    It is a good mindset to look value for money items but your £1500 DIOR hoodie is at the opposite of your demonstration. PS: you always pay for the brand.

    It’s interesting what brands people enjoy, isn’t it? I don’t see a lot of Chanel as worth it. But I do love Cartier. Yes, a few of the styles, like the Love, are instantly recognizable.But a lot aren’t. I even love the patina (the scratches) that develop over time as a piece becomes part of your everyday. A handbag I carry for a few hours, my Cartier I never take off. ❤️

    I am a jewelry addict - I own a ton of David Yurman pieces but have bought all but two of them secondhand. No regrets! I never really even considered buying Cartier or VCA, but I just did buy myself a Cartier tank francaise with a pink mother of pearl face for my recent birthday - and my husband surprised me with the same pink diamond Tag Heuer you've got, the only difference is mine is the chronograph rather than the number face. I love it, actually I love it more than the Cartier watch due to the blinginess!

    I think with luxury, I know it seems that everyone has the same stuff, but in real life most people haven't even heard of these brands. I would only buy what I love despite the social media exposure, which for me is Cartier, I just love the non fussy/frilly designs. In real life I have seen the Love bracelet once on the tube.

      Couldn’t agreed more. In my town I’ve only seen another person wore the love bracelet. He actually had two love bracelets with diamonds. And I know he’s super well off because of my job position at the time. Besides that, haven’t seen one person wear one in my town. Same for my classic flap. Haven’t seen one person worn one in my town but me Lolol. I guess unless you’re from the popular cities.. (in the states: la, sf, ny, etc.). I love my luxury items ❤️

    I usually don’t like flashy brands and go for subtle logos or plain. So to want something that’s distinguished on sight isn’t usually my style. I wonder if that is why I stepped back from getting the Cartier bracelet or ring or like you mentioned it is everywhere. I see it a lot in videos I watch and agree it became so common place.

    Social Media works both ways for me. It often triggers the "need" to have things, too, at first! After a while it often goes into the other direction. I feel saturated and almost annoyed by the many youtubers and instagramers presenting the same stuff. When it comes to jewelry I have pretty much the same point of view as you. Regarding bags I have become very critical to what I buy. Is the bay I am seeing really suiting my lifestyle. Do I have a similar one? Do I really like it?.... The pandemic has made me more critical and sustainable in many ways. I realized I don't need a classic flap in every color!

  • @rachelchua9699

    Finally someone said it. Sophie's points makes a lot of sense. I'd like to add to the discussion, that back then people tend to buy jewelry as a form of investment because they could easily pawn it off in case they need money. To my understanding, they only base it on the weight of the metals. If the practice remained the same, then branding doesn't matter. Do pawnshops now consider the brand of jewelry? I've never pawned anything so I'm actually curious.

    But if we are happy to buy it than it’s worth it at the end because it puts a smile on our face , just that a lot of people get into debt just because they want to feel special and FOMO . Yes nice Quality is nice to have . Fortunately you and your husband did well and make good choices in finances and worked hard to able to purchase this kind of stuff. 😎

    I absolutely love Bvlgari! But the brand doesn't seem very popular in the US. People prefer Cartier for sure. I also like Chanel's fine jellwery which is not as popular either. The only thing is with Bvlgari you can find brand new pieces at the discounted price at some stores. Not with Chanel. But you (US customers) can buy CC pieces in Europe, like I did, and save about 15%.

  • @GBFragrances

    I completely agree. I wanted to buy a Love bracelet from Cartier with the diamonds (not full diamonds, just one every other "screw") and when I asked about the type of diamond and clarity it was the exact EXACT same diamond type and clarity that I asked for in a piece of jewelry I saw on a cruise...not that's not worth it but I'm not gonna pay Cartier prices for something with the same quality I can buy anywhere else. PLUS I ended up buying a Love bracelet without the diamonds and it was defective!!!!!! since I bought it outside the US Cartier in the US didn't want to take accountability because they said it was purchased abroad (so it's not like we think that it's an "international brand" and we'll have life time guarantee and so on and so forth, they probably operate under some type of franchising and don't take any accountability for something purchased outside of the country where they operate, even if it was at another Cartier boutique). Long story short, I knew a lady who worked in Cartier Las Vegas, she was kind enough to do me a huge favor and took the defective bracelet and sent me a new one. Guess what? It defective. Sent it back, got a new one, and again, it was defective, the screws would unscrew and the bracelet fell off.... I ended up using purple Loctite to be able to wear my bracelet...but do you pay Cartier prices to fix the problem with Loctite??? I Googled this and apparently it's a known issue with this model (with the newer Love bracelet). Ever since I've decided I'm not gonna buy Cartier anymore. I even sold 2 watches I had 'cause I don't wanna have anything to do with them. Sophie, you're simply the best!!! Been following you since the last couple years and I can't get enough. BTW: Dior is also my fave high end brand💜.

    My sister began her career as a jeweler for Tiffany and behind the scenes it is not elegant... they often hire jewelers fresh out of college so not necessarily the best and they are so 'mass marketed' it's like an assembly line in a dirty factory, the big name ones all do this! She now has her own jewelry business and on the side makes items for another small fine jeweler's shop that hires only experienced jewelers, and they are treated much better. Yes, the designers for the big box names may be 'famous' but they just come up with the concepts, the actual jewelry is created and assembled by lower level jewelers than most small and mid jewelry shops. So not only do the small shops have better prices and same to better quality, they also have better jewelers and better conditions for their jewelers (and they can obviously recreate the 'famous' designs if that's what you really want).

You are paying for a Tiffany box and a freshly graduated series of jewelers to assemble your ring among hundreds of others per day. Way better use of money to select a small independent jeweler, perhaps a master craftsman, to design and create your ring, usually at a much better price 🥂

    Right on, Soph. I used to have a friend who worked at Cartier. The funny thing is Cartier and these brands have a proper high jewellery section with genuine unique pieces that go for as much as seven figures. So the Love bracelet or the Alhambra to them are just play money. Meanwhile the mass affluent crowd (us) oogle over them like they're genuinely valuable. They aren't that valuable. The brands know that, we should know that too.

    • @queenoasis
      @queenoasis 2 ปีที่แล้ว +54

      Have you actually owned any VCA or Cartier pieces? The resale value for the Alhambra and Love pieces are almost the same as market price. Most of the "mass affluent crowd" probably wouldn't buy their highest priced items...it's the mid range pieces that sell the most and fetch proper good prices in the pre loved market. I know because I've been buying and selling these items for the past few years.

    • @marianroberts7242
      @marianroberts7242 2 ปีที่แล้ว +77

      Actually in business terms, those jewelry houses probably make the make the most money on pieces like the Love bracelet or Alhambra collection because they move much higher volumes of these items than the pieces from their high jewelry collections, despite the lower price point. So those wouldn't be "play money" to them, more likely their bread and butter. It's the same business model couture houses use were their couture lines and shows bring them attention and prestige, but their ready to wear lines, small leather goods, perfumes etc are actually their most profitable categories.

When a Chanel bag or Hermès is not attainable for the majority of people, ever, even with saving. I try to look around at the people in my life and note how truly, no one really has a Chanel/luxury bag and most don’t care and are happy to simply carry practical bags that fit their style and life.

    I think a point that's missed is that just like classic handbags, luxury jewelry pieces also retain and grow in resale. So they too can be bought as investment pieces and naturally have better longevity and need less care than handbags.
    Plus at the end of the day they are still precious metals, so even if all else fails, they will always have value.

    Is it really luxury if everyone has it and the market is flooded with fakes?

    I’d rather buy designer jewelry than designer clothing like a sweater. If you gain weight, that clothes can’t be used while a designer jewelry will be forever. So in terms of value or worth it, I’d rather buy the designer jewelry.

    Instead of buying an engagement ring at Tiffany’s, I made my now-husband buy an even larger diamond of the same C/C/C quality at a jeweller’s and had him set the ring and design the band in a way I liked (lots of instructions for my poor then-boyfriend😁). He did an amazing job and the ring was still quite a bit cheaper than the Tiffany’s one. The main difference is the box it came in and that there’s no logo engraved inside. Two things I really don’t care about. On top of that, I now feel the ring was much more personal because my husband didn’t just go to a store and bought it, but had gone to the jeweller’s several times to get it exactly right.

    I bought the large juste un clou in rose gold with the diamonds in Zurich and I absolutely love it, no regrets. I was aware I was paying a premium for the prestige and brand not for the weight of gold and carats. The love bracelet is nice to have but not as beloved as my juste un clou.
    I got the love bracelet in white gold and diamonds Just elevates the look.
    I’ve purchased fine jewelry cheaper from reputable jewelers with higher carat weight than Cartier, but I’m okay with that.
    I did quite a bit of research before hand. If you’re concerned with scratches, buy it in white gold, it doesn’t show up as much.
    Not sure if I’ll ever buy VCA Alhambra.
    I’d rather get the Blvgari serpenti next.

    Yep, I'm not into the " overexposed everyone has" pieces. I like vintage jewelry or items that are off the radar. I have a camellia flower pendant necklace from Chanel that I purchased in the early 2000's. I adore it and it's still in perfect condition. Other than my wedding rings, the ring I wear everyday and get the most compliments on is a turquoise and diamond ring my dad bought my mum in Greece in the 80's. She gave it to me. They both have passed so it's very special.

    I own both the love bracelet and the just un clou and also the just un clou ring. I also own a vintage Tank watch. I absolutely adore all these pieces and wear them everyday. The trick to buying and appreciating these things is to connect them to a sentimental moment like a birthday, push present or job promotion. I would buy all of them again! Also they become more precious the longer you wear them as they have been through more memories with you.

    Hi Sophie, I used to think the same way. But with so many types of lab created diamonds these days, and also synthetics and moissanite, etc… it’s even difficult for a jeweler to tell if it’s the real natural mined diamond. And here I’m talking about small stones for jewelry. So brands like Cartier, VCA, Bvlgari… they’ve put in enough effort to ensure what they sell are really what it is, the real earth mined gems. But yes, such a premium to pay for branding. I think there’s still value and peace of mind with the big brands. I do agree for larger bigger gems, diamonds, rubies, emeralds, sapphires…. It’s definitely a better deal with a local jeweler if they are certified by a reputable lab such as GIA. Personally I won’t go for anything without a lab report. But a lot of rare and precious stones only make their way to these big brands these days, for example the Paraiba tourmaline and Bvlgari. Great video, love it! ♥️♥️♥️

      @@SophieShohetOfficial Thanks! I always enjoy the topics discussed in your videos 🥰 Lab created diamonds (nothing wrong with them) have the exact chemical, physical and optic attributes as real earth-mined ones. The difference is the price, and the disclosure of them is a very very fine line in this industry. It can only be tested using specialized equipment from a lab. So yea… really a peace of mind consideration for me ♥️♥️♥️

      I would prefer the lab ones bc of potentially bad labor enviroments and child labor involved in the mined ones. Not called blood diamonds for no reason. And, as far as I know, the chemical structure is just the same, you could even say the synthetic ones are better quality and more pure. I think the value of natural diamonds is artificially kept higher in our minds.

    • @osiria75
      @osiria75 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Very good point, the difficulty to discern the real from what is made in a lab.
      But, if Cartier and the others have the means to test the gems, I am not certain that they do it on the trendy pieces. Because they don’t take the time to finish with care the jewel in the first place (the love bracelet is known to need some repair in the first two years for example), they probably don’t take the time to inspect the tiny diamond for the more trendy pieces.

I’m not anti big luxury brands, but I have sought out different non-popular quality brands more and more. I still love all the pieces I have but I don’t aspire for more. On the other Hand if you Design it yourself of Course you have sth unique!
    Uniqueness of a Stone 🤔 - of Course every Piece of GemStone is Unique. They are the same Kind of Frequency, maybe even some Sort of "Legacy" of the eARTh. I do believe every single Chrystal has it's own Value!
    Why? Remember how many Million Years it needed to be formed by Nature! It has a unique Shape which influences its Power. And all the Time it was kept on the same Place, until someone took it from there to create Jewelry.
    I even do believe that every Stone has its spiritual Owner. If you like you could concentrate where "your" Rockchrystal or your Rosequartz or your Diamond is, where you can go to find it and: ... it might even come closer to you?!

    Whole heartedly agree with you Sophie!I think there are some cute fine jewelry pieces from fashion houses and some other major jewelry houses, but I feel like the pieces from VCA and Cartier are almost like a uniform. I totally respect if people love them for their own style, but you can always find something that resonates with you and is likely at a lower price point for just as good if not higher quality. One could argue the same for any other items we might love, such as shoes or bags etc. But jewelry is extra special in my opinion as it can be handed down for generations easily and can be worn everyday. It should have a bit of our own spirit or energy with it that we feel represents us. I always enjoy your videos because even though you love luxury items, you often go for unique items and it shows you truly buy what you like. Whereas many times, it feels like the "starter pack" is LV NF, Chanel CF, Hermes B or K, then Cartier + VCA selections. But I did purchase the Love ring for myself and I absolutely love it. I was disappointed about the way that it scratched SO easily, though. I even have some pretty deep scratches in mine and I took it back to the boutique to inquire about polishing. My SA then sat me down and shared a story with me about the collection. He said it is designed to wear and scratch that way. I know it sounds crazy but it truly is made to symbolize love. You find it and it’s shiny and new and beautiful. As your journey with love continues, you may be exposed to things that may cause nicks and bumps and scratches but the love endures. Even though it carries these marks now, it’s still YOUR love story. It’s a journey. Filled with memories and reminders of how much you’ve gone through. And I just thought that was beautiful and it made me appreciate my ring and the collection so much more. I’m a sucker for a good love story 😂 but that will always stick with me. 💚

      Just polish it at the local jeweller every few years. What is the problem ?, you don’t like the scratches, you will like the polished look.

    Love the Dior sweater!! I’ve wanted it for ages but it keeps being sold out online 🙂. Love bracelet looks nice but TBH it does put me off that it’s become this “must have”. I really like the lesser known line of Cartier which is the Panthere collection. It’s currently a bit out of my price range 😀. It’s a cool design though. I draw the line at Tiffany basic diamond studs. You can get a much nicer diamond for same price and it’s not like people can tell it’s Tiffany, it’s just a stone on a stick lol.

    Same as you, I like to research the weight, carat, clarity, etc of any jewellery piece (I do favour diamonds) to work out if it's good value. I really like the look of a couple of Cartier pieces, but I know I'd be paying double what it's actually worth. "You don't wear the box" 👈🏼 that pretty much sums it up for me! 💎

      It’s worth what people are wiling to pay for it. You can apply the same logic to designer handbags. The cost of goods and labor to make the bag is far less than the prices they charge.

      @@sandrar6670 Absolutely. Although, as Sophie mentioned, it's easier to find an independent jeweller who can offer top quality pieces, than an independent handbag creator. I wish I could though, imagine having the perfect bag custom-made for you! 🤩

    Love the video Sophie! For me I totally agree that designer high end jewelry is such a rip off! However… I love spending my money at Cartier. I agree it seems commonplace but I enjoy buying their pieces and creating unique combinations of jewelry to make if feel special for me. However I do not own a love bracelet because I do think it’s quite basic but if someone who loves me had bought it for me I would gladly wear it because of what it symbolizes. Also I kind of admire the worn/ scratched look because, to me, it shows that it has been worn and loved. Idk it sounds weird saying it but I stand by it! Lol

    I was inquiring about a van Cleef pair of earrings the other day and just about had a heart attack when the associate told me they were 16 k. For stud earring! I think not!

    Interestingly, in Singapore we have alot of local goldsmiths who sell Gold from 18Karat to 24Karat (Pure Gold) and you might be surprised by how much we pay for their workmanships and quality of the gold! It’s ridiculously affordable compared to Cartier/VCA (these brands always sell 18karat). We pay market price per gram here and it’s more value for money vs designer brands, really bang for your buck. You could even customize it and make it personal. I always feel that jewelry is something really personal which holds sentimental value, so no thanks to VCA/Cartier and even Bvlgari.
