pieces are mostly from local jewellers cos I can’t justify a crazy premium just for a little sprinkle of ice on designer pieces.
I just recently wanted a nice diamond ring. I had something in mind that would have cost me about $3000. Instead we went through the jewellery we inherited from my grandma and now I wear two of her rings. They cost me $200 to resize and they have a value of over $2000. They are about 70 years old, but in timeless designs that still look great. And they are more sustainable as well, since no new material was used. My tip is definitely to be open for vintage pieces!
I know it might not be a popular opinion, but in addition to the Cartier and Van Cleef items that you mentioned, the LV Neverfull and Louboutin have over saturated the market and become very "basic". Is it really luxury if everyone has it and the market is flooded with fakes?
That was me on Instagram asking about the jumpers. I don't comment on YT much. Can we all just note how Sophie Casually throws out she made that 2nd gorgeous jumper WITHOUT A PATTERN, like it was nothing at all. Mad talent there.
The only type of jewellery from VCA I dream about is their famous Art Deco collection from the 20's . The most stunning craftsmanship in the jewellery world .
To me, the uniqueness or sentiment behind jewelry is so much more important than just having an expensive name brand run of the mill piece just to say that I have it! Quality and value for the money should be your first thought. I don’t understand spending the ridiculous prices for costume pieces such as Channel items.
My friends family is from Iran & she went over one summer to visit her grandparents. The jewellers over there make the same designer jewellery for next to nothing and she said it’s amazing quality. Your paying for the name over here
Totally agree with the designer jewelry thing. I love jewelry and have always used local jewelers. The value is so much better. I also had a custom made flower ring inspired by the Chanel camellia ring and saved $2000. I also don’t love the classic Cartier & VCA designs so that helps me to not want it. And there are so many beautiful original pieces at local jewelers that I would want more.
I bought Cartier Love Bracelet & ring for years now and I wear it 24/7 yes it scratch easily, which jewellery doesnt scratch? Cartier jewellery can easily be clean it with jewellery cleaning cloth and it shine again. Cartier jewellery has it own value and the price increase each year. It is so much valuable than other designers clothing or bags!
Sophie I have to say how incredibly impressed I am that you’ve taught yourself to knit! That is unbelievably cool! Those jumpers are very pretty amazing job! 💗
Van Cleef is my all-time favorite brand. More variety than most people realize. And beats out overpriced costume jewelry. Have select pieces for decades. Some pieces inherited from my mother and I hope to bequeath it to the future generation(s).
Do you own any of the Alhambra? Are the stones difficult to care for? I’ve heard you have to be careful with lotions, perfume or SPF. The mother of pearl looks enticing. I don’t want jewelry I have to baby because it’s so delicate.
@@sandrar6670 Yes and with malachite, onyx, camelian and other stones I wear them like any other piece of jewelry. Mother-of-Pearl is the exception, you DO have to baby it as you could damage it and it can discolor.
@@VeronicaMowery Sounds like I need to go with onyx. I saw Christine Quinn from Selling Sunset and Princess Kate wear the VCA lariat style necklace and I was mesmerized. Such a stunning necklace.
Wow you knitted the jumpers ‼️ I must say I do love my Cartier jewellery even when the JUC gets caught up in everything 😂❤️ I’ve had my love bangle for years and it still makes me smile when I look at it, I have many gold bangles which are much more beautiful then the love but the love is still my favourite xx
I totally get where you're coming from. I personally only wear custom jewelry where I choose loose stones (diamonds, sapphires, what have you) and work with the jeweler to design the setting. And it's way more affordable than people think; you pay much less that the big box stores would charge you, AND you know exactly what you've got. I go for diamonds that have a paper trail that says exactly what mine it's from, and I can research the facilities and know the history of my stone. BUT I do like Cartier pieces just as fashion jewelry, just like I do like cheaper brands like Mejuri. Sure they're not special, anyone can have it, but it's just fun as an extra piece to wear.
i do exactly the same and it is not only a more rewarding process as it is so personal and you know exactly where it comes from and what quality it is, but it is also a good value for money and you do not pay for brand. i get the big brands keep their value so it absolutely depends if you "invest" in cartier so you can sell later - personally, this is not the reason i buy for. Refreshing video to see that it's really not just about the Cartiers and Van Cleefs!
Would loooove to hear your opinion on how luxury is becoming fast fashion-esque. Not sure if you did a video on this. As a newcomer I see a lot that I like but it’s not original or inspiring in most cases. The Van Cleef pendants are just a a bit too basic for my taste and that’s one of the main catches of luxury goods, uniqueness and exclusivity. Plus the trying to catch up and feeling behind is a bummer 😅
Hi Sophie, great video! 💕 I have some diamond earrings (for my triple forward piercing) and that was a special order so it made sense to go to local jeweller for them. But I think one of the big reasons why people go to big brands is that they want others to know how much they paid. We all know Cartier pieces and their prices so it’s instantly recognizable. It’s just human nature, nothing wrong with that, I find it amusing 😆 I agree with you on Dior, they are lost for now, hopefully they will find their way back to us soon. We have that in common, my fav brands are Dior and Audi, too! 🤗
And another point worth noting is that the Love Bracelet, for example, sells for far less than retail on the secondary market, it seems. You can get really nice jewels in antique shops and even museum retail boutiques. Thank you for the video. I hope your week is fabulous! PS: Social Media made it possible for me to walk into up market designer boutiques. Without seeing 'normal' people shopping in Chanel, I would have carried on believing you needed to be an Onassis heir to buy a card holder in one of those stores! But making it accessible also reduces exclusivity and that is, maybe, a double edged sword!
Congratulations on finishing the sweaters/jumpers! They look great! I'm tempted by preloved luxury jewelry just because it's so easy to resell if I get tired of it in the future. But I agree with you that having a wedding and engagement ring set custom made would make them very personal and create lifelong memories.
I agree! I repped a jewellery company that sold fashion jewellery, they had dupes of the Cartier nail bracelet. I wore that bracelet to its final resting place and realized then that I wouldn’t spend the high amount for the real deal. With my engagement ring and wedding band, all custom designed and made, 14 years ago. I do remember my jeweller telling me that going the custom route with a independent jeweller is a lot more less expensive and for better quality. My rings hold up even to this day, I receive tons of compliments when I wear it. I received certificates and the value continues to increase. It’s better to go the independent jeweller route. Better cost for quality.
Sophie, I really like this video. Personally I love and own several pieces from these brands but the points that you mentioned time and again my Mom and Sister tell me. It’s actually interesting to see someone from the lux community raise the same points. Along the same lines - luxury can mean different to different people… what I mean by that is - I like branded handbags and jewelry and shoes BUT and it’s a big BUT … I don’t like to buy clothes from Chanel or Dior. Just something 😉
I love this! I wondered if you knitted that when saw it. It’s awesome. I was knitting my Hufflepuff scarf when watching this ❤️ awesome job looks fantastic
Thank you for your explanation! I don’t have any jewellery from these companies, maybe I did not check them well enough but most of their stuff is really expensive!
The Cartier love bracelet is everywhere and it’s so expensive especially when you add in diamonds… even second hand they are priced high. Same with VCA . Great video Sophie
Your sweaters are gorgeous. More beautiful than the Dior you are wearing. About the jewelry, I agree. It would be interesting to have your perspective on Tiffany Elsa Peretti and Paloma Picasso pieces from back in the day. My husband bought me some Peretti pieces in the late 1980s and our second set of wedding bands were designed by Paloma Picasso and bought circa 2005. All are in silver and quite unique in terms of design. None were ridiculous in terms of price, but very unique in that I’ve never seen anyone wearing any of them. All in silver, btw. I don’t put David Yurman in this category because while I have a couple of his cuffs (and one that regretfully got away), his IS overpriced and far more common to be seen. Still not at Cartier or VC&A levels in terms of price, though back in the day, the latter was a slightly more accessible brand. My fine gemstone jewelry is always from small jewelers/antique stores and I study gemstones for fun, so I know the prices, even though retail fine jewelry is highly marked up.
Sophie! These are literally my exact thoughts on jewellery. Gold is gold, a diamond is a diamond whether it's from Cartier or an independent jeweller- they are commodities. I'd much rather get custom made jewellery. However, I do want an Alhambra bracelet 🤣 but Cartier- no way, everyone has them they're just not special at all. Also, your sentiments on how it's different with luxury bags was 100% how I see it.
Another thing is that you can get THE EXACT SAME model of cartier bracelets and rings in jewellery stores, the price will be astronomically lower and it will be 14k gold, making it more durable, so you're basically buying the look, for less, while being more durable :) You can even do the same if you like a costume jewellery piece from LV or Chanel, and you can get it done in 14k gold, that way you can wear it without worrying about it tarnishing or anything
Thank you for your perspective Sophie. I own both the Cartier love ring and Just the Nail (both in the thin version) and I absolutely love them. They have sentimental meaning and they give me that little luxury feeling everyday. However, I have no desire to get the matching bracelets. To me they are way overpriced, everyone has one and show more wear and tear than the rings. So I think comes down to the value you place on the items and your unique perspective.
However, I do want a few Van Cleef pieces, the more affordable/dainty pieces. I’ve seen them in store and they are absolutely gorgeous and I don’t see them on other people as much as Cartier. Luxury jewelry is a slippery slope like designer bags, once you get a taste for one you usually want more 😍
Omg I feel the same way you described abt the bracelets! I got the thin love ring to see if the brand was a look I enjoy on me, absolutely love mine since I use it to stack my diamond ring pieces but looking at love bracelets in person they are not for me, way too much wear in such a short time. I went for a diamond tennis bracelet instead!
Hi Sophie, loved your perspective and I completely agree. When I started following luxury channels and accounts on social media, it all felt very glittery and aspiring at first but now I’ve gotten bored of seeing some brands every now and then. It’s like watching excess has made me want it less, just like you said, like I owned it and got bored of it. Some things don’t feel “classic” anymore. Beautiful knit, it goes to show how you talk about learning skills, you practice what you preach and that is very inspiring. P.S. I also loved your art of storytelling in your “storytime” series that you did long ago (not sure if it’s accurate) it was the haunted house story. Enjoyed it a lot 😃
I'm totally impressed with your knitting skills, and that you used your spare time to your advantage. I thought it would be too hard so instead learned to crochet from TH-cam and I'm so grateful to those creators. I often joke that you could learn anything from TH-cam, even how to change the carburetor on a '57 Chevy (yes there's a video how-to, I checked!). As far as seeing an item on every influencer, it takes the item and even the brand down a notch sometimes. If everyone can have it (especially for free), then I don't want it. When it's jewelry, I'd much rather have something personal to me (like your custom ring) or gifted/handed down. For fashion/handbags I'm forever scouting out new and small brands that make things that work for my style. I like that you don't follow every trend, it's always about what works for you. You are great at knowing your style and body type and how to look your absolute best, it's always fresh and you're honest and have original thoughts as to your selections. When you do choose to partner with a brand it means more because of that, I'm more likely to appreciate what you're sharing.
Cartier is typically 18 karat. The pieces resell well. I would rather a slightly scratched 18 k bracelet for the same price as a bag that can get stained and holds smells. Everything isn’t for everyone.
I've worn my Cartier panther watch every day for the last 35 years (yes, I'm old!). Cost per wear on that would be low for a quality piece. Over those years I've watched my friends buy many less expensive watches that didn't hold up. However, I would never buy the popular Cartier bracelets for the same reason you mentioned. I'm bored seeing them on influencers.
Hello Lady, Wow, soo true, you have really open my eyes, with the pure influence of social media the hype is unbelievable but people like you who brings true awareness. This is why i didn’t buy the Chanel Cuff bracelet after finding out it’s brass & gold plated and scratches easily, why buy it when I already have real gold jewelry. I’ve learn about different Diamonds quality also. An influencer just said how she bathe in the Van Clef necklace and the stone color is faded and ruin. It made me re think because I already have good quality gold/emerald & diamonds Jewelry. Why should I pay thousands of dollars for lower quality, thank you Sophie, food for thought….. Blessings!!,!,🥰
Love the video Sophie! For me I totally agree that designer high end jewelry is such a rip off! However… I love spending my money at Cartier. I agree it seems commonplace but I enjoy buying their pieces and creating unique combinations of jewelry to make if feel special for me. However I do not own a love bracelet because I do think it’s quite basic but if someone who loves me had bought it for me I would gladly wear it because of what it symbolizes. Also I kind of admire the worn/ scratched look because, to me, it shows that it has been worn and loved. Idk it sounds weird saying it but I stand by it! Lol
Sophie I feel HEARD! I totally agree with you, the once one of a kind or special piece I might “vision board” almost becomes a hashtag or basic piece. I think it comes down to people wanting view/likes/followers more than they care about originality because that’s what’s on trend. Copying styles not inspiring styles. PS I love your channel, it always feels like you make videos based subject matter first rather than ‘it’s Wednesday, I need to upload something! Sinéad, Dublin 🇮🇪
Wow, that's amazing that you knitted those 2 sweaters. I was wondering wear you bought the cropped one when you wore it in a recent video, but it turns out you made it. You're really good at knitting!
I definitely agree with you about what you are saying about the Jewerly and almost what you are saying about the high end bags , you are saying that high end bags you can’t get at a regular stores , but you can’t get the high end design like Cartier love bracelet at a regular jewelry store either. So when it comes down to it , it’s just which items we are willing to pay the tremendous over priced items. If we wanted to be honest to ourself none of this items are worth the money, we are all just paying for the high end names on it. Yes the high end named brand jewelry aren’t really worth it either is the high end named bags either
I loved the Cartier Clou from the first time I saw it in the store. And I went back and forth, and even today, I was looking at it again, and once again, I said I'm going to wait on this. I don't know what it is...maybe it's what you say Sophie...oversaturated in social media. I've had the Love bracelet for years and years, and I still love it. But it's a little more understated and not as identifiable right off the bat. I've also been going back and forth on the Alhambra from Van Cleef...same story
The great thing about knitting is after a while you can knit almost anything you see on the runway since it's usually much easier to find the same yarn and to figure out the pattern. I don't have room for it anymore but back in the 00's I used to machine knit my own Italian cashmere sweaters. I did study textile design in college which is how I learned knitting machines. But you can do a lot with hand knitting as well.
I have been saying for a while… 2018/19 was a great year for a lot of brands. I love most of the Prada from that year, dior, Fendi, Chanel!!! Like you, I haven’t been that excited since then! I’m still buying 2019 styles at the moment! ❤️❤️ So impressed you made those jumpers! You could sell them!
Interestingly, in Singapore we have alot of local goldsmiths who sell Gold from 18Karat to 24Karat (Pure Gold) and you might be surprised by how much we pay for their workmanships and quality of the gold! It’s ridiculously affordable compared to Cartier/VCA (these brands always sell 18karat). We pay market price per gram here and it’s more value for money vs designer brands, really bang for your buck. You could even customize it and make it personal. I always feel that jewelry is something really personal which holds sentimental value, so no thanks to VCA/Cartier and even Bvlgari.
You made some excellent points that make a lot of sense regarding jewelry. I agree that purchasing from a reputable jewelry provides much better value.
hi Shopie ...love all your knits ..and your vlogs ..allwaays good to share the truth in ones items ,,for future purchasind ,,,so thankyou for all the positive info..stay well ..happy new year....😃
Sophie, it must be said again and again to you: You are a wise, sophisticated and high achieving woman. You taught yourself to knit beautifully. You are definitely a woman to be admired.
I can’t agree more! Thank you Sophie for sharing all that you do and share with us! I definitely admire and look up to you for so much!
SHE KNITS! she just got a new subscriber.
Whenever we go to dubai or saudi we buy lots of 18ct and 21ct gold there
Exactly! Obviously Cartier sells their brand name.
So not only do the small shops have better prices and same to better quality, they also have better jewelers and better conditions for their jewelers (and they can obviously recreate the 'famous' designs if that's what you really want).
well don't be shy add her IG or websites, let's see her work i adore jewellery, indie brands is even more precious to me
Yes please share so we can all support her business. Win-win
I’ve honestly never understood the hype with Tiffany.
even their engagement rings?
Costume jewelry is a joke... just some random cheap jewelry with a logo on it.
@@perthfanny3017 I agree.
@mero maya beylght ko khaire ho ra bolamaya amar 6 Facts!😇
At least you can repair fine jewellery pieces~
Designer costume jewelry is such a waste of money, in my opinion. Pieces can be £500-£1000 for metal and crystals.
I just bought one but I totally get your point! Far too mainstream
Edit: In terms of diamonds, I only have my engagement ring and a pair earrings - I sound in this video like I’m dripping in them, I’m not! hahaha!xx
@sophie Check out Mirta! They do handbags made by artisans in Italy.
I thought that those beautiful Maria Tash earrings that you wear had diamonds in them.
As a former jeweller in Italy I know all too well the feeling of "oh, but it's not Pomellato"..
There are some AMAZING artists out there...who could make the same Jewellery piece with better quality stones...but people (at least over here) only want the brand.
Ill take the quality grazie 😃
Italian jewellery I have is of a good quality. I'm glad I have it.
Can anyone share some some high quality brands that aren’t mainstream - looking for Valentine’s Day present ideas for my husband and I refuse to buy from the above mentioned brands
@@Nancy-tr1qp try mr porter
Oh I agreed, I felt the exact same way watching this video.
@@linalulu5153 rubbish!
Still love them and will buy and enjoy them!!!!
social media has ruined the chanel flap bags for me.
I still want one. The story behind it just makes me happy.
I've also seen all of the luxury pieces for great buys from resellers.
so true!
Bvlgari is not underrated it's just not advertised on social media from lots of influencers. Rich people know about Bvlgari and buy Bvlgari but many people don't even know what is it. Old money is whispering
I have a vintage watch from them. 1957. I LOVE IT.
I have a bvlgari item it is lovely, however I was looking at the design more than the name. I love mine
I agreed, the bvlgari jewellery is well-made than Cartier - personal preference
@@susanbaker2796 I have the Cartier tank, I love it so much and it feels quite understated.
I have a Cartier trinity ring too and I love it!
RE: weight of carats. If I’m completely honest my Cartier juste un clou which has
So fascinating to hear your perspective on all of this!
Oh wow 👌🏽 1000%
It is a good mindset to look value for money items but your £1500 DIOR hoodie is at the opposite of your demonstration. PS: you always pay for the brand.
It’s interesting what brands people enjoy, isn’t it? I don’t see a lot of Chanel as worth it. But I do love Cartier. Yes, a few of the styles, like the Love, are instantly recognizable. But a lot aren’t. I even love the patina (the scratches) that develop over time as a piece becomes part of your everyday. A handbag I carry for a few hours, my Cartier I never take off. ❤️
I love my tank watch
My thoughts exactly I could never justify a Chanel bag but my love bracelet is very special to me
I bought the large juste un clou in rose gold with the diamonds in Zurich and I absolutely love it, no regrets.
Hi Sophie, you are a breath of fresh air. I love how you keep it real/100!
They both have passed so it's very special.
chopard does a nice floral ring
Also love the hand knit sweaters (jumpers) ! Beautifully done!
LOL starter pack, I love it! I like the H Kelly and the VCA necklace.. but please no NF 😆
Agreed. A lot of people are not willing to buy or cannot afford Cartier
I’M ALREADY GOING TO CALL IT:
This is the best video of the 2022!

I can thank the pandemic for showing me a new way. ✌🏼
Interesting to hear this from someone who has the means to purchase these items! Totally agree!
I'm glad you enjoy your purchase, but man, that's a great marketing technique to excuse the quality of the product.
Just polish it at the local jeweller every few years. What is the problem ?, you don’t like the scratches, you will like the polished look.
Aw, Sophie, Dankeschön for remembering my question about the sweater. Your taste is impeccable.
Very good points here! Xx
I know what you mean!xx
Greece also has very talented and unique jewelers and you can recoup the VAT!
Your collection sounds beautiful. I love sterling silver and I’ve been collecting for years.
All opinions welcome and some good points made by you! Hugs xx
Agree. Sophie just sort of threw it out there like it was no big deal. Like everyone does it. I am beyond impressed.
i LOVED the common sense knowledge of this video. Thanks for your perspective. Much Appreciated. Greetings from Finland
@@VeronicaMowery malachite? It is said to be very fragile and not suitable for everyday use
@@sandrar6670 from what I have read, the onyx and Carnelian are the less fragile ones. You should check Moh's scale!
My knitting skills are limited to the most basic of scarves, your jumpers look adorable!
Wow you knitted the jumpers ‼️
I must say I do love my Cartier jewellery even when the JUC gets caught up in everything 😂❤️
I’ve had my love bangle for years and it still makes me smile when I look at it, I have many gold bangles which are much more beautiful then the love but the love is still my favourite xx
Thanks for your videos. I am locked down in Toronto in Winter and they really cheer me up. My husband is English and I LOVE LONDON
You make a great point in your PS. Really good point. I would have assumed the same.
Congratulations on finishing the sweaters/jumpers! They look great! I'm tempted by preloved luxury jewelry just because it's so easy to resell if I get tired of it in the future. But I agree with you that having a wedding and engagement ring set custom made would make them very personal and create lifelong memories.
Sophie - That jumper (or sweater as we call it in the states) is gorgeous. You are very talented and have amazing taste. I always enjoy your videos.
Interesting, chanel handbags aren’t much different
“You pay for the brand” is exactly right. Go to any middle eastern gold store and you can buy 24K gold for WAY cheaper. VCA uses 18K gold.
I'm so excited for your knitting- it's so Relaxing! 😌
I love those knitted sweaters Sophie! well done! I wish we could buy them :)
Finally. Someone said it. I totally agree with everything you said. Shop smarter should be our motto now.
Lol
I get it.
I have actually been considering purchasing a Cartier ring as of a few days ago and then you make this video! You read my mind 😂😂
Hello Natasha, I agree - you can start to knit designer inspired items (I'm still learning but I'm getting there lol!) xx
@@SophieShohetOfficial You'll get there. One stitch at a time.
This is why I love you and your videos, Cuz you do your research and unfiltered opinions
I love my Cartier love cuff and ring. It’s totally worth it for me and I absolutely enjoy wearing them
Hey Aditi, that's all that matters! These are just my opinions for me :) Hugs xx
Would you buy from a jeweler with great quality but it's an inspired design from the luxury brands? Bvlgari serpenti ring but with great diamonds?
You made some excellent points that make a lot of sense regarding jewelry. I agree that purchasing from a reputable jewelry provides much better value.
hi Shopie ...love all your knits ..and your vlogs ..allwaays good to share the truth in ones items ,,for future purchasind ,,,so thankyou for all the positive info..stay well ..happy new year....😃
Your hoodie is sooo cute! Great video as usual Sophie
