  • Eclipse #2 Cocktail 2 Ways - Rum & Chartreuse Welcome Friends! Welcome back to cocktails after dark where I am exploring different cocktails and mixing
    them in different ways to try and find out what I like. Hopefully you're getting something out of it too.
    Today we're going to do a cocktail recipe from 1934 called the ‘Eclipse Number Two Cocktail’ and it is rum, chartreuse, and lemon juice. The recipe is a little ambiguous, it calls for a light Cuban rum or just a brown rum so today I'm going to use Havana Club and this Angostura 1919 Rum.
    Ingredients:
    1 1/3 oz light Cuban rum or brown rum
    ⅔ oz green Chartreuse
    ⅔ oz lemon juice
    Method:
    Shake with ice and strain into a cocktail glass.
    Garnish with a Maraschino cherry.

    Thanks for watching Everyone! As always the recipe is in ^^^The Description Box^^^ *What's your Favourite Rum & Rum Cocktail?*

      My favorite rum cocktail is probably the Jungle Bird. Having said that, my understanding of your palate suggests you might enjoy a Lost Plane. My go-to for aged rum is Zaya, but I often mix it up. Lately I've been enjoying a Barbados rum called 896 which has notes of vanilla and caramel.
      LOST PLANE
      3/4 oz - Aged Rum
      3/4 oz - Amaro Montenegro
      3/4 oz - Aperol
      3/4 oz - Lemon Juice
      Garnish with a twist of lemon

      Favorite rum over ice Diplomatico Reserva... Favorite rum cocktail a proper mojito made with J. Wray and Nephew white overproof.

      Try using Red Rum it's a cheap fruity kind of rum and it's pretty good for a discount rum.

    I've watched enough of these now that I can tell before Glen says a word if he likes/dislikes a cocktail. Really loved the "NOPE" in this one :)

    Dark & stormy is my favourite rum cocktail on a sunny day, in winter I love a rum old fashioned.

      I may have to try rum old fashioneds. I used to like brandy old fashioneds until a night of unwise decisions involving taking shots directly from the bottle of brandy.
      But it was New Years, a house warming party, a room mates birthday and my own was within a couple days. Oh and I lived in Wisconsin.

    Despite your warning, I tried to make this with the 1919. I tasted it before shaking and tried adding 2/3oz of simple syrup, but it still needed something else. About 6 Oz of pineapple juice later, it was a very nice Chartreuse swizzle :)

    Just because I like Havana Club I would have picked it anyway. You went back twice to it so I knew you liked it more. You said it yourself the recipe called for Cuban Rum. As for my favorite rum drink Mai tai always.😌

    Been watching the Chartreuse vids for a while now. Looked into buying a bottle in my local liquor store. After seeing it goes for $65, I'm going quote Glen and say "NOPE"... LOL

      It's about $35 CAD in Ontario where Glen is. Not sure why it's so expensive in some countries!

    • @ChristopherOdegard
      @ChristopherOdegard 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's usually $45 or so in Minneapolis. Keep looking, you might find it somewhere near you at a lower price. Believe me, it is definitely worth it. It's complex, interesting, and there are no substitutes. I think it's delicious.

      Last Word! Also, Chartreuse swizzle (I only use about 1/2 Oz chartreuse and add some rum).

      About $40 in St Louis. Look for the yellow chartreuse as well its softer and amazing on ice

    Better for us to have you offer interesting suggestions, even if the don't work out. Hey, we don't have bottles of ingredients left over to groan about!

    Based on the flavors you're working with there, the Angostura 7 year might me more appropriate for that cocktail because its a similar profile to the Queen's Park Swizzle which is a trini version of a Caipirinha in which the Angostura 7 is the rum of choice.

    • @jeremyglebderg6114
      @jeremyglebderg6114 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It also has enough ango in it to dye it brown! Actually, a generous helping of angostura bitter might really help this cocktail.

  • @eatahfood

    If you like the 1919, you will really enjoy the Angostura 1787, glad to see Trini rum featured on the channel! :)

      @@Tmanaz480 You likely can. For years this Rum was labeled - Product of Cuba. When Trump changed the import laws for Cuba they labeled it as - Product of Honduras I believe and in reality it was always a product of Honduras. Go Figure. Perhaps nothing is imported from Cuba these days, not sure

    Maybe this cocktail requires a rum that isn’t very complex on its own? So the liqueur can shine through... especially one that herbal. Perhaps maybe it could use a little simple syrup to balance it out? Definitely an interesting daisy though.

    Just goes to show even if the recipe is in print does not mean it’s good. Wonder if lime would make it better, daiquiri. I’ll still try it thanks for sharing.

    maybe try the same cocktail but swap out a light rum for the variety of rums that you used this time? but then that would possibly turn out worse.

  • @SuperLQQK
    @SuperLQQK 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I wonder if this cocktail would be any better with the addition of simple or gum (gomme) syrup?

    • @jeremyglebderg6114
      @jeremyglebderg6114 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      1/2 Oz of simple balances it, but not really better. It's missing depth. It's nowhere near a Last Word for example, which has the maraschino and extra flavours from the Gin to round it out. It seems like it was a step on the road to better cocktails.

    Try this one again with a younger french style rum/rhum agricole. Like Neisson. The vanilla from the oaking process won't play well with green chartruese. Yellow, yes; green, no.
    French rums have a tendency to play more grassy and vegetal, more akin to vegetal notes you get from tequila. Another idea would be Cachaça, because again, that vegetal note cachaça brings would work well.
    Spanish rums and Jamaican runs won't play well in this cocktail.

      Yeah - Just trying the recipes as written, to see what happens. A Rhum we tried after filming was better, but I'm still not sold.

  • @Hargiwald

    Would probably have tried it with something lightly aged, something like Plantation 3 Star. If still out of balance, try a touch of simple syrup.

      Also, never heard of this cocktail before, and I can't really find any info about it online. If the recipe doesn't clarify which Chartreuse, the yellow kind might make for a softer/sweeter drink.

    Yeah, angostura 1919 really tastes like book leather, when mixed with some ingredients.

    That seems like a drink to use bourbon in instead of the rum.

    • @GlenAndFriendsCooking

      Maybe, who knows why the originator of this recipe chose Cuban rum? Maybe these flavours were in vogue in 1934?
