    These DIY lightning bug effect Halloween prop glow in the dark fireflies are a super easy DIY lighting effect for any outdoor holiday yard display or indoor decoration. These homemade firefly props are perfect for a Halloween home haunt that is an old haunted swamp, bog, or bayou theme. Inspired by Disneyland Pirates of the Caribbean attraction the glow in the dark props are also perfect for a theater or photo op or backdrop at parties or scenes in a short film or TH-cam video. These lightning bug prop decorations are so easy to make and are such a low cost to produce that one could litter their entire scene with all kinds of these DIY glow in the dark creepy crawlies. We share all the easy steps and material to make these fun Halloween decorations from the construction paper, glow in the dark paint, tape, string, fans, even black lights. What is so cool about the glow in the dark paint is that it charges up all day so it will work even after you turn off the black light bulbs. We compared the cheaper glow in the dark paint with a more expensive wildfire black light glow paint. It was really hard to tell the difference. We also compare using clear scotch tape to electrical tape to see if there was any reflection in the displays. We also see if there is a difference between string vs fishing line or wire. These glow in the dark decorations were so much fun to create we are sure you will enjoy the project as well.

    The blob of glow paint is ingenious and simpler than the usual grain-of-wheat bulb hot glued to a black card. I love that your recent videos try multiple approaches to the same effect and compare them (different kinds of materials, threads, paints, etc.).

      As the designer of the Blue Bayou fireflies, I use a standard green 3mm LED 2.2 volt with 3 volts put through it for the perfect hue of nature.

    As long as you have some outdoor blue solar lights, this effect is 100% better than than even those "magical" solar-powered lights. Not with the flickering in/out or anything, but because they actually BLOW in the breeze so well (and as it flips, it appears the light fades in/out). This is such a good budget alternative!

    This is way easier! I wasted time and money using white pipe cleaners that I trimmed to small pieces and spray painted with glow in the dark. Then I climbed a ladder and wrapped each piece around a twig or leaf. It took freaking forever! Your way is WAY smarter and easier!! TFS!!!

    I made some of these for up coming Halloween and of course, because of the great way you guys explained perfectly how to make them, they turned out great. However, another quote from the movie "Christmas Vacation" comes to my mind. "When is the last time I over did anything?". So I goofed around with the design a little bit. I used black thread but I used black craft foam instead of tape or paper. I added a small length of thread to the bottom of the square of craft foam, then on that thread I put a very light weight (0.2g) fishing sinker called a split shot. This would allow the Lightning Bug to still swing in the breeze, but it would increase the frequency of the spin. It really worked out well.

    I've just been making some of these (by combination of being bored + UK still under lockdown) and I've found black Gaffer tape works best. It'll hold up to rain no problem but because it's a flat/matt cloth tape it doesn't reflect any light at all. Very neat trick overall.

    If you make a tri-fold on the paper. Like a triangle shape looking down on it. You can make multiple dots on it on different sides and it makes a great effect. Also heavy weight fishing line. 30-50lb is great I found out. It spins the best. Plus you can laminate it to make it permanent waterproofed.

    Great ideas guys! The most “high tech” I’ve gotten with making a little light is a Xmas bulb removed from a string of lights with a little flat battery scotch taped to the little wires so it lights up. You could attach that to a string and you can even use a blinking bulb and probably get a firefly effect between that and a fan. I like you version though...way cheaper! :)

      Someone commented below that there is a paint that recharges during the day that you don't need a black light. But the paint we used does or it would only glow for a little bit. Maybe because your in Oregon you may want to pull a black light out. Just make sure you weather proof it.

    I did this exact same thing back in 1992, except I did eyes on the black (using blacklight paint) rather than 'fireflies' that hung on the thread, affected by a hidden, silent fan in the outside bushes ...creating eyes that appeared/disappeared in the trees of a Halloween graveyard...it worked perfectly, as the strings spun, revolved, made the eyes appear/vanish everywhere...;)

    I have a lot of (too much) money invested in the fancy “Firefly Magic” (small company out of Colorado) artificial LED firefly units, which look awesome and very realistic. I believe I even read somewhere that Disney (and several other theme parks) uses them, but I gotta say, the effect y’all achieved using simple items that every haunter has laying around is pretty incredible. I was surprised at how cool the effect turned out.
    I remember years (decades) ago as a kid eating at a Polynesian themed restaurant in San Jose, CA, and seeing “fireflies” made with a tiny bulb (I don’t think green LEDs were even a thing back then) at the end of a semi-rigid and loosely coiled wire, and a small fan hidden in the foliage directed at the bulb & wire to give it some movement. I remember being fascinated by it since fireflies don’t exist pretty much west of around Kansas (except for a species localized in a small area of Arizona), so I never saw them growing up in California or knew what they really looked like until I started traveling years later.
    Awesome video!

      @@HollywoodHaunter I was thinking about hooking up some tiny leds as firefly's, but wasn't sure how to make it blink, Sooo
      I went to utube to get ideas & saw your idea. You are a genius. KISS.
      You can buy “Fairy Lights” on Ebay for less than $2. It will come with 1M (about a yard) of 10 leds attached to a battery holder that holds 3AA batterys or CR2032, or USB. Low voltage = safer for little ones. I bought the USB one because I have a couple of rechargable power packs to charge my phone & they have USB outputs. I also have some really tiny wire from a old transformer that might work as leads for the led. Go online and look up “Fairy Lights” to see what they look like.

    Great low tech idea, when I saw the title of the video I was thinking it would be 3mm leds hung from fi9ne wires, but this idea is actually cooler and a lot easier to do. Thanks again for another great tutorial guys, you're always so creative and cleaver.

    Wicked makers made a video on how they did the LED firefly display and it’s actually really easy.

      Thanks Jaye they did do a great job turned out awesome. If we make some in the future I think we would try and use a lot thinner wire and a power supply instead of the solar idea. It's a fun little project. Thanks for letting us now. 👍

    Instead of glow-in-the-dark glue you might be able to add a little round circle of fluorescent yellow poster board. Just cut a circle of that out and glue it to the black electrical tape. Then it would shine pretty brightly yellow instead of green

    I love this low cost easy idea. How long will the paint glow?

    • @HollywoodHaunter
      @HollywoodHaunter  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      There are still some of the little squares tangled up in the tree branches from this video now and they still glow. We joke about it all the time. 🤣

      @@HollywoodHaunter i actually meant when it gets dark how many hours do they glow.

    • @HollywoodHaunter
      @HollywoodHaunter  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      🤣 We always left a blacklight on them but with no lights like all glow in the dark it would really glow and then fade over time and not be as bright after awhile. lenght of time varied want to say an hour pr so you could always see them but not as bright. Like I mentioned in first comment they are still glowing at night with no light to this day. I'm sure each paint is different.
