I sure wish I could find an old 70s type ab - amplifier to have you rebuild. I go to goodwill all the time but the older amplifiers and receivers dont never make it to the public. Somewhere down the line an employee or shipping person always scarfes them up before they even make it to a store to be resold back to the public. It's a shame really.
I would love to have an older Pioneer, Sansui, or Marantz.

3000 hours? At a rated temperature yes, at lower temps they last much longer. 3000 hours is only 125 days of continuous usage...
And when you look at the fine details... you'll see it is a hack job.
Unfortunately people delete their stupid answer when you correct them. Somebody told the large caps would only last 3000 hours...

This is the time period when amplifiers were built really good and solid. I have an old PV 1.3 k I recently rebuilt from the ground up took me about 2 weeks to rebuild it because of all the parts I had to order. And I love this amp.Weighs 100 lb though 😁✌️

... in the live sound business it's not hard to find speaker systems to handle major power like this. Quite often it's several speaker cabinets, which is why these amps are rated down to 2 ohms. (4 cabinets at 8 ohms each) Oh, and in professional use they are seldom driven to full power so likely run all day at 50% output.

You removed all the main caps but did not test for leakage, I'm amazed that all were perfect, but if you did not test them you would never know. I am also amazed that no tests were made on the complete re working, no voltage, QI or anything, just put it all together and it worked!! it's a miracle.

yes it would work, but because the voltages arent tested you can not get it to sound anywhere near as good as it could be. I had a sony amp with a bad transistor though everything else appeared fine after rebuild so changed transistor was amazed the difference it made, it was about by about 2 volts but after swapping it reduced the audio output a little but made the unit so much more sensitive to audio the only problem was it then amplified noise allready present which was hardly noticeable before but the fidelity improvement was amazing.
I wouldn't wish this amp on my worst enemy. :)))))

Those caps are trashed. Sure they will pass a simple test with a VM but that’s no way to test a cap. Plus they can go at any minute at that age. This is like taking a 1970 car, hosing off the engine, putting in two new plugs and a set of wires, then spending $199 on the paint job. It might last years, it might not make it home, but it looked kinda nice.

This really amazing 😉, I remember back in the day when in the USA 🇺🇸 in every single neighborhood there were people that used to do this kind of things for hobby, nowadays the only thing we have are a lot of looser sitting watching someone else videos and willing to thumb down and criticize the people that actually create and fix things with whatever resources they have available. We have become a society of criticism where nothing lately is being created, only a bunch of stubborns ,self centered with not desires or creativity, just waiting for the next Black Friday to get in line and spend time and money.

Nowadays most are smds and you need a different set of tools to trouble shoot. No transformer nowadys..The working is different. Howevet old equipment like peAvey is easy to repair.
I also in service & repair line. You open up the amp...The componets are so tiny. There is no marking or the type on the smd device unless you have the schematic. Some manufacturer dont supply schematic. They ask you to send the amp back to them. .To me, it is ridiculous as it is half globe away of travel. The other solution is find which board is faulty and change that particular board. Problem arise there is only one big mother board and everything is in it. Change mother board cost us 2/3 price of amp. Better change a new one!. Out goes the amp to the dustbin!...
You have zero clue what you are talking about, even less than zero. This video shows how NOT to repair electronics by butchering a chinese knockoff amp (its not a Peavey at all) and create a DEATH TRAP. Maybe in 3rd world countries they dont care about safety but in Europe or US you'd get fined or jailed for such repair if it was for a customer.

Restaurant made vile, only appearance matters. This is what Chinese refreshed equipment looks like. The capacitors were removed, their capacity and Esr were not checked. No sleeper current set and some other remarks. If the amplifier is to work, there is no guarantee after such restoration. It looks nice and that's it.
I learned a lot about how not to do things :P

There's probably no subterfuge going on with the resto' eventually working, but if you look closely at the cable connectivity from the power amp to the 1U unit on top of the amp (which could be a line mixer/amp?) that set up doesn't seem workable.
It's probably a 'Serving Suggestion' illustration - we just have to believe in it......
Just like any commercial advertising of desirable & costly goods shown in the media,
where reality is low on the list .....

That was a lot of work, and while I might question some of your techniques, you have a well working amplifier for the price of a couple of FETs and a lot of elbow grease. Very nice.

I've always been aware that the over cautious methods of Amateur Electronics people are usually alien to the Professional repairers ethos of quick dodges to get a repair done as fast as possible, to avoid Customer dissatisfaction of time taken, possibly resulting in non payment for work done.
It happens in most areas of basic Engineering where repairs or servicing have a time-v-result conflict - some effective dodges sound like horror stories or criminal acts, but you'll be unaware!
Social Media vids featuring quick dodges with a working result are really just showing what fixers have always done - but previously out of sight of an unsuspecting customer.
It's never been my style, but people always moan about how long it takes to fix things "properly".

Very skilled with the 100watt soldering gun. It's easy to lift the foil off the circuit board with too much heat. Glad you remembered where all those wires went. I was lost.
As someone who does amplifier repairs and restorations, this video makes me cringe.

Capacitor board...the way he picked up and worked with it, surprised he didn't ruin it.
also he glued the caps! what if a cap breaks? how can you change it? he didn't even measure them right!

Nice work! Although, it's a little bit doubtful to me, that where can they find such an abandoned amplifiers? This Peavey isn't cheap, so if I have this, I would repaired when it goes wrong, instead of scrap it...
--like new-- like a car with rolled back odometer and polished paint; all i saw was 2 transistor replacement,all the other 46 are still old,caps too; ( i would have done the same lol).

You don't need to change something that still works fine, doesn't matter if it's old...I have still working electrolytic capacitors (Elna) 45 years old in some japanese amp, I changed just few drained ones, but all others still work good
It would have cost about £160 for the caps and about £150 for the tansistors, you would not get your money back if you replaced all those. Also large electrolytic power caps rarely fail it's usually small ones in switching power supplies that fail due to the operating frequencies. If it ain't broke don't fix it.
So long as the replacement transistors are of spec or slightly better then its fine. If you have a bunch of different types tho, then it will always blow the weakest one first.
Jose, when we rebuild, we change all electrolytic caps and signal path better quality mkp.
Transiastors and reaistors if not burned never have problems
thats a lot of weight, and work for just 2000w. lol its amazing how much power we can fit in the same space these days. (over 20kw)

Когда то такие кондеры было очень трудно достать, настальжи. А усилок очень простой, одни силовики в параллель и больше нехрена, их еще качать нужно чем то.

Did he just throw the electrolytic caps on a DVM cap setting and solder them back in? I would have either replaced them without bothering to test or tested them for ESR and leakage at rated voltage.

Fez um bom trabalho estetico mas Faltou trocar os antigos capacitores de baixa tensao que se deterioram com o tempo e tambem faltou remover a oxidaçao das trilhas que mesmo com o verniz que ele aplicou, com o tempo vai continuar a corrozao por causa do fluxo constante de ar as vezes umido que é movimentado pelo cooler.

Kkkkkk tão bom que começou medindo transistor de saída com multi-test analógico sem levantar os resistores de emissor, não mostrou ele medindo os demais componentes que possam ter uma possível fuga, isso tudo tem que levar em consideração pai, o cara fez um bom trabalho estético, mas fez o que qualquer um faz, nd dms...

Very efficient, fast, restoration - always good to see inside groovy classic gear that once meant business.
Interesting to see an Instant Heat solder Gun used, though the components look tough enough to take it.
Leaving some insulation when snipping wires as a colour-colour reconnection aid is a smart idea.
Am mystified by the final test bench connectivity - looks like spkr/XLR-phono out, into the unit on top?
I'd be inclined to first test a monster amps output into something more disposable than those cute speakers.
Overall, an entertaining mix of good practice & speedy no nonsense methods that get the job done efficiently.
My resto's & repairs are so pedantically OCD that I'd still be getting a notepad + pens ready to make diagrams of wire colours & connections by the time this chaps completed his restoration!

Sądząc po Twojej Fotce jesteśmy w podobnym wieku. Używam lutownicy transformatorowej od 1984 roku, bardzo dobre rozwiązanie, wymagające od czasu do czasu wymiany miedzianego grotu i trochę doświadczenia. Każdy ma swój sposób radzenia z problemami a narzędzia pozwalają im pokonywać trudności.

Ao contrario dos sprays (bem ruins) à venda por aqui, nos paises de 1º mundo, são vendidos sprays de tinta tão resistente quanto pintura automotiva profissional. Tem inclusive, tinta que pode ser aplicada diretamente sobre ferrugem.

Maybe the devices are too robust to suffer from high & instant direct heat?
Instant Heat Solder Guns were always frowned upon as 'amateur plumbing' gear
in the UK Electronics media of my youth, with low-medium heat precision irons the only acceptable path to kit building Nirvarna. (which made soldering to tin shields impossible)
Actually a larger soldering iron heats up the part quicker and shorter. That way the heat strain is less on the part. On most production lines they use a 75w iron for these parts.

Re the criticism about cutting cables. Despite popular opinion this was common practice in the service industry where Large scale disassembly was required. The reason- clear identification for re-assembly, a good aid even when you have a circuit diagram (schematic). I applaud this guy making most of the limited tools available to him.
