There’s a specific law against interfering with sportsmen that are legally enjoying their sport as I assume you were. Whether he agrees with fishing for spawning bass or not is irrelevant. You're certainly within your rights as a body of water is a public property. That said, I personally can't really blame a guy for taking offense when you're so close to his property (boat lift and dock) you're bumping into them. "Rights" aside there is also "etiquette". Keeping your boat a reasonable distance from someones property (dock, boat, lifts), dropping the pin or anchor so you're not drifting into someone's property while you're reeling one in, and refraining from casting within a reasonable distance to someone's canvas cover on their boat are all examples of etiquette. Consider the other perspective for just a brief moment. A lake front owner has had to pay out of pocket for torn boat lift covers, boat scratches, etc from sloppy anglers who cause damage and then duck and run. You may personally be the type of guy who steps up and pays for damage if you make it, but you'd be shocked to learn you're in the vast minority these days. But what do i know? I'm just one of those cranky lake front owners who have had to pay out of pocket for other people's mistakes. I am not saying this lake front owner's behavior is justified. I am saying you might do more fishing with less drama if you try some of the suggestions above.

I didn’t catch what state you’re fishing in, but in WI that dude can be fined for harassing you the way he did. There’s a specific law against interfering with sportsmen that are legally enjoying their sport as I assume you were. Whether he agrees with fishing for spawning bass or not is irrelevant. Catch and release with an artificial lure is not hurting anything.

Press it. People must respect your legal rights to fish. And they must be charged when they break those laws that say you can legally fish or hunt. That's the only way they'll learn to leave you in peace.
In the outdoors and in a street fight, there are no rules. They were lucky this old man wasn't armed. You can't press charges or call the police if you're dead. Best to just leave peacefully and fish elsewhere, ain't worth the confrontation.

You're certainly within your rights as a body of water is a public property. That said, I personally can't really blame a guy for taking offense when you're so close to his property (boat lift and dock) you're bumping into them. "Rights" aside there is also "etiquette". Keeping your boat a reasonable distance from someones property (dock, boat, lifts), dropping the pin or anchor so you're not drifting into someone's property while you're reeling one in, and refraining from casting within a reasonable distance to someone's canvas cover on their boat are all examples of etiquette. Consider the other perspective for just a brief moment. A lake front owner has had to pay out of pocket for torn boat lift covers, boat scratches, etc from sloppy anglers who cause damage and then duck and run. You may personally be the type of guy who steps up and pays for damage if you make it, but you'd be shocked to learn you're in the vast minority these days. But what do i know? I'm just one of those cranky lake front owners who have had to pay out of pocket for other people's mistakes. I am not saying this lake front owner's behavior is justified. I am saying you might do more fishing with less drama if you try some of the suggestions above.
