Girl! Homemade enchilada sauce is a GAME CHANGER. It costs pennies rather than $1 a can. And its super easy to make. It takes me less than 10 minutes to make it. It's very similar to making gravy from scratch so it's cheap and easy. I love your videos I just wanted to let you know you can go even cheaper by making it at home.
The same goes for cooking dried beans instead of using canned! Better control over sodium and SO much cheaper.
@@alannabeaulieu1359 I started canning my own beans rather than buying them. So cheap, so easy and the only thing in them is salt and beans...
Molly, can you please send me your sauce recipe.
Me too please
Molly, I would love your enchilada sauce recipe! Thanks. -Christie
I love you. I am a college student, so these recipes stretch a far way, and they're so affordable! My queen.
Oh my goodness! I am so happy to hear that I can help you so much. Thank you so very much for your great support and I hope your college year is going well, Lilly💜💜
Lilly, let you friends know! Pool your funds and have a Sunday dinner tradition. Or a Friday dinner tradition. It will give you all a sense of family.
Can I just say how much I appreciate your taking the time out of what must be a very busy schedule with your family to actually respond to comments on your channel. So many don’t and it can leave their viewers feeling unappreciated or ignored. You not only take the time to respond but you tailor each response according to each comment! You’re a rare gem in the world of YT. 💎
Can I also say that in all of my years watching YT, I’ve never felt inspired to donate. You’re the first one. And I feel God put it on my heart to do so. May He richly bless you and yours. 🙏🏻✝️🙌🏻
Oh my goodness! I sure do appreciate you sharing that with me. I do try to read as many of my comments as I can. I truly do you love and appreciate all of my viewers! Thank you so very much for your continued support and I hope you have a wonderful rest of your week💜💜

Note: a 5 Lb sack of potatoes in Arizona ranges from $2.99-$5.00 one packet of instant mashed potatoes for a $1.00 isn't cheap in my opinion. I prefer making 5-10 meals from the $5.00 sack of russets.
Edit: but if $5.00 is all you have these recipes are extremely helpful.

Julia, many thanks for this very timely video. My boss passed away recently and after 25 wonderful years, I’m out of work in addition to losing the best boss EVER! I cook for three adults and I’ll be needing to watch my finances and make tasty dishes. Thanks again for your help! 🥰

So sorry for your loss 💔🙏
Heartbreaking news, Jane. I am so sad for your loss.

Thank you thank you thank you! I suffer from a chronic illness that makes it so difficult for me to cook. I'm always looking for quick and easy. Cheap is something that I thought I had to sacrifice for convenience but I'm being proven wrong! I already brought the ingredients to make four of the meals here. My husband is happy about saving money and I'm happy that these meals are so quick and easy. We can't wait to try them.
A lot of illnesses and chronic inflammation we suffer comes from the food we eat. I suggest you look into "ketogenic diets" and seriously consider taking a 30 day challenge. This diet is a very low carb, low inflammation diet and if you stick to it for 30 days not only will you feel better but you will have better taste, better smell, and better eyesight. This is called an elimination diet because it eliminates foods that harm you. After a month you can start to slowly introduce you old non keto foods back into your diet until you find out which ones don't agree with you. I found out mine was potatoes. I loved them fried with onions, mashed, French fried, and baked. I never realized they caused me to have arthritis in my hands, skin tags, and skin rashes. All of that had cleared up eating a keto diet and came right back the first week of eating potatoes again. I don't eat potatoes now and all of above has gone away but I suffered with them for years not knowing potatoes were doing that to me. I'm not saying potatoes are giving you a problem but if you feel better on keto after 30 days and you eat something that your body doesn't like your body will let you know. By knowing what foods irritate your body can save you a lifetime of suffering if you can eliminate them from your diet.
Oh my goodness! Well I am so very happy to hear that these ideas help you. I am sure that is so difficult to have to deal with a chronic illness on a daily basis. Thank you so very much for your wonderful support here and I do hope that these ideas make your meal planning a little easier. You definitely deserve it! Have a great rest of your week💜🙏
Girl. Same! I have MS fatigue and have to work. Even though I only work 4 hours a day, by the time I get home I'm so drained I barely have the energy to throw some popcorn in the microwave! My Job is mentally draining and that transfers to the physical more than people realize. Also, working only 4 hours a day doesn't really pay any bills, so it's great to have filling meals that don't break the bank!
These are terrific! I'm so glad I found you! I'm 76 and I like to make a dish and split it up and freeze it, so it's like TV dinners only cheaper! i LOVE pasta, rice & beans, so I'm super glad I found you. I like making one dish meals, and I own a casserole dish that size, a rice cooker & a slow cooker! I always shop at Walmart and that is what drew me to you. I also have lost 160 pounds and have 90 to go to my goal weight of 150 pounds. These are going to be perfect! I LOVE Mexican, Italian, and rice, pasta and beans! So glad I found you! You have a new SUB in me today! Thank you! You have excellent price listings, ingredient amounts and complete presentation. JUST what I have been ooking for!
Well thank you so very much, Diana💜I am so very glad you found me too! That’s a great idea to make a meal and divide for yourself for later. Thank you so much for your support here. I am so happy to hear that you’ve lost so much weight! Good for you! Way to go. Thank you so very much for subscribing and I sure do hope you have a great week💜🙌🏼💜
Heartfelt thanks. It is just my husband and myself and he is currently undergoing chemotherapy for leukemia and I struggle with getting him to eat as much as he needs to because he just doesn't have an appetite he is still working full time and it goes without saying that he needs to eat on chemo and since I found your channel he is loved everything and you make it so easy to follow your directions I'm not the most experienced cook I've always been terrified about making soup I thought it was a difficult process and you made it so easy I never would have been able to think about hash browns for the potato soup instead of chopping up potatoes! Also I added some ranch powder to my potato soup and it came out amazing thanks again
Ml😅
Oh my goodness. I am so very sorry to hear that he has leukemia🙏 I really am so happy to hear that he enjoys my recipes and that you feel so much more successful as a cook! That is just wonderful feedback. And it really does make my day. I hope you know that! It amazes me that were partially living in the 1930s because of greed and corruption once again. Dear god.
I wish they would make these happier than thou people bragging about being on snap so they can afford more groceries for free money. They should also go back to making them stand in a daily food line, especially if they don’t work and don’t have time to make enchilada sauce, but can comment, they have no tme for that. While we read our other elders and disabled military, homeless people can’t even afford to eat every day of the week. That upsets me more than anything to read.
Preach! Tbh though I'd rather wait in a food line than to try and apply for snap again it's that much of a pain in the ass
Clinton signed PRWORA Act. Leaves it up to each state to set their laws re: SNAP...most states require you to work at least part time. Your benefits are a lot less. And you can only get SNAP for a set amount of time (months in a row) and PRWORA specifically mandates you can only receive SNAP for 5 yrs. And before y'all start in about multiple babies mean more benefits....they don't. Every state CAPS benefits. Each successive child you have the proportion of benefits increased LESSENS. Until you reach the state-mandated cap.

Tamale pie at our house always had black sliced olives. I love videos with cheap recipes, eating on a budget doesn't have to be boring or feel cheap.
Or have questionable ingredients
Thank you so much for sharing that, Karen! I do hope that you enjoy these recipes and thank you so much for your positive feedback💜💜🙌🏼🙌🏼
Hi Julia !!! Yes groceries are kind of expensive and I think the prices will get even higher before they get lower... Thank God for your videos ! You are so good at showing us how to make great delicious reasonable meals for a fraction of the cost. Thank you 😊
Thanks so very much, Patrice! I really do appreciate you sharing that and unfortunately, I am sure that is true. I appreciate your great support here and hope these recipes are tasty for you and your family💜💜
Wow, Julia! You've really outdone yourself with this one!! SO MANY great affordable dinner ideas! This is a whole month of dinners (probably more because of leftovers)! You are my hero! I'm always recommending your channel (and cookbook and website) to all my family, friends, and coworkers. You are AMAZING! ❤
I was thinking the same thing! A whole month of dinners for $100!!! 🎉🎉🎉
It's easily the best most practical cooking channel on TH-cam.
Thank you so so very much, Michelle! I appreciate your loyal support and I am so grateful for you sharing my videos with others. Thank you so very much again and I hope you enjoy these recipes💜💜
Add some of the pasta water after the pasta is done to jars of sauce to get the last bit of sauce out. Let it cool a bit before shaking the jar and open slowly afterwards. The salt and starch in the pasta water is great and also helps thicken. Pasta water is also great to use when making homemade bread.
Wow! I didn’t know that about pasta water. I appreciate you sharing that tip about making bread with it. I do typically rinse out my jars of pasta sauce with water, but sometimes in my videos I am going to fast and don’t do it. I appreciate you watching🙌🏼🙌🏼
Another great video of budget conscious meals. It is so refreshing to find a cooking channel that doesn’t use fancy ingredients or have complicated steps. I look forward to your videos every Sunday.
I’m so very happy to hear that. And thank you so much for your positive feedback, Darlene. It helps me so much and I’m happy to hear that💜💜
Great job teaching families to cook on a budget!!! Everyone needs all the help we can get. Prices are crazy 😮 Thank you for a job well done. I love your book. 🥰 you are my recipe angel. 😇
You are so welcome! and thank you so very much for your positive words here, Patricia🙌🏼🙌🏼
Really amazing. And I love the format showing each item as you shop and prepare instead of dumping out 25 meals worth of ingredients all over the place.
Thank you so much 😊. That definitely helps me as I prepare my content!
Canadian here. The prices here are completely insane. Really trying to use what we have, and delay the grocery shopping. Adding a couple of eggs to the ramen would be yummy as well. 😊
That is a great way to go about saving money, Paula! Sorry that prices are so very high there for those of you who live in Canada. Thank you so very much for watching though and I hope some of these recipes help💜💜
That 2$ 400g block of cheese in canada is 6.50 cad (4.80 usd) and you have to wait for the egg sales being less than 30 cents each. Oeuf!😅
Yes the prices here are terrible 👎🇨🇦
I live in Canada and where I live that cheese block is above 8$ now :(
for the french bread pizza... just buy garlic bread.. it will save you time and money.

Great video! I make that ramen stir fry also but at the end I add in a couple of fried eggs for some protein.
That’s a wonderful tip! Thanks so much for sharing that🙌🏼🙌🏼
I put it in a main comment but I use my cans that I drained of liquid over the week as my ramen broth. Canned chicken, sweet potato syrup, and mushroom water make an amazing dish. I store it for a week as my Sunday night dinner.
Great job, retired mother who has two children presently unemployed and a school aged grandson living with me. Just came across your video and I am very impressed being a frugal young woman not wasteful.
Thank you so very much. I hope that some of these ideas can help. It’s so great that your kids have a place to be. Thank you so much for your support💜💜
Pro tip: if you buy no salt beans (or make your beans at home without adding salt), no need to drain or rinse the beans when making chili, stew, or soup. Draining and rinsing canned beans washes 2/3 of the potassium down the kitchen sink.
Depending on the recipe, you could measure the bean broth in a measuring cup and use it when cooking rice or sauteeing vegetables. Example: half bean broth and half water to make rice.
I really love how simply these meals come together. It's affordable and delicious. Thank you for putting it up and I can't wait to get your book.
I am so very happy to hear that, Jennifer! I sure do appreciate your positive feedback here and hope you enjoy them🙌🏼

We buy bags of dried white beans and cook them with chopped ham and water. I mash part of the beans to thicken the soup and it is delicious (We buy our ham from Costco because it is nitrate free and doesn't have chemical preservatives.) We also have started buying chicken drumsticks. They are absolutely delicious cooked in the air fryer. We marinate them in coconut aminos, honey and garlic!
I too found an amazing fried drumstick recipe for my air fryer. I couldn't believe I made it. Simple and very inexpensive for the drumsticks!
@@misslady3456 YUM! What coating did you use? We are empty nesters, so we freeze the drumsticks after cooking to pull out for a quick dinner!
I will see if I can find it. Super simple and I'm still in shock I made them, they tasted amazing and were made in my air fryer!
Wow! That sounds so delicious right about now, Patti. Thank you so very much for sharing that great tip.💜💜
mRNA has been added to pigs and sold to consumers as pork since 2018. As of 2023, our beef now has mRNA in it. All with no consumer warning food label. They figured out how to grow vegetables with mRNA injected into them but these are not yet approved for consumer consumption yet. Pork and Beef injected with mRNA are approved for human consumption You will eat your mRNA. mRNA may not be a chemical preservative - but it is worse.
Thank you Julia for the affordable and delicious meals. God Bless you and your family 🙏

We sold to everyone from Oscar Meyer, Boars Head, and Purina as dog food fillers. Brand labels mean nothing, and seeing you use other brand alternatives was refreshing. I look forward to using your meal plans.
Thank you! :)
Very interesting! Thanks so much for sharing that and I appreciate your positive feedback. Thanks so much for watching and I hope you have a wonderful rest of your weekend💜💜
Julia, I love how you show how families can eat healthy, nutritious dinners on an extreme budget. Checking "per unit" pricing is a real budget booster, also cross-checking between fresh and frozen foods for the best deal as well. Great shopping tips for staying in budget.
Thank you so very much for your positive feedback. It is so important! I agree with you. And I sure do appreciate your great support here, Shelley💜💜
Like the pizza idea!
So cute to see you with your kids in the grocery store 😀
I also love all your cute plaques with sayings.
I love that you started adding nutritional information about the healthy ingredients!!
Thank you so very much for all of that positive feedback, Bernadette. It definitely does help me as I create my videos. Those little plaques help me too during the day. I hope you have a great week!💜💜
I always wondered about adding a little water to the jars. You answered my question. I do that and then clean the jars for other things.
Very true! It is really a great way to get all of the sauce out and not be super wasteful🙌🏼
I too have always done this. Works great! 🤗
The recipes are amazing and quick!
I've learned a bunch and really appreciate the calming tone of the channel. Thank you!
I am so very happy to hear that, Becky! Thank you so much for sharing your positive feedback about me and my channel. It helps me so much. and I am so very happy to hear that my recipes help you so much🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼
Thanks for putting together compilations like this. Book is awesome too!
You are so very welcome and I sure do appreciate your positive feedback about my cookbook, Laura💜💜
One of my favorite casserole recipes - sooo good:
1 lb fully cooked bratwurst or Polish sausage, cut into ½-inch pieces
4 medium potatoes, cooked, peeled, and cubed
1 (16-oz) can cut green beans, drained
1 (10 ¾-oz) can condensed cream of mushroom soup
1 cup shredded cheddar cheese (4 oz)
½ cup onion, chopped
In a 3-quart casserole, stir together the sausage, potatoes, green beans, condensed cream of mushroom soup, cheese, and onion.
Bake, covered, in a 350 oven about 45 minutes or till heated through.
Of course all the amounts are to taste, so to make it a little cheaper you can use less sausage and add an extra potato, or use more or less onion or cheese!
That sounds so good! Thank you so very much for sharing your great recipe and I appreciate you watching too💜💜
Great ideas! If you cook your own beans/veggies and can/freeze them you can save a ton of money! Always enjoy your recipes!
A great point, Blanca! Thank you so much for sharing that with me here. And you have a great rest of your week💜💜
I noticed that you didn’t use mushrooms in many dishes but they are very good for you and can be used as a meat substitute in many dishes. Also, a problem with making meals affordable can be the cost of extra things like spices, oils, condiments. I realize you don’t use much of it but some spices can be as much as the whole meal you’re cooking. I know that many stores have a $1 spice area but I’ve tested the $1 dried spices compared to the ones costing $4-$7 and there is a big difference in flavor. Fresh spices are even better and I’ve found that growing my own in a little window box is very affordable. Spices like basil and rosemary do well.
Another trick I found that helps cut costs is using Italian sausage in dishes. It usually has some many spices in it already that in helps flavor the dish without adding extra spices. I hope this helps 😊
Lentils are very underrated. I have a fantastic lentil bean & cheese dip recipe that is affordable and so good. If anyone is interested in the recipe let me know and I’ll add it to my comment.
All of your comments and tips definitely do help, Dee🙌🏼 thank you so much for sharing them. And yes, I do use a lot of seasoning in most of my recipes. Growing something fresh is just a complete game changer. I do like to freeze my basil in ice cube trays with olive oil and use it that way. Thank you so very much for your great support here and I hope you have a wonderful rest of your week🙌🏼🙌🏼
I love how you always try to make your meals well balanced as well as affordable! Amazing! Thank you
You are so welcome! And I sure do appreciate your positive feedback😊
Hello Julia wow thank you so much❤❤❤
You are so welcome💜🙌🏼
I like how you can process these ingredients into affordable recipes, and how you can translate these methods so that the rest of us can actually find use for them. Especially for those of us who are heavily invested in cooking equipment. Thanks for sharing all of this!
Well thank you so very much for all of that positive feedback. It helps me so much to hear this and I’m really happy to have you here is one of my supporters. You have a great rest of your week!🙌🏼
Wow cheap and simple. What a refreshing change from so many complicated or expensive recipes. Thank you for sharing

I really do hope that these ideas help you then, Rachel. I’m sorry to hear times are tough for you right now, but I appreciate your positive support and hope you enjoy💜

Oh my! That is no good at all. I am so very sorry to hear that. I hope that some of these ideas help and thank you so very much for watching🙏
That is so sad 🙏🙏🙏
Wow thank you Julia for all these budget friendly recipes! So far I've made 4 of your recipes for my family and each time my husband has said "well that was delightful" . I intend to make each of these recipes 😊 thanks again! Keep on bringing the budget recipes for us please
Wonderful! I am so very glad you have enjoyed them so much. I sure do appreciate you and this great support💜
Julia, you've done it again. I love all of these recipes. Thank you so much!.
You are so welcome! And thank you so very much🙌🏼
I like that you show yourself shopping at Walmart. I find my Walmart so big and overwhelming. I need a map! 😂
That is so very true! It is so big and definitely exhausting if you forget some thing from the other side of the store🤣
Since jarred pasta sauce can be pretty pricey where I live, I've just been using a can of tomato paste mixed with the liquids from whatever canned goods I'm using, or pasta water plus seasonings.
Cooking the tomato paste until it gets a bit darker gives it a deeper flavor too. Howver, the cost for a small can has gone up from 50/60 cents to $1.29!!!! And that was storebrand too 😢
It is crazy the cost of tomato paste nowadays! It used to be one of the cheapest things you could buy. Thanks so much for your great tip and I appreciate you watching, Carol💜
You're awesome Julia, God bless you and your lovely family!
Well thank you so very much! I sure do appreciate that😊
Thank you for making videos like this that make things a little easier for all of us. I don't see the price gouging from companies ending any time soon so this helps keep families fed.
So glad it was helpful. And I think you are right, prices just keep going up. You have a great rest of your week and I hope you enjoy some of these recipes🙌🏼
What's up with Walmart and pasta? I live clear on the other side of the US, in Georgia, and our pasta aisle has been wiped out like that for the past few weeks! I really love the videos where you take us shopping. Thank you, Julia!
Same in New Orleans
Just because, she shops at Walmart that doesn’t mean she works for Walmart, therefore, why would she know? Lol, common sense!
That is crazy! We had the same thing going on here for so long and I just couldn’t figure it out either. Every time I would go it would seem like it had been wiped out 🤷♀️ obviously some supply chain issue I guess! Thank you so much for watching🙌🏼🙌🏼
There’s no “t” in cannellini 😊
My hubby LOVED the sausage and egg casserole. I added cut up grape tomatoes. And he added some hot picante sauce and cheese.
That’s awesome! Thank you so much for sharing what you added to this recipe. I’m so happy that you both enjoyed it so much💜
Seriously I don't know how you keep outdoing yourself with these recipes !! I have to try some of these !!
Thankyou !!
Glad you like them! and I really do hope that some of these recipes help, Annette🙌🏼🙌🏼
There's NO WAY you bought all the food in that picture for $5.00!!!!
Sorry about that! It was $5 per meal. Thank you for watching 💜
The empty shelves are alarming 😮
Its official. I cant stop watching your videos. I got busy and wasnt watching as much this past 2 months. And my eating out went overboard. So glad to be back to your videos for motivation! Its a constant must! 😂❤
😂😂 that is the best news ever!! Thank you so much for sharing that and I sure do appreciate your enthusiasm for me and my channel. Makes my day!🙌🏼🙌🏼
Julia, your energy is just awesome! Love watching your videos!!
Thank you so much!!🙌🏼🙌🏼
5.00 per meal
What in the world? Our Walmart has 18 eggs for $2.76. Was this recorded a while back maybe?
$3.43 here for 18 eggs here in SE Kentucky
In Canada at Walmart the store brand of a dozen eggs are around $4.50.
Could this be a repeat video? I was thinking the same
I just checked my Kroger app. It.s currently $2.19 for 18 eggs in the Detroit suburbs.
Just bought 18eggs in Texas Walmart $3.18 the price has dropped they were $4. So don't believe repeat video the prices go up and down every week here, I spent $9.00 just for vegetable oil and don't even get me started on a bag of sugar lol groceries have quadrupled.
Thanks for sharing so many economical recipes in one video, Julia! Everything looks so good!
You’re so very welcome, Ginger! I hope that these ideas help and thank you so much again💜💜
Julia, always, love your videos! You explain everything well, and they have such a good flow. I will definitely be making quite a few of these dishes! Keep up the great work!😊
Thank you so very much! And I’m so happy to have you here, Linzy💜 I appreciate your positive feedback and so happy you enjoy my meals!!
Yes these are cheap meals, no none of them are healthy, full of processed ingredients. Packaged ramen is one of the worse things you can eat.
I know you are just trying to be helpful during these financially difficult times but there are so many delicious truly healthy alternatives, most are not convient but can be homemade.
I actually think the title should read 25 meals for 5 dollars EACH. The way its written is saying you can make 25 meals for 5 dollars and that's not the case, lol
Shut up
I'm always looking for good tasting budget friendly meals. Ms. Julia, you always come through and I am never disappointed. Thank you for these yummy recipes 😊
You are so welcome and thank you so very much for your loyal support here. I sure do appreciate that! You have a great week and I hope you enjoy🙌🏼🙌🏼
I love your variety of dishware. They are so colorful and fun. Thank you for taking the time to make this informative video!
Thank you so very much! I appreciate that and I sure do appreciate your support here💜💜
I TOTALLY get having to eat what you can afford if finances are a big challenge…..HOWEVER, most (if not all) of these products are low quality, have GMOs, and will be detrimental to your health over time. So when possible, I would try to purchase better quality products….anything is better than nothing. I know when it comes down to whether you’re gonna go hungry or eat low quality foods….you do what you have to do…just sucks that the affordable foods are usually the most toxic for us 😣😠
Can u do cheap recipes that are non-gmo? I don't mind spending 50 cents more per can to avoid bio engineered food. I don't think mixing the genes or food or adding mRNA is in God's plan. Thx a million 😊
I always love watching you videos. Your recipes are simple and delicious (I’ve liked everyone I’ve ever made). I grew up cooking with my Mom, but for so many they were not taught. Your content is so valuable. I wish you all the success!
That’s wonderful that you grew up cooking with your mother. You’re so right, many people did not have that opportunity. I really do appreciate your positive feedback. I’m so happy that you have enjoyed so many of my meals! You have a great week and thank you so much for your loyal support💜💜
This is my all time favorite house. It’s so peaceful and joyful.❤

I am really so very sorry to hear that. I’m not sure if you have food banks nearby, but they are a great resource when times are really tough. I am happy to hear though that some of these ideas help you and I do hope that things get better for you.🙏
