    Beautiful images, love those dragonfly shots and thank you for sharing your thoughts! I love to hear what they are because you've not bought into all the hype that some photographers have with the newest gear or the most expensive and for me it's obvious that they are marketing for the camera companies. So take care and be safe out there....

      Thank you Frederick! No, I buy my own stuff..... and although I do like some of the bells the new stuff has, knowing how to use the old stuff I THINK makes for a more well rounded photographer. I really hope that new photographers find it and realize that it takes a lot of practice and knowing how to use your gear. Going back to a DSLR was a lot of fun for that reason. I had to think and calculate each shot - it was AWESOME. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! 🙏🤗💖

I buy or rent all my stuff and just look at it as a tool. Hey - I am my own sponsor!!! 🤣 I also hope let newer photographers that no piece of gear is perfect - you have to learn how to use it and that takes practice. Thanks for sharing the video John. Great shots as always. I think if I had the R7 (and I almost did pre order it) I’d have that 100-500mm just live on it for its versatility and light weight. Expensive I know, but great performance. Hope you have a great weekend buddy cheers 🍻 📸🙏

      I tested the 100-500 only on a R6 (with and without 2x TC), but i was absolutely not impressed.
      I hoped for really "usable" images with 2x TC, then i would have probably got "just" the RF 1-5 +2x TC for wildlife, but since it performed poor with 2x TC (on my 26MP RP definately not really sharp, on the R6 with 20MP at best "usable" sharp)
      But its pretty much a "impossible" wish... to have everything in one lens and that not heavy or bad.
      I got instead the 100-500L:
      - Sigma 150-600C (my universal lens on R7)
      - canon 100-400 II (it was too cheap to say no, pretty much my "universal" when i want handheld video too or the sigma is just too heavy/annoying)
      - Canon RF 800 F11.... the lens i bought to go "properly" in wildlife any my first proper (super)tele, better IQ than the RF 100-500 with 2x TC for 700€ 2nd hand!
      Paid for all together still less than the RF 1-5L alone costs and i have even advantages with the EF 100-400 II (bigger aperture), Sigma 150-600C (more reach, better bokeh), RF 800 (reach, stabilizer and IQ, anything else sucks)
      And lets be honest, just a 100-400 II alone is barely worse than a 1-5L. Slightly more weight and size is the only "disadvantage" im willing to accept since it cost less than 1/3 of a new RF 1-5L!
      I really dont want to bash the 100-500L, its a GREAT LENS, probably one of canons best lenses yet, but its really hard to justify, i guess 99% of the photographers/videographers out there are better off with adapting the predecessor, the EF 100-400 II (its still a damn good lens! 0,98m MFD!) and probably look also in a professional/big aperture 2nd hand tele or 100mm macro with F2,8-F4.

      Adrian!!! Thank you combo is AMAZING and that was my favorite lens. I think going into December, I will rent that again. And I do have to say... worth every penny!! Have fantastic week and thank you for letting me share. 🙏🤗💖

    Nice one Johnny. I really enjoyed it. Just recently got my R7 and just have 2 lenses for it at this point left over from my old gear (sold most). 1: EF 400 F5.6 L. 2: EF 28-135 is (yeah, that crappy old one!). I do plan to invest in some nice glass but I have just had so much fun shooting stuff with these 2 lenses. I cant remember when last I even looked at the crappy zoom. But I got some nice ones already and I am going to take my time before diving into a new lens. I am still coming to grips with many of the new focus features. The R7 completely outclasses my previous 1D3 and 7D . I get crisp shots even at 1/200 on the 400mm. Good thing I dont follow the advice that you get just 20% keeper rate on the 400 due to it not having is etc and you NEED extreme resolution lenses on the R7 (making the crappy zoom completely useless)..I hear you. Work with what you have and be creative. Play to the strengths of what you have and really max that out. It has become fun again. Here in South Africa we are right into summer. I have many birds (including owls, hawks, falcons) , small mammals etc and lovely wild flowers and trees right here on my smallholding. I decided to force myself to shoot what is right here with what I have even if i think there is nothing to shoot and it has really been refreshing so far. Best wishes to you.

      Gerhard Botha!!! Enjoy that 400mm - it works PERFECTLY on the R7. You are shooting at 640mm and that is plenty of reach. Canon's longest zoom lens - the 200-500 on the R5 is only that - 500mm. I have been using all my old lenses and they all work BETTER than they did on the DSLR versions. In fact, there were only two new lenses I really liked. No lens is perfect and no camera is perfect, but the R7 brought back all the old excitement for me too. Enjoy it!!! 🙏💖🤗

    I just added the RF 100-500 to my R7 wildlife setup. It replaced my Sigma 150-600C. I love the RF 100-500. It is sharp and light. I do miss the extra reach at times but I really like being able to focus so much closer.

    • @harrison00xXx
      @harrison00xXx ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ever tried on the Sigma a shorter FL for macro? Its biggest magnification it got on 180mm i think (with anything like 60-80cm MFD), but i mostly use around 300-350mm for macro where its MFD is about 1-1,5m.
      All i really hate on the Sigma is its inferior stabilizer, just "useless" except you have a good stand anywhere where you can keep the camera very still, otherwise for video a tripod is a MUST HAVE. Also the autofocus is a bit slow and buggy on canon mirrorless as known....
      I didnt invest my money into a rf 100-500, instead i took for LESS MONEY (!!!!), 2nd hand ofc:
      - Canon RF 800 F11
      - Canon EF 100-400 II
      - Sigma 150-600C
      RF 800 is a beast for hiking (on full frame, on APS-C its annoying with 1280mm minimum)
      EF 100-400 is my standard/universal/video wildlife lens mostly on full frame
      Sigma 150-600C is mainly on R7 for 240-960mm super universal wildlife (photography!, video only with tripod)

      Jeff - out of all the lenses I have used on my R7, I would have to say that hands down that is the sharpest...... and ..... one I dont YET own. I do believe that a 1.4 tele will work on there for a little more reach and not too much of a loss of light. I did not try it when I rented it...... but there is tomorrow!!! I only had it for a week so I have to get it again..... soon!!! Thank you Jeff!! 🙏💖🤗

  • @Chris_Wolfgram
    @Chris_Wolfgram ปีที่แล้ว

    My favorite lens on my R7 is my RF 800 F11. At a 1280mm equivalent, I "finally" have enough reach... most of the time :) Rarely am I too close. Nothing a couple steps back won't fix :) I rented the RF 100-500, and did not do well with it, but there was evidence for it being a damaged copy {maybe a blessing in disguise, as that saved me a LOT of money :) Anyway, I love the 800 F11 so much, I also bought the 600 F11. So with both the 600 and the 800, plus the R5 FF, and the R7 crop, and also my 1.4 TC, I have a LOT of options, for 600mm all the way up to 1792mm. I keep hoping that Canon will come out with a "glorified version" of the RF 800 F11... like just a little faster, a little shorter MFD, a rotating collar, FF focusing, etc. I'd gladly pay $3 or $4K for such a lens. But I'll never pay $12K or $20K for one of the huge, heavy professional lenses. So if Canon doesn't want to give me that in-between option, that's just $3K or $4K they won't get from me. Thank you Canon :)

    • @JonnyPink65
      @JonnyPink65  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      For me, I much prefer a faster lens, or as fast as I can afford. There is a super expensive EF lens that went under my radar for Canon - the 200-400 F4 with a builtin 1.4 tele. I need to rent that. At some point this summer, I am going to rent one of those RF lenses. I agree with you about stepping back - I do the same thing. 🙏❤🤗

    I'm totally agree with you. There isn't a best lens for everything. It totally depends on what you want to do/photograph/achieve.
    You might need different glass if you are shooting dragonflies birds or moose.
    So far I have used everything from 24 to 500mm on my R7 and I'm superhappy.
    One thing worth mentioning though.
    The last couple of years, until I bought my R7 I was carrying my R5 or my trusty 1DX2 (for really crazy wet weather) a lot coupled with either my 100-400 mk2 or my 500 f4.
    Now I can walk around smiling with my R7 and my 300 2.8 and shoot with basically the same reach as with my 500. And with a setup that is crazy light compared to my 500 coupled with any camera! And it's a 2.8! How about that!
    Anyways, all of my cameras and glass is capable to produce really high end top quality photos every day in the week.
    The weak limiting part producing crappy images is me!
    Great video John.
    And the first 6 seconds is epic 😀

    • @harrison00xXx
      @harrison00xXx ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree with you.
      Im also super happy with the 100-400 II, just its existence was beside other things (air pump, expensive,...) the reason why i never pulled the trigger on a RF 100-500 as awesome this lens is. And then there was a deal i could not withstand. Probably the best lens i ever owned.
      Would you say a 70-200 2.8 replaces partially a 300 2.8 lens and i can keep my gear as it is?
      Since i have the R7 i realized F6.3 and F11 are not "the aperture to go" especially at sunrise and sunset, the 70-200 is often good enough but yeah... 200mm/320 APS-C.
      Is 300mm 2.8 much better for very dark wildlife in forest etc? (as replacement for selling 70-200 F2.8 i like and RF 800 F11 i dont like much anymore)
      Its such a great thing if you got the stuff fair priced/way below the average price... you can just buy the stuff, try it for some months and resell it "easy" enough without a loss. Really wondering why so many people say they buy or have bought the RF 100-500L, this lens will drop that heavily in price/value 2nd hand as soon canon probably get their a** up and make some proper and usable RF-S stuff for the wildlife community! Supporting Canons greed wont make anything better in the future, in fact it gets worse, buying now RF stuff is like saying: "Canon, we love how you abuse us, beat us more!"
      If they dont and care as much as they did until now... RF mount will die out and also lose its value. Anyways, im pretty much still a "EF Fanboy".

    • @rinohals
      @rinohals ปีที่แล้ว

      @@harrison00xXx Hi. Nice to hear your thoughts and experiences.
      If the 70-200mm 2.8 (320mm APSC) replaces the 300mm 2.8 (480mm APSC) I don't know, since it depends on what your needs are, subject to shoot, in what environment etc.
      What I can say is, that for me, the R7 EF300mm f2.8 combo has been a successful choice for shooting wildlife in lowlight and forest environment.
      A couple of times I have even thrown on a 1.4 converter as well (672mm APSC) with good results. And a 672mm f4 still lightweight combo isn't too bad either huh?
      That being said. The R3 5 6 and 7 handle higher iso much better than older cameras and I think that this, and the low weight is the reason for the popularity of the rf100-500 f7.1 at 500mm.
      But I'll tell you, the R3 5 6 and 7 handle f2.8 and f4 lenses just as good, and maybe even better. 🙂
      Good God, now I'm rambling on huh. Ok, I'll better stop.

      Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!! Hey, I can produce many crappy photo - many - especially holding the shutter until it buffers...... but I dont show those. 🤣 I really love the lightweight EF 100-400 on the R7 more so than the slower and newer RF version. Another of my favorite setups..... perfect for dragonflies, is my EF 70-200 with a 1.4 tele. I get lots of light and it is not that much heavier than my old 100-400. It is funny, but I have not pulled out my R5 in a while except for stars and I think going out one or two times recently. This R7 is a lot of fun. I LOVE the Ef 500 F4 but the weight these days does get to me. And..... when I pulled out my old Nikon D800, I forgot how much in some ways I prefer the optical view finder, and thinking about every single shot. That was fun. I go out, I have fun and I cant ask for anything more than that. Thank you, thank you for letting me share!!!! 🙏💖🤗

  • @harrison00xXx
    @harrison00xXx ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hard to choose for me, i often prefer the Canon EF 100-400 II since it does pretty much everything good/superior (except reach...), its "light" and feels good in the hands, also usable and good feeling focus ring, good to follow with focus manually.
    But the Sigma 150-600C is also a beast of a lens, on R7 240-960mm is AWESOME. Just a bit heavy and all the 3rd party lens problems with AF, stabilizer etc. Also its focus ring is just MUCH TOO SENSITIVE, hard to work with it! But whats cool.... its also without much force usable as push/pull zoom (hella awesome for airshows!), unlike the 100-400 II which is pretty stiff.
    And then there is one of the leftovers i probably sell, the RF 800 F11... pretty nice since its super light and performs well on full frame, but since i have the R7 i dont use my full frame camera anymore or not really much. Also.... F11 was "ok"ish for the beginning of my wildlife journey and i really enjoy how light, cheap and easy to use you can get hands on 800mm, but its MFD gets more and more a problem for me, also the bokeh at F11 is in many situations just "garbage" where even the Sigma 150-600 produce A LOT BETTER images, even if they are slightly less sharp in the details at F6.3, easily recovered in post!

    • @harrison00xXx
      @harrison00xXx ปีที่แล้ว

      Why i still refust to sell the RF 800... when i take it nowadays with me, i just ENJOY IT, even if its pretty sure it performs not as good or is very limited, probably dont even come home with a usable shot... who cares i didnt even feel the lens in my hand, except for the space just "like air" in the backpack, after walking around in the woods for hours.
      The 100-400 isnt much heavier, but definately "more". Where the problems begin... Sigma 150-600... the few noticable flaws AND its weight, its great for photos mainly as very universal wildlife lens with reach, but thats it. 2kg(+0,8kg body) is JUST TOO MUCH (as "everyday" wildlife lens when you want to be mobile/light packed as well)

    • @JonnyPink65
      @JonnyPink65  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you, thank you. Each lens has advantages and disadvantages. I have not used the RF 800 - because I am scared of the F11..... I would opt more for the 100-400 or Sigma. For some reason, and I seem to be the only one that thinks so, but F6.1 on one lens is not like that on other lenses on the R7. For that reason, I prefer the EF 100-400 over the RF version. Another combo I love but with less reach is my EF 70-200 with a 1.4 tele. Not light and not as much reach, but it is super sharp and I LOVE it. Bottom line is I go out to have fun...... and I am starting to like the lighter weight lenses more and more!!!!! I think that ANY lens can produce a great photo with practice. 🙏💖🤗
