    According to the designer on BGG, it does say the victory condition in the rulebook...in a single sentence in the game summary at the start: "During the game, players explore a forest, fight monsters, gain skills and equipment, and try to defeat the forest boss. The game is played in rounds until victory… or defeat!"
    Uh, yeah, I agree that's not explicit enough.

    • @joshuamills8335
      @joshuamills8335 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      But honestly, what more do you need to stay? There's one boss. Play to beat it. How many more words are needed?

    • @JorWat25
      @JorWat25 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@joshuamills8335 All I'll say is these two are far from the only people to be confused by what ends the game. To quote some people on BGG:
      "The rulebook is not clear enough in my opinion on many aspects. Especially the end of the game. How do you win the game ? You can deduce from the introduction that you have to beat the Boss, but it'ns not specifically written in the corebook."
      "I understand how players can lose the game, but how do they win it? It is not stated anywhere in the rulebook."
      "After reading the rules and looking through the whole rulebook, I have exactly the same question. HOW DO YOU END THE GAME AND WHAT IS THE WINNING CONDITION?! The creators didn't state it anywhere in the rules."
      "Why is there no section in the rules about the end of the game? I looked for a part of the rules that explain the goal/end of the game, but it seemed missing."

      You win when you defeat the boss. That’s 7 words. What they wrote is not good enough. What is “victory?” Is it beating the boss? Is it beating the boss and all of the monsters? You should never have to make assumptions when reading a rulebook.

    I agree. The rulebook leaves a lot to be desired. It’s a fun little dungeon-crawl that I think lost something in the translation. But it’s cheap and plays quick.

    Great review and I decided to buy this game anyway, because of the short campaign en kinda quick to learn rules. Some rules aren't clear enough, you where right about that.
    I came in this situation in which I rolled my 4 hero dice (1, 6, 6, 6). I kept a 1 and a 6 and rolled again (4, 6). The 4 I can place, but the 6 I cannot (it is already there). I can't use it to get a special die (nor do I need one). Is this die just lost? I'm not in battle so a special die isn't usefull to me.
    I hope I'm explaining it right and somebody knows. Thank you!

    I wonder how this compared to Tiny Epic Dungeons? Seems very similar in terms of mechanics, setup, and weight.

    • @ObsidianKnight90
      @ObsidianKnight90 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

      That's exactly what I was thinking! I haven't played Explorers of Woodlands but I really enjoy Tiny Epic Dungeons. From what I can gather from this video...
      - EotW uses roll to move whereas TED characters have a set move distance based on the character and equipment.
      - EotW has minor enemies that can optionally be powered up on certain tiles. TED has minor enemies (various Goblins) as well as mini-bosses (like the Minotaur) which must be defeated before you can fight the boss (like the Gorgon).
      - EotW has characters with asymmetric dice manipulation powers and then unique skills they get by spending a resource. TED has characters with asymmetric amounts of Skill Dice, Health, Energy, as well as one power they can always use and two powers/actions they can use as long as they have not equipped an item to that slot.
      - EotW has item cards that do individual specific things. TED also has items that are parts of Sets and having multiple items of a given Set equipped give extra bonuses.
      - EotW has a boss time/threat tracker, TED has the Torch which constantly falls and triggers enemies appearing and attack. TED's tracker also has two phases and two sides, for finding the boss and then one for fighting the boss.
      - EotW appears to have a very quick setup, TED is a quick setup as long as you don't accidently shuffle all the cards together.
      - EotW is a Light game, I'd clock TED at Medium but with a learning curve for all the symbols
      - EotW has a very wonky rulebook and no player handouts, TED has a handy chart showing what all the symbols mean at the back of the rulebook for easy reference and every single character card also has most of the common symbols explained on the reverse side (and you'll always have more of those than players so you can use the unused character cards as references).
      I would 100% recommend Tiny Epic Dungeons over Explorers of the Woodlands. The symbols take a while to understand and it's VERY hard, but it's also very fun and plays quite quick once you 'get' it. The Stories and Potions & Perils expansions are both excellent additions, and you can get everything quite cheap, it might be the cheapest Tiny Epic on the market where I live at least.

    Going in cautious with this one I agree with zee that I might have to house rule something’s, because I really find the game so appealing! Camilas thoughts on the game made me think it’s just the kind of game I’d enjoy as well.

    Is there any game similar to this? Lighthearted RPG-like coop game that can be played quickly? May have campaign, but as long as it can be played in relatively quick bursts. Theme ideally, fantasy, nature, medieval, but as long as it's not too dark it's fine.

    Hopefully that designer will get better and make a second edition that will fix all of those things and make some things better.

    Rulebook that doesn't cover 100% of game aspects disqualifies the game to me.

  • @joshuamills8335
    @joshuamills8335 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

    Odd, that they were so hung up on the rule book and the win condition. Page 2 explicitly says "During the game, players explore the forest, fight monsters, gain skills, AND TRY TO DEFEAT THE FOREST BOSS". Then, set up clearly shows there is one boss to put in one of the 3 last tiles. Additionally on page 16 it shows the only lose condition: if the "blue cube on the threat track reaches the last available space, the game is lost.". Honestly, it's really straight forward game. My only gripe is the last page of the rule book should have been a glossary of icons, or include that as a player aid.

    Hey guys, thank you for the review. I am a fan of the Dice tower and generally take into consideration Zee's and Camilla's reviews, however, this review was a bit disappointing. If the rulebook is in the state that you are describing then why does this game get a seal of approval and a 7.5? Would you give a seal of approval if the game was missing components and you had to supply your own? Because a rulebook in this state is as bad. Furthermore, gameplay-wise, was this even a well designed game when you had to make so many judgement calls? Please be more considerate of this matter in your reviews going forward. You do have significant influence in the industry and should not tolerate bad rulebooks especially since this seems to be happening more and more. Also, you risk making the seal of approval not mean that much. Anyway, apologies for the negative feedback to your otherwise well-rounded review, as i said I am a big fan of the Dice Tower and generally love and agree with most of your reviews.

    • @salmonblox
      @salmonblox 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +9

      As always, the score is just a number, and the seal is just a sticker. The important thing is what they discuss in their final thoughts, and why they might have enjoyed the game despite its faults. If you buy a game based of just a numerical score, I wouldn’t blame that on the reviewer.

    • @Manaswap
      @Manaswap 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@salmonbloxit's not just a sticker though. The whole point is it being a mark of quality. If it doesn't show that then what's the point?

    • @salmonblox
      @salmonblox 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@Manaswap A “mark of quality” is highly subjective. Camilla found enough quality in this game to give it a score of 7.5, which hits the threshold for the Dice Tower Seal of Approval. That’s really all it is. Zee did not find enough quality in it for him, and I think I lean more toward his judgement, honestly. But that doesn’t invalidate Camilla’s opinion, which is reflected by the Seal.
      I know it goes against our nature sometimes, but I would just recommend not taking the Seals or the scores that seriously. It’s fun to hear scores and compare and all that, but at the end of the day you’re trying to wrap a rigid numerical system around someone’s nebulous thoughts and feelings on a game. If you want the real story, listen to the whole review. If you just want to go off the Seal, you get what you get.
