I once set up a nice 5 gallon fish tank for a betta fish, and when I finally went to the pet store to buy one I was told it’s okay to put 2 female bettas in a 5 gallon tank, so I bought two bettas and put them in my tank. A week later they would constantly not stop fighting and it was a nightmare! I had to buy and culture a second tank to separate them. The good news is that I really like having two 5 gallon betta tanks now, but from my experience never put multiple bettas in a small tank!

I've had a sorority going in a 100 gallon for about eight months now. I've had to deal with several issues with it along the line, but thanks to Lisa's and others videos on the subject I've been prepared to handle most of them. Having a sorority is awesome, but it's not a question of if there will be problems, but when. If you need to ask of your tank is good enough for a sorority, then you haven't done enough research. If it's your only tank, then absolutely do not start a sorority.

@@Sebastian_fleming well you can't argue with veteran fish hobbyists 😂 specially elder men and women in the east and the asian and southeastern asian parts. They're gonna bonk you in the head if they hear you say something incredulous, and you'll be sittin' with them on their shops for hours if you're ever gonna debate with them and their ways 😂🤣
Because of this the general rule i follow is
      1. If the owner of the shop is elderly and seems to know their stuff around the hobby, check the fishes first. Look around, check the tanks, look for anything that's like a "habit" for em (patterns you can make visible from a person based on what you see in their hobby).
      2. If they specialize on a specific fish, like bettas, then ask the general care for them. Work around them.
      3. If you know the owner long enough, he'll let you in on his secrets to how he managed to make ALL his fishes thrive, vibrant and such.
      4. If he says he did something that made you a bit skeptic, don't just cross him out in your head, let him explain more, as unreasonable as it sounds.
      5. Be careful asking about this cause they'll be easily offended. Instead, again work your way around without asking the same things that'll make them annoyed.

We have a sorority of 5 in a 60 gallon planted thank. That same tank also has 12 ghost shrimp, 11 neon tetras, two Corey catfish, and several snails. We just recently introduced those female bettas about a month ago and so far things have been pretty smooth, they all look healthy and they don't seem to really bother with each other most times. However they do have their own little territories in that tank. Each allows all other fish and shrimp into their little spots but not the bettas, lol. They'll chase each other out, but then there's days where they're all together happily getting along. I feel that if your going to have succes with this you'll require the following. A tank that's a leas 60 gallons, so 10 gallons per betta. Make sure it's a heavily planted tank, so co2. And last community fish that school and some peaceful ghosts shrimp, They'll serve as distractions from eachother. The plants will also allow the bettas to not see each other as frequently if they do run into anothers territory when they are being semi-aggresive to each other. Like I said it's only been a month and my wife and I run our business from home so we do watch our fish alot, heck we have a lounge chair right next to it lol. However so far for us it's been a wonderful experience, but what works for me might not work for you.

It all depends on the betta. I have two females and a male in a 40 gallon tank, and they all interact and swim together. They hang out together all day. If one of them is by themself, the others come over and hang out. It’s quite adorable. I also have to say that I did not put them all at the same time. I first got the male, then added one female later, and another female recently. You would think they were all raised together. Also, my female and male betta killed two otocinclus, so this shows that bettas are unpredictable and it comes down to the genes and how they were bred. I have one koi betta that will be flying solo forever. He’s too aggressive and feisty but the funny thing is, he likes to be pet like a dog. Every betta fish has their own personality and you won’t know if they can cohabitate with another until you try and monitor. You’ll see right away if you can or can’t have multiple bettas together

Please don't consider a betta sorority of you only have a 10 gallon tank. I'd go as far to say don't consider a sorority unless you are an experienced enthusiast with the equipment to deal with problems that may arise.

Thank youuuu 🙌🙌🙌 I wouldn't recommend it with anything less than a 6ft tank. People have had a sorority going for a year or two and still come home to everyone dead because they randomly decided they hated each other

you c a n also have two males, depending on the tank size, setup, and attitude of the two males. also addition of females help too. i have two males and 6 females in my large community tank with some rasboras, danios, cory cats, cherry barbs, and some other kooky fish here and there such as a kuhli loach and some bumble bee cats, etc. anyways it’s a large tank, lots of coverage and live plants. all the fish were added at once (i know how to handle that situation) and they all live happily! no flaring, just exploring, eating, and thriving. however, what i can say is that you need to get lucky for this to happen. some bettas won’t be the same! the things i did just will increase your chances of it going smoothly

Not necessarily sorority related but I’m looking at buying a 5 gallon tank and getting a beta for it (not sure make or female yet), and I don’t think is it big enough for any other fish? I’m thinking I should stick to snails but if possible I’d love to add some smaller fish (like some tetras) but obviously I wouldn’t want to crowd the tank. Any help would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks!!

I've only had 2 females hundreds of males ..my first female was mostly a darling..she just hated the skirted tetras...and she would hunt down fry...but she lived happy in a 65g community tank for years...she was grown when we got her..so in the end I placed her in smaller tanks she found it hard to get to the top of the tank..my other female was small and wild she hated everyone..it took me ages to get her into a female guppy tank and to live happy...even if 2 males got put in a big tank by mistake..never let your mum care for a tank..🤣🤣🤣🤣..I had no problems...but that was a big tank..I nolonger keep them..it's very hard to lose a fish like that...they never become just another fish...my angel Victor is the same..he is a family member..I just can't think about not having him around..

This reminds me of the class I took before I was allowed to adopt my rabbit. I worried for 2 years after if I did a single thing wrong he'd die. lol. They put the fear of all the gods in me. 6 years later he's still fine, but I know a lot about bunnies. And I caution people just the same way. I can't wait to learn more about betta sororities.

I got into the hobby with male bettas.
After buying two females to see if I could breed one with my male; I absolutely fell in love with the females.
I currently have a 40 gallon with 6 females, they get along and often rest on the same leaves as one another. I’m hoping to add more in the future

Hi Lisa. I’ve been binging John and your videos. Great Job! I’ve got a 29 hex and want to do a betta sorority with it. Probably go with five fbettas and some dither fish. Do you think one male would get along with the girls? Guess that would make it a harem tank and not a sorority.

Actually I once had a tank where I had two females a bunch of male guppies and they all got along quite well and a 5 gallon tank
They all had plenty of room to swim and because it was a little bit crowded they were less likely to have problems.
That was a beautiful tank I had that tank for 2 years. And my betas were happy they weren't stressed they swam happily it well.
So when they went to fish heaven I got a beautiful male betta he's a double tail crown tail and he's living with four guppies and a 5 gallon tank and they're all doing well he has plenty of places to hide and the guppies pick for food things like that.
Have another mail beta he likes a smaller tank I tried putting him in a 5 gallon and he hated it and I put two guppies in there with him and he's quite fine.
I have a female betta she's in a smaller tank and she likes to live alone.
I also have a red veil tail and he's in a 5 gallon and he likes living alone too just depends on your beta.
Some are really docile and some they don't want to be bothered.
