I believe the explanation for Star Wars is something about there being "mass shadows" in hyperspace. Basically, significant enough gravitational force exists in both reality and hyperspace, so hyperspace jumping directly at a planet is still inadvisable, which is why there are maps of safe jumps to make because otherwise you're moving too fast to be able to react to any of these gravity obstacles. However this comes from the old Extended Universe which was retconned when Disney bought the series, which is why you can have stuff like hyperspace jumping at another ship to destroy each other. 'Cause with this explanation, only the jumping ship would sustain any damage if at all, because the jumping ship would have no presence in regular reality with which to destroy the other ship, but assuming you had something large enough (like a Death Star), IT would have presence in both reality and hyperspace. EDIT: I've only got a passing knowledge of this shit, so just look up "Mass Shadows" on the Star Wars wiki.
I don't think Spike knew what was in the capsule at the time, but he saw that SHE was reacting to it when he was trying to get it loose, acting nervous like it was dangerous, so he planted it on her rather than have it on the ship. That's how I feel anyway (did a rewatch recently, still love that episode). I don't care about how long these guys take with any series tbh coz their characteristics and personalities are so fun to watch so I enjoy the long ride with them
