"That they may be known " is referring to something that will create a distinction from the other women, ie. Non believing women, slave girls. 3. I love how slowly and peacefully he speaks, I just wish he'd give them a chance to ask more questions. They initially asked about hijab and he started there then went to fasting then politics. I understand the eagerness of wanting to share all of the wonderful aspects of Islam but it makes it easy for people to get overwhelmed and tune it out.

Question 1. What kind of abuse can happen in the night that isn't rape?
2. "That they may be known " is referring to something that will create a distinction from the other women, ie. Non believing women, slave girls.
3. Umar clearly says that he feared there are some bad men amongst the muslims but do you think a mere hijab could stop them from raping the women? Definitely no. But if a law was in place that protected the Muslim women and a garment to show a distinction then it would become safer for the Muslim women since adultery and rape weren't applicable to slaves.

I mean, reading the other translation of the verse (corpus.quran.com/translation.jsp?chapter=33&verse=59) they also used words like 'annoyed' rather than 'abused' which makes me lean towards maybe it could mean verbal abuse, which includes things like cat-calling. Then again, I concede that I don't know the original Arabic word or it's meaning.

Which mean only your own slaves. It doesn't mean you can just go and do it with any and all slaves.

Guys dont be fooled, the reason why Umar told Allah to tell their women to cover was because he feared some muslim men would mistakenly rape the believing women so he suggested to Muhammad to tell the women to cover to distinguish themselves from the slave girls who were ok to be raped.

O Prophet, tell your wives and your daughters and the women of the believers to bring down over themselves [part] of their outer garments [jalābībihinna جَلَٰبِيبِهِنَّ]. That is more suitable that they will be known and not be abused. And ever is Allah Forgiving and Merciful.
Quran 33:59
Narrated 'Aisha: The wives of the Prophet used to go to Al-Manasi, a vast open place (near Baqia at Medina) to answer the call of nature at night. 'Umar used to say to the Prophet "Let your wives be veiled," but Allah's Apostle did not do so. One night Sauda bint Zam'a the wife of the Prophet went out at 'Isha' time and she was a tall lady. 'Umar addressed her and said, "I have recognized you, O Sauda." He said so, as he desired eagerly that the verses of Al-Hijab (the observing of veils by the Muslim women) may be revealed. So Allah revealed the verses of "Al-Hijab" (A complete body cover excluding the eyes).

Narrated Anas:
Umar said, "I agreed with Allah in three things," or said, "My Lord agreed with me in three things. I said, 'O Allah's Apostle! Would that you took the station of Abraham as a place of prayer.' I also said, 'O Allah's Apostle! Good and bad persons visit you! Would that you ordered the Mothers of the believers to cover themselves with veils.' So the Divine Verses of Al-Hijab (i.e. veiling of the women) were revealed. I came to know that the Prophet had blamed some of his wives so I entered upon them and said, 'You should either stop (troubling the Prophet ) or else Allah will give His Apostle better wives than you.' When I came to one of his wives, she said to me, 'O 'Umar! Does Allah's Apostle haven't what he could advise his wives with, that you try to advise them?' " Thereupon Allah revealed:--
"It may be, if he divorced you (all) his Lord will give him instead of you, wives better than you Muslims (who submit to Allah).." (66.5)

Qur'an 8:38. Say to those who have disbelieved [that] if they cease, what has previously occurred will be forgiven for them.
‘Amr ibn al-‘As reported: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Do you not know that embracing Islam wipes away all sins committed before it, that emigration wipes away what came before it, and the Hajj pilgrimage wipes away what came before it?”

I love how slowly and peacefully he speaks, I just wish he'd give them a chance to ask more questions. They initially asked about hijab and he started there then went to fasting then politics. I understand the eagerness of wanting to share all of the wonderful aspects of Islam but it makes it easy for people to get overwhelmed and tune it out.
