The German tech tree in War Thunder has plenty of great tanks, but few are as versatile as the Gepard anti-air vehicle. Based on the Leopard 1, it can shred pretty much anything it sees, whether they're tanks or planes. It doesn't even need the sabot.

The same company that made the 35mm cannons for the Gepard, also makes brake parts for locomotives. Used also outside Germany.
I mean...Oerlikon's a Swiss company, so yeah. Of course used outside Germany.

@@wifelikecow God, don't get me started on cicadas. Was down in Missouri for a family reunion, cicadas were out in full force. We shot guns that day, pretty sure the cicadas were still louder. It was legit disorienting by the end of the day, though the sunburn didn't help with that.

The main reason why people don't constantly talk about the Gepard being an absolute menace to basically everything is because it's just become commonly accepted facts
Another thing that helps is the fact that a large portion of the players using it are absolutely braindead. If they were smart, the gepard would shread anything. It's better than the shilka in every way: speed, penetration, damage, reaction time, accuracy, and even protection, as seen in the video. And yet somehow, when i play, i get more kills in my shilka than the allied gepards.

In real life it was also recently discovered that they're a great counter to small drones and loitering munitions. Everyone (especially the Dutch and German armies) is now realising that it was a mistake getting rid of their Gepards in favour of missile based anti air.
@@RoonMian Most aircraft at that time there much faster and they would be even faster by now, than a Gepard could destroy them, back 30 years ago. Drones and such are slow in comparison.

@@dontshanonau1335 i’m not a military expert, but how is securing a position not the same thing as fortifying it? I assumed securing a position in a military context means setting up barbed wire, digging trenches, establishing lookout posts etc.?
@@franzoloranzo7302 I think secure in that context could also mean "clear out" (of hostile elements) and not necessarily fortify it after but I guess it's somewhat contextual.

the amount of times i almost cancel my 4000 or 12000lbs drop but then some spaa 5kms away gives me the perfect "drop here" tracer signal DESPITE me telling in chat "dont shoot me from 5km away" never ceases to amaze and amuse me
I think the reason targets above you seem harder to hit is because the shells are moving much more in line with gravity than they are when you're firing at a 25-45 degree angle. So they're going to be moving slower aren't dropping nearly as much, both of which affect where you need to aim.

Spookston somehow having body language and sign language a t-55 to go somewhere else is genuinely amazing considering how deaf and unresponsive the majority of players are XD
The one takeaway I learned when playing AA was to always wait until you were guaranteed to hit them. Even if non critically. Do t mindlessly shoot in the void. Not only does it never hit, but it also gives away your position making you less likely to successfully ambush the pilot in future engagements. Wirblewind went from ok to devastating real fast when I changed my strategy to this.

if you like the gepard you will love the pgz09 since it is lighter, has 800bhp, gen2 thermals, laser rangefinder, irst and a better search radar and tracking radar and faster turret traverse. it has the same guns but much less gun depression

Attempt 34 Challenge: For high tier support a nations MBT with its respective APC/IFV counterpart (ie Abrams/Bradley, T90/BMP2M, etc.) Challenge is keeping the other player alive and supporting it without stealing kills (breaking barrels, tracking, repairing, etc) it being a random should help make it interesting.
I wish Gaijin would add the real ItPsv 90 (the same turret on a T-55AM chassis). the 90 in the name signifies 1990 as the year of adoption and Finland bought its first Leopard 2A4s in 2002. what we have in the game now is the successor from 2015 (the same turrets moved onto a Leopard 2A4 chassis after original ItPsv 90 was put into storage).
before the Leopard 2A4s Finland used T-55Ms in conjunction with T-72M1s, since the T-55Ms had better APFSDS ammunition purchased from Mecar and the Russians wouldn't sell better ammunition for the T-72M1s. some T-55s were in service even after the T-72M1s were retired, since they were used for mine clearing.
Day 77 You should play a tank with hydropneumatic suspension (recommend the MBT-70) But the catch is you have to drop the suspension as low as it can go for the whole match.

I ended up adopting a stray cat that just came up to me on my porch while I was reading a book one evening. He kept coming back and doesn't belong to anybody else, so he just lives inside with me now.

He's mostly a sweet guy; he crawled under my covers and bit my knee at 3am today for no discernable reason. It startled me awake and I yelled a bit, just to hear "MYAAA" under my blankets. During a visiting day in a Belgian military base in Koksijde, there were multiple older tanks and military vehicles being displayed, but the one thing that instantly stood out was the Gepard. It's massive and so much cooler in real life. There was a miltary museum there aswell with a see-through acryllic mock-up of a Gepard autocannon. Absolutely insane that those autocannons can spit out such a high rate of fire. I took epic pics and had an amazing day.

Taking down helicopter is harder than a light vehicle, is mostly because you hit mostly empty compartments, since mostly helicopter is a flying shell that has nothing inside 40% of the whole body, so you shoot through it rather than the components or pilots, and even bouncing shrapnel inside doesn't hit anything since there's nothing to hit, but it can shred a small piece off.
At first it didn't made sense to me as well, but when you think about it, then it makes.

theres a tank museum in north queensland here in australia that i follow and they have a gepard and a funny fact they mentioned in one of their videos is that if you want to change belts or ammo or whatever from say anti air to anti armor someone needs to climb outside the turret and flip a little switch on the side of the tank theres apparently no way to do it from inside the vehicle itself lol
As a French main I personally hated this thing when I was in the BR ranges it was prevalent- most of the tanks are so lightly armored that a Gepard shreds them almost anywhere, it feels like. This one SPAA became my most hated vehicle by a very, very wide margin

1-2km for stuff like the Gepard, itPSV90, etc. that have radar but no proxy. Helicopters you can get out to 3 or maybe 3.5 if they are just hovering over their base lobbing ATGMs. Anything more than that is just an official notification to the enemy that you exist.
The same thing but actually better is the Type 87 SPAAG, you get a radar that can detect planes at 40km and IRST that you can use even when the radar is inactive

Gepard's default belt can pen ANY MBT from the side, and APDS can go through the front and side of even the highest MBTs

Late model Gepard tanks used F-APDS belts for their primary anti-air ammo. No AHEAD or HE-VT, but you got huge 15mm hollow point APDS instead.
12:10 Another quick tip when playing SPAA, is to never sit in one spot. Always shoot and move, relocating your position so it makes it harder for the enemy team to backtrack your position. "Shoot and scoot" is what we call it in the military.
The only downside is that the cannons are spaced like 2 meters apart, making it difficult to accurately hit close-range targets.
You don’t need to raise the radar to lock on this vehicle.
Also, the radar range being limited will make them pop up on the top, but not in the radar screen and it won’t let you lock.

It's insane how radar SPAAs can be a game changer. If one team has players with radar SPAAs and the other doesn't, you basically have one team that gets to have CAS and one team that gets to get CAS'd.

I love how this type of SPAAs can fold it's radar like a cat folding ears when hunting. Very cute vehicles.

You should play the saddest high tier SPAA next. Sidam 25. you only get 600 rounds of pure HE which auto detonate at 2km and 60 rounds of AP.
