    12:55 !! this. This is something I've noticed when researching German folklore and mythology, not only in old books, but also on the internet. I often had to pause reading or watching a specific video because they felt super nationalistic, eugenic, antisemitic etc. It can sometimes be draining to read some of that stuff. Thank you for reminding people to always critically read these texts.
    I really enjoyed this video so far! Thank you for uploading :)

    The Nordic Animism calendar book is absolutely fantastic. Thank you for the resource recommendations! I will be keeping my eye out for more.
    I would also recommend works by Claude Lecouteux who has written a *lot* on various subjects relevant here with good English translations.

    Most of my heritage is Prussian and Eastern Germany and I'm having trouble trying to find folk magic resources from that area, do you have any ideas?

    I really enjoyed this and appreciate all your hard work and recommendations. I would highly recommend getting the volumes by Jakob Grimm of the Deutsche Mythologie/Germanic Mythology to go along with the Household Tales. Very helpful. It also helps with critical thinking. I can't tell you how many times I've read parts from the various volumes lifted from it word for word in other books that are about mythology, folk beliefs, fairy tales, Paganism, New Age, or Witchcraft. Always with no credit. It also helps when people are trying to back up certain Gods/Goddesses that might be more modern like the debate on Holda. It's going to point you to being more of a smattering of older Goddesses and more of a Medieval thing like what you listed below in your comments. I personally dont get into the whole Gods/Goddess thing but some do so it could be helpful. I haven't gotten the book you mention about Frau Holda because its a book mentioned by a certain Heathen community and I think its more central to their particular belief system. They are a newer branch in the States. I'm aware of them and not a part of them. I haven't heard anything bad about them and i've interacted with them online mostly just to understand them. Plus, as a critical thinker I'm not always fond of the new trend of trying to make a point with various sources from a variety of different cultures as it may or may not always really and truly be something that all of these different cultures would necessarily appreciate themselves. I still see the value in it up to a point. It's all about perspective and intent I suppose. One is supposed to be able to back up an idea. I am an American and there does seem to be this American tendency that because we are the melting pot its almost taken for granted most of us are from multiple cultures and how to deal with that. A lot of people might say that about modern society as a whole as well. Just it is critical for Americans to really be careful due to things like Colonization from European Countries and their politics and agendas of the past, Manifest Destiny ideas , and what was done in regards to the Native Americans and with Slavery and Christian Missions. As someone with a scholarly background it may be valid but its only valid up to a point. There isn't always an agreement amongst the cultures that have had their customs, stories, myths, etc from used as an example that the example given is really something that culture itself would agree on either in part or in whole. www.yumpu.com/en/document/read/11496906/a-brief-introduction-to-the-deities-of-urglaawe-urglaawecom This is the website of one of the groups I'm taking about. It seems to come from the States.

      Personally I have a lot of issues with the Urglaawe movement that you mentioned since it slams together many regional folk beliefs of Germany and pretends like they are all the same thing

    Can you find a reliable place to get the Albertus Magnus book in English? I have come across many fake/fabricated copies and would love to read it. I used to be fluent in German but I do not trust myself after being out of practice for quite a few years to read such book in native language

    I seem to not have be able to find some of the books you’ve mentioned. Any recommendations?

    • @De_Spoekenkyker
      @De_Spoekenkyker  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Depends, if it's the older manuscripts you're unable to find you could specifically look for them in a pdf format (since many of them are super old they're in public domain)
      Idk about the more modern books though since they immediately pop up for me if I search for them

    I am curious about your thought on Frau Holle. I have seen in a much older tiktok you posted that Frau Holle was most likely derived from Frija, the norse cognate to Frigg, I believe you stated. However, I have heard that the man that wrote the book Mother Holle you mentioned in this video as well as in the pagan community in general, they have tried to establish Frau Holle as her own supreme deity, a remnant of not Frija, but Holda? Do you still think she is from Frija, or is she this other deity Holda?

    • @De_Spoekenkyker
      @De_Spoekenkyker  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      There are actually close to zero accounts of a pre-christian deity named Holda. We mostly start getting variations of that name in the medieval and early modern period through christan writing. In my opinion Frau Holle is a folkloric almalgamation of one or multiple pre-christian deities (likely Frija but possibly also deities like Nerthus and more regional deities) aswell as the Zeitgeist of the time in which many of her fairytales originate in. The name Holda, if pagan in origin, could've been a regional deity name or an epithet of more well known deities like Frija.

    Oh ja Gunivortus Goos ist extrem UPG lastig. Hab sein Buch über „Germanische Magie“…. Es ist 99% Runen zusammengemischt mit zeremonieller Magie und anderen modernen Praktiken… und super viel UPG zu den Runen wie Assoziationen mit anderen Praktiken die wie ich finde keinen Sinn ergeben. Welche Rune im Zusammenhang mit welchem Sternzeichen zum Beispiel. Das hat null miteinander zu tun 🤣 und 100% UPG aber das sagt er nirgendwo im Buch
