Surprisingly enough, you're right.
Real Bringer died in Hollow Zero after giving his protective gear for Zhu Yuan.
Fake Bringer himself said on the last day before they reached the city, he became infected and was abandoned by the very survivors he was protecting.

@@youidontaaa At the start of Chapter 5 Sarah asks what happened to that leader of theirs, Bringer says "on the last night before we reached the city, he became corrupted and was abandoned by the very same survivors he was protecting." this sounds a bit random to ask If it's not actual Bringer being corrupted.
Also, this lines up with what others said, including his change of personality after leaving Hollow Zero.

Remember, Real Bringer gave up his Ether Protective Gear for Zhu Yuan and fake Bringer even said how Real Bringer became corrupted on the last night before they reached the city.
