Just saw this movie and I loved it, just like Jono it made me cry at the beginning and the end, I agree that it should have been more consistent but I honestly loved it. A 8/10 for me.
I think it would be cool if Disney had some sort of annual competition-where people of all ages could send in story ideas and then get creative credit for the ones Disney makes into movies.
At least this isn't a "live action" remake of an existing movie. Disney, there are two movies that some of us have been begging you to give the live action treatment. Give us Atlantis and Treasure Planet!
This is not where I thought this comment was heading! No more love action remakes full stop. An insult to the company heritage and never as good as the original.
I'm an animator and genuinely have absolutely 0 interest in this movie. Genuinely, if people are looking for impressive visual effects work with appealing, fun, very impressive looking characters, then go watch Sonic 3. Unique character design and art styles will always be more appealing to me than going the full realism route. It's obviously impressive but when it comes to the point where these movies have to go out of their way to find ways to make the characters' faces more emotive when that's not how it would work in real life, then maybe that's a sign that we should be pursuing a different art style.
Except they didn't name Kion in the movie, which made me laugh. I suppose it was to keep the whole Kion/Kopa fan debate away from this movie. Everyone can just imagine their preferred.
"That was perfectly enjoyable if I didn't have to pay $70 for my whole family." This. This is honestly why I've just had so little desire to go to a movie theater these days. Back in the day, if I really wasn't sure, I could just wait for it to come out in the dollar cinema right before home video. But sadly that's not really an option these days. Now it feels like such a big, idk if "financial risk" is the right term I'm looking for, but definitely along the lines of not wanting to waste a lot of money on something I probably won't even enjoy.
Jono here. I'm definitely loving my AMC A-List Stubs membership. $20/month gets me three movies a week (twelve a month) in any format (IMAX, Dolby, etc) and waives my online ticketing fees. Taking my family to the movies is still expensive. But taking just myself is ridiculously cheap.
@CinemaTherapyReviews Nope. In Canada. The only theater company that's available in most places here (from what I can tell) is Cineplex. To put it politely, they're not very good. They take advantage of being most people's only option, sadly.
I pre-ordered the sound track, so I knew most of the lyrics before even going into the theater. One nit pick I had was that only three of the songs felt "Lion King" to me (and one is the opening chant). The rest felt out of place to me. Bit more stage play. I was amused when they didn't name Kiara's little brother, so it felt like they were acknowledging the old fan upheaval over Kopa/Kion.
Nothing and I mean nothing can compel me to watch this movie. They botched the remake of the original and to add insult to injury left out the most badass song of the entire movie. Disney's golden days are over when they began with the remakes.
I watch Pitch Meeting and Honest Trailers to get a laugh about movies I would probably never watch. Now, I watch CT Movie Reviews to get an idea if I actually want to spend money to see them in the theater. Thanks!
No one laughed at ANY of the Timon and Pumbaa jokes/scenes, literally NO ONE But I honestly loved the fact that Mufasa is afraid of water nearly the whole movie, he was traumatized as a child from it and he would do ANYTHING to not deal with it, even going head on with a pride of lions that he knew will off him, but the ending, him swimming up and what happened between him and Taka/Scar; chef’s kiss AND!! The reasoning behind the name Scar, I think it’s pretty neat and it adds something to the two brother’s relationship and how it’s broken after Scar’s betrayal. (I hated how quick the movie was tbh, a lot of the scenes are hecka rushed) Love, a very obsessed Lion King fan 🤣
Their jokes honestly sounded like disney tried to add self-irony but it felt so awkward and weird like when that one friend calls himself ugly and expects someone to argue with him but everyone stays silent.
So, Alan and John, have you two thought of reviewing Peter Jackson’s King Kong? Several days ago, it was the 19th anniversary of the movie and I honestly think it would be not just an awesome movie to review, but also do therapy on it. You two would totally be amazed by this film. Long live the king!
My friend and i are making a running joke whenever one of us apologizes for something, the other says "i forgive you but i cant call you by your name anymore"
I wish they would've made a 2d drawn animated movie like the original. This photorealistic quality of it just makes me not want to watch it. But I guess Disney is too scared to make a drawn movie
Idk guys, I’m coming at this with a very deep love of Lion King, and I can’t bring myself to watch this one. I watched the original movie almost daily as a kid and cried through most of the stage play. With all that, I’m with Jono and just really want Disney to move on!!!!

1. Yes 2. Yes 3. Never thought about it. The first movie, Simba calls him Uncle Scar the entire time and Mufasa calls Scar “brother”. So, yes, I assumed the two had the same parents. Second, Scar overthrows Mufasa to take the crown. From a royalty standpoint, the first born inherits the thrown so, unless there is something different in the lion pride, I assumed Mufasa was the first born. Honestly, I just assumed the Scar was apart of his evil look.
Mufasa wasn't exactly adopted, Taka's father hates him throughout most of his life. Taka's mother referred to him as family, but never exactly referred to him as a son either, so idk. Taka was the one who thought of him as a brother, because he really wanted one

Thank you for pointing out that the starving lion plot point is not resolved. This is the problem with giving animals human emotions, or portraying them as ' fur babies'. Lions hunt gazelles, they eat other animals, it's another way we "pretty up" the animal kingdom so we dont upset children (and sadly adults too). Great Review
I absolutely love 1994 The Lion King. I watched the 2019 remake and I got bored after 20 minutes...This 2024 movie is one of the most stupid unnecessary origin stories ever made so far...If I were in the theaters I will be screaming the entire time to young Mufasa: "your brother will kill you and try to do the same to your son"
I quite liked it honestly, it wasn’t phenomenal but it was good. I wonder what reception it would get if it was released in the following contexts: 1. It was 2D animated 2. It was 2D animated in an era where 2D wasn’t gone 3. It wasn’t coming after the 2019 remake with how that was received
I watched it again today for the second time. The first time, I honestly watched it with a bit of fear, expecting to see where they’d mess it up, but it actually turned out to be entertaining. The second time, I already knew what to expect, so I enjoyed the visuals sound and songs much more (I don't know why but the first time I did find Timon and Pumba a bit annoying. Strangely enough, the second time they didn't bother me at all 🤔). I liked how they presented two cubs with completely different life circumstances, showing how they face challenges in very different ways, only to inevitably clash in the end. It was never going to be as epic as the first one, and I honestly didn’t expect it to be, but I think it’s entertaining enough that I didn’t mind paying to see it twice, especially since it’s been years since I paid to watch a Disney movie in theaters 😅
As much as I'm looking forward to Mufasa: The Lion King, I think the "story within a story" element will be an issue for me. Without even seeing the film, I already appreciate the emotions and expressions on the animals' faces.
I watched Sonic 3 first last night and had a lot of fun! I'm doing Mufasa tonight. UPDATE: Mufasa is okay. Definitely strong from a technical and visual standpoint, but there's definitely problems with the storytelling and songs.
I'm the kind of person who thinks reality looks ugly and really wants to see a different style in animated movies rather than reproducing the bland imperfection of this reality.
I find this kind of CGI animation hits the uncanny valley for me. I'd love to watch a movie prequel to The Lion King! I'd even be happy watching the remake. But "real" animals talking and showing human facial expressions that closely just creeps me out.
I haven’t seen it and don’t plan to, and it sounds like it was going to be exactly what I thought it was: barely passable. I imagine the other main demographic is fans of the Maleficent films that want more spin-offs/origin stories.
I really dislike the “live action” digital animal thing. It doesn’t need to look like lions to tell a story and feels diminished by it. I think, aside from the monetary milking of a proven success, it stems from this very American - and kind of dated outlook that 2-D animation codes as entertainment for small children. Meanwhile those of us (tons of millennials) raised on anime - as Japan not only trusts their children with more complex and mature themes but also uses animation to tell stories definitely not for children - don’t mind animation, nor subtitles. This even seems to invert that in using hyper realism to tell a very simple story for children - hoping to lure adults who scorn 2D animation? To bring the 90’s kids back to theaters with nostalgia but with this weird “this isn’t a cartoon because you’re grown up now! - please watch!” - No one asked for this. The live action inspired-ish remake we liked was Hook. Remakes hit differently when the cast is fully or 99% human … which is why Cinderella LA was good and Beauty and the Beast LA was creepy. The only thing I liked about the Lion King remake - which felt like some hellish MST3K of a nature documentary was John Oliver who has long had this self deprecating thing about looking like a bird proficient at math and sounding so obnoxiously British that hearing him may get your ears colonized. Great voice for Zazu but the movie is so boring to watch. No one asked for this!
Personally, I would not care about it being good or bad if it had just been 2D animation. So many people think animation is for kids and it hurts my soul. I know cgi is technically still animation, but it fools some people well enough to still be a different art form imo.
this movie in my opinon where for long time fans of the original that for decades have been trying to figure out how scar got his scar more backstory to the world it was for us to get answers i havent seen it yet but i hope the answers where good and didnt bring up more that wont be ansered for like 3 years
I’m a diehard Lion King fan but I recognize 2019 was a soulless cash grab. That said? Unless this turned out to be dog crap I would’ve still liked it to some extent. And I don’t think it’s dog crap. The Lion King fandom largely consists of people who have been fans for 30 years and especially fans of spin-off or tie-in material that does get a lot of references in this film, Taka’s name being the biggest one. But I don’t think this movie was really made for them either, it’s different enough that it’s not.
Dear Santa is another movie that has no business being good, but actually has some fantastic moments. Definitely hits the 3 great scenes criteria. Some awesome jokes. Love the criteria of it's a good movie... If I can watch it at home and not spend $70 for my family to see it.
Let us all remember that Lin Manuel Miranda also wrote scuttle butt for the little mermaid...to me nothing can be worse than that song. I will gladly listen to the songs in this movie, even if they're mid, then remember that awful atrocity from not too long ago.
I am most definitely the target audience for this movie. Yes Timone and Pumba felt like they were included just for tokenistic purposes, but I really liked the movie for lots of spoiler reasons I won't get into. ❤ 9/10 would go back to the cinema to watch again litterally the next day, but recognise that it has issues and I am incredibly biased
Timon, pumba, nala, and Simba felt so forced. Kiara made sense but then they undermined her heir to the throne w a new little brother at the end like excuse me???!!? Where did he come from?! Where is Kovu?! Hold on!! Y'all are changing narratives that we as fans enjoyed! Lion king 2 Simbas pride was a great sequel! With a couple reallly good songs!! And they basically were like ... mm. Let's do this way less interesting thing 🥴😒
I adore the OG Lion King movie and loved the second one back when it came out but the "live action" one was such a let down I'm not going to the cinema for this. I'll watch it eventually I'm sure.
Sounds like it didn’t earn the good scenes it had… Gotta disagree (kindly and with a chuckle) with ya, Alan: As a truly “devoted” Lion king fan, can confirm, I wouldn’t touch this movie. 😂 thank you guys for reviewing it and (all the movies in this channel thus far!) (On a positive note: You convinced me to see Wicked despite being very unsure of it.)
It isn't for the truelly dedicated Lion King Fans....I am one and I HATE that they messed with the story line and changed Mufasa and Taka's backstory. I will give them credit that the way the Lions look and emote etc in this film is 1000x better than the first but it's still a hard nope for me. The Lion King is my favourite disney film and I have been obsessed ever since a small child, had all the books, annoyed the heck out of my family watching the movie until the VHS refused to play. I also think the sequel was really good! Simba's Pride is very underated, I know Disney has a bad track record for sequels but that one is definitely worth watching. Taka and Mufasa are biological brothers though, their parents are Ahadi and Uru!! There were books I had as a child called "The Lion King: Six New Adventures" and they had the official Disney logo and copyrights. They had an actual book called the "Tale of Two Brother's" too in this series with both Mufasa and Taka in it who recieves his scar from a Buffalo however in true Disney fashion they created so many inconsistincies and in the animated show "The Lion Guard" a Cobra is the reason for Taka/Scar's scar...now in this film it's Kiros the lion ? I just can't...I refuse to acknowledge this movie as cannon for the Lion King's storyline sorry. Just a hard nope for me. The Lion King means so much to me and seeing it being changed all the time is really frustrating. I will just cherish the original film and childhood books I grew up with instead as well as the sequel. The rest are meh.
I just watched it. I am easily entertained. All I wanted was a fun enjoyable movie. And I got bored. I agree watch movies in the theater. Some movies are just one and done.
We let them know we don’t like things by not giving them our money. I’ll be making my displeasure clear by not seeing this, and instead watching the Ted Lasso Christmas special
I’m just sick to death of Disney recycling through the same IPs. Why they’re allergic to new ideas, I don’t know. What I do know is that these endless, joyless reboots are about 10 lbs of “no” in a 5 lb bag.
i think the most frustrating aspect of these overdone revisits to the Disney classics is that we all know there are so brilliant artists working for that company who have been presenting new stories and ideas, only to be repeatedly shot down because a sure profit matters more to the decision makers.
I can be a cynical move reviewer, but I try to stay positive when watching movies with my Mom who’s a very generous reviewer, but I was surprised that when we left the theater she was the one complaining the most 😂
It had some good parts but the stort didn't give much compared to the first movie. Also some scenes where unnecessarily long when they could have benn shorter. Now to my least favorite point ,the music. Maybe its just me but the lyrics weren't even on a similar scale to the original soundtrack from the 1st movie. It's watchable but I wouldn't recommend this.😅
Meerkat and Lions have similar life spans... how many years are between the lion King and this movie?... warthog life span is almost half that of Lions and Meerkats... so pumba is in his final years in the lion king.
Haven't seen it but from clips and trailers, I assume Timon and Pumba are narrators so the story is told to Simba or to his and Nala's kid so they're not really there with Mufasa(if they are in the same timeline as Mufasa I definitely have so many questions).
this could be a 10/10 writing-wise and i'd never watch it. as someone who's been in the art community since i was a kid, im so tired of the disrespect major corporations have toward 2D art. the cgi doesn't look bad, but it's the principle of the thing. disney's phobia of bright and colorful 2d animation is seriously disheartening. i'd have liked a mufasa backstory, if it felt like i was bring respected as an artist and a person, but disney doesn't have respect for either of those things. i feel like i have to add that i loved the video though 😭 i just don't think we can do anything to convince disney to value original ideas anymore lol
I've said it a million times, but it's sad that Beyonce made a whole ALBUM to accompany the remake and Lin made a new soundtrack for the prequel, rather than Disney hiring them for an animated African musical (with humans).
I loved the movie. I love The Lion King. I cried most of the movie, but I do believe that there were a few weak points. I never really cared about Timon and Pumba before, and their jokes were unnecessary. This movie is also not aplicable to the original 1994 movie. I feel like many of the weak points (and the not eating and Mufasa being a mary sue) is largely because of time constraints. So much was happening constantly. There just wasn't time for good pacing. So I guess that means some rewriting could have been done.
I loved Milele the song sung by Anika Noni Rose! That’s my favorite song in the whole movie! I haven’t actually seen the movie yet but I know I think when I do see it. As for Moana too, I’ve seen it twice in theaters and love it! 8:02
"Visuals and sound" aren't good enough for me, personally. I don't go to watch a movie to look at it and listen, I go to be told a good story. I'd also argue that animals DO emote in their faces - Google 'sad lion cub face' and there's no mistaking the mood from those eyes.
I thought the songs were possibly the most forgettable part of the movie. I didn't care about them at all and they just felt derivative of good Lin Manuel Miranda songs.
I’m a die hard lion king fan, but only the classic. I watch it every year. The first live action was very disappointing. Almost every live action remake is for me. It’s just not it. Classics only ✨
As for Disney movies that are original...hmm...not sure if they need to walk the cultural appropriation tight rope, however the legends of the indigenous nations within the Pacific Northwest have been overlooked, which is disappointing given they have been the longest occupants of the Americas. Or they can even consider the Ojibwe legend of the founding of "Turtle Island" aka the arrival of Indigenous Nations to the Americas is literally a fantastic idea. Let's face it, Pocahontas was just plain romanticized.
"It's not live action. Stop calling it that."
THANK 👏 YOU 👏.

I wonder what reception it would get if it was released in the following contexts:
1. It was 2D animated
2. It was 2D animated in an era where 2D wasn’t gone
3. It wasn’t coming after the 2019 remake with how that was received
I feel like if Sonic 3 and this didn't come out on the same day would have an effect on it too
I liked the animation from regular Lion King series. Especially the first movie. It was a masterpiece.
I love this new channel! Thank you for more Internet Dad content!
What the heck happened to Jono's audio at 8:28
Review Sonic 3!!
I'm the kind of person who thinks reality looks ugly and really wants to see a different style in animated movies rather than reproducing the bland imperfection of this reality.
Comparing it to one of the kid's school play was perfect 😂
Agreed. That was such a great comparison
I imagine the other main demographic is fans of the Maleficent films that want more spin-offs/origin stories.
hi! this question isn't related to this movie but i was wondering if you have seen Queer? if yes - what were your thoughts on it? :)
At least Mads Mikkelsen got a kickass villain song!
P.S. Seeing this with my dad tomorrow, can't wait!
I really want a Sonic 3 review because that movie is a BLAST! Great, balanced review here too on Mufasa.
Will you review Sonic 3?
it was made for me because i’ll watch any lion king media and i’ll love it i loved the 2019 remake and now i loved this one for what they are
the What's Up Doc clip at the start!! Yay!
this movie in my opinon where for long time fans of the original that for decades have been trying to figure out how scar got his scar more backstory to the world it was for us to get answers i havent seen it yet but i hope the answers where good and didnt bring up more that wont be ansered for like 3 years
As a fan, I was honestly never curious or was trying to figure that out. I feel like it really isn't that deep, in my opinion.
Guess it wasn't able to *ROAR* past expectations
Dear Santa is another movie that has no business being good, but actually has some fantastic moments. Definitely hits the 3 great scenes criteria. Some awesome jokes. Love the criteria of it's a good movie... If I can watch it at home and not spend $70 for my family to see it.
I’ve never been this early!
Let us all remember that Lin Manuel Miranda also wrote scuttle butt for the little mermaid...to me nothing can be worse than that song. I will gladly listen to the songs in this movie, even if they're mid, then remember that awful atrocity from not too long ago.
Yeah the extra songs in that movie really reek of "You signed a contract to work for us, now write a song! Any song!".
The unexpected What's Up Doc clip at the beginning really threw me for a loop
As to who this is for, I thought it was interesting that I saw a lot of seniors in the showing I went to.
Thanks for the video
I adore the OG Lion King movie and loved the second one back when it came out but the "live action" one was such a let down I'm not going to the cinema for this. I'll watch it eventually I'm sure.
I loved the movie, the storytelling and the characters. If you love the original Lion King, just give it a chance ❤
Yall should do sonic
This could have been a great movie if they had made it an original story rather than a prequel
Sounds like it didn’t earn the good scenes it had…
Gotta disagree (kindly and with a chuckle) with ya, Alan: As a truly “devoted” Lion king fan, can confirm, I wouldn’t touch this movie. 😂 thank you guys for reviewing it and (all the movies in this channel thus far!)
(On a positive note: You convinced me to see Wicked despite being very unsure of it.)
Speak for yourself. You don't represent every Lion King fan.
I'm pretty sure the books were never canon
Also, Lion Guard is a part of my childhood, and with a little bit of media literacy it's easy to see these are two different continuities
THIS. It's not for the chronically obsessed. I could not stomach it from the sheer amount of character assasination.
I dont hate these "live action" remakes, I just wish they didnt exist.
Yup.
Smart person!!
7:48 BURN!!!!!!!❤
I can be a cynical move reviewer, but I try to stay positive when watching movies with my Mom who’s a very generous reviewer, but I was surprised that when we left the theater she was the one complaining the most 😂
I haven't watched any live action movie from Disney so far. I feel like movies are lacking a lot of quality in general lately
Saw the wrong movie lol.
But I do appreciate you all seeing this so I don't have to yet xD
Do Sonic 3 next, Disney needs to 'live and learn' from this L. PLEEEEEAAAASSSSSSEEEeeEEEeeeeE🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺 pretty please
So glad we didn’t see this.. the level of sound their talking about would have sent my son and daughter to cover their ears and cry
I thought the songs were possibly the most forgettable part of the movie. I didn't care about them at all and they just felt derivative of good Lin Manuel Miranda songs.
7:49 Stop going and paying and watching them on streaming services. So that way, they can see that it bombed, and they can finally move on
I really need a moratorium on Lin-Manuel Miranda for a decade. There are other composers out there, Disney! damn
Heresy!! 🫢
Ouch. I actually loved this movie. I feel like it was leaps above the quality of the first movie (live/no live action).
Nope, even as a devoted Lion King fan, I wouldn't watch this. All I need is the original, that's it😊
I just learned there is a movie called flow coming out, and it's about a cat. Bet its better then mufasa.
ok so for what I get it's basically a tech demo for 3 years old 😂
I’m a die hard lion king fan, but only the classic. I watch it every year. The first live action was very disappointing. Almost every live action remake is for me. It’s just not it. Classics only ✨
Hello! Hard-core Lion King fan here...this movie isn't for us either 😆 Completely ignores the books.
Answer to #3: Stop going to see these unnecessary movies. And keep making videos like this:)
But how did blue ivy do??😂
As for Disney movies that are original...hmm...not sure if they need to walk the cultural appropriation tight rope, however the legends of the indigenous nations within the Pacific Northwest have been overlooked, which is disappointing given they have been the longest occupants of the Americas. Or they can even consider the Ojibwe legend of the founding of "Turtle Island" aka the arrival of Indigenous Nations to the Americas is literally a fantastic idea. Let's face it, Pocahontas was just plain romanticized.
For the first time I disagree with you guys. Other than Timon and Pumba, I thought this movie was awesome
