  • The Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace: A Practical and Premium 7-Seater SUV
Volkswagen’s Tiguan has earned a reputation as a well-rounded compact SUV. Now with the Tiguan Allspace, VW has stretched things out to add a third row and space for up to seven occupants. The result is an attractive package blending practicality, premium feel and the latest tech. But does it have what it takes to compete with alternatives like the Skoda Kodiaq and SEAT Tarraco?
On the outside, the Tiguan Allspace looks nearly identical to the standard 5-seat Tiguan. But an 11 centimeter stretch in wheelbase and body means improved interior space. And with its familiar lines and sharp styling, it retains the handsome, grown-up look that sets it apart from boxier rivals. Elegant trim lines and bountiful chrome accents add further upscale appeal.
Inside, occupants are treated to a thoughtfully designed cabin trimmed in soft-touch plastics with piano black and metal-look finishes. The crisp digital instrument panel and central touchscreen look suitably high-tech and controls are clearly laid out for intuitive use. Optional Vienna leather and ambient lighting provide further premium pampering. Rear passengers benefit from generous legroom and nicely supportive seats, though the third row is still best left to kids.
Power comes from a choice of gas and diesel engines ranging from a responsive 148 horsepower 1.5-liter turbo to a high-output 242 horsepower turbocharged 2.0-liter. Both front and all-wheel drive setups are offered, the latter boosting foul weather grip when properly equipped. Though no speed demon in any guise, most models feel sprightly enough for daily driving while balancing solid fuel economy of over 30 mpg combined. A 7-speed dual-clutch auto handles gearchanges smoothly.
Behind the wheel the Tiguan Allspace delivers a quiet and comfortable ride reminiscent of more expensive Audis, its well-damped suspension absorbing bumps and lean with poise. Light but accurate steering lends it unexpected agility for a larger SUV, lending confidence through turns. And driver assistance tech like adaptive cruise and active lane keeping stands ready to lend an additional hand on long highway drives.
Though passenger and cargo space falls short of supremely spacious rivals like the Kodiaq, the Tiguan still provides a generous 640 liters behind the second row and over 1,700 liters with all rear seats stowed. And accessing the third row is easier than in many competitors thanks to sliding middle row seats with clever easy-entry levers. Cabin storage solutions abound as well with dual glove boxes, center console bins, and large door pockets with room for water bottles.
One area where VW trails slightly behind is in warranty coverage. At 3-years/36,000 miles basic and 5-years/60,000 miles powertrain, the coverage falls a year short of Hyundai, Kia and Toyota rivals. But strong safety scores and reliability ratings help offset concerns.
Base “Life” models start at around $43,000 including destination, in range with entry-level versions of Japanese and Korean competitors. But they already include features like 8-inch infotainment with wireless Apple Carplay/Android Auto, panoramic sunroof, heated front seats, and advanced driving aids. And range-topping versions approach luxury levels of amenities inside and out.
