Damn....we were here in June, and I missed this. My girlfriend was born on Terceira, Azores. We grew up in California, and have known each other since the 70’s . She was the neighborhood hottie, I was a pipsqueak ignored by girls. It took me thirty years to win her heart, but I did...we’ve been together for nine years and are inseparable. I promised her she would visit Portugal, where she was born but hasn’t seen since she was 6. She woke up on her 53rd birthday on the island of her birth, and we both fell in love with the country and it’s people. Life is funny.
Another good one. I love the sunset light. Reminds me of the smoky sunsets we get out west in the summer. This market also reminds me a bit of the Mercato Centrale in Firenze but much bigger and less gritty. Thanks -Henry

The oldest capital city after Athens, much older than Rome, Paris or London. Big history in Lisbon, the 1st global capital of the world were sailors left to discover the world. It started has a Phoenician village, then Greek after that a Visigotic city, then Roman, Arab and Christian. More than 2000 years...

Lisbon was a Roman city, called Ulissipo, long before being Visigothic; It was Christian long before the Moors (whom you keep referring to as Arabs when they were, in fact, predominantly Berbers) invaded it! It did not start as a Phoenician village as there is archeological evidence showing at least seven centuries of human inhabitance BC, and there is absolutely no evidence of ever being Greek! Both the Greek and the Phoenicians (Carthaginians) established trading posts predominantly on the East coast of Iberia, on the Balearic Islands, and on the southern coast as far west as the Bay of Cadiz, but there is no evidence of either one or the other ever establishing trading posts on the western coast of the peninsula. People like you have a tendency to think that nobody lived in the Iberian Peninsula before all those people that you mentioned invaded it!
