The thing that I liked about this channel, is that sometimes when I saw a new video, I thought 'this sounds important to know', and the best part, oftentimes I was right and I learned a lot!
I’m surprised that it took researchers so long to discover that sadness was apart of temper tantrums. I always remember feeling mostly sad whenever I had a melt down as a kid because my mom wouldn’t buy me a toy or something.
The depression part really hit home. I didn't even realize that it may cause those symptoms I experience along with the ones I know. My guilt can get extremely bad sometimes even when I know better.
As a psychologist that also has depression, guilt is one of the prime psychological symptoms, memory and concentration problems are super common, the general theory is as the video said, the guilt and anxiety just eat at the brains energy. you see a similar effect on memory and concentration in people that struggle with anxiety. Though I do wonder if the study would be linked with social rules and shame, if then maybe antisocial personality types (not to be confused with antisocial personality disorder) would be more prone to depression.

Rumination is definitely my forte! My therapist tells me quit replaying the movie!! How many times do you have to torture yourself! If anyone has chronic depression please get help! Sending love you're way!
My therapist calls it retraumatization. Going through painful experiences over and over on your own, in your own head, with no one there to help or console you, youre re-traumatizing yourself. And I agree, get help, you dont need to go through it alone and you dont shouldnt.
I'm so sad! I hope you guys come back soon!!! Me and my children will be watching on the main channel and on the kids channel. We thank you guys so much for teaching us and helping my kids not just watch how to pull pranks.

as someone with bpd depression and adhd this video really covered all my phycology needs an I actually lured things on each. Family members were misdiagnosed as having ADHD when both have other forms of nuerodivergence *AND N24* which is a circadian rhythm disorder where the cycle is more or less than 24hrs long, 32-40hrs for them. Deal with severe DSPS myself, 6-8hrs behind making 9am feel like the middle of the damn night!
Very good SciShow/Hank and party. Really depression has a lot of symptoms, but it's pretty clear that without mental energy (mana, gamers) there's no patience, less focus, confusion, memory loss, strain. Between that and things like self-guild/rumination people that take up energy that people may have - when someone pushes or tries to push another past what they can handle with these issues, you get secondary things like anger, greater fear, sadness, etc. Sadness secondary? Well when you let people down and don't have energy, or you TRY to be there for people and ultimately let them down by unregulated emotions/behaviors (how can you manage those when you have no energy) well - I think professionals need to start paying attention to their more successful patients to start asking key questions - in the way perhaps people are intrigued and study Daniel Tennant with his great insight on autism. Mmm. Also side note - I think this info on ADHD is excellent and insightful. The comorbidity tween the two starts making a LOT more sense when considered together. Sleep - good sleep - is necessary for a refreshed brain. Period.
I remember reading about a case, where they have tried everything, talking to the kid, distracting them, yelling, you name it. And the kid just wouldnt stop. So a therapist told them to do something completely random they never done before when the kid has a tantrum next time. So next time the kid was having a tantrum, the mom on the spot started dancing. The kid was so confused it stopped them in their tracks lmao
I never threw tantrums when I was little. I knew my sister, step sister and some friends would occasionally have meltdowns, and I remember wondering when I would finally experience whatever these “tantrums” were. I never did, and now at 33 I still have a great deal of patience and control over my emotions, as well as burning anxiety that I keep bottled up and buried deep deep down.
Having worked in food service for almost 8 years. I always look at the number and consider how much I am spending because budget. And know that I should not pay attention to the serving wear. The stock photos of those toddlers lying on the floor and crying in anger killed me 😂 why and how did they make them? Was it morally acceptable? Whatever the answer, I'm glad they exist 😈
I actually have a theory about the human circadian rhythm. I think that we've begun to evolve, as a species, due to many things like electricity, and lack of predators, the need for less, and or different sleep.
As someone with adhd, I can say that my adhd is not caused by my sleeping habits. I can sleep 8 hours or 3 and be absolutely the same. I can go to sleep before midnight or after and it won't change much when it comes to my symptoms.
I had adhd from year 5-12 and my sleeping problems were due to the medication so was the inability to put on weight or muscle. I do not regret it though. The mind of my adhd self doesnt get enough energy is how i describe it. And anything but thinking is prefered. Its a lazyness of the mind only. The medication gave me the energy it needed and i very much enjoyed using my mind as it felt like it had endless resources and no negative draw backs.
"researchers" . . . . or you can just ask a mother who is also a musician . Mirror neurons are so important and incredibly more potent in children, and I can tell you the pitch and decibels of my kids' scream, all the way to their overtone pitches when their voice doubles or quadruples
I think verticle lines look longer because they trick your brain in compensating for depth. Something that is useful every single time we look at everything except for 2d drawings.
I don't think it's that complicated why staying calm does the trick best, and I don't think it's mirror neurons alone. If a tantrum is a threat response mechanism, and the caregiver doesn't respond as though there's a threat, then maybe the threat response is a false alarm. It's not just imitation, but also a calibration. Kids are learning by observation, imitation, and reasoning (even if that reasoning isn't of the structured variety), so I would hypothesize generally that staying calm triggers the process of trying to figure out if they're reacting correctly. I think toddlers are stuck in what adults would feel was a nightmare at times - less power and knowledge than situations require, but a strong desire to be independent. I imagine it must be infuriating.
A lot of glassware is shaped a certain way because they capture and direct the aromas to your nose in certain ways. Tapered curved glasses like a wine glass is a great example for this. Other glassware is designed to control temperature. The stem of a wine glass, for example, allows you to hold your wine without the heat from your hand warming the wine up. Bourbon/whiskey glasses are made from thicker glass for a similar reason. So yeah, there are genuine reasons behind those trends beyond just social norms!
The IQ video, IQ is supposed to find out how well you learn new things and adapt to new stuff. If it's about your "capacity" to learn, then any IQ test with math in it is bogus. And many (if not most) have some sort of math in them.
Theres too much in my brain to go to sleep. Also trauma contributed to my insomnia. I have to take sleep meds now or i dont sleep until my body shuts down. But yeah as a kid i would stay up till like 5 am and get up at 7am for school. But yeah im diagnosed ADHD, CPTSD, MDD, and Anxiety.
I don't have a copy of DSM-V but as I recall from the discussion predating the 5th edition CPTSD was to be defined and subsumed some of the dissociative disorders? I bet DDNOS diagnoses plummeted.
@@disorganizedorg CPTSD isnt in the DSM. Its Complex Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and comes from being in a traumatic situation for years with no escape. Like a child who has to endure abuse because they have no other choice. Dissociation is a common symptom of alot of disorders. But no CPTSD isnt a dissociation disorder.
@@samiballew4609 Oh, OK; I'm outdated; the last I followed such was 2016, prior to DSM-V. Rather a silly question since DSM in all its editions is trash. '“at best, [the DSM is] a dictionary, creating a set of labels and defining each. The weakness is its lack of validity. Unlike our definitions of ischemic heart disease, lymphoma, or AIDS, the DSM diagnoses are based on a consensus about clusters of clinical symptoms, not any objective laboratory measure. In the rest of medicine, this would be equivalent to creating diagnostic systems based on the nature of chest pain or the quality of fever. Indeed, symptom-based diagnosis, once common in other areas of medicine, has been largely replaced in the past half century as we have understood that symptoms alone rarely indicate the best choice of treatment.” Thomas Insel, MD Director, NIMH (2002-2015)
Try taking high doses of vitamin D for a week like between 15,000- 20,000IU and talking calcium and magnesium it helps alot to calm down so you can sleep better and have better mood and vitamin D is also anti-inflammatory
Wasn't there some research showing ppl with high iq also have neural signals travel faster? As in feeling they've thit their big toe quicker than others etc
The wilderness is not a good place for a child's tantrums. Tantrums do exactly what they are meant to do, to draw attention. There is/ has been much study on things that any experienced parent already knows. I wonder how many studies have receive grants for the endeavor. Starting with the basics is a good place... I guess we need a documented foundation to build on for the sake of the field. What will we be if we get to change everything we do not like about our species? Probably extinct. 7:15 Mensa is a thing that reveals a few things about those people who join besides I.Q., which in my mind negates any "advantages" they think they might have.

The ADHD one explains SO MUCH about my childhood.
23:37 is this like the opposite of the false attribution error (a cognitive bias)?
I actually have a theory about the human circadian rhythm.
I think that we've begun to evolve, as a species, due to many things like electricity, and lack of predators, the need for less, and or different sleep.
As someone with adhd, I can say that my adhd is not caused by my sleeping habits. I can sleep 8 hours or 3 and be absolutely the same. I can go to sleep before midnight or after and it won't change much when it comes to my symptoms.
I am missing years of memories. I do get irritable and have crushing guilt. Im diagnosed with Major Depressive Disorder
#1: my mother was always the one throwing tantrums
I had adhd from year 5-12 and my sleeping problems were due to the medication so was the inability to put on weight or muscle. I do not regret it though. The mind of my adhd self doesnt get enough energy is how i describe it. And anything but thinking is prefered. Its a lazyness of the mind only. The medication gave me the energy it needed and i very much enjoyed using my mind as it felt like it had endless resources and no negative draw backs.
Adhd doesn't go away
This video is the first one that I watch from this channel and I definetly enjoyed a lot, and now I discovered that the channel is about to end. :(
"researchers" . . . . or you can just ask a mother who is also a musician .
5:36 his backward shoes... lol I miss my daughters...
I would totally quit my job and work for SciShow Psych 100% if given the opportunity.
Parents, get a spray bottle for your cat and one for your kid. Ermm... Fill them with water, of course. 😂
No. Just no.
What is the “Main Page” and how do I get there?
I imagine it must be infuriating.
nah i hear the word "ADHD" being spoken and my attention is on 100. i cant count money when people are talking near by, but im not dumb by ANY means
That adhd one was very helpful.
I'm am now very sure that I have ADHD.
Or a bad sleep problem.
Aren't there more legitimate reasons why certain drinks are served in certain glassware than just cultural norms?
A lot of glassware is shaped a certain way because they capture and direct the aromas to your nose in certain ways. Tapered curved glasses like a wine glass is a great example for this.
Other glassware is designed to control temperature. The stem of a wine glass, for example, allows you to hold your wine without the heat from your hand warming the wine up. Bourbon/whiskey glasses are made from thicker glass for a similar reason. So yeah, there are genuine reasons behind those trends beyond just social norms!
Because it's fancier?🤷🏼♀️😅
NO NO NO you better return to this channel asap!!
Not me watching this at 11.57PM
FIVE YEARS!!??
I’m crying 😭 why, Hank, why
I'm going to miss learning about the brain from you guys!
THAT BABY IS ADORABLE I AM DEAD!!!
Depression Info at 22:02
If only parents could’ve watched this video 30 yrs ago
What’s the other channel?
The IQ video, IQ is supposed to find out how well you learn new things and adapt to new stuff. If it's about your "capacity" to learn, then any IQ test with math in it is bogus. And many (if not most) have some sort of math in them.
Dang, just when I've sorted out, organised, deleted channels, and Finally turned on notifications. 😒
What? Are you closing all your channels except main?
Indeed, symptom-based diagnosis, once common in other areas of medicine, has been largely replaced in the past half century as we have understood that symptoms alone rarely indicate the best choice of treatment.”

Try taking high doses of vitamin D for a week like between 15,000- 20,000IU and talking calcium and magnesium it helps alot to calm down so you can sleep better and have better mood and vitamin D is also anti-inflammatory
What's the main channel then?
We love you Hank❤
Bigger plates? Now meals have two or three plates!
Adding subtitles/CC would be really appreciated!
Wasn't there some research showing ppl with high iq also have neural signals travel faster? As in feeling they've thit their big toe quicker than others etc
12:23 I have ADHD and I'm watching this at 12:50 AM
Noooo! I can't believe this is happening so soon after i declared my psych major :(
Is it about understaffing or performance?? I'm sure there are plenty of people following the channel that would be willing to help out
Damn I really found this channel right when it died lol
Goodbye, forever. Again lol 😂
Is emotional maturity really maturity. Seems on at ways managing our emotions not our reality . Just ways to feel good
Address Partial OBEPTSD and PLCPTSD! Why is it ignored by the psychological community???
*I don't care that you went away; I care WHY!*
We r not *just* passive viewers.
1. Could've *informed* us of decision making
2. Could've let us *participate* in decisions.
Y'all forgetting frustrated not just anger and sadness 😂
How could these people not see that?
I think they're simplifying; frustration is part of anger
A top question should be, is psychology a science
All : temper tantrum sad and anger
Asian parents : sad and anger can be overcome by danger (raising and aiming slipper to the kid)
