That makes me happy to see someone helping the deer shed it's velvet. I hate watching them try to shed it off by themselves, it looks so uncomfortable and frustrating.
@@ccgb92 how is that anthropomorphizing? I'm using those terms to describe something to you, you're a human right? Who also speaks and understands English.
I scrolled down hoping to clarify with people that this is a natural process and they eat the velvet for nutrients, but you all beat me to the punch! It's good to see so many people who know about this process.
@T_Mac00 No, they do eat it by choice. It’s been documented that deer will eat the dangling shed if it’s close enough to their mouth that they can reach it. This is just normal behavior.

I haven’t looked into it since I literally just found out about people consuming velvet product... but why do people do it? It looks like the deer eats it themselves for the nutrients. On a side note, hope it feels satisfying for the deer. Like an itch or an irritating scab being shed.
It is, i watched a deer trying to shed a piece for about 10 minutes. When he finally got it stuck against the brush the right way and was scraping it his legs were bouncing just the way a dogs does when it gets the right spot. I could almost feel the relief myself :)
hey, anyone has a playlist of people helping deers or moose to shed their antlers? All the videos I see are just recordings of deers and moose trying to shed it by themselves
Yep in the wilderness the bucks will work to rub the velvet off, often on low hanging trees branches or anything else that can help the velvet come off. After the deer will be seen nibbling and licking the velvet for the nutrition benefits.
You should wear a face visor and a helmet whilst near to them horns. At an animal rescue place someone did something similar and the deer moved and impaled the persons eye.
Can you eat those Velvet pieces instead of them? You helped them so you deserve some kind of retribution or treats. I will not help them sheds if not being paid.
The velvet supplies blood and nutrients to help grow the bone (antlers). When the antlers are done growing, there is no need for the velvet anymore. So the velvet starts to fall off.
@@sebman6031 Go handle rotting flesh then. That’s basically what velvet is at this point. When you’re blowing out of both ends, come back and post the same thing.
It's like skin that covers the antlers until they finish and it helps them grow. The Cuticles on our fingers sort of do the same thing to help our nails grow.
The velvet (the stuff she's pulling off) is a type of skin packed with blood vessels that deliver lots of blood and nutrients and oxygen to the antlers to fuel their annual growth.
In the wild, as you get close to the rut (mating season) a Buck's body will sense the sesonal change in daylight and begin producing more testosterone. This triggers the velvet to die and dry up like an old scab or dead skin. The Buck will then forcibly scrap the shed from his antlers on a convenient tree or bush and consume it. This serves dual purposes: 1) it erases a source of scent, allowing them to evade predation and 2) it's a natural source of residual nutrition (just as a Doe eats the placental remains), a lot of energy goes into growing those antlers every year - in peak season sometimes growing by as much as an inch or more a day. (Edited b/c autocorrect is a $#@*!)

True enough..the velvet has nutrients in it.. but it looks weird as hell to see an animal eating itself.
@@ImTheMan78 lol same I agree. It’s weird but makes sense.

Imagine finally able to scratch that spot that was bothering the crap out of you. This is basically was deer go through every spring.
The velvet contains protein supplies the antler & deers are aware of it tgat's why they eat it.

I would literally pay to have the chance to take the velvet off😩😩😩
Me too. It is so satisfying to see it coming off, specially when you know how much it bothers deers
I can’t explain how satisfyng this is to me

How does the deer know if the velvet coverings isn't fully off?
It itches very badly
Agghhhhh!! The velvet at this stage is basically rotting tissue, and smells horrid! Nasty AF.

It has nutrients in it, deer eat it to gain back the nutrients
