    I have the wide maxx. The guy at hub hobby said 70 is recommended in rear 60 in front. I willkeep the stuffer springs in back to prevent it from bottoming out as much.

    2:08 it seems like it impacted basically in line with the arms so there really wasn't any way for the suspension to compress.

  • @MrBigblock78
    @MrBigblock78 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I think what Maxx needs is one way valving in the shocks. I did similar thing with my Revo years ago. I basically fitted a little flapper valve on top side of the piston. What it would basically do is on compression (landing) the flexible flapper valve would lift and oil can move through all the holes without any restriction. As it rebounds the oil flows through the piston in the other direction. Now the flapper valve would close and restrict oil flow through half as many holes in the piston. I don't know if that makes sense but proper automotive shocks (dampers) work on a similar principal. The compression and rebound offer different resistance. Traxxas used to make a kit for the revo but I made my own with some thin clear plastic. Worked so good. The car floated like it was riding on a cloud over any terrain and it would never bounce on landings either.
    There is a lot of physics at play here and just simply going with thicker oil is not the right way. The spring should take the initial shock of a landing or a bump in the road. Then once that energy is stored in the spring the damper goes to work. As the spring starts to unload the energy stored within it the damper needs to restrict that force and dissipate over a lot longer period than what that energy was stored at into the spring hence the more restrictive flow of oil through the piston on rebound. Hope that makes sense. Having valving that is same in both directions is very counter productive. By the time you get the fluid thick enough for the rebound to work correctly you will get to the point where the damper will absorb more of the initial impact than the actual spring would.
    Sorry for massive rant but I don't think you will fix that issue with specific weight shock oil. The Maxx is very rear biased when it comes to weight front suspension was always going to be an issue.

    • @MrBigblock78
      @MrBigblock78 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have torn my truck down in itty bitty pices as I wanted to go over everything and try different fluids. The shocks will definitely be getting the flapper valve treatment and I plan not to go too thick of an oil. People sticking 80-90wt are just turning the shocks into springs of a sort. Other than terrible handling it will possibly damage shock seals due to huge internal preassures and possibly cause bent shock shafts. Anyway as soon as I get my rig together I will try to make a little vid of weather I was successful or not.

      @@earlmoorhead5555 look up traxxas part number TRX5461. That is the kit for the GTR shocks like found on Revos, Slayers, Jatos, etc. I dont think they will work on the Maxx size shocks but it will give you an idea on how they work. Very easy to replicate though. Like I said I just used some clear plastic from some packaging. Its easy. And sorry, if I knew you were an auto tech I wouldn't have tried to dumb down my explanation. @@earlmoorhead5555 Hello ... I did not understand your question very well. But my tests are still being done with standard springs (stock). I tighten the Spring Retainer Adjuster for maximum pressure. I am waiting for the GT-Maxx 1.725 Rate springs to arrive, as they are more rigid. This 12,500 oil is a lot like honey, maybe 10% thicker. The test dropping the truck at a height of two meters (6.5 feet) was without the weight of the battery. I did two shots and watched in slow motion, the chassis was half an inch to hit. From what I've seen, shocks are using their space for movement very well. However, I am also using a shock-limiting rubber that I made with sandal soles. It was very professional, I drilled by heating the tip of a tool the same thickness as the shafts. I am very happy with the result. However, as I will not always be jumping from three meters in height, I am thinking of reducing the oil to 7,000 CST.

    I've put 60wt all the way around in the shocks on mine. I put a few layers of gorilla tape on the underside of the body as well. Between the extra weight of the tape and the the thicker oil it has definitely helped with that bounce you are referring to. I had to find a sweet spot on the spring adjustment(a little tighter in the back)to fine tune the chassis slap and bounce. I've definitely thought about it needing some squishy tires too. 🤔

    great vids earl! I did your diff lube mod and helped a bunch! i just ordered a wide kit and have a few thoughts. I'm thinking add o ring or 2 on shock shafts as bump stops like we do on the heavy rc's to limit the tub slap? and being you have the luxury of 2 trucks the thought of trying the wide kit just on the back for comparison and leaving the front stock. being winter I've only had mine at the bmx park once and i noticed the back always slapped the ground in stock form. might look goofy but thinking would be interesting to see what more spring rate and oil weight with back widened only would bring??? just thoughts love the channel!

      Thanks for the great comments...as for the o-ring in the shocks it won’t work due to the shock has a plastic bump stop built in so the shock shaft never bottoms out to touch the o-rings I did show the bump stop on all 4 shocks in one of the wide maxx videos but it would have been a great idea if traxxas didn’t change the design on these shocks 👍👍👍hope that made sense and I hope i understood what you where asking me to try 🔥🔥

    Hi Earl, another great vid... Thicker oil and a lighter spring would help slow the shock action. Wonder if that fix the bouncing/roll over problem?

    • @earlmoorhead5555
      @earlmoorhead5555  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sway 1966 yes springs definitely softer and I believe heavier oil in the front and maybe less holes or smaller holes in the shock valves 👍👍🔥🔥💪💪
