My great-uncle was Bob Lund, VP of Engineering at Thiokol. The Challenger launch had already been delayed several times; Bob recommended against launching until the weather improved to at least 53°F. The engineers didn't have enough data to confirm safety under that temperature range; NASA flipped the burden of proof and said to prove it was unsafe. Robert Boisjoly was surprised the shuttle lasted long enough to even take off.
If o-ring wasn't invented, many of machines would be much more expensive as they need welding, flange joints or soft metal gasket, which all cost more to implement.
Small mistake - at 12:06, you say “…from 30 degrees…” when it should be “…from negative 30 degrees…”. Graphics show it correctly though. And love your videos, please keep them up!!
13:00 I would prefer if you didn't narrate the specific numbers if you already have them on the graphic, as it makes listening more confusing for me personally. I'm not sure others feel the same, but that's just my opinion. Love the channel, I've been a long time viewer.

Why reupload?
had to remove a clip, copyright strike
damn yt sucks
@@NewMind Just curious: What clip was it?
@@Thomas..Anderson a finger poking an o-ring, and an o-ring backup device being installed, around 17ish mins
@@NewMindA serious infraction indeed.😐

It's interesting that something as simple and important to modern technology as an O-ring wasn't patented until shortly before WWII.
Well, will play this re-upload in a muted tab, to give it some engagement...
Good idea! Will follow suit!
good informative video!
This is great stuff! Handyman's delight.

You have a problem with the audio in your video. I hear clipping which wasn't in the original upload.
*Listening though headphones*
What I wanna know is what other shape of "ring" is there? Do engineers have square fingers or smthn?
@@agxryt Some are D-shaped, some are V-shaped more like a scraper and many more specific shape. All called O-ring :P
I also hear clipping
I hear a sound like crackling and popping in the audio with my headphones.
plopping sound the whole time..
Cool. Thanks for sharing.
Excellent video. We Parylene coat millions of silicone 'O'-rings every year to add lubricity and chemical resistance.

How many reuploads do you want?
I thought I was experiencing deja vu till I opened the comments to confirm I've seen this before
sigh. youtube copy strike and needing to reupload 😢 on the plus side, i was still happy to watch it again
I literally watched this yesterday?
He got a copyright strike
Is it reupload I think i watched before
Ah, the humble O-ring.
Why the reupload?
Feel like I just attened an o-ring lecture as part of my non existant mechanical engineering university course lol.
Sorry you needed to pull the original down. Posting for engagement.
Better watch it before the video is deleted again missed it the first time 😂
21:10
had to stop watching because your audio is popping
Omg I thought its was my car goddamn 😂
Rubber circle = Genius
Rubber orings to seal hot combustion gasses?
who said they were made of rubber?
He did. Starting at 0.23 in the video.
No put oring on pp
Me when the rubber ring is simple
repost...
Ayyeee tenth comment! Let’s go! Do I win a prize? Also, can rewatch this all day haha.
lol what do you want?
@@NewMindyour reply was enough 😂. Thank you

Bro manage to make a whole video out of the most boring thing ever 💀
that's my thing
Yet it encompasses and enables most things to function in our everyday life.
People's entire jobs are devoted to this one "boring" thing, a short video barely scrapes the surface.

UTTERLY unwatchable (unlistenable?)- narration is ATROCIOUS.
