Ponder the actual meaning of St Patrick *"Driving the snakes out of Ireland".*
In our naive modern minds, we take, and it is promoted, as literal.
*However, the "Snake" as a symbol actually represented "Wisdom" (i.e., on the "Tree of Knowledge", likely a Middle Age interpretation mistake, and the Physician's symbol).
The Snakes of Ireland would have most certainly have been: *"Those whom carried Ancient Wisdom"*
Those we are taught as being Pagans, Druids, Pics, the builders of the various Astrological ruins.
This is a most worthy topic for study.

The Pics were not pagan.. well actually the Celts and Picts were, but this was a tribe. There were several within the Celts themselves. They later grew into what is Irish Welsh and Scottish peoples.

Here in the Philippines we call all leprechauns, gnomes, elf, goblins, brownie, pixies, imps, and trolls as duende or "nuno sa punso". A "nuno sa punso" is an elf that sits on top of an ant hill and believed to be their home. It is a dwarf like element with an evil power that causes mischief to the one who peed or accidentally destroyed the ant hill. It is similar to Rumpelstiltskin. While fairies and sprites are called ada, engkantada, diwata, or nimpa like the goddess of nature Maria Makiling or Maryang Makiling.

Going out on a limb here, but JRR Tolkien may well have rewoven strands of these old Leprechaun tales to arrange for Bilbo Baggins to acquire by trickery the most terrible valuable ring ever under one mountain, and the most valuable gem to the Dwarves by tricking a dragon under another mountain.
No shoes were involved though. 😁

Famourians from beneath the sea turned into the Zora, and the Leprechaun.. into the Dwarfs of the earth.. into the Gorons of the mountain. So the Hylians was the Irish??? But Nintendo probably did it too.

A ring of invisibility appears in the Welsh tale of Peredur, as does a mysterious creature called an Afanc, which is cognate with the Irish abhac, meaning 'dwarf, midget'. The Welsh story also has a lot in common with the Norse Volsung's saga about Sigurd which also features the dwarf Andvari and his magic ring. The Norse Loki also had a pair of shoes that enabled him to run through air and over water. We have no surviving stories about where Loki got these shoes but he is associated with dwarves in the sagas.

When the Irish came to the Land of Opportunity, they brought with them many traditions and the firm belief that you should work hard for your fortune. From coast to coast, the Irish earned their “pots of gold” in order to benefit their lives and the generations that followed. The Irish legacy is one reason the tale of the leprechaun’s promise of false fortune has become a fixture in almost every St. Patrick’s Day celebration. You may not believe in leprechauns, but if you want your pot of gold, you must do something to secure it for yourself.

"Of the greatest of the gods, the victor of the battle on the plain of towers, Lugh Lamhfada, god of all knowledge, patron of all arts and crafts, his name is still known today. But as memory of the mighty warrior, the invincible god, has faded, he is known only as Lugh-chromain, little stooping Lugh of the sidhe, relegated to the role of a fairy craftsmen. And, as even the language in which he was venerated has disappeared, all that is left of the supreme god of the children of the Danu is the distorted form of that name Lugh-chromain... leprechaun"

Irish Celtic art has always been close to my heart and I would even get in trouble in school for doodling trisklilions, triple knots and other examples of la Tene art in the margins of my homework.

The ancient association between Leprechauns and the Fomorians is interesting as both were also linked with creatures known as the Gaborchend or 'goat-heads' perhaps related to the goat sacrificed at Lupercalia and with goatish Pan. Could Abcan be identical with Cnu Deireoil, the dwarf musician of the Fianna identified as Lugh's son just as Pan was identified as the son of Hermes/Mercury?

His sons then sends them on three tasks, one of the tasks is to get a golden apple off a tree in a foreign land. Interesting stuff.

Leprechauns, Fomorians and Gaborchind were said in the Book of the Dun Cow (this is a genuine Irish manuscript, I know the name's kind of funny) to be the children of the biblical Ham and the result of a curse placed upon him by Noah. Somewhere else, rather annoyingly I can't remember where, I seem to recall it being written in an Irish manuscript that all three of these mythical peoples shared a common ancestress who was a giant mermaid too.

Why would I? The Irish were particularly part of the Gaelic branch of the Celtic world. One must be specific in how they relate information. Vagueness is a horrible enemy for historians. It would be like when people look at one Germanic nation or Celtic nation like Wales or Norway and just skip over Celtic/Germanic connections and go straight for the Bronze Age Proto Indo-European connection instead. It would be deliberately vague, at best. Just my two bit opinion on the matter, though.

Oh is that why some people put gnome statues in their gardens ? Cause they symbolise fertility ?

FYI these are not a thing here in Ireland. We seldom if ever hear anything about them .. lots of other forms of disincarnate beings but I never heard a single word about them from folk beliefs in my region.

Titter ye not but I have regular communication with the "little ones".
So many Friday and Saturday nights on my way from Kelly's bar the small red ones, often taking the form of a beautifully glowing hare accompany me on the journey home, discreetly disappearing when anyone approaches to ask about my well-being and only re-appearing when they have gone to ensure my safe journey home.

A Leprechaun is basically a Jew but with Famorian shit instead of Satanic shit then? Interesting.

I have a large plush leprechaun that laughs when squeezed he was a gift from my late boyfriend who was Irish and he passed earlier this year so the doll is very precious and if I was to catch a real leprechaun and he granted me a wish I’d just wish for world peace and for him to be my friend don’t care about his gold
