Beautiful old Mexican silver coin. 50 new pesos with the child heroes, one of the most sought after by collectors.
Los Niños Héroes were a group of Mexican cadets who died in the Battle of Chapultepec on September 13, 1847 during the American intervention in Mexico.
The subsequent official history, for the first time in 1852 and with greater notoriety in the Porfiriato and in 1947, distorted the facts in different stages for nationalist purposes to highlight them, much of which was erected in the form of a heroic myth.
Since the second half of the 19th century, 6 cadets of the Mexican Army were placed under this name: Agustín Melgar, Fernando Montes de Oca, Francisco Márquez, Juan de la Barrera, Juan Escutia and Vicente Suárez.
The main argument of the historically conformed heroic act rests on the fact that these six cadets and 40 others had received the order from Nicolás Bravo to leave Chapultepec Castle, at that time the headquarters of the Military College, and its surroundings. However, they decided to stay to defend the square against the advance of the United States Army.
