How to Record Audio with your iPhone - Voice overs, Notes and Dictation

- In this tutorial I show you how to record audio on your iphone using the Voice memo's app.
It's not all that obvious where the app is so I show you how to find it and how to record edit and save down your audio recordings.
This app is ideal for many different types of audio from voice over, narration, meetings and conferences, dictation and even music at a live event.

Enjoy the video straightforward. You’re laid-back And confident personality it was Easy to learn from. Sadly I’m not even sure where the microphone on my phone It is but figuring it will work better out of my OtterBox are removing it for my first try. Love the hoodie!
Great, thanks so much. The mic is at the bottom of the phone and is the one that will be used when recording audio into the Voice Memos app. There is also a small mic on the back camera I believe in most new iPhones when recording videos using the new camera array. I almost forgot about that hoodie. Might dig it out for a new video. I quite like it too.

Good info! I haven't found any way in that app to splice in other recordings so I import the audio files into Rock Band and splice and blend in that app.
Sounds good. Yeah Garage Band can do that too.

Hi.very good video thank u. I have a question though.after I end my recording,it says Home( as name of the recording per default) how can I name the recording with something of my choice?for exemple :
volume 2,Chapter 1.

Thanks for watching. Tap on the file the tap on the three dotted icon that appears next to the control bar. Edit the file and a panel slides up with the name of your file at the top. Tap on the title and edit. Save file down.

I compared a recording with and without the headphones, and the recording without the headphones seemed to be better quality.

Is there any way to record phone calls on an iPhone? I’m in Canada and couldn’t find any apps or ways to record a phone call conversation. Most apps have the record capabilitiesBUT you have to pay for so many credits. Which is not what I’m looking for. Tks.

There are no built in audio filters in the voice memo app. However you can download garage band if you haven't go it already and load up the audio file or even use it to record audio instead of the voice memo app. Then Add a noise gate filter and adjust the slider to reduce the noise in the recording.
Great video! I have a top down table stand I bought to film with my iPhone. Do you know how I can record in the direction I am sitting? So my viewers can see exactly what I am seeing. It is recording upside down. As if my viewers are sitting across from me, looking at me that way.
I don't think you can change the orientation of the display so the only thing I can suggest it to use apple headphones, wired or wireless to record and that way you can position it any way you like and get the same audio.

Hi i have a question
I recorded audio through voice memo when i uploaded my video there is too much echo issue ???can you suggest me any software to clear my voice recording
It's vey hard to get rid of echo after recorded. The echo comes from the room acoustics so the only way to reduce it is to speak closer to the microphone or go into a smaller room. There are some filters you can use on desktop software but none that I have found that actually work on mobile apps. Nicely done, and very helpful. I have a question you may already have covered but here goes: Your recording is saved as Home 1, Home 2, etc. Can I rename my recordings so they make sense to me?
Yes you certainly can. After you complete the recording. Tap on All recordings, tap on the audio file. Then tap on the title until it becomes highlighted, then rename it.
I don’t find utilities folder in the control center?
More info than I needed, simply needed to record a noise fridge was making for my appliance guy
How do you make it into a loop that can play while your iPhone is turned off?

Yes you can do it using iMovie for OSX as you get an option to export a video to MP3 audio file. However iMovie for iOS doesn't give you this option.

You can only really insert after the last recorded section. If you want more sophisticated editing capabilities you may need to use Garage Band.

Hi. Nice video. Would you know a way to record musical notes, say a do, re, mi type scale up and down to an audio file w/o a piano? I was thinking I could find some kind of child toy, and then play it live, using your video idea. But I was hoping for some kind of phone or ipad app that would allow playing notes on the app from say piano keys and record at the same time in the app. Seems like a simple idea, but not finding anything obvious like ths. Good video. It was wanted by allot of people I’d say. One question.. if I’m recording something lengthy like a book or novel and I’ve chosen the lesser quality audio option , how do I keep it small? Even if I record 5 minutes the file is very large. Thanks
You can change the file type in the settings section of iOS. Tap on settings, scroll down and tap on Voice Memos. Tap on Audio Quality. You can choose between Lossless and Compressed. To reduce the file size oaf the recordings, select Compressed.

Yes it is a great app and easy to use for linear recordings. However for the editing you require you will need to use Garage Band which is a free download for your iPhone. There is an audio recorder and once you record your section of audio you can copy and paste it along the timeline.

really nice videos thanks, I have some questions. When you are recording your voice which mic do you use? there are 3 mics on the iphone 11 and is it better to turn recording stereo sound off in camera setting for voice recording? So the voice is more focus on one mic? If so which mic would be? the one at bottom ? the one near front camera? the one on back?

I am using the XR and I am pretty sure it uses the bottom microphone by default I think it would be the same with the 11. As for the stereo option I am not sure it would have an effect on the audio input being used on this app. You could try toggling on and off to see if you notice a difference but not sure it will.

No it doesn't use much battery life at all. I have recorded over an hour at a time and it doesn't go through much battery at all.

I have a question. When I tap on the voice memo app, I don't get a blank screen I get a list of things I can do like Siri and Search and Background App refresh. There is no way forward, no button to push to start the app. I am probably not understanding something. Please help.

Yes I am pretty sure it is unlimited provided there is enough space. I would say you need a few GB free to do this.

Thank you. I got the app for voice memo but I need to make the recording in to an MP3 file. My project is to record my voice get it on MP3 and then put it in a sound holder ( like with build a bear) and put it in a stuffed animal. So another question. If I record my voice and take the file and share with an email to my computer, how do I make it an MP3 to get the sound into the Multi file recordable sound chip. I have links to help me get it on the chip. Just need the previous help. Please help...
You can convert it to MP3 format using the Apple music app on your desktop computer if you you have an Apple computer that is. To do so you need to clip on the top menu of the music app, click on preferences and go to the Files folder. Click on import settings and change it from the default which will be AAC encoder to MP3. Then import the file you recorded out of your iphone into Apple music and it will be converted to MP3. To get it back out of Apple music as and MP3 file you can use just drag it from the app to the desktop.
