Friday Reads: I couldn’t stand The Mystery of the Yellow Room (no spoilers)

- Happy Friday, Booktube! Sadly The Mystery of the Yellow Room was not a happy reading occasion! If you've read anything by Gaston Leroux (Apologies for my terrible French in this video! Desolee!), I'd love to hear your thoughts about what you read! Does his writing improve over time? Do you think the comparisons between Leroux and Arthur Conan Doyle and Edgar Allan Poe are fair? Is he a better writer than they are? Also, I promise I did not commit any violence to this book. It is still in like new condition and hopefully on it's way to a Little Free Library!
What are you reading? Anything for Victober? I love engaging with you in the Comments section, but I understand if you don't feel comfortable leaving a comment. You can always leave an emoji or give this video a thumbs up! I appreciate it!
While this isn't a Victober read, I did mention the hosts of Victober in my video and they are:
@katiejlumsden
@katehowereads
@BlatantlyBookish
@scallydandlingaboutthebook2711
Also, I'm currently buddy reading Uncle Silas by Joseph Sheridan LeFanu with Jo and @BernasBookishAdventures I feel certain it's going to be a better book!
Thanks to the many people who comment on and support this channel in many different ways!

Hey Kelly...I've never read The Mystery of the Yellow Room, but I certainly found your review entertaining! Have a great weekend!
@@awebofstories Happy reading! 💛
Hi Kelly, I dnf Bleak house for now hopefully I will return to it next year. For Victober I am reading Ruth by Elizabeth Gaskell and liking it so far.
Hope you have a great weekend and happy reading 💛
@@charmainesaliba5546 So sorry about Bleak House, but I am glad you found something else you enjoy! I’ve not read Ruth, but I look forward to your thoughts! Be kind to yourself. 💛
I don't think I'll be reading this one anytime soon, but your review was enjoyable.
@@RyanHReviews Thanks Ryan! 😃💛
Hi Kelly. I still have one more Shaketember video coming up this weekend. Thank you so much for hosting! 😊
@@BookChatWithPat8668 That’s something to look forward to! Thanks Pat! 💛
@@booksimnotreading I just got off track first by my Ireland trip and then because I came home really sick. Just getting back to work here now!
God's nightgown Kelly I couldn't help but think about inspector clouseau from the Pink Panther when you described the book. I have watched a great production of the Phantom of the Opera. So there is a small part of me that is curious but it's on Project Gutenberg. I'm glad you're feeling better. I finished Joe Country 4.5 stars and am now about to start Winton's new book. He is touring everywhere in Australia at the moment but I'm trying to avoid any interviews to avoid spoilers. Go well Kelly.
@@nathanfoung2347 Hello Nathan! Have you ever seen him speak before? And God’s Nightgown are you almost done with the Slough House series??? I really want to talk to you when we’ve both seen all of the Spook Street season of Slow Horses! Be well, friend. 💛
Oof, Yellow Room sounds very frustrating. I hate when mysteries don’t play fair like that! (Funnily enough, the book I’m currently reading - Maskerade by Terry Pratchett - parodies the Phantom of the Opera!)
You’re right about Conan Doyle, most of the stories are told by Watson. There’s a couple of exceptions, but it’s usually Watson. 💜
@@genteelblackhole That’s so funny that you are reading a parody of Phantom of the Opera! 😂 Hope you have a great weekend! 💛
Hi Kelly, glad your feeling better!! September really got away from me, I still need to put up my Shaketember video 😕 I kind of didn't manage my challenges....hey ho silly life getting in the way!! I came across Jennifer Brooks after her passing, her content was amazing, and I have binge watched her videos, she had an amazing classics collection!! It's sad we lost 2 BookTubers this year!! I'm currently reading Lark Rise to Candleford as a challenge....hoping I do better with this challeng, lol!! Have a lovely weekend and enjoy Uncle Sillas, I may have to look for this!!xx
@@sjmsutherland Samantha, don’t pit too much pressure on yourself dear! Booktube is for fun! And most events will return the next year. Happy reading! 💛
I just bought The Mystery of the Yellow Room - d'oh!
@@royreadsanything Oh! I hope you didn’t pay too much! Will you promise to tell me what you think when you’ve read it? 😃💛
Thanks for the review Kelly. I reviewed (and spoiled) a terrible book this week too
@@JamesRuchala Oh, bad book reviews for us both! That must mean there’s a five-star book in our futures! 💛
✌️🙂
@@AlbertTheConjugator 💛😃
Happy Friday, Kelly! Well you made your case for why the book was so unappealing to you. 🙃 Oddly, if I knew nothing of it and saw it in a shop, the cover would actually have compelled m to pick it up, so you saved me the trouble. 🙂 Hope October's a better month your way all around. It's my personal favorite. Mentioning Poe, I have some of him lined up to read for the season. Lovely weekend your way. -Carm & a snoozy Rocky
@@gorvo31 Carm and Rocky, are the Halloween decorations out? I am hoping to get mine out today! 🎃 Happy reading! 💛
@@booksimnotreading Yes, all decked-out and well underway. "Code Orange" as a friend of mine says. 🎃🍁
I glanced quickly and at first thought, "She hated The Yellow Wallpaper? I'm surprised!" Haha, my bad.
@@ButOneThingIsNeedful I LOVE The Yellow Wallpaper! I still have my copy from college. 💛
This is on my TBR for December. 🤣
@@colonelmustardinthelibrary Really? I can’t tell with that emoji! I hope you enjoy it, and I look forward to hearing what you think! 💛
Hello Kelly. I once refused to read the last four pages of a book, it annoyed me so much I realised that no possible conclusion would make me care, even a little bit. I wasn't impressed. It seems to be a popular book but I thought I had simply wasted my time. I had carrying on hoping it would improve. 'Sunk cost' I would imagine. I rarely DNF but if I do, it will happen within the first quarter these days
@@angiejones5918 My goodness, Angie, what book was that? 😂💛
@@booksimnotreading Night Circus
@@angiejones5918 😂😂😂 I think my husband read that book and hated it too! 😂😂😂
I am sorry that ol' Gaston served you up a clunker! On to better things! BTW, I'll be starting the Judi Dench book this coming week and I will let you know what I think of it.
@@binglamb2176 Oh, I look forward to hearing your thoughts on the Judi Dench book! Happy reading! 💛
Thank you for the review. Is there a Victorian trope for meandering stories with a luke-warm payoff? I really like your list of all the complex plot threads. People up on ladders at night sounds like a good premise for a music video. For Victober I am trying _The Chronicle of Clamendy_ by Arthur Machen. I've heard it's sort of like _Canterbury Tales_. Not sure if I will like it, but it begins with an ode to beer. I like that!
@@ChristopherEvenstar Hi Christopher! Thank you so much for watching and commenting! I agree with your assessment about the ladders at night should be in music videos instead! I hope your reading goes well this weekend! 💛
I have heard that sometimes mystery readers will read the last chapter or two first, then read through in order to see if they can pick up the clues. I have not done this myself.
@@Montie-Adkins I could never do that! 😂😂😂 Happy reading! 💛
Thank you for taking one for the team so we can know to avoid this mystery. I dnf a lot, but I probably would have finished this one since it is short. Or I might have skipped to the end to see the solution. Sorry you disliked it so much and I hope you have a better experience with Uncle Silas.
@@LaurieInTexas I hope you are reading something great at the moment! I am happy to take one for the team now and then! Sometimes the team disagrees though. 😂 Have a great weekend! 💛
Well at least it was short 😉! I’m assuming you won’t be picking up The Phantom of the Opera anytime soon 😉
@@josmith5992 You are correct! 💛
A smug Frenchman? Quelle surprise!
@@AaronReadABook Aaron, I love the French! 🇫🇷
Omg 😂
👋
@@tibbarasden 💛😃
Thanks for sharing - I will not be reading this. 😂 You’re right about Sherlock Holmes. Watson telling the story feels natural because he’s part of the story and the premise is that he’s publishing those stories. I’m not a big fan of the tortured premise of the third-hand account; it’s rarely done well. I hope your next read is more enjoyable!! ❤
@@Ms-Peepers-Reading-Corner Uncle Silas is already more enjoyable (and scary!) than The Mystery of the Yellow Room! I hope you are reading something great at the moment! 💛
@@booksimnotreading I’ll have to try that one! I’ve got a few good books going at the moment - the front runner is The White Lioness by Henning Mankell.
@@Ms-Peepers-Reading-Corner Ah, a Wallander fan! I need to get back to that series. I was reading one a year and then I slipped off the wagon. Henning Mankell is excellent though!
I don’t know, it sounds like it might be time to read _The Perfume of the Lady in Black._ 😂 Just kidding! I’m surprised you decided to inflict it upon some random stranger at the book box….
@@davidnovakreadspoetry It won’t be worth anything at the used book store … should I burn it or throw it away? Maybe some needs to fill some book shelves for selling their house? I don’t know what the answer is. 💛
I think this book is the one you most disliked on any of your videos that I watched. Love the thumbnail.
I recently read a couple of Agatha Christie books that I really liked - The Murder at the Vicarage and The Murder of Roger Ackroyd. This despite the fact that I am not really a mystery fan
@@stuartgriffin1001 Glad you liked the thumbnail! I think it’s great you are enjoying books outside what you typically read! This is one of the great things about Booktube! Happy reading! 💛
Oh dear...I hate complicated books like this. I'm reading the original Phantom of the Opera for my RL Book Club discussion this month. I've never seen the musical and only vaguely remember the old movie. I hope Phantom is better than the one you read.😧
@@kathleencraine7335 OH MY GOD! You are actually reading Phantom of the Opera with a book club?!?! That’s so crazy. Kathleen, dear, you must tell me all about it! Because maybe he got better as a writer? It does happen! Promise you will tell me what you and the book club think about the book! Please? 💛👻
Ugh. How annoying. Well, at least it was short. Happy Friday!
@@GinaStanyerBooks That is truly something to be grateful for! Happy reading! 💛😃
I'm curious if your mom liked the book or not. Sounds like one that I would not enjoy and probably would DNF.
@@mariasmiles68 I don’t think she ever read it or if she did she has no memory of it! Happy reading! 💛
It seems like the main character being arrogant, smug and a brat sounds like a typical 18 yr old to me.😂
@@vesch5083 Fair point! Thanks for watching and commenting! 💛
