    You say lots of squares,,, I say lots of built-in shelves! Great job!

    It was my understanding that when Board and Batten was put on 'green' or wet that they only put one nail in the center of each board left and right and at each cross board in order to allow the edges to shrink and grow at will underneath of the battons that are also nailed in the center and cover the gap. I also understand that when green the gap is about a nails width to allow for the expansion and shrinkage. Lastly my reasearch showed that some(not all) people would come back after a few years and then add more nails. Although with Cedar I don't know how much movement or how long you let them dry? 1" per year here. Great job and great channel.

    Think of the the center of the tree as the structure and the sapwood on the outside is where the “life” resides (nutrients flow, etc.). The tree is dying and it will likely be blown over at some point. On our latest episode (abandon shed to tiny house) we had an 80ft cherry that was essentially the same, but only 30-40 feet from our house! We cut it down and hope to mill it and many others to finish the interior and board and baton siding.
    You guys are doing an amazing job. This is exactly what I wanted to do with my children. It got vetoed, but my son and I are doing it together 20 years later! Keep up the good work!

    A tip about using air powered framing nailers....you might already know this. I learned it the hard way.
    When shooting nails like you are at 27:35 always keep your "off hand" at least the distance the nail is long away. The nails for those things aren't as rigid as nails used for a hammer and can bend, sometimes extremely, when they hit knots or different grains of wood. I was framing a wall and using my left hand to hold the horizontal piece as you are. Had a nail go through the stud then turn and come out the side of the horizontal piece. Put a pretty good divot in two of my fingers. They healed but I definitely learned a lesson there.

      Hey Mark - right on. I don't even like being in the line of fire, but I'm sure I got a little too comfortable over the 5,000 nails we fired into the shed. You are right though. It happens when you're not expecting it and safety needs to be administered at all times; especially with that nail gun.

    I enjoy watching this so much, I can’t quit commenting.
    The 2” thick lumber may be overkill from a material standpoint, but I REALLY like how it looks. This is the most beautiful building frame I’ve ever seen.

    Have you thought about using a "metal detector" to find other "treasures"? I bet you will find all kinds of historic items - perhaps even more bottles if they have metal caps. As for your Civil War Canister Shots, more than likely the canister blew up not far away, spreading the shot everywhere. One has to wonder how many people were caught in the explosion and died where you're standing. As for your apple tree, it's probably a crab apple. Apple trees are trimmed after the leaves have fallen off - that's when the sap has gone back down to the roots. Looking ahead, always check out Habate for great buys on all types of building supplies - even windows, doors and paint. God bless - love your channel.

    Curious why the vertical instead of horizontal installation for the siding?
    Thinking about how horizontal siding is installed with overlap…. It may be to allow for the wood to shrink as it dries.
    Last thought - next time the tractor is out, couldn’t you haul lumber by hand in your cart instead of carrying it?
    I realized why I’m making so many comments, I *REALLY* wish I was doing this. I envy the life you’ve built for yourselves.

      Thank you, Kevin! Love hearing comments like that. It makes me feel just a little less crazy - haha! It's refreshing when someone really understands why we're doing all this. Now to answer your question... board and batten is a very old farm architectural style and I really wanted to celebrate its tradition on my shed. The old timers used to cut their boards, hang it green, let it dry for a bit and cover the shrinkage gaps with the battens and that's exactly what we did. It's funny you find this style on newer expensive homes, being its tradition was just building with what you've got.

    The horizontal (well mostly) boards that are on walls are called "girts"--the same things on the roof are called "purlins" (perpendicular to the slope of the roof).

    I'm not sure of your region but here in the northern panhandle of W.Virginia, I was told the best time to trim an apple tree is the last week in February. Your building is looking great, gonna be good and sturdy. I like it.

    The last frost probably killed the blooms the previous year. The tree is basically done and dying. I would cut it down before it falls down in a good wind.

    Nice progress! Npt to be Mr. Critical but you don't have any squares but you do have a lot of rectangles. I've also noticed when you are pushing the saw mill forward some times the right and left side are racking a bit and not moving together. That could also cause some rippling in the saw cut.

    • @WalnutsandWineberries
      @WalnutsandWineberries  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Tim! Haha - yes you're correct. That gave me a chuckle because it's something I would totally think about myself. Regarding the sawmill, I believe that's a big design flaw. It desperately needs some more support between each side which could be easily accomplished with some Maker Pipe. I love the texture it leaves though. You pay handsomely for that "rough sawn lumber" at the big box stores.

    On those popular board let them split, and use colored epoxy, like TotalBoat, to fill the gap and cover them to make Charcuterie boards to sell. Just an idea.

      We might transform this "shed" into a mini guest house in the future after the house is built for visitors that want to stay for an extended amount of time. We were thinking we would insulate at that point. We'll be sure to include the girls next episode. :)

    I use a bench grinder to sharpen my blades as well. Running a Woodland Mill 22. I considered the Harbor Freight one, and it looks like it is working well for you! Do you have any advice from your experience about building with green wood?

    • @WalnutsandWineberries
      @WalnutsandWineberries  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'd build with green wood again, but pay attention to establishing an initial even cut from one end of the log to the other, regarding the pith location. It helps tremendously with boards weening and cupping. The board and batten style is perfect for building with green wood, since the batton's main purpose is to cover the gap. I'd also make the siding a little thicker and do 1 in. instead of 3/4. Good luck to you!

    So, what was the reason for the warranty service run on the RK24? As a soon to be owner of one... I've got to know these things. LOL Great video! You guys are rocking it!

    • @WalnutsandWineberries
      @WalnutsandWineberries  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Haha, I understand the concern. I had a bad steering cylinder. Basically, the steering wheel would spin and spin and not limit out. Probably too many sharp turns while carrying heavy logs. Nevertheless, all fixed now and didn't cost me a dime.

  • @johnbowen1493
    @johnbowen1493 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    You need to prune that apple tree and fill the truck with foam or cement to protect it from any further rot. It needs pruning bad! Put some fertilizer around it too so it has some food to use. Fruit tree spikes or fruit tree granules will do wonders for it but make sure it is not for citrus. You need fruit tree feed not citrus tree feed.

    Essa Serragem do corte da Madeira( o pó da Madeira com pequenos pedaços) de guardado depois de sexo em sacos serve para " cama das galinhas " para que as mesmas não adoeçam! Também podem misturar uma quantidade com cola Branca e fazer uma pasta para tampar frestas e buracos indesejáveis!

      Thanks! It's just a steering cylinder that's being replaced and I was told it will be covered under warranty. The steering wheel would spin and spin and not limit out. That's one thing about RKs. They have a great warranty.

  • @HoneyDoHomestead

    The tree is in decline. it has, maybe 3 years left if I had to throw a number out there. It's alive because the "heart wood" of any tree is dead. The living part of the tree is the tender wood that is just beneath the bark - that is what feeds nutrients up to the branches.

    • @WalnutsandWineberries
      @WalnutsandWineberries  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We keep routing it on. It surprisingly shot out some apples this year that we're looking forward to pick in a month or so. Maybe I'll keep a few seeds so we can replant its bloodline in case we lose it. It's strange how the tree looked so dead and magically came back to life after we landscaped around it and gave it some room to breathe. Maybe a nitrogen boost? Maybe it was lonely? Who knows...

    • @HoneyDoHomestead
      @HoneyDoHomestead 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@WalnutsandWineberries If you really like the flavor and want more, you may want to consider grafting; since the seeds aren't guaranteed to look/taste the same.

      Hi Kirk, I drew the plans in SketchUp and went off of those. Sorry I don't have a 2D version for layout, but it is pretty simple. The wall dimensions are 12x16 with 9 ft ceiling height and the roof is a simple gable 9/12 pitch. BTW, I highly recommend 9 ft ceilings in a shop. That extra foot is nice when you're mounting air lines and drop cords from your ceiling to make a more productive workshop. Good luck to you.

    • @WalnutsandWineberries
      @WalnutsandWineberries  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A good coat of primer and paint is all you need as long as it's caulked to prevent the water from seeping in. If you want to go with a natural, non-painted finish, they sell clear wood sealers in various finishes. I'm a fan of satin, personally. Good luck!

      @@WalnutsandWineberries OK thanks I was thinking of nailing it on wet? But i dont know much about it .. I also was thinking of just using the bark for siding ill be going over top plywood?

    • @WalnutsandWineberries
      @WalnutsandWineberries  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nailing it updated wet, or "green", is fine. I did that on my board and batten siding. It will shrink though, so you need to account for that with the width of your battens. I can't advise on bark unfortunately. It would have to be super fresh to be usable. You usually only see that on bushcraft stuff as roofing material. Hope that helps.
