My parents started a canteen when I was pretty young, like 12 years or so. They started it with just two tables, 8 chair a gas stove, two kettles, 20ish glass cups (yeah those pretty looking cutting chai cups). My mom used to prepare and my dad used to serve them. I was told to mind the counter and sometimes also deliver the chai to neighborhood shops and offices. I used to do all those chores alongwith my studies and I used to do it with full passion. Because for me I wasn't aware what my parents had to go through at that time. My two elder sisters had to get married and that was their bigger concern even though they too got their post graduations and proper jobs while doing their part time jobs. We were a struggling yet a happy family. My both sisters got married to humble and good families I got admission to a good college, my parents still were working day in and out even though now the business was grown to multifolds. We got a full fledged kinda hotel running in a mere span of 6- 7 years. The journey was tough for my parents and it was seen through their diminishing physical and mental health but they never budged a hit. They faced losses in prime years, people conned them, offices which never paid their dues went absconding in a night and no one was there to ask for the due money. Other shopkeepers insisted my father to lodge a complaint with the police but my parents know it would be a waste of time and money as well. So such things happened. But they never let those things to harm our family peace. They always said rather we earn or we learn in a business. This words still make me look ahead in my life. Now I am in a good job overseas and doing good. I was insisted to carry on with our business bit I wanted to see the world. And I have already seen the half of it and all due to my parents. The moral of the story is, if you want to become a successful entrepreneur/businessman, woman, you need not to be a brand or something. All you need is patience, and a sense of - bearing losses and gradual process of growth and earning. You can't be expecting money flowing from all directions on the first quarter of your launch day of your start up. Like a baby, it crawls first, eats and licks dust for some days, get immune to it then start walking and eventually starts running. But you can't guarantee your kid won't fall. Falling is a part of life.

As a person living in Hyderabad, my personal view was that real estate and property rent rates, especially the floor space for a commercial shop is priced at astronomically high levels, which makes it almost impossible to make a high revenue purely from tea and coffee sales. This is why over 90% of tea kiosks that I saw are mostly attached to a restaurant, as an extension, and standalone kiosks are very rare here. This is my observation anyways. Also, I think the biggest cost factor, far higher than the milk, sugar or tea powder, is that of the gas cylinders to run the stove. Gas cylinders are getting more and more expensive, and commercial cylinders (19 kg capacity blue cylinders) are priced much higher than domestic cylinders, so that is a huge consumable cost for any kiosk. I feel that this cost pulls down the profit margin by a huge amount. Also, if you think that tea kiosks could save money by switching to electric stoves, think again. The electricity used for commercial uses (like shops and hotels) is priced at much higher levels than domestic use, which would again pull the profit down anyways. The thing is, to make a decent profit, identifying key locations is essential to capture demand, which is what had been done by the legacy kiosk owners who were mentioned here. Just randomly opening a kiosk somewhere wouldn't give huge profits, as the demand needs to exist there, i.e., there should be enough foot traffic to halt at the kiosk to buy a tea or a snack.
Local chai wala has one advantage over these fancy chaiwalas that is the local know how means he knows how to engage the coustomers and increase repeat rate. For research just go and listen to the conversation between chai vendor and coustomers you will understand why these franchises don't work they will have to make different environment which gives customers a hit to come and engage with their product

As a person living in Hyderabad, my personal view was that real estate and property rent rates, especially the floor space for a commercial shop is priced at astronomically high levels, which makes it almost impossible to make a high revenue purely from tea and coffee sales. This is why over 90% of tea kiosks that I saw are mostly attached to a restaurant, as an extension, and standalone kiosks are very rare here. This is my observation anyways.
Also, I think the biggest cost factor, far higher than the milk, sugar or tea powder, is that of the gas cylinders to run the stove. Gas cylinders are getting more and more expensive, and commercial cylinders (19 kg capacity blue cylinders) are priced much higher than domestic cylinders, so that is a huge consumable cost for any kiosk. I feel that this cost pulls down the profit margin by a huge amount.
Also, if you think that tea kiosks could save money by switching to electric stoves, think again. The electricity used for commercial uses (like shops and hotels) is priced at much higher levels than domestic use, which would again pull the profit down anyways.
The thing is, to make a decent profit, identifying key locations is essential to capture demand, which is what had been done by the legacy kiosk owners who were mentioned here. Just randomly opening a kiosk somewhere wouldn't give huge profits, as the demand needs to exist there, i.e., there should be enough foot traffic to halt at the kiosk to buy a tea or a snack.
Local chai wala has one advantage over these fancy chaiwalas that is the local know how means he knows how to engage the coustomers and increase repeat rate.
For research just go and listen to the conversation between chai vendor and coustomers you will understand why these franchises don't work they will have to make different environment which gives customers a hit to come and engage with their product
