The absolute best thing you can do for ANY powerful car is put good tires on it. My stock '02 C5Z with brand new GoodYear Supercars (the OE Tire) was an ANIMAL. Passing a car on a two lane road the back end would start slipping going over the yellow lines in third gear. It felt crazy, wild, whatever you want to call it, it was out of control unless it was on nice fresh asphalt. The second year I owned it I put a set of Nitto RIIs on and MAN what a difference! It completely tamed the car and I could actually use first gear and pound it into second without losing the back. I always drive in Competitive Driving Mode, and it will allow a surprising amount of wheelspin before cutting power. I don't blame anyone for losing interest in a car and selling it, but I can't stress enough that you will not have experienced that car fully without putting a good set of ultra sticky tires on it. With the mileage you're doing they will last several years and it will literally transform the car. After the first full throttle rip through 1st and 2nd you'll thank me! You won't need to be in 3rd gear going 100 MPH to hear that awesome engine hit redline under power. :) EDIT: If you were impressed with how much seats improved the car, you'll be blown away by a set of sticky tires!
Thanks a lot for this! I had a feeling that was the case. So when i filmed this i had a hunch the car was sold. I actually sold the Car to Cleetus Mcfarland and he just debuted the car as a drift build. I will get another one
Exactly the same with me! My 02’ Z06 had similar power to this one (long tubes-hi flow cats-x-pipe-exhaust, blackwing CAI, intake manifold, couple other little things, tune). After my tire switch, I could literally stomp it @ 3,500 rpm in first gear without anything more than a chirp, with another chirp on the 1-2 shift. Before, 1st was virtually unusable, with 2nd not a whole lot better.
Looks like you cherished this nice z06. Well now it's in the hands of ole Cleetus. He will push it to the limits and beyond. He seemed so happy to own it in his video driving in the Freedom Factory. The car really sound so good!
He really likes it, it's the perfect car for what he is going to do with it. I will miss the car for sure, but happy I get to see it live on. Got some big plans for its replacement
Would love to own a c5 Z06 someday it's up there with one of my favourite cars, unfortunately they're quite pricey in the uk, and the steering wheels on the wrong side :(
Yeah add tires, I run the Hankook Evo 12 V2 and they are not the most expensive but have good reviews and serve me well. I stay around the Tail of the Dragon and have no issues. My car is a Y2K with 485hp/494tq to the tire. Edit: I added Wilwood calipers and such as well.
@@danielkinsler46 Nice. Did you notice a strong torque increase with the stroker kit? Or difference in the qualities of the power band? (Assuming those modification was done separate from others I guess) I had a 67’ C-10 w/ a 383 stroker in it; double-hump heads (Corvette), engine and drivetrain was entirely built (475 rwhp), 4-speed Muncie etc. Would tach over 8k. That beast would pull the front tires up on the 1-2 shift if you allowed the front suspension to load. I bought it like that though, so I didn’t get to experience it before the increased stroke. I’ve thought about getting another LS (I’ve owned a 99’ FRC as well as 02’ Z06, both heavily modded. I got the 02’ up to 212 mph) and stroking it, as I love broad power bands and naturally aspirated power.
Most people in the comments agree, new tires are a must. When I got my C6 convertible new, the first thing I ditched were those god awful , stupid expensive Good Year Run Flats. BTW, try to run a set of road racing slicks, just for shits and giggles ( only on a warm/dry day ! She’ll be handling like a rat wearing Reeboks ! LOL
As someone who threw a fair amount of money at a low mileage, clean C5 Z06 - don't. The EBCM is one failure point, then you have the window seals (unique to the C5Z and the FRC and hard to find without paying a lot), very screwy electronics. My speedo when I changed the battery pegged past 200 mph and only fixed after a few weeks of driving around. The build quality is very poor overall as the C5 was the Corvette that almost wasn't made. Had to get the torque tube dropped to fix a main seal oil leak, rear transaxle developed a slow leak. Then later on, bearings in torque tube were going bad and it needed the whole rear end and torque tube dropped again to fix that. I ditched it before that went out to save another $2k bill. I wouldn't do it again, I'd go for an '08+ C6 if I were - but just being honest, domestic build quality is just too low for me anymore. I got a taste of the good stuff and I can't go back now.
I went from a 99’ FRC w/ blackwing intake, Borla X-pipe/exhaust, and tuner, to an 02’ Z06. There is a quite notable improvement in power; the entire rev range, too. I was under the impression that the power in the Z would be more peaky, and sacrifice low-end, but this wasn’t the case. The Z made more power from idle. It also pulled *hard* all the way to its 6,600 rpm fuel shutoff, whereas the LS1 drops off hard above 6,000). I noticed an improvement in handling and braking as well. The gears are more closely spaced, which I like. 6th is still plenty high to get good fuel mileage on the highway. It’s totally worth it, plus you won’t likely lose money when you decide to sell it.
Dont get rid of it. Its the last Corvette with flip up headlights before they went with those stupid looking fixed ones. You will feel just as bad as you do about the s2000 if you get rid of the vette. GET NEW TIRES. lol.
You'll sell this car before it's fixed up. Tired of it..... Then it's just another Craigslist car that "needs a few things". No disrespect, can hear it in your voice. Add it up, $1200 tires, $3000 paint, yep, Craigslist. I've got a '94. It IS a second driver. In my case a 6th driver. You can't daily a Vette. It's useless. Can barely get in and out of it. Love it though, if your a Chevy man, you'll own a Vette in your lifetime. Your's sounds and runs good as crap. Hope you keep it and track it for fun. You're close to VIR. 👍👍👍👍
No unintended disrespect, but the C4 is pretty much a useless car compared to the C5. If you've never driven a C5 you owe it to yourself to check it out. The C5 may not look like a modern car, but the engineering is light years ahead of the C4. Just getting in and out is SO much easier in the C5 you'd think it was a different car altogether. I've always liked Corvettes, my Dad had a '60 when I was young, but the Vette was never really on my personal radar until the C5 came out. I daily drove my C5Z in the summer for several years and it was incredible. I put 26k miles on it the first summer (yes, April to November) - I just didn't want to get out of it, and I did a ton of highway driving for work back then. Granted, I was still in my 20's, but it really is a comfortable highway cruiser. Great mileage to boot!
@@superspeeder What C4 are you talking about? I have a '95 C4 & a "03 C5 Z06 and outside of the power it is not light years ahead of the C4. Stop repeating what you hear others say who have not owned both. I daily drove my C4 for 10 years. With the C4 being a hatchback it is more accommodating than the C5 and is more comfortable. And my C4 handles as well if not better. The C4 '95 C4 also has better build quality on the interior..the C5 seats don't even compare. I sell cars for a living and have sold many Vettes. The C5 Z06 might be a better car in some ways..but a base C5 is not light years ahead of a C4.
Alfonzo Curry C4’s do handle surprisingly well. Iirc, they have the lowest center of gravity of any vehicle ever produced @ 16” (or maybe it was 18”.. either way it’s great). The later C4’s with the LT-1, like yours, are actually really good performers. Ultra flat power band, awesome low-end, virtually zero body roll, etc. All that being said, and with all due respect, I don’t see a C4 handling better than a C5 Z06. I’ve owned both. I can’t think of any circumstances in which this would be the case from any perspective, honestly. The C5Z’s steering feel is more communicative, upper limits are higher, control at the limit is better, when you exceed the lateral threshold and it finally breaks traction it is more controllable (although both are absolute handfuls, and take an experienced driver with ultra-quick hands to correct), has better overall response to throttle/braking/steering input, feels more neutral, much better steering position, better at quick transitions, etc. Braking is noticeably better as well, and the brakes can take more punishment without getting hot.
As a corvette guy.. I like these... but with the price... the C4 and C6 are better looking cars that can either get you close (LT4 or LT5 C4), or exceed (LS3) the performance of a C5 Z06. The 90's look did not age well IMHO. Don't get me wrong, I still love these too though and understand that my preferences are subjective as hell. lol
@@Garagetopics Well, again its totally subjective. The interior of these were pretty rough, even by vette standards, and they sorta went all in on the 90's aesthetic. And it's not like they are ugly either. But they just ended up being a bit dated. But they are still fantastic cars and a shit load of fun to drive.
The styling is purely subjective like you said, but the rest of your statement isn't. Not even a c4 zr1 comes close to the performance of a c5 z06, whether in acceleration, handling, or ease to modify into a track monster. And not including the c6 z06 or zr1, c6 models with the ls3 do not match a c5 z06's performance. As far as price is concerned there is a reason the c5 z06 is considered by many to be the best 'budget' or bang for the buck track car, even with prices going up. A stock c5 z06 has near 50/50 weight balance, weighs around 3,100 lbs, 0-60 in about 4 seconds, low 12 second 1/4 mile, 0.99g skidpad figure... and those numbers can be increased with relative ease while retaining reliability. Impressive figures even for today's competitors...
