I Built an Indoor Rainforest for a Zoo

- For as long as I can remember, I've imagined designing beautiful naturalistic setups, for cool animals, that people may enjoy in person. I wasn't sure if or when it would happen, but it did. After months in the making and I'm so excited to finally share it with you. This is the journey of how I created a 3-in-1 tarantula exhibit for Butterfly Pavilion in Westminster, Colorado.
Butterfly Pavilion is the world's first AZA accredited, stand-alone, non-profit invertebrate zoo in the world. They are a leader in local and global invertebrate research, education, and conservation, with a focus on protecting these animals for the future.

A huge thanks to the companies that helped make this installation possible! They were all kind enough to donate products/materials for the build.

We've been planning this for months now and it's one of those videos/projects that really brings things full circle. It's something I've always imagined, but to see it for myself after installation was a surreal experience, to say the least. I was also glad to share my abilities with an organization doing a lot of conservation efforts with invertebrates. Plus, I don't intend to keep tarantulas myself, so it was cool to have the opportunity to work with them.
Thank you so much for your support over the years! I work extremely hard to do what I do, but it wouldn't be possible without your support (views, comments, likes, etc). This was literally a bucket list item for me! Appreciate you all so much. Enjoy the video and have a great weekend SerpaSquad! 💚
You’re the best Tanner
Tanner I ask whenever you post for around 2 months but can you build a darkwater setup for a blue and purple crayfish with purple and blue tetras. Your fan, Lawson your videos are my favorite I look forward to them every week if you do it I'll buy some merchandise from you
Planning what bro?!?!?! Cork, eco earth and walmart plants???
Just got to check it out in person, and they all look great!! It's so cool to be able to see a Serpa Design do close to home. I hope you do more stuff there!
@parkerbanks3777 this setup is cool but you ain't seen nothin yet if you think it's really impressive
You say “Tailless whip scorpion” but I hear “Taylor Swift scorpion”. And I’m here for it! Great build!
When he said that I was thinking, I knew she was famous but dam.
I heard that too!
Rewound the video 3 times then looked at comments for comradarie...lol ty
Exactly...it's a conspiracy to get you to vote Democratic. Don't fall for the scorpions.
I mean she is a scorpion too irl no?
I've been going to the Butterfly Pavillion for as long as I can remember. My daugther and I were there a few weeks ago and we noticed the new installation. We spent a good amount of time looking and admiring the work. I've been following you for about a year now and your videos got me into the hobby of building terrariums. When we walked away from the exhibit, I thought "I should go visit SerpaDesign to see if there are any new videos." Low and behold, you're the one who built them! I have so much gratitude for you and the work that you do. I've learned so much from your videos. You truly inspried me and now making terrariums has become something I am passionate about.
Hey Tanner! I love these kinds of builds, because it is so clear how passionate you are about these animals and your hobby.
Totally agree with you!
I agree as well
Butterfly Pavillion got scammed. Cork and Walmart plants. Didn't replicate their natural environment. Eco earth goes bad in a year.
I love how this looks like one big tank but they are safely separated. This is just stunning! These little critters are in heaven.
As someone who grew up going to the butterfly pavilion constantly to see the bugs, this is INCREDIBLY COOL!
I love how you reached out to so many friends to make this beautiful exhibit possible for a non profit without costing them a lot of money. What a perfect way to make the most of your position as an influential person in the hobby!
Tanner is the best!
@@charlie_moorcroft FACTS! 🥰
Working in reptile conservation is hard enough, i cant imagine the work that goes into inverts! From changing the mind of the public to working with smaller and sometimes more fragile animals etc. it boggles the mind, and i send my thanks to the Butterfly Pavillion for such important work! Also youre stuff is awesome as per usual :)
This project is so wholesome and amazing. I love your principle to put the needs of the animals first. With that every enclosure you build is beautiful and well designed and executed. I love to see your experience and hard work come into fruition.
Ahhh! I’m so glad you got to work with The Butterfly Pavilion! I grew up visiting them and I have amazing memories of their butterfly rainforest, tarantulas, and bees! I still live in CO, so I look forward to visiting the Pavilion and seeing your work. I think this project is amazing, and I can’t wait to see more of the work you do.
If I could build an enclosure half this amazing for my Bird Eating Tarantula I would be over the moon. This channel gives so many ideas and tips to do at home.
The butterfly pavillion!!!! Omg I live by that
This is so crazy! This place is like a half mile from my house! I must have gone like the week before you were there because I knew they were about to add a new enclosure, but I had no idea you were the one to add it! I might have to go check it out later today!
Congratulations SerpaDesign and everyone who participated in this incredible build! How exciting to watch your talents being broadcast to an even wider audience. I can’t imagine how proud you must be to have an installation at such a highly esteemed location. I’m thrilled watching you achieve your dreams.
The Taylor Swift scorpion is crazyyy
What an amazing display this is! At 5:38 I misheard you and thought you said "Taylor Swift scorpions" 😂 that would be a strange species. Love your videos!
And at 2:38 too 😂
I absolutely adore all 'pink toe' species, I think you did them justice by creating such a beautiful home for such a beautiful tarantula!
the way it looks like one environment, yet it's three different settings. truly amazing. possibly best build yet so far!
Some impressive project management skills by Serpa here, coordinating so many moving pieces to come together in one impressive result.
Man I wish I could afford a partitioned vivarium like this for my ispods, imagine having multiple species right next to each other! Looks absolutely stunning!
I bet you could put something together on a smaller scale. It may not be as amazing as what Tanner does, but it will be yours. 😊 I encourage you to believe in yourself!
I have a nice glass terrarium currently! It's more about the partitioned variation, those are very expensive here as only sold by breeders for breeders. Of which I am not one.
Why not partition it yourself.
Buy a cheap aquarium/terrarium and some glass panels.
I never tried to cut and work with glass by myself but Serpa has shown his tips for that in so many videos.
I think you can do it.
Just try it and learn while you are doing it.
Think about how you can do it and not about why you could not.
I know we are not like Serpa but we can try our best with his inspiration as help.
I bet you will feel amazing after you tried and created a beautiful diy terrarium.
Wish you a nice day☀️
@@privato9238 Unfortunately I am visually impaired and know that that would not go well. BUT perhaps I can ask the local shop if they'd add partitions for some extra cash without it being that expensive.
@@EvanBear Where - ish are you located? I would totally love to try out some of these techniques but I don't really want a terrarium in my small space. I'm in Washington State. Maybe we can help each other out!
I’m from Colorado, have followed you for years, and just told my husband we HAD to go make a trip to the butterfly pavilion to see your installation. this is amazing Tanner! well done! so excited to see these creatures living in one of your awesome vivariums.
World needs more of your enclosures out there.functional and beautiful. But perfect for the intended Animal
We absolutely love seeing you live your best life!!!!!! ❤❤❤❤
So excited to see this my friend. It was a blast and can’t wait to do it again! Let’s gooo 🎉😊
Interestingly, being a subscriber to your channel inspired me to create a naturalistic bioactive vivarium in my workspace. It was originally intended for a sorority of fancy mice, but currently houses one rescued male. Coming from a 'traditional' and small mouse cage where despite having lots of 'commercial' enrichmnent but was he was seldom seen and uninterested in interacting with humans, the change in his behaviour in a naturalistic environment has been incredible. He forages, hunts, burrows, nests and actively seeks out human interaction. While researching bioactive enclosures for his species, everything pointed to 'no' - I wasn't even able to find examples of bioactive habitats in zoological settings.
So from Mr Yeet (the mouse) and myself to you - a big thank you for inspiring me to think carefully about his needs and how they could be provided for in a more natural way ❤
Love your dedication to having so many animals!!!! It inspires me to have as many as you do and your creative knowledge.
I swear I heard you say “Taylor Swift Scorpions!”
I heard it too
same
I was literally hoping you'd do some tarantula enclosures after watching you make the enclosure for the fisher spider you found, so this is perfect!
So cool to see a build which encourages future generations to love science, ecology, and conservation!
Fantastic build, Tanner, and a great stated mission for the channel. Congratulations on reaching such a milestone in your creative journey.
i think this is the best done "product placement" (sponsored) video i have seen in a long time. you dont hide them, but showing them feels not shoved in our face. also, as usual your character presents things in such a calm way, that the products seem worth it! good job. i feel inspired by your separation-but-not layout. i especially enjoy the two identical plants on the right and middle enclosures that are close to each other but separated, and make it look like there is no separation. i am going to built a two tank riparium (2x 24l) and i want to copy what you did. thanks for the inspiration! love from switzerland
It made me kind of emotional to watch this! You can see the care you put into every enclosure you make
I love how you can make this look like 1 cohesive build with 3 very different specific functions. Simply amazing
Amazing, what an incredible collaboration! Seems like all the stars aligned, and you absolutely delivered
What a beautiful build!! Thank you so much to the Butterfly Pavillion for this opportunity and another thank you to all the donators!
What an incredible build! This one's really special--Butterfly Pavilion is a really special place, and one of the reasons that I love invertebrates so much and watch this channel in the first place. This really takes me full circle, wow.
Ive been wondering when you were going to do display work for a zoological biz. Great job!
Its 5:30 am and I am so gonna stay up to watch this beauty! Thank you for uploading and showing your work. Its so lovely and neat.
I want to add that this channel had really helped me appreciate invertabrates so much more, even spiders .
Wow wow wow! What an amazing build for amazing creatures! Thanks for bringing us along!
Thank you, Tanner. Always a nice change of pace when you go on a "field trip" to another facility to assist their team with a project.
The most ingenious build yet I think!
The Pinktoe is absolutely ADORABLE
i love the butterfly pavilion! so cool that you got to work with them and the result looks amazing!!
You never fall short from ‘Amazing work’ 🎉
Absolutely stunning, you never cease to amaze me, and I'm sure many others with how beautiful these are, I can't wait till every Saturday to watch your videos. Keep doing your passion and showing us how beautiful these creatures can be.
Just donated to Butterfly Pavilion, as a way to encourage these organizations, and collaborations such as this one. Great work!
The pink toed tarantula was so cute! ❤❤❤❤
You’re the difference I love that you can tell you love animals there’s a lot of bad on TH-cam and I’m not here to be negative I just want to appreciate you for always being yourself and making these 100% genuine videos I come as soon as I see your notifications because I know I’ll be moved my the video… thank you!
💯
He’s one of the few TH-camrs who actually puts animals in set ups that they belong in
Im really glad you made friends. Watching that video of you digging your goldfish pond and saying the work is easier with friends then no one showing up was sad.
Thank you for always being awesome Tanner 💚 and putting the animals first
Congratulations! That is so exciting. They sound like an awesome zoo. Really great to see all the sponsors contributing to conservation like this.
Hey! I've been a fan of the channel for a few years now, and have been a volunteer at the colorado butterfly pavilion for almost a year now. I thought it was so cool to see your work in person, amd to be able to see it regularly. you've inspired me to own more interesting animals, and get back into my love of inverts. I would have never become a volunteer without your videos and inspiration. Thank you for being you and making cool stuff and sharing it with the world! Also thank you from everyone at the pavilion for your amazing artwork and home for some cool critters for others to learn about too.
Yes!!!!!! I've been waiting for a tarantula build from you for so long! Outstanding build!!!
It's beautiful & I'm so happy you got to live your dream!
So proud of you Tanner, you've come sooo far! Incredible to see you sharing your passion with others ❤❤
Congratulations Tanner! I'm so happy to see you doing this full time!
Amazing enclosures. I love how it looks like one but is three.
your tone and word choice convey so much empathy and love for animals and what you do. congrats on getting to do this. its a bit like having a painting displayed in a museum, i would imagine.
I am amazed! This video omg I love seeing you and other companies make these. Just wow really really awesome
Tanner, congratulations on an awesome build. Your naturalistic designs are fantastic, if I had something like that I would just stare at it for hours on end. I could only imagine what it must be like at your home… fantastic.
Congratulations, can't imagine how exciting and satisfying that was! Looks great!
Tanner! Look at you helping change the world and bringing people together for animals ❤️
Thank you for all the inspiration you share. This is most likely my favorite set up so far!
So happy to see you growing and cooperating with these educational assets. Keep up the great content buddy!! Thank you
I think this is one of my favorites. The seamless look despite it being three enclosures, while it considers each animals very different needs is amazing. Loved hearing about their mission and seeing you excel at something you’re passionate about that the public can admire too. Just awesome!
This was so awesome! Thank you for sharing, this is really awesome. It’s been amazing watching you grow and expand; it just doesn’t stop getting more amazing and brilliant!
Bravo! The good you do doesn’t go unnoticed! You truly are an inspiration! Keep up the great work!
I feel like this is opening a lot of doors for you in the future! I hope you get more opportunities to do public displays like this. So wholesome! Next time I’m in Colorado I hope I can visit and see it
What an epic collaboration! It's wonderful to see animals people are afraid of being spotlighted like this. They are such fascinating creatures and I've been keeping tarantulas and other inverts for over 30yrs.
watching this video brings me so much joy. I'm almost the only person around my area who care and love invertebrates and watching your videos makes me feel less alone.
The continuity between the three partitions is so amazing! What a great work!!
Just phenomenal Tanner. I particularly admire how you considered the similar yet different needs of each species so carefully. Breathtaking.
Amazing as always. Love to see your channel & business grow like this. Can't wait for things to come. Thanks Tanner!
You are truly an artistI! I’m so proud of your growth and accomplishments! So beyond excited for you!!!
This was a very kewl video. Seeing all the people you have worked with come together and make a project for the public was awesome. Very interesting. Thank you for the great vid.
Great build. I love the cohesiveness of the 3 tanks to make it look like one.
ive been watching you for years and it's wild to see how far you've come. this is so cool !
Aw this video was so wholesome! The enclosure turned out absolutely amazing too :) I gotta say, your content has really inspired me to create a naturalistic environment for my fish. Keep up the good work!
This was such an awesome build! Congrats on getting to do such a big collaboration! Just a sign of how big your channel is getting, you've made all these connections and now you're getting to put them together to do bigger projects! Keep up the awesome work ❤
What an awesome thing!!! Looks like a great place. The build turned out just perfect with that cork bark tying everything together, it looks very naturalistic and the animals seem happy to settle in!
I love the butterfly pavilion! I live right down the road from it and I once officiated a wedding there in the rainforest room. What a fun video! I can't wait to check out this build in person.
So well executed!! finding a way to create the illusion of the land and the log being whole and moving through the tanks was brilliant! such a cool design and such a major achievement!!
I bet they were so happy with your work. You never fail to amaze xx
I've been watching your videos for yeeeeears and it is SO EXCITING that you came to my home town in Westminster!! I can't wait to see your build in person at the Butterfly Pavilion!
You've given me so much good instruction and so many great ideas over the years. Thank you!
I have whipscorpions here in my garden in Gambia, West Africa. Got the fright of my life the first time I came face to face with one, but they're such cool creatures! I love this set up. 💚
Congratulations, you did a beautiful job! We are lucky to have your videos. God Bless, please keep up the great work. Love n prayers 🙏🏽 ❤️
Ive grown up with this in my area and its been fun watching you for a good hamdful of years now and a bit wild to see you do something in my back yard
Not sure how I missed this video 3 months ago but I'm glad to have stumbled across it now. I'm super excited for each step of your journey Tanner, I know that you have inspired me to create not only terrariums but aquariums and paludariums also. So I am just thrilled that the butterfly pavilion had you work on this build, I'm sure it would be just wonderful to visit and see it in person. I was so keen to see how you worked through this project especially with the added research into new animal types and working alongside others to create this beautiful build . Always so very impressive, thank you so much for sharing!
So cool that you and Jimmy were here in CO! I love the Butterfly Pavilion and haven't been in a few years, so hopefully I'll get a chance to check this out in person soon. Glad you got to see the breeding room!
because of you i got my first plants from outside and do like one of those diy eco systems in a jar around 2 years ago. It made me so happy and brought me the joy and energy through my depression. I started earning money and bought even more plants for my home and took interest in learning their names and what they like etc.
Thank you a lot for what you have done for everyone here and your amazing creativity
Wow not only did the tank blow me away, but the ending talk got me in my feels! Love the content! You inspire millions!
I love this. I work in museums and am making an exhibit right now. Your videos always get me thinking on how your methodologies could work in the public sphere for education and conservation!
I LOVE THIS EPISODE!!! I’m so excited to see what other exhibits you’ll have a hand in!!!
Tanner, your builds are just amazing! I’m truly jealous how well they turn out!
This is so beyond amazing. I would absolutely love to visit this place some day and it will be going on my vacation wish list now for sure. Beautiful work and thank you to everyone involved in animal and ecosystem education 🕊️🌿!!
thats very cool, an amazing opportunity and so wonderful all those companies came together to help out :D
Yes!!! This is so sick tanner I've been waiting for this pink toes are my favorite spoders this setup looks so cool.
Prayer plants are some of my favorites. I loved seeing you incorporate them into a build, i think they will do great in a terrarium setting.
Thanks for the great content
