The whistler is OP's estranged father. His mother took him and left because of his father's psychotic tendencies. He knows that being around would be unhealthy for his son so he keeps his distance. The loneliness is too much for him to contain so he whistles to his boy to let him know that he is there and cares for him.

But the post was about a certain type of emotion, the emotion we don't feel in day to day life. It's an outwardly feeling which I won't be able to put into words. Sawrattan yeah dumb move for him when he was young, why did he even have the stupidity to think "hey it's 11 pm and I'm still awake, i guess I'll walk the dog on a time where i can't see where I'm walking"
On #3, I don't get an "existential dread" but my whole life I've said that certain songs (or any type of art but mostly music) make me feel extremely nostalgic about things that have never happened..or at least in this life. The thing that freaks me out is that nobody knows what I'm talking about when I try to explain the feeling. It's like I feel very nostalgic about a certain atmosphere I've never been to in this life that gets triggered by certain types of art. Can anyone relate?
Oh yeah dude I have the same feeling about songs or pictures. Something just kinda triggers me and I feel super nostalgic and blue and I start to fantasize about the feeling. Kinda like I would try to remember something really hard of what I a don't have an actual memory of. But it still feels like I had experienced something that connects to this artwork. It's soo weird. But I don't think that we're alone. There is an actual word in my native language that would translate as 'world- weariness'. It is defined that one is not pleased with their actual reality and is longing for a in their sense better or more perfect reality. It's a longing for the unknown and a wondering for the 'what ifs' in life i guess.
May I ask what the actual word is in your native language? And if you can think of any songs off the top of your head that strongly gives you this feeling?
Just thought of a couple more: Blue - Eiffel 65 Bitter Sweet Symphony - The Verve Just to clarify, these songs don't create a nostalgic feeling simply because they are songs I listened to/enjoyed a long time ago, it's more of the vibe they give off. The first time I heard these songs I got a sort of nostalgic feeling/vibe.
ShotfunsCentral that's so weird cause Opposite of Adults (essentially the same song as Kids) has always given me that feeling. It's weird that a lot of the same songs trigger this feeling in people who experience it. I went to the reddit post from this video the night I watched it, and it was a rabbit hole of people posting songs. It was terrifying how accurately some of the songs portrayed the feeling.

i'm a musician, i can explain the music one; certain musicians(like myself) will play around with their tuning to create different effects on how the music is "absorbed." industry standard is A=440 Hz, which is.... ok. some bands have been known to tune slightly above that, to A= 444 Hz or even higher. which creates a harsher sound. it's a very slight difference, but the body reacts very specifically to this kind of thing.. likewise, tuning to A=432 Hz creates a much more cerebral effect. this is why certain bands- even depressing ones- "feel" better. I use this method a LOT when i play a song that's tuned very low(drop G, which is VERY low territory for a guitar.
Anyone who is looking for genuine answers this doesn't explain it at all hahaha You are just using irrelevant information to back up something completely different. Jungle Boogie and Heart shaped box which were the 2 prime examples were 99% not recorded in this tuning
there is no scientific backing to the validity of 432 tuning. To claim that a pitch is more emotional and in tune with the universe is a ridiculous statement friend. Here: th-cam.com/video/EKTZ151yLnk/w-d-xo.html
These are basically Creepy Pastas. They're not meant to be solved they're just stories. Amateur mystery writers or horror writers trying things out on reddit.
I think you're right about most of the stories like this, especially the ones that have very fantastical elements to them. There are stories that are actually real though.
Yeah is that not just, y'know, a normal thing that happens? I thought that was just a common emotional reaction to some things. There are songs that make you feel happy, movies that are inspiring, songs that are thought provoking, empowering, heartbreaking, sad, relatable, nostalgic, make you angry, make you want to party - All sorts of things. I totally get that feeling of existential dread, nostalgia, depression, contemplation, smallness but I don't think it's weird for people to feel it or for it to be brought on by certain emotional expressions. More so, it's kind of an unpleasant or upsetting experience that makes it feel so deep and significant, yet totally normal.
I get that from the ending music to Spongebob, weirdly enough, as well as music from the 1920's and 40's. Mines more nostalgia laced with depression, but the sense of extenstial dread is very prominient.

I believe the whistling story because me and my 7 year old daughter have heard it, about 2 weeks ago she woke me up one morning just before sunrise shaking and terrified because of it, we still can't find what or who's doing it but we still keep hearing it and it lasts up to 30 minutes at times, neighbours are too far away for it to be them, unless they were coming over to our property which would still be creepy if they were doing so
He was ten, and 11 pm ain't that late. I was free to go out on my own until about 10 or 11 at that age. Calling my mom a shitty parent because she taught me how to take care of myself early on?
I'm pretty sure I saw somewhere that the whistling he was hearing was actually a bird call, as determined through a video that he posted which had the whistling. It's just that he had coincidentally gone to every location where that bird was native to.
TheDon 808 oh really they don’t? You mind telling the little shit ass birds who live around my house that? 3am and they are fucking singing up a storm.
@gopher wiretap Yeah yeah, it's easy to try and sound tough on the internet. Nobody, I repeat nobody, is shooting somebody with a shotgun because they're whistling. Only an idiot / psychopath thinks that whistling justifies murder.

This song honestly scares me almost to the point of tears. I wish I could link to my comment on this video where I quoted a few of the most terrifying comments on the youtube video of the song. "i have this uneasy feeling about this song. it gives me a feeling that i cant describe. this isnt just a song. something isnt right" "there's evil in this song" "I searched out your comment in specifics after watching a TH-cam video that cited it. Jungle Boogie, sends chills down my spine, almost as if someone is in the same room as me... I’m glad I’m not the only one who has this song in specifics scare the fuck out of them." "I recall reading a comment on an AskReddit thread where someone's wife felt the same way about a certain song, and she ended up dying while that song was playing. I really hope I don't die while Jungle Boogie is playing..." I wish someone would make a video researching this song so we could get to the bottom of this.

About a song causing existential dread/depression/etc....when I was about 6 or 7 (so around '96 or '97) I was laying in bed with my eyes closed, headphones on, listening to my brand new Alanis Morissette Jagged Little Pill CD. I got to the part of "You Oughta Know" towards the end with all the "oooooh ooooh ohhhhhhhhhh's...." It was like I was in a hypnotic or meditative state and had this "vision" of me going down the isle of a church. Not at my wedding, but at MY open. casket. funeral. I was in the casket, facing up, obviously. I couldn't see people just the ceiling of the church. I remember that moment like it was yesterday. Ever since then, up until literally this year, I could only listen to the first half of that song.
Its because music level's on videos and the radio makes you more tired and sad. The government makes you feel this way because its easy to control your feelings and emotions.
@Kristen Goff I know what you mean. I had a similar experience at work. I was standing near the radio and it started playing "Never let me down again" from the band Depeche Mode. I never heard this song before, but I had some sort of "flashback" and I was in a club with red lighting, stood at the bar and there were a few people which I observed, you know. I was looking around like I would wait for something... End of the flashback. I was so confused for a moment. It felt so real. The flashback came just by hearing the beginning of the song, when the beat comes on, I mean... It never happened to me again when I now listen to this song. (Sorry for any mistakes, I hope you get what I wanted to tell.)😅
Story 3: the human mind does a TON of post processing on what it sees, hears and feels. It's part of our adaptability allowing us to recognize danger from few details; this is the instinct that as vaguely mentioned from time to time. If you see, hear or feel something that is even slightly similar to a significant or traumatic even in your live, your mind may attempt to "fill in" details passed on context. This is our "reflexes." Ever think you heard you phone ring or heard a text message chime or the phone vibrate in your pocket, only to discover on inspection that the event never occurred? That's your mind operating so fast that it's filling in data from context before the rest of the data is even input. The vibration sensation is usually caused by natural muscle twitch, since your stabilizer muscles are constantly adjusting your "attitude" (think attitude thrusters on space vehicles). If the right muscle twitches in just the right way, your brain fills in the rest of the information, like a "quick reaction" allowing you to react reflexively to stimuli. When it gets it wrong, there is no way to know until further data is gathered. Same thing can happen with sights and sounds. With sounds, there are actually a TON of noises all around you at all times that your mind filters out, as they're deemed inconsequential. This also happens to be the reason that absolute silence feels uncomfortable. If one of those random noises happens to be out of frequency of the normal sounds you hear around you (those typical noises is also why one tends to feel most comfortable in your personally living space AND why it takes a bit of time for you to feel comfortable in a new living space; you're learning the new sounds), and if that out of place frequency is within a specific range (I don't have any data on how close, but I'd guess around 10-20 hertz, which is actually a VERY narrow gap), then your brain may "process" the sound to the exact frequency of a "known warning sound," making you think you heard the potential danger again.
Every time I hear this story, that's what I'm thinking. His mind is trying to process the sound via what he remembers from childhood. Even as a child, he doesn't remember seeing anything to match the whistling. He only remembers how scared his mom was, which, in turn, would scare any child, even without explanation. What would have been beneficial is if he'd asked his mom why the whistling scared her so much. Perhaps he did and she never spoke up. Who knows. All I know is that, psychologically, he's damaging his psyche by constantly reminding himself of that traumatic event. Not only that, but he even feels threatened by the sound, even though it's shown no signs of doing anything harmful. If anything, it's merely a nuisance. On the other hand, if, perhaps, it's a real person who's stalking the family, then the authorities need to be involved and informed. Did his mother ever do anything to "stop" the "guy" from coming around and whistling? Did she not wanna protect her family? And now that the son is an adult, why doesn't HE do something about it? I know he's scared, but people who fear for their lives tend to call the police. At the fireworks location, he said cops were readily available in the area, so why didn't he call one over or at least send his gf over to get one? The cop would presumably have no prior trauma from the whistling, so he could investigate with no fear or bias. Hell, a police report on the incident, including the time with his mom, would get the ball rolling. And let's be honest, if the whistler wanted to murder anyone in that family, he would have done it ages ago.
The thing with the whistling. What I found unsettling was during the camera footage, there was lightning in the clouds along with the fireworks and whistling.
#3. I totally get this feeling, it's feeling how insignificant you are and being depressed and having an existential crisis all at same time. I get this feeling quite often when learning about something that I'll never get experience like things several billion years from now. I don't think it's anything like the Mandela effect or the conspiracy theory that branched from it. I can totally back up this Redditers story
#4 is probably a creepy pasta. To much weird things, such as thunder clouds moving in on a camping and still going up the river to watch the fire works... Also, in the video there are no sings of some of the things described. And why would the recording cut off as it started to face the described person? PROBABLY because its a story fabricated around a video, and there is no one in a canoe
Tico Ligthart Actually I went camping with my family once with in a situation exactly like that, so it's not that unusual, I mean the rest of the stuff is what makes it special and I didn't deal with that stuff, but everything else is not all that unusual.
In number 3 he mentions Neon Genesis as a show that triggers this feeling of existential dread, and like yea, that's a show literally about the apocalypse. Also Heart shaped box is a very morbid song and the video has a lot of death and dying bodies in it. I kind of feel like getting feelings of existential dread from a show about the end of the world, and from a song who's music video is filled with gore really isn't anything to write home about. Like if he were getting this weird feeling from like the office, or Beatles love songs than yeah maybe that would be an interesting phenomenon. But this is sort of just, disturbing media having it's an intended effect on the audience.
This confused me too at first! But on his post on Reddit, he says that he's asking his girlfriend if she was the one whistling, then telling her "Stop it!" because it was freaking him out and he thought she was doing it to scare him. www.reddit.com/r/AskReddit/comments/3xg36j/serious_what_is_the_creepiest_thing_that_has_ever/cy4f6mm/
he asked his gf, if you are stupid enough to not know that. and how was he supposed to sound? i mean, maybe he became calmer once the figure started to go away. and to A5AP Sweatshirt first of all you probaly got that name from jacob sartorius song and second you are most likely under 10 or just half deaf if that sounded like a bird.
M8 I feel like you really took my comment to heart. Thanks for the mention I appreciate it. Next time maybe don't take things on TH-cam so serious. Just a thought
The whistling noise is a bird that's common in Michigan. I grew up about an hour from Lansing and they're everywhere LOL. Nothing scary about it. It's a Crested Bonnet (or some shit). Sounds like human whistling. No mystery here.
#3 is a real thing. I get it mostly from Soundgarden's 'Black Hole Sun' and Lynard Skynard's 'Tuesday's Gone'. I grew up on Soundgarden so it's mostly nostalgia, that song specifically being THE song of the Summer when I was about 9 or 10. It fills me with a painful dread that's a mix of nostalgia and something else. Tuesday's Gone? Released before I was born and didn't have anyone in my family jamming Skynard on the regular. It makes me want to cry and crawl in a hole at the same time. Ruins me and fills me with the same dred as BHS. I stopped liking the movie after I stopped being a teenager but the scene in 'Dazed and Confused' when the party is over makes my chest hurt. It fills me with a pain I can't describe. Song playing in the scene? Tuesday's Gone.
DannyWilliamH I heard a whistling twice in one day and it sounded like a old spice commercial but no one else I was with heard it, I haven't heard it since yet
The existential dread I can relate. That feeling can be dangerous if you dwell on it too long. You will eventually make yourself anxious and paranoid. It's only good to refer to from time to time.
So true, when I was about 14 few years back, i would constantly dwell on the idea, wondering what happens after death, etc. It became unhealthy and I got bad anxiety from it, until I grew put of it and just decided to live life.
So true, I'm going to make myself sound crazy here but I've done this before, and multiple times... Its scary and horrifying, there was one time where I listened to a song, and repeated it for hours on end. I played a fantasy in my head- over and over. I've always had the problem of eyes tricking me into seeing things, but I've always tried to brush them off even though the unnerving feeling. But then I started talking to them. Conversation to the black figure in my closet or the misty clump of something that looks like a deformed figure in the woods behind my backyard fence. I was in my own world dragging myself out of sanity.. I've done it other times, one summer break I never came out of my room, for a few weeks, I was left in the solitude of darkness and I never spoke just sat and layed and overthinked everything in my life. I've started writing a journal of some sorts one time, talking about the government about how the world was, about my mind, and slowly I was losing myself with questions. I stopped writing slowly after. J had horrific of where I thought everyone was a camera, always watching me. I did everything perfectly lime there was eyes from my windows and through my walls. There were time where I would here bumps and creeks and I would laugh, talk, terrified but willing to take on what I thought were demons haunting me. Im a messed up kid?? ....
Liking and commenting on every single post another person makes is extremely creepy. Doesn't matter if they're famous or not, doesn't matter if you're trolling or saying nice things: You're a creeper.
KingMachinima Astounding! You have managed to expend effort creating a non-random string of characters which usually convey meaning, yet your overall comment was ABSOLUTELY POINTLESS! It is as though all of the industries of mankind were operated in reverse, with great will and endeavor being used to convert items of usefulness into worthless bare materials! you are the antithesis of all that is grand and great about mankinds capacity for thought and self-determination. The one about the songs, mine is paradise by coldplay, but its depressing yet happy. I thought i was the only one who felt like that. That song is like home in the form of the song
5:40 ,.. The video shows no evidence of catching final images of a canoe paddle away. The dialogue does show evidence of someone with possibly a split personality. Notice the whistle does not overlap the person talking, why not? Perhaps the whistler and the person claiming to be followed are one in the same. Left alone at night can allow for a certain level of sensory deprivation in a person. Those who are mentally unbalanced are most likely to be stimulated to act out their odd behavior. In this case triggering a split personality (if the condition exists for this person) Hence these episodes seem only to happen in the dark of night. (He may have inherited this from his Mom in some way. Though without knowing the full story about that night he first heard it cannot be explained. So it’s all speculation on my part). The "sensational" description of the video captured, prior to actually playing it, does not match at all. It was void of drama. In addition, you never heard the girlfriend respond, just his voice, and only between whistles. And there is no evidence of terror of any kind in his voice. Nor any dramatic “volume” that one would be expected to have in their voice, crying out demands for answers to someone in the distance paddling away in a canoe.
But how do explain the obvious volume difference between the man's voice and the whistle? It sounds obvious to me that the whistle was off in the distance a little and he sounded like he was right on the recording device.
Also a canoe cannot stay still in a river that is flowing so fast. Just look at that river , how can someone stay still in front of this guy with a canoe so quietly ? He has to paddle like hell to stay in front of this person.
#3 is common, it has a special name that has to deal with nostalgia but I can't remember it. For me it happens a lot when I listen to certain vaporwave songs (many other people get this feeling when listening to vaporwave also). If I remember correctly it's just nostalgia from the genre, heart shaped box by nirvana is such a classic from the 90's, it would most definitely give you nostalgia, the feeling of sadness comes from the "better times" that you felt like you had when you were younger.
I feel the same shit when I listen to vaporwave songs and shit like that. I know *exactly* what that guy is talking about. It's like such a deep sense of nostalgia that it almost creeps you out. th-cam.com/video/oF9yHO-UUws/w-d-xo.html

There are a couple songs for me that create a nearly exclusive nostalgic feeling:
Better off Alone - Alice DJ
Kids - MGMT
Just thought of a couple more:
Blue - Eiffel 65
Bitter Sweet Symphony - The Verve
Just to clarify, these songs don't create a nostalgic feeling simply because they are songs I listened to/enjoyed a long time ago, it's more of the vibe they give off.
The whistles would be more terrifying if you then heard in the distance, _”Always look on the bright side of life”_

i'm a musician, i can explain the music one;
certain musicians(like myself) will play around with their tuning to create different effects on how the music is "absorbed."
industry standard is A=440 Hz, which is.... ok. some bands have been known to tune slightly above that, to A= 444 Hz or even higher. which creates a harsher sound. it's a very slight difference, but the body reacts very specifically to this kind of thing..
likewise, tuning to A=432 Hz creates a much more cerebral effect. this is why certain bands- even depressing ones- "feel" better. I use this method a LOT when i play a song that's tuned very low(drop G, which is VERY low territory for a guitar.
European symphonies and orchestras also tune to A=432 but is hated here in the US in brass bands and marching bands
Anyone who is looking for genuine answers this doesn't explain it at all hahaha You are just using irrelevant information to back up something completely different. Jungle Boogie and Heart shaped box which were the 2 prime examples were 99% not recorded in this tuning
no hard feelings though buddy, have a beautiful day xxx
there is no scientific backing to the validity of 432 tuning. To claim that a pitch is more emotional and in tune with the universe is a ridiculous statement friend. Here: th-cam.com/video/EKTZ151yLnk/w-d-xo.html

minorking1121 you're being too rational and reasonable this is TH-cam
minorking1121 You can’t be positive that it’s fiction.
minorking1121, the 1st one was real
I think you're right about most of the stories like this, especially the ones that have very fantastical elements to them. There are stories that are actually real though.
minorking1121 creepypastas are fake they get real stuff and ruin it by adding onto them making it its own "legend"
I'm totally behind the guy who was talking about songs and movies/shows bring feelings of depression and dread.
Baron Zemo ikr
Baron Zemo 1ce
I get that from the ending music to Spongebob, weirdly enough, as well as music from the 1920's and 40's. Mines more nostalgia laced with depression, but the sense of extenstial dread is very prominient.
I Cant play some games too anymore Cause of a similar feeling, not dread but sadness from the memories connected

Amazing, and terrifying.
Its because music level's on videos and the radio makes you more tired and sad. The government makes you feel this way because its easy to control your feelings and emotions.

@Kristen Goff
I know what you mean.
I found the rick and morty fan
Me on adderall
That’s some very interesting stuff! I love learning about stuff like this
You must be really fun at parties lol
They did mention a thunder head moving in.

But on his post on Reddit, he says that he's asking his girlfriend if she was the one whistling, then telling her "Stop it!" because it was freaking him out and he thought she was doing it to scare him. www.reddit.com/r/AskReddit/comments/3xg36j/serious_what_is_the_creepiest_thing_that_has_ever/cy4f6mm/
Heki Kahni it was a bird
he asked his gf, if you are stupid enough to not know that. and how was he supposed to sound? i mean, maybe he became calmer once the figure started to go away. and to A5AP Sweatshirt first of all you probaly got that name from jacob sartorius song and second you are most likely under 10 or just half deaf if that sounded like a bird.
Thank you so much. I just looked it up and yes, it sounds exactly like that.

Logan Nichols holy shit I might’ve fucked up and made myself anxious I’m serious tho
So true, when I was about 14 few years back, i would constantly dwell on the idea, wondering what happens after death, etc. It became unhealthy and I got bad anxiety from it, until I grew put of it and just decided to live life.
Falcon have u looked into religion?
You sir, are the mirror image of a meaningful entity, lower than base matter, lower than oblivion, because unlike the brutish deterministic plasma of the unreasoning cosmos, you CHOSE to be without value or worth. Or in the parlance of thine own ilk: LOL N0 UR GAYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!!!11ONE!!!!!ELEVENTY!!!!11!

The one about the songs, mine is paradise by coldplay, but its depressing yet happy. I thought i was the only one who felt like that. That song is like home in the form of the song
My song is Baker Street...i get the weirdest sad feeling, almost sorrow but its a song that feels like home... I cant explain it accurately..

Or it's just fake, right?
Its a fake story posted to r/nosleep
Psycho, anyone?
#3 is common, it has a special name that has to deal with nostalgia but I can't remember it. For me it happens a lot when I listen to certain vaporwave songs (many other people get this feeling when listening to vaporwave also). If I remember correctly it's just nostalgia from the genre, heart shaped box by nirvana is such a classic from the 90's, it would most definitely give you nostalgia, the feeling of sadness comes from the "better times" that you felt like you had when you were younger.
Hauntology?
Deja vu?
DEJA VU! I'VE JUST BEEN IN THIS PLACE BEFORE
I feel the same shit when I listen to vaporwave songs and shit like that. I know *exactly* what that guy is talking about. It's like such a deep sense of nostalgia that it almost creeps you out. th-cam.com/video/oF9yHO-UUws/w-d-xo.html
I think this is the Reddit post that he was talking about www.reddit.com/r/Existentialism/comments/6wy0aa/do_certain_songsmusic_give_you_existential_dread/
The songs there are just like what he said.
Oh... my god. The thing about the music. I’ve always had that feeling about Eternal Flame by The Bangles and I have NO IDEA why.
