That's not so crazy at all. It's actually very clever from the composer & lyricist to use the same lines and their rhythms again but with a different melody. Especially in the verses. Comparing these two songs is a masterclass in musical theatre songwriting. Both songs are really good. But in order for the tone and spirit to fit the main character and the plot point within the story, the military war theme had to make place for something more "positive". Even though the songs have different titles you could actually make a case that they are both different versions of the same song.
If there is ever a revival they should do a mash up up of this and positive. Like start of with positive an the vivienne ticks them off and the transfer into love and war. It would the beautiful.
I actually think they should do a mashup of this song for the musical; Love and War mixed with Positive. I think it would flow beautifully. And the delta nu girls could be split down the middle with how they think Elle should approach it but they all end up singing the same thing...oof that would be amazing. Or even better...they start off singing positive but as soon as Vivian does something to set them off, they go to Love and War
I like the fact that in this song Dequina Moore got more of a solo spot in this song. Just like Leslie got huge solo spot in Bend and Snap. And her (Dequina) note/riff in the last "Sure" was amazing.
This song is amazing, but honestly it doesn't belong in the musical. It's too dark and sinister compared to the peppy optimism of "Positive". Plus Elle's character wasn't designed to have an edge to it, she was meant to be sweet and lovable :) But I DO love seeing this side of Elle, it makes her more relatable to many teenage girls, including myself.
Elle's character is supposed to be sweet and lovable, she sees every person as beautiful the way they are. and love and war doesn't really fit her character
I mean, Idk. I find it kinda funny, honestly. It feels angry, but the rudeness doesn't feel genuine in this, it's more of just a person being like "Maybe I should...? No, that'd be rude and unfair, and probably make the situation worse."
I love when Vivian and Warner "go through" Serena and she looks at herself realizing they didn't stop because "she isn't really there." I think Positive works better for the show; but I wish they had kept Leslie's high note, and of course, the "I'm talking to myself, so what?"
i actually like this version a lot toooooo omg when she goes "YEAH I'M TALKING TO MYSELF" that's HILARIOUS! i wonder which version she likes better? :D
having elle’s sorority sisters as the greek chorus, both bc it follows one of the earliest formats of the first musicals/plays ab tragedy and bc it’s “greek life” is so genius and entertaining
as much as this kind of clashes with every other song in the musical, i like this slightly more than positive. ppl say that positive represents elle better bc of course she’s super positive, but so does love and war. if u think abt it, after warner said he was dating vivian, elle’s world got turned upside down. love and war better shows the chaos in her head. even though the song is more rigid and dark, it still shows elle’s positive side, even with her mind telling her to do something rash. positive DOES fit with all of the songs better, but love and war shows her feelings a lot better id say
That guitar riff from the junk shaking part fits a lot better with the song "Love and War" than "Positive." I'm guessing that if this song never existed, my favourite guitar riff of all time wouldn't either.
positive is way better in terms of the musical. its an awesome song for a show like mean girls, where there's not a lot of kindness going, but Elles persona is kind and bubbly and positive emulates Elles essence. overall changing love and war to positive was a great move.
I absolutely LOVE that. Leslie Kritzer is so amazing. and I really like Positive, but I feel like this song really brings out the FIERCENESS in each of the girls. they all sound incredible. I also really love DeQuina's placement of "hey, Warner, pleeeeease" at 2:00.
I like the attitude of this song and the Yeah, I'm talking to myself, so what! part is so smart, but the melodic line of Positive is much better. Anyway it was not the best time to make war references in a musical. I love LBB and I think she plays the best Elle Woods.
This song is so much better (pun intended) than Positive in my opinion. I get that Positive fits in with the musical and Elle more but Love and War is just so good, I would rather it. Also the LAW (Love And War) Easter egg is a nice touch. I’ve been trying to look for a Love And War soundtrack audio but I can’t find it. Too bad
I like what everyone else says, a mash up of the two. It starts off as Positive, Vivienne sends the greek chorus into a rage and it turns into Love and War. But I love this song sm and wish it was in the show, but Positive fits the vibe a bit more.
Agreed; the song 'Positive' fits the Broadway version of the character much better. They were looking for something 'feel good' and it definitely fits the bill. But who can't love a line like 'ninja kick her through a door', eh. :D Or the way whatsername, Margot? Hits that high note. Awesome.
I do love this song but I can see why they replaced it... It's so much darker ten positive, which isn't always a bad thing but it doesn't really fit the show itself which does have a very light air about it. I don't know, it kind of reminded me of something evil.
Not sure I like how bitchy it is, Elle is supposed to be a good kind hearted person- not calling Vivienne a beast and stuff, it's catchy and a good song but the lyrics are wrong for Elle!
WAY. WAY. WAY better than positive. Much more character, too. It's like Broadway meets En Vogue. But it was cut because they felt it was too "catty". So they made Positive, the kittenish version I guess. Blech.
No, on the soundtrack the roles of Pilar & Serena are played by Dequina Moore & Leslie Kritzer (OBC & the ones in this video) - on the MTV broadcast those roles were played by Asameret Ghebremichael and Traci Jai Edwards who are both currently playing those roles on Broadway.
so i love both versions of this and i understand y they cut this song out but i have never heard the word whore sound soo good like tht note by leslie is amazingg.... oh and when laura says "yea im talking to myself so what" .... fave line and i wish they kept it in the actual production
Well, they changed alot of things from previews to Broadway. For example, when they weren't in the Greek Chorus, all of the Delta Nus were in different shades of Blue. Elle was the only one in Pink or anything besides blue. They also had a Brooke wearing shorts instead of pants durring Whipped into Shape, I believe. This song wasn't the only thing they changed! :P
@GlindyUpland and @morbucks10 During its San Francisco run, the musical included a song "Love and War" in place of what is now "Positive". Another predecessor to "Positive" was "Beacon of Positivity
Listen to the light golf clap after the song, clearly Positive was much more well received and enjoyed by audiences, which is good cuz i love that song :P
... because this was back before it was on Broadway and this song is kind of the equivilent to a deleted scene. These are also the actors from the OBC, so only Serena and Pilar have changed from the MTV performance...
I think positive more fits the mood of the show but i just like this song better, i think it's funnier..it also is so funny to me how different love and war....and positive hahah love both regardless haha
try listening. This is a completley different song, sweetie! :D This is before they came up with the song now in it's place that you know as "Positive."
It's crazy how it sounds so similar to Positive, yet so different at the same time!
That's not so crazy at all. It's actually very clever from the composer & lyricist to use the same lines and their rhythms again but with a different melody. Especially in the verses. Comparing these two songs is a masterclass in musical theatre songwriting. Both songs are really good. 1:44 is no one gonna mention this _pure beauty_
Carlos Alejandro Alvarenga Leslie is a beastttt! So damn dope
If there is ever a revival they should do a mash up up of this and positive. Like start of with positive an the vivienne ticks them off and the transfer into love and war. It would the beautiful.
rahsaan parham that would be SO smart! like they’re trying to keep it positive but Vivienne says something that rips them off the edge
YES
You gotta make sure you keep "yea im talking to myself, so what!"
I think Positive fits better in the musical, but this song is amazing. I wish it was a bonus track, or maybe just put into another musical.
Tivona S. I think it fits tbh bc in the moment she's upset and angry. So she's acting rash because she hasn't had time to recover
Elle's character is supposed to be sweet and lovable, she sees every person as beautiful the way they are. and love and war doesn't really fit her character
I so agree
I mean, Idk. I find it kinda funny, honestly.
It feels angry, but the rudeness doesn't feel genuine in this, it's more of just a person being like "Maybe I should...? No, that'd be rude and unfair, and probably make the situation worse."
Positive is a better fit for the musical. But I'd definitely place it after the Serious reprise as a reprise to Positive
OMG 1:56 when Margot takes Vivenne's bag to the face and carries on like the absolute BAMF she is!
lmaoooo
I love when Vivian and Warner "go through" Serena and she looks at herself realizing they didn't stop because "she isn't really there." I think Positive works better for the show; but I wish they had kept Leslie's high note, and of course, the "I'm talking to myself, so what?"
Two songs that are so similiar but polar opposites is WILD. They did the damn thing with that!
i actually like this version a lot toooooo omg when she goes "YEAH I'M TALKING TO MYSELF" that's HILARIOUS! i wonder which version she likes better? :D
having elle’s sorority sisters as the greek chorus, both bc it follows one of the earliest formats of the first musicals/plays ab tragedy and bc it’s “greek life” is so genius and entertaining

i feel like the two songs mixed would be AMAZING
i love that this is the "evil" version of Positive.
"Negative"
can we talk about 1:44 and how amazing leslie kritzer is?
I absolutely LOVE that. Leslie Kritzer is so amazing. and I really like Positive, but I feel like this song really brings out the FIERCENESS in each of the girls. they all sound incredible. I also really love DeQuina's placement of "hey, Warner, pleeeeease" at 2:00.
I prefer the way Love And War sounds but Positive is a better fit for Elle
I like the attitude of this song and the Yeah, I'm talking to myself, so what! part is so smart, but the melodic line of Positive is much better. Anyway it was not the best time to make war references in a musical. I love LBB and I think she plays the best Elle Woods.
mahnu666 I completely agree LBB is the best
I’m glad that shaking junk is in this version because I love instrumentals there
1:42
"Pull her hair and call her--
*AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA* "
She's actually saying "whooooore" lmao
@@DesminTaylor i know haha it just kinda sounds like that
I completely agree!
I feel like the choreography and lyrics itself is just FIERCE.
although its funnier and has great belts, Positive is so much more energetic and has a better beat
So I think it's apropriate that I got my heart broken while this song is playing. IRONY!
Too bad
Agreed
I like what everyone else says, a mash up of the two. It starts off as Positive, Vivienne sends the greek chorus into a rage and it turns into Love and War. But I love this song sm and wish it was in the show, but Positive fits the vibe a bit more.
They should've kept the line "Yeah. I'm talking to myself. So what?"
That line is hilarious!!!
Agreed; the song 'Positive' fits the Broadway version of the character much better. They were looking for something 'feel good' and it definitely fits the bill.
But who can't love a line like 'ninja kick her through a door', eh. :D
Or the way whatsername, Margot? Hits that high note. Awesome.
i know its been 15 years but that was serena not margot 😔
No, Laura Bell Bundy, it's rude to talk right throught such a magnificent note.
Keep it positive was a better fit in the musical but love war is still so amazing that is should had a professional audio recording.
i just noticed today that annaleigh's face got hit by the bag in 1:55
i play this in my head whenever i'm in this situation. =] it always helps me win.
LMAO I LOOOVE IT.
"yes im talking to myself, so what!"
I do love this song but I can see why they replaced it... It's so much darker ten positive, which isn't always a bad thing but it doesn't really fit the show itself which does have a very light air about it. I don't know, it kind of reminded me of something evil.
I love the way they all move at around, precise and fierce 00:35
No, I'm glad you put this up. It's better than nothing at all. Thanks!
Not sure I like how bitchy it is, Elle is supposed to be a good kind hearted person- not calling Vivienne a beast and stuff, it's catchy and a good song but the lyrics are wrong for Elle!
This has such a catchy tune! I found myself actually singing this during school!
so mad that this song was cut! it was my fav, but i have come to love positive.
as a song, i like this better than positive, but positive fits the show way better
Wow I love this Serena
She is really good, and love her voice
I love that "Yeah I'm talking to myself. SO what?"
even though it's not really like elle woods, i love this one. it's so kickass!
I miss this song ♥
Why does a demo of beacon of positivity exist but no studio version of this. An injustice I will be upset about for the rest of my life.
This song is so BOMB! I do love Positive, but this is, well, SO MUCH BETTER! Dude, 1:45...amazing!
Not gonna lie. I love positive, it's my favorite song in the show, but I do love this song, and I kinda wish it was in the show.
yeah, I've seen it, too, but they took it off and this is the only SF I had :(
WAY.
I love that belted high G!
"PULL HER HAIR AND CALL HER A WHAAA!!"
i know! that's why i think it is cool that the bag is in the show!
"YEA IM TALKING TO MY SELF SO WHAT!!" XDDD
this is an awesome song
Leslie is amazing. I like this song
i loved when she said "YEAH I'M TALKING TO MYSELF, SO WHAT?"
I really like this song, but Positive definitely moves a lot more smoothly.
i love it when she does that part
i'm like WOW she is amazing
Ahhhhhh Leslie's amazing!!!!!
so i love both versions of this and i understand y they cut this song out but i have never heard the word whore sound soo good like tht note by leslie is amazingg.... oh and when laura says "yea im talking to myself so what" .... fave line and i wish they kept it in the actual production
It was in the original version in San Fran but it was cut and replaced with positive when it went to broadway.
seeing wicked in 2 weeeks in nyc cant wait
hahhhaha "yeah im talking to myself so what!?" hahaha
This song is okay, but Elle is sweet and kind not aggressive
ThatTH-camrDebra yes exactly
i like positive more too, and it fits better.
but this is so bluesy! love the belting through out.
I like this so much more than positive
I love this song
absloutly AMAZING!!!
and it comes so easy
i love othsongs!!! this is really good too.
this is so much better than Positive.
Not cohesive with the other songs. I like Keep It Positive more
@GlindyUpland and @morbucks10 During its San Francisco run, the musical included a song "Love and War" in place of what is now "Positive". Another predecessor to "Positive" was "Beacon of Positivity
This sounds like mean girls not legally
Something about the first minute of 'Whose House is This' reminds me A LOT of this song. I believe Nell Benjamin composed both.
yeah, i didn't even know she could do that! wow.
I feel Heathers Vibes
the score was actually written by the same guy who wrote heathers!
Can ANYONE please find/make an instrumental for this? I've searched everywhere and I cannot find it. It's very powerful.
I know, right! The first time I heard it start off that low, I started backing away from my computer. :P
Listen to the light golf clap after the song, clearly Positive was much more well received and enjoyed by audiences, which is good cuz i love that song :P
its closing because they r touring it and the broadway show is coming to london insted! its already in the process of being casted
someone make a mashup of this positive and beacon of positivity
... because this was back before it was on Broadway and this song is kind of the equivilent to a deleted scene. These are also the actors from the OBC, so only Serena and Pilar have changed from the MTV performance...
I think positive more fits the mood of the show but i just like this song better, i think it's funnier..it also is so funny to me how different love and war....and positive hahah love both regardless haha
nothing just felt like talking about going cause im excited lol
Tbh I like this better than "Positive"
I like this WAYYYY better than positive.
I wish they'd kept that line!!
lol. I love that part. And they did what they thought was best for the show even if they took out all that. :/
Ooooh yay!!!!
*joins the waiting* I want to see BECKY!!! lol. :P Gotta love the tour! :D (Which includes Lauren and Rhiannon...)
... because it's the pre-broadway run. They changed things after previews sometimes.
totally agree! =)
oh i see.
thank you very much,
:]
thanks
Yeah, I noticed that too...
I like this on it shows the voices on the PMS girls. i mean it has ssome big improments that would make it a hit. i like the both really
try listening. This is a completley different song, sweetie! :D This is before they came up with the song now in it's place that you know as "Positive."
there are no places online where I know, but we wrote the lyrics on Elle's Lounge. I'll put the link in the description :)
