Sandy reflects on her iconic Letterman appearances, her friendship with Madonna, playing Nancy on Roseanne and crafting her one-woman shows. Sandra also shares about her relationship with her girlfriend Sara of 20 years, including how they met and Sara’s impact on their daughter. Finally, we chat about how she infuses her life with Jewish spirituality and astrology.
Sandra Bernhard is a National treasure. Her Letterman appearances made her the best guest ever on that show. I’ve watched every one. A true original, one of a kind force of nature.

Absolutely LOVE Sandra. I met her when I worked at the Ali Forney Center with homeless LGBTQIA youth. She performed at a fund raiser and she was incredibly kind and sweet to all of the staff.
She's unabashedly sweet and kind. She'll say something outrageous and then say " but the kids expect it"
I remember watching "Without You, I Am Nothing" at the Tivoli theatre in Kansas City. Had a huuuge crush on her, her vibe is just so in your face and unapologetic.

Excellent interview Jess! Wow! I love your provocative questions that are delivered so eloquently. I met Sandra in Toronto after her "Without You I'm Nothing" performance. I was in my 20s and so intimidated by her powerful personality at the time but she was so sweet and down to earth when I met her as she signed my tour poster for me as we chatted. Keep up the awesome work! Your Melissa Etheridge interview was amazing too and I did comment on it as well!!

I met Sandra 2x in NYC. Once in the 90s on the street and then again at a fundraising event for the Ali Fornay Center when I worked there in the late 2000s. She is a LEGEND and all of us who lived in NYC in the late 80s early 90s, remember how iconic and trailblazing she really was for the LGBTQIA community. Absolutely love Sandra!! ❤️ ICON. I had a friend that looked and sounded like Sandra. She passed away two years ago. So seeing Sandra now makes me miss her.
What a great interview! I loved it. I had the pleasure of meeting Sandra when I coordinated a shoot for the "Hudson Hawk" DVD bonus features and she was a delight. Warm, gracious, and elegant. I was very impressed.

Always interesting to hear Sandra speak about pretty much anything. As a fashion student in early 90s, discovering her unique brand of stylish sophisticated humor was really exciting.
Also a life long Madonna fan, so their friendship was always fascinating to watch. I would like to point out that Madonna does have decades long friendships with Debi Mazar and Rosie O'Donnell and probably others we don't even know about, so kinda unfair of SB to imply that Madonna can't keep a friend. But she's been saying it for years and I can certainly respect that as her personal experience.

If it hadn't been for Madonna, the mainstream femme fatale that's ever so present now in pop culture, would never have existed. Madonna trail blazed the masses of the 80s into wakefulness, something of which was never before experienced. Without her, men would have continued to control the narrative in this "material world", a time Madonna gladly made inept for a new millennia. To quote her hit song Express Yourself from the late 80s, "don't go for second best..", women, girls and even men (those with balls large enough to hang in her realm) continue to listen to her call to "put your love to the test."

Theres also a bunch of those who thought they could live like madonna, do things for attention, focus only on sexual and superficial and then ended up miserable cause it was not fullfilling. And now looking at Madonna what she turned into in past years many must be like - what was i thinking?!

Most of the world was introduced to Sandra through Madonna. Jesse didn’t dwell on Madonna, she could have asked way more questions. She showed restraint.

Back in the 90''s, my friends and I went to see Sandra in a show she was doing at Stubb's Bar-b-Q. When we passed by the outdoor performance area, we saw basically saw nobody waiting for the show to start. It was strange--I mean NOBODY was there. I thought maybe I'd gotten the date wrong. We went up to the doorman and he said that they literally sold only four tickets and three were to us!! The show got cancelled!

Madonna is always changing her style, her music. She could have simply just grew out of her friendship with SB. Madonna evolves constantly, and she has the same friends for decades too..from what I read.
Seems like Sandra will always be a little resentful . It's not gonna change. Madonna still has friends before her fame, that achieved entertainment success as well. Some people are only ment to be in our lives for awhile / not forever. Sandra cant except that. But that's ok she'll probably move on one day.

I remember seeing her at The World nightclub in NYC: one night they were totally harassing Joan Rivers, chasing her up and down the stairs.
The few times I met her she was nasty as all get out!! I just thought it was because I was really androgynous so she didn’t know what to make of me-Instead she was just nasty and very Anti-Mexican, stating many anti-Latino slurs. I was mortified bc all I did was tell her in SF after the film premiere of “Without You I’m Nothing”was how much I adored her and she just looked down on me and started making Anti-Mexican slurs. She was nasty as ALL get out!!
