I've read somewhere that the final picture is of two lonely souls meeting each other. Michael Collins, an Apollo 11 astronaut, was dubbed the “world's loneliest man” after his time passing through the dark side of the moon alone and losing communication with earth for over 40 minutes. The mysterious '52 Hertz' whale leads a life of solitude as it emits a call that always goes unanswered due to the frequency being unrecognisable to other whales.
It's actually from the poem The Astronaut's Whale by Joey Barro
The theories/explanations that are most commonly accepted:
- Based on a poem called The Astronaut's Whale by Joe E.B.
- The mv represents different types of loneliness and the loneliness felt from loss.
- Represents the loss of the three members and how it effected the remaining members, but also how they'll lean on those that stayed & carry on~
It could honestly be a combination of two or all three even~~~
EXO's winter albums are supposed to be like letters/gifts to the fans. Since these albums are mostly for charity, EXO gets a little more freedom to use these albums to talk to fans, especially as years went on, about how they felt throughout the year and hopes for the future^.^
I hope, with the obvious success of First Snow, SM will take a hint.
"Sing For You" came out in 2015 and it is literally, as the title says, EXO singing to EXO-L. Some say the MV and song are about how the members feel and how they are dealing with the 3 Chinese members -- Kris, Luhan and Tao -- leaving the group. The remaining 9 members really felt like they let fans down during this time and that they broke their promise to always be one. (As you may know, EXO's slogan is "We Are One," which represents how even as sub-units they were one group and they are one with the fans, etc. So, when the Chinese members left, the rest of the members felt like as a group they broke that promise.) So this song was a promise and apology song.
This was so far from simple times for the members of EXO. This was probably one of the hardest times for EXO and EXO-Ls.
That's why you see Chanyeol and Suho get in a fight, because as the leader, Suho really blamed himself for not being able to keep the group together and Chanyeol is pretty much yelling at Suho to stop blaming himself and that there is no point because Kris, Luhan and Tao made their own choices and there is nothing he could have done about it even if he wanted to, etc. They are all angry and sad because they felt like they were all so blindsided by everything that happened. A lot happened during this time, and there was so much uncertainty about what it meant for the group, etc.
In the beginning you see them happy because this was after they have worked through their anger and are now learning to move on. The parts where you see them sad and angry are flashbacks to recent moments where they were still working through their feelings of anger and sadness.
In the end of the MV you start to see them being happy and playing around as friends again because they were learning to get past it all and move on and they made the choice to let it go and to keep singing for us, EXO-Ls. :)
The whale seems kind of weird until you discover the meaning behind it all, and then it shows how clever and meaningful they were with the concept. The whale is supposed to represent Alice a.k.a. "The Loneliest Whale in the World", who is an unidentified whale species, she is the only whale that has been found to emit a call at a really high frequency, which means that when she speaks there might not be any other whales that can hear her or answer her back.
Sehun is the one who is in the spacesuit and he is supposed to represent the lonely feeling you get floating all alone in space. The astronaut comes from the story/poem about an astronaut who spent time alone in his spaceship as he came back to Earth and how he said that time was the longest and most lonely of mankind.
The combination of these two concepts, along with the lyrics of the song, talk about being away from home, being somewhere unfamiliar (since the whale and astronaut are in space) and being isolated from everything and everyone. Isolation is one of the themes within the MV. The song and the MV seems to talk about how everyone, in their lifetime, will reach a low point where they feel most isolated and like they don't belong or don't fit in, etc. But as the song says, EXO promises that this song and the members will be there to warm listeners', and especially EXO-Ls, hearts.
Most of the time when you saw the member in the video they were the voice you could hear singing in the song. If you want to know what the lyrics are about you should look up a lyric video.

Okay, this one is about the hardships they went through when 3 members left the group. They were having hard times and the members were having their own traumas in themselves. Suho was blaming himself for not being able to protect his members and kinda hurting himself as he looked like in the MV. Chanyeol was trying to make him understand that he's not the one to be blamed at all and they were arguing. The fight scene was actually a demo of that. People say that Sehun with the whale scene represents loneliness.
So, the overall scenario is, after 3 members left the group, they were absolutely not okay and they expressed it through this MV.

Its always so much funnier when you're so deep in your feels on the verge of tears and then something unexpected pops up 😂 the "🥺🥺 😀.. what?" had me rolling
I remember when this dropped back in 2015 have fans crying their eyes out because the story of EXO is just really said because when you look at suho and chanyeol fighting because you can tell how suho looks lost and is blaming himself for three of the members leaving the group around that time but chanyeol is telling suho it's not his fault that's how he felt in real life what does fans telling him it's not his fault. And three of the scenes represent the three members who left the group with sehun floating in outer space represent Galaxy which is member kris . The basketball scene represent the member Luhan. The fighting scene also represent member tao. The reason you see sehun in space with the whale because it represents the poem the astronaut's whale the astronaut is the Loneliest man in space and the whale is the loneliest whale in the ocean is known as the 52 Heards whale the only one known of its kind the whale can only communicate at a frequency of 52 herds 52 herds cannot be heard by any other whale in the ocean when he sings his song No Other whale can hear it making it the loneliest whale in the world. But the lyrics of the song is about being too shy to express your love to someone because of the fear they won't receive are reciprocate your message. EXO are portrayed as lonely and isolated and removed from their friends. That's why you see the past relationships and also the empty present lives without those friends. And also that's why you see members disappearing. Kai witness everything going on and it's also thinking it's his fault that he couldn't do nothing about what was going on that's why he is so angry. And the parts were Kai is dancing in the snow represent him filling the blows from the punches that suho and chanyeol are doing when they're fighting. When the astronaut and the whale come together you see all the EXO members coming back together as one again. By the way the part where you see xiumin passing the ball to Kai and Kai running towards D.O in the car crying they were showing support for each other letting each other know it's okay. Because 2014 and 2015 was pretty dark days people were wondering was EXO going to disband haters with talking bad about them saying they should give up but they didn't. EXO proven they are a tough group it's not easy to break them

And Kai’s dancing here is just unmatched. How he expresses emotion through his art is amazing. As for the whale and Sehun... I'm almost sure that is a reference for a poem?? Or a short story? About the lonely whale and a lost astronaut. And you can see that when the met, the members return?? Is like they are not alone anymore? Something like that
Sing for u mv is so iconic!!! You can interpret it many ways I think, but as far as I know the song itself is about finding peace and warmth in those who are close to you. So universally it's about love, romantic or not. The mv reflects it really well. You can see in some of the scenes members are alone, in some they are with others. I think it shows us that it's normal to sometimes feel lonely. Life doesn't always go as we want it to, but we can find comfort in other people. The scene with Sehun and whale is so iconic. In general whale is a symbol of peace and hope. Whales are so large and beautiful, but usually travel alone. Here in the mv, Sehun is all alone in the space, just like we feel sometimes that we have nobody to turn to. But even in that situation he finds someone. It's like two infinitely lonely creatures find each other in this empty world, and give each other hope

Kai is the first alone, anticipating the loneliness and frustration the band members are going through, then he expresses the fight through his dance. He is the one to be reminded that together they are strong, that they need each other as they need EXO-L. In the concept, Kai is the one who is tasked with bringing them all together. I think that is why we see him and Leader Suho really angry, they feel the responsibility of the loss of some members more. The others to me seem more extremely upset and sad, even Chanyeol who could be trying to help Suho work through his anger. Sehun, the youngest, is left afloat, alone and confused. The story of the lonely whale reflects this. At the end, they realise they can get through this together and that they are stronger together. It's a song they sing live to EXO-L, giving us the same message.
Like all things concept, there are so many ideas. There is enough to get our imaginations going, but not enough to pin anything concrete down. It's brilliant, just like this song.

when i first watched this mv, i understood that it was about brotherhood, loneliness, loss and redemption. the fighting scene symbolizes the conflict between 2 friends and in between theres kai's dancing scene - symbolizes inner conflict. the wandering astronout symbolizes uncertainty and loneliness. imagine being left alone in space like that. the whale is said to be the loneliest creature lives in the deep sea. but in the end they found each others in a place you couldn't even imagine a whale would be: meaning 2 lonely souls who are destined together will meet each other even in the strangest circumstances. maybe because i'm exposed to deep meaning mvs since young. so, my mind is a bit creative in interpretation.

The whale and the astronaut part of the mv reminds me of one of the Doctor Who episodes about the last space whale of its kind that come to the aid of humans in their time of need.. So it maybe representing loneliness in the mv originally but for me it has a different meaning.. Like it is showing that even if you feel like you are floating across space lost and lonely, help and friendship may still appear in front of you in the least expected time or form..

This mv honestly reflects so many stages of grief that the group went through after the loss of members and how they came to term with the new life without them. The mv starts with denial but ends in acceptance.

Don't read the concept into everything....this is just a deep song about loneliness. The solitude people may come across in life under different circumstances....the scenarios are not clear cut, and the whale certainly mads everyone question it's significance....thank god for Google....
The meaning became sadder for me when I learned of the astronaut and the whale, I swear these deep songs need to come with summary sheet...
But by no means would I tie the concept into it....of course it is hiding there somewhere, but it's not apparent, and I take away the saddness it conveys instead. Not all Exo songs portray the concept that you obviously feel the need to interject...some are just love songs, or songs of yearning, hope, brotherhood, betrayal, new beginnings, loneliness and saddness.

Whales are not the loneliest animal in the world, they usually swim in pods, so no they are not alone. It's an isolated case with the whale EXO used as a reference in this MV where the frequency used by the whale is higher than the regular thus no other whale responds whenever it calls out.
No need to be cranky if others don't get it. Just explain it properly and kindly like all other EXO-Ls do or just simply don't comment if you find it annoying or if you're bothered by it. And it's Christmas for chrissake, let's not be toxic! Baekhyun went live earlier and wished us all well in good spirits, you should've watched it instead.
